Any idea the subwoofer are passive or active? Sorry speaker is really not my forte.

Added on November 1, 2012, 12:12 pmGot myself the AVR 473 package with the Yamaha 210 speakers, and add in the 315 sub.

Earlier try online firmware update, failed with error, luck managed to use usb update and now running on 1.08

I’m planning to pair Bose speakers with RX-V473 anyone have tried before , what does the sound look like . I’m going for Bose because the size of the speakers is small .

Dont think bose is popular among the members in here. If you like small speakers, the KEF eggs can be consider as well

You can adjust the impedence of the Yamaha AVR to the impedence of your Pioneer front speakers. You do it when you calibrate the speakers using Yamaha's YPAO. Every manufacturer would not recommend mixing their equipment with others due to marketing/financial reasons but logic says you can (ie you take care of the impedence setting). What if the speaker manufacturer does not manufacture AVR and vice versa? When you buy the AVR and speakers of the same brand,  you probably get "better" sound (very subjective if not insignificant in reality) 'cos they were probably tested together during the development. I think all you need to get is an active subwoofer instead of the whole 5.1 speaker set.

Hi Guys, I need your advice here. i am planning to buy the Yamaha RXV673. This AVR will connect to the 4ohms surround speakers. I am wondering if i can do so or the amp itself has setting to lower the impedance requirement like Onkyo or other brands.

You can check the price with CT Seong who is from A&L Bangsar Village. Very nice guy while talking on the phone. Just tell him that you are kaki of Lowyat forum.

You can change impedence using Advances Setup, pls refer to manual, i think its holding Straight button, then, hold Info button, then, press Power; try and see.

Be careful with 4 ohm speakers. Don't play too loud.

Thanks for the advice. The 4ohm speakers are temporary set only. Probably we wait for budget early of next year to buy new set of 8ohm speaker for matching the power requirement of this AVR.

I can confirm that this worked as I just purchased an RXV-473 for RM1900. Updated the firmware to 1.64. Hooked it with Mordaunt Short LR and C speakers with Kenwood Active Sub + old Onkyo surround speakers. YPAO callibration was very well down. But I custom fine tuned it a little. Few comments and help needed on this unit as this was my first Yamaha. I have 2 Denons, 1 sold and one taken away by my brother.

1. The on screen display's graphics are really ugly. Anyone agrees with me?
2. Maybe I haven't get used to Yamaha, but it seems not to automatically detect 2.1 or 5.1 from the source. previously from my Denon, when it received 5.1 channel (AC3/DTS/TrueHD/MasterAudio) it will automatically switch. But for this RXV673, it kept the previously used setting, eg when I was playing stereo, once I changed to another source (on and off the unit), it will retain whatever scene I was using for all stereo playbacks. Similar goes to 5.1 channels. I have it on Standard Movie, but when I playback (also, turned on and off the AV, coz play it next day), it will retain the previous scene, in which this time, I played a 2.1 only movie, but it went to surrond decode. Anyone knows a way for it not to remember previous scene but to just automatically use the source signals?
3. The most annoying would be this. My unit is connected with Bluray/PS3 and a Media Player. When I was listening to music, be it via the Media Player or USB (front), it worked perfectly while the TV is turned on. To conserve energy, I turned off the tv and viola, the player stopped to output any music. The red HDMI out will be blinking. Only after I turn the TV back on, it resumes. Tried HDMI control/HDMI passthru, nothing. Any advice?

In overall, i would say that this unit performed fine. Love the Dialog volume and lift increase. DRC works well too to keep the sound in an acceptable level, but I turned it off biggrin.gif The LCD font is kinda large and ugly though doh.gif

Thanks in advance for any help.

1. yes, yamaha OSD ugly
2. instead of changing input source alone, yamaha promote changing SCENE 1,2,3,4 which combine input source and sound programme.

i notice that when u are playing stereo using MOVIE or any other mode (Cinema DSP light up), it is actually running STRAIGHT mode without showing up. only front speaker & subwoofer got sound.
its fine for me, unless u like to have surround speakers all play together in 5CH STEREO /5CH ENHANCER mode.

SURROUND DECODE use dolby prologic to emulate surround from stereo source. can choose music/movie/game mode to make all surround speakers give sound.
it also detects 5.1 movie and apply AC3/DTS effects without yamaha own Cinema DSP.

3. i get the same issue with my home unit RX-V463 (old model.. HDMI passthru is not supported yet)
well, receiver LCD looks ok to me. orange text version

Duh...looks like I'm stuck with the constant need to turn on my TV, even when I'm listening to the radio. The only way would be to go into pure direct. but that bypasses the subwoofer. Bookshelf's bass can't compare to a sub. What a waste of energy....haiii

I am using 473,

Testing with dune player on both scenario while dune is playing the media

01) Switch Yamaha AVR stanby. TV will have short period of black screen, and after TV will be normal with audio and visio

02) Switch off TV, my AVR still playing the audio.

Maybe you read up the manual. Page 67 "RX-V573_V473_Manual_English.pdf"

Hi Alucard

Try disabling your HDMI_CEC from your TV. This will allow you to control the receiver insependently from the TV.

Regards
