ignorance is bliss.....

but 5 years is a long time away, and it is possible political efforts by medical students unions, ama, and other vested bodies may prompt the fed and state governments to increase housemanship places.....there were some regional newspapers articles addressing this issue, and saying other countries, notably singapore and nz are stealing aussie trained doctors, and oz needs to do something about this.....

the special category of monash msia graduates needs to be re-evaluated, as per some commentaries.....the current practice is group them together with other international students who studied on shore.....

there were arguments to put onshore students ahead of monash msia graduates, which some consider same as img.......

time will tell.....
*
I'd say accommodating the 350 onshore international students is probably tough enough already, adding in the 100 or so Monash Sunway grads would most likely deteriorate the training quality that interns receive (not to mention that the Commonwealth government would have to fork out an additional 6 million dollars to employ these graduates).

Interestingly though, I've heard from a friend at Sunway that apparently if one is government-sponsored, he or she is not allowed to do the final year placement (not the compulsory 3 month rotation in Melbourne) in an overseas hospital (possibly to retain them in Malaysia)

Just a little off topic. Sometimes too much negative comments create a bad perception. Looking at the recent Mahsa advert on their nursing grads gives the impression that the quality is commendable given that many of them are employed overseas including sg n mid east. This is in contrast to those highlighted that many are unemployed. Maybe quality makes the difference. I am not saying Mahsa is good, just that the advert has proven a pt or two.

Some optimism for UK grads here:

http://www.hospitaldr.co.uk/blogs/tag/foundation-years

At least they are seen to be pushing for preference for UK grads, ahead of IMGs, via the application process.

There's about 10 Malaysians among the international MBBS freshies in Clayton, including the top student from Sunway Taylor's SAM program. There's also one JPA scholar, 5 MUFY (onshore) students, one VCE Yr 12. Students from Singapore make up nearly 30 apparently. O week sounds like a carnival!

Thanks for the info.

Hope that priority still be given to UK grads. The diff is still not that great between supply and demand and we never know 5 years down the road. But I read somewhere that incoming or existing med students will STILL be given places.

Maybe later on when the supply exceeds demand and cant be cope, they would give notice, one year in advance to intending students. Just like Aberdeen gave one year notice on the increase in fees for the pre-clinical.

Can you point me to that article please? Supply has already exceeded demand, but the supply at the moment comprise of ALL uk and non uk grads, as the FP is a prerequisite for GMC registration. Note that the FP is independent of universities offering medicine. And if Australia is any measure at all, the offer letter actually tells you that internships are not guaranteed. Is FP mentioned at all, in your relative's offer letter? Thanks!

Still pending one more decision from a university and thereafter UCAS only can process. The Glasgow secured offer will come after payment of 1,000 pounds which would be soon.

Do you mean the offer is actually in UCAS track, and no physical documents sighted at this stage?

There is a conditional offer in writing sent by courier earlier and the A levels results given to them. Upon confirmation with UCAS and the payment, the unconditional offer will come.

I am not surprised at the drop considering that Newcastle is now in full swing (not to mention the rest of the new med courses). Who knows, Nottingham and Southampton might also jump on the bandwagon in the near future (smaller slice of the cake for everyone)

What are the odds of these foreign universities bailing out of Malaysia in the event of an economic crisis like the one in Greece i.e. no more funds from PTPTN, MARA and JPA

Monash is owned by the same taukei as Sunway Uni so I think they'll just ride the storm and give out scholarships.

Cant say the same for other schools though. Remember UNSW's fate in SG a couple of years back?

Why should they bail out? In the event of economic crisis i believe THEIR students will flock to Malaysia to study instead (professional courses aside) since it is so much more cheaper here.

Btw for those who think that there's no difference between MBBS (Monash) Sunway and Australia, in MMC record the qualification is registered as

"MONASH UNIVERSITY, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA"

or

"MONASH UNIVERSITY SUNWAY CAMPUS, TAN SRI JEFFREY CHEAH SCHOOL OF MEDICINE"

who says no difference? wink.gif

Sign of the times or wat? With so many med colleges offering foundation programmes, a bit surprised to be a drop in the students intake with increasing number of students signing up for pre-u courses each year.

Share with your coursemates! It's probably the better mbbs program in the country anyway, I think.
