We hv moved to South America?

Probably into his compulsory service years.

We are actually in need of more doctors as the situation on the ground is so different. Perhaps, not many are competent.

Crimea is the ukrainian uni that was derecognised in 2006.....but he will still be registered as it's a prospective de-recognition, ie only for those entering from 2006 onwards...

he has not got his full registration after provisional registration in 2008, which is unusual.....unless he is indeed still under housemanship, having been retained due to failure to show adequate competency...

'overwork' is a relative word.....what is normal relax work is overworking for some others....

and how does the police come to the conclusion that he injected himself with something to 'fight off fatigue'....?....i don't even know of the existence of such a drug.....

A very sad case, no matter the circumstances that led to this.

Re drugs, would he have access to drugs like ritalin?

By M. KUMAR
kumar@thestar.com.my

KUALA LUMPUR: A trainee doctor was found dead in a restroom at Kajang Hospital.

Police believe he had overdosed on an unidentified drug.

Lee Chang Tat, 29, was found dead in the men's room of the paediatric ward at 7am yesterday by hospital staff who went looking for him after they noticed that he was missing.

How did 'Uruguay' came to be mentioned instead of Ukraine??... (differential diagnoses in progress... ... ...)

Methylphenidate is more difficult to get than some other certain drugs-of-high-potential-of-abuse (particularly those lying around in E.R or in OT)~ brows.gif

... but then again, from the news, he was found in the pediatric ward's toilet - methylphenidate can be found there~ (ADHD pediatric patients)

he was probably abusing some other drugs instead of a stimulant... morphine/propofol/fentanyl vials lying around perhaps...

...???

This one stated possibility of suicide: http://www.mmail.com.my/story/doctor-found...d-hospital-ward

suicide and substance abuse are very real problems amongst doctors.....in fact, doctors are near the top in terms of professionals committing suicide....depression is common, in this high stress job....

doctors with substance abuse is also a problem, partly because of their ability to access such substances....

interestingly, these topics are one of the first to be covered in the utas med school.....

in a recent article in a publication of the medical protection society uk, the ethics of colleagues with mental disorder and/or substance abuse was highlighted....should doctors tell on their friends/colleagues?.....

I believe so. we had a discussion on that in year 2, and I think it's really for the best of the patients and the affected doctor. having said that, it'll be complicated as he/she might be your best friend or boss. and emotions might hinder rationality.

It's really sad sad.gif If not mistaken, doctors are #2 on the suicide list, and dentists being #1. On call = 36 hours consecutively?

Heheh. Damn. I thought i was reading the latest page. I was replying to someone asking 'Who's in Kajang now?' My bad.

We started HO together in 2008. First year went smoothly for him. Then he took an unpaid leave for a year, leaving for Cambodia, but eventually came back to KKM. Restarted HO from scratch. That's why he's still doing his housemanship. All in all, he was a very pleasant guy. I have heard insider stories (rumours maybe, no concrete evidence whatsoever) when they first found him in the SCN toilet. Along a substance we use in ED everyday. But maybe i'll just stop at that. May God rest his soul.

in the past, incidences of fresh doctors not doing, or quitting housemanship is almost unheard of...

lately, it seems to be occurring with increasing regularity...

it reflects problems in the selection of medical students in the first place...

it is very expensive to train doctors in most countries, and the system tries to minimise drop out rates....

there is no such system in msia's free for all, unregulated, medical education......

Ms Lee said her brother, who graduated from Crimea State University in Russia, had stopped working at the hospital a year after he began his housemanship in 2008.

I guess we have to live with it and such incidents or related ones will occur with increasing regularity until such time parents realize that getting top marks in exams does not mean a "must" career in med. Surely, the assumption that doctors make the most monies in current times are no longer true n many more professions provide better rewards to deserving graduates. I think I can safely say that more than 70% of top performers will opt for med if you would allow them automatic entry into ipta. The other sad thing is that those who can hardly make it into a basic science course will also want to be one including those doing arts. The Ukraine fiasco is sad reminder but we are re-running the same script again, though under a different packaging. We just do not know when we will wake up from the hard truth. We can only hope at best.

that is what kinoa said....stopped, and then restarted (there is NO 'credit transfer' for housemanship.....)

that fact clearly suggests there was already some problems 3 years ago.....

that aspect of the problem, while may make unhappy students and doctors, is not the major problem....

the other aspect....where getting low marks also entitles one to study medicine, is the one that is going to produce the most issues in future....
