I'm in the process of negotiating to buy this pair of Church's. About RM700 for this moderately used pair.

What do you people think?

have your tried to look around for a new pair? honestly, i am quite hesitating to fork out RM700 for a used one, but this pair is at least 8.5/10 condition.

comes with the shoe trees?

gentlemen, i have a case study up for opinion:

1. purpose: wardrobe expansion
2. core focus: shoes for daily office wear
3. quantity required: 3 pairs - 2 in black and 1 in brown/tan
4. shortlist: Loake, Alfred Sargent, Johnston & Murphy and Cheaney
5. current scenario: 5 pairs - 3 wingtips (in black, brown and suede), 2 cap toes (in brown and oxblood)

questions: which brand and what style should i go for? is J&M any good?

Wouldn't it depend more on your budget? I don't know about AS, J&M or Cheaney but so far I'm happy with my 2 pairs of Loakes. Maybe 1 black brogue, 1 black captoe and 1 chocolate brown brogue?

BTW, does this look like a phallic symbol!??
thanks for your suggestion, sir and no, it doesn't look like one. thus, you can rest assured that no one will be offended whilst you're wearing these beauties.

I cannot comment about Johnston & Murphy but can certainly do so for the rest of them. Loake would be the cheapest among the brands that you listed other than Johnston & Murphy that I am unaware of. Quality-wise, it does not measure up to AF and Cheaney. Their lower end lines (L1 and Loake England) are all constructed using corrected grain leathers which is rather stiff and little too shiny initially. Even then, they are perfectly wearable as everyday shoes. I personally own a pair each from those lines that I mentioned and they serve the purpose as my school/ going out/ interview shoes. Loake do have a line of calf skin shoes as well. They are not as supple as higher end (C&J, Church's) calf skins but at they are priced very reasonably in my opinion. I prefer Cheaney to Alfred Sargent although my preferences are probably skewed by the fact that I see more Cheaneys than Alfred Sargents. If the rumours are true, Cheaney shoes are made out of leathers that fail to pass Church's quality controls. This means that they are actually really good leathers other than perhaps very minor flaws that a plabian like me cannot tell. But I shall refrain from comparing Cheaney to Church's as it's like comparing a 3 series to a 6 series BMW. So, my conclusion is that, if budget is a huge consideration, go for Loake. Otherwise, Cheaney is what I recommend.

Get a pair of tan semi-brogue Oxfords, a pair of black derby and a pair of black single-monkstrap!
thank you so much for the details, sir. it is very much appreciated.

i have read somewhere that Cheaney is owned by Church's. therefore i trust that you are right on the quality of the dead bovine. however, knowing that i will be semi-thrashing my shoes, i shall prohibit myself from acquiring something from the higher end ie Church's or CJ, and Cheaney seems to be the best bet amongst. i did a brief check at pediwear and much to my dismay, the options were scarce. p.lal store seems to be the only source for it locally. any other online store that you have in mind?

throughout my entire life, i have never owned a pair of non lace-up shoes and i can't really imagine myself in a pair of monk strap; i really don't wish to give a bad name to these beauties. i came across a pair at Salvatore Ferragamo and the workmanship is superb IMHO.

Johnston & Murphy, saw them in outlet shoes starting prices at ~US$49. alot of them are made in China/India.
kinda like Cole Hann.
not tried them, can't comment.

thanks for the information. it is very much appreciated.

i saw a few J&M at the local store, selling well below rm600 per pair and i thought it was a good deal. i didn't check where were they made of. however, after given a deep thought, i went for something from uk, something i am familiar with, something not SF approved.

last check at the garden, a pair of a.testoni is selling at rm1500 and above. way too expensive.

btw, those are paul smith - from uk, made in italy and not sf approved.

whats SF approve?
J&M here is sure expensive, US is like everyday brand
*
you can say that again. j&m is very much overpriced and the only way to purchase it here is during sales.

sf=style forum. as the name suggests, it is a forum for the discussion of men's style. it is akin to the 'holy bible' to becoming a sartorialist. based on my limited involvement there, those sf approved shoes include berluti, john lobb, c&j, cheaney etc. luxury brands 'hardly' survive the discussion there and will be pawned at no time.

Looks good, Bordeaux is a unique colour. Did you get a Bordeaux wax/cream with it?
*
not yet but planning to get a couple of Saphirs this weekend from the cobbler in Ikano. currently i am only applying beeswax conditioner.

what shoe care are you applying for your Cheaney/Loake in suede?

oh, for those uninformed, the cobbler also furnish refurbishing and repairing services for luxury goods. i know a couple of luxury brands are using the said services.

I don't think they have Bordeaux. Just clear, tan, mid brown, brown and black.

Suede I hardly care for. Sometimes vacuum, sometimes brush with the crepe brush. I have a impregnator for it that I applied once when new.
*
that was my fear but i think i shall settle with clear/neutral wax. thanks for sharing.

The workmanship is not in contention, it's having to deal with the bespectacle dragon at the counter.

Saphirs are great. They really bring life to the shoes.
I would use the Renovateur to soften & protect the leather, cream in the correct color & finish off the shine with Saphir's Pate de Luxe to give it that extra shine.

Might be cheaper if you order them on line .

There's a shop in Sri Hartamas that specializes in leather restoration. I'm having an old pair of shoes restored there.

Feel free to pm me if you are interested in the source for both
*
thanks for your offering. you have got pm smile.gif

*
