What are the odds of a pair of shoes shipped from the US via Priority Mail to be detained by the local customs?

I had 2 pairs of boots shipped from Australia. The first pair went missing before ending up at my door 2 months later. The second pair took only 10 days.
I don't know if the delay was due to the couriers or the customs.

Are shoes taxable? Anyway if it does, you will get a mail and you have to "settle" at about 30% of the actual tax value...

ofcourse being labelled "gift" you might talk your way out of it...

Seller refused to mark the item as gift. Now should I proceed?

Mark it as 'used' and/or markdown the price.
If the value is set at over RM500 you are most likely going to be taxed.

From what I understand, shoes have an import tax of 15% and sales tax of 10%. Shoes made out of leather is supposedly tax free.
I know biking boots (even made from full grain leather) are taxed as they tag it as motorcyling paraphernalia.

So, in the worst case scenario you are looking at 25% tax on top of your CIF value. But you can settle for about 30% of that, receipt free...

These just came in from Herring Shoes. Both made by Cheaney...

Funnily enough the Dark Leaf Captoe Oxford which is a slightly elongated Last was more generous on my feet that uses an off-the-counter orthothic (thanks to my wide and flat feet) vmad.gif vs the Chestnut Calf/ tan Canvass Spectators.

Sadly Herring Shoes as discontnued the free Cedar Shoe Trees deal for every purchase over 100GBP (if you enter in the code denoting you're from the Ask Andy Forums) cry.gif Still the non-cedar expandable wood shoe tree at 16GBP (ex-VAT) still seems pretty fair....

Overall I think they're a pretty good source for shoes as their in-house branded stuff from Loake, barker and Cheaney seems to be a little more specced up than their namesake branded equivalents. I love the antiquing polish on the Herring Captoe (Churchill) (except silly me used neutral shoe cream on it to nourish the leather up... but ended up stripping some of the antiquing off.... cry.gif )
