In backwards order, Nokia has finally launched the N900 after we've already seen a review and countless leaks. Nevertheless, it's good to have the new Maemo 5 Internet Tablet out in the open and official-like. The specs include a 3.5-inch 800x480 pixel (resistive) touchscreen, sliding QWERTY, 32GB of on-board storage expandable to 48GB via microSD, GPS/A-GPS, FM transmitter, TV-out, Bluetooth 2.1, WiFi, 1320mAh battery, and 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and dual-LED flash. Better yet, this monster MID brings the power of the ARM Cortex-A8, up to 1GB of application memory, and OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics acceleration to make quick work of polygons and what Nokia promises will be a "PC-like experience on a handset-sized device." It also brings a Mozilla-based Maemo browser with Adobe Flash 9.4 support. As expected, it'll be on display at Nokia World next week before this quad-band GSM/EDGE, 900/1700/2100MHz UMTS/HSPA handset heads to select markets in October for €500 (pre tax and pre carrier subsidy). And by the looks of that 1700MHz band, this baby's heading to T-Mobile USA.

10 awesome feature of maemo 5 here

As u could see tis baby sporting maemo 5 (a linux variant) platform rather than symbian that quite associated with nokia nowadays..before this maemo was used in nokia's internet tablet (Nokia N800, N810)
Maemo itself is a very powerful linux platform, its is not linux based like Android OS or Palm webOS...IT IS LINUX laugh.gif
So what do u think on this phone...for me im drooling on this drool.gif

its true but seriously for me it is not a dealbreaker wink.gif
If there's a well designed alternative for multitouch then there's no prob
for instance in the browser although there's no pinching gesture like on the iphone...the double tap n circular motion to zoom is not so bad either...
n tbh i prefer the double tap to zoom more on my 5800 than the pinching like the iphone nod.gif
hence in easier word its nice to hve multitouch but it is not a must have for me icon_rolleyes.gif

Nokia optimize and improve resesitive touchscreen phone where people call it's an old technology. But it have several advantage then capacitive touchscreen. Try google some. I prefer both, but for now, I'm more into resestive then capacitive technology. Dunno why... but the feel of pressing really good. And who say resesitive were slow response? My N97 is very responsive anyway.

About zooming, you can tap the screen and swirl it for zoom in and out. it's easy.

omnia hd is out coz too overprice in malaysia market. Rm2800 for 8gb? Pls la... I could get better offer then this. Nowadays 8gb and 16gb isn't sufficient.

N900 can support many video codec plus no need to convert the video, max 48gb and etc. N900 is definitely worth to choose. rclxms.gif

If I want HD recording, better go for HD or Full HD Camcorder. Reason why, the vid HD recorder is actually poorer then those HD camcorder (well of course). So, I just want a regular or common piece of lense like Carl Zeiss 5MP which already suffice and no HD recording since phone won't keep up with HD camcorder afterall (maybe 7 years later will be) icon_rolleyes.gif

I've not played S60 5th device before, but from what I see on videos and screenshots, I don't like it. Looks like something half baked to me. Not to say the OS is bad, but doesn't give a good touch screen UI, trying to put a S60 3rd into touch screen mode.

N900 is definitely worth considering. Just wait for the reviews and decide.

An interesting video on N900 interaction documentary done by Nokia people:

This phone is going to be a HIT once it's out. Never been so interested in a Nokia phone since the 6230.

sorry2 notworthy.gif . im also still using s60v5. tongue.gif

the main selling point for n900, is it's OS itself. as for hardware, not much special coz other manufacturer also already using it. even certain featured phone also using higer clock cpu.

but nowadays, ppl intend to choose a good/practical/eye catchy UI. n i believe n900 might can satisfied this group of peoples. With a combination with good/better hardware (when compare to certain other high-end phone), this n900 can sell like a hot cake thumbup.gif (as long is the pricing is right). look fwd for this n900

no, the size a little smaller then n97 (check the previous post), the price will be around the same like samsung hd i8910 in malaysia market. Compare with samsung hd, i think samsung hd is overprice

as for n900, the gps is free! unlike iphone where u need connection to get to use the gps... and it's a multimedia hardcore

if i were u, i choose extra feature like gps cause its very important to me since im road blind. Regarding the interface, you'll get bored soon with iphone. So, depend on which is your top priority

to make it Maemo 5 platform a success platform, nokia need 3rd party developer to develop apps for maemo 5 so that it can compete with iphone & it's apps store.

Spec wise, N900 beat iPhone anytime. Only touchscreen experience (N900 use ultra-sensitive resensitive while iPhone use capacitive) iPhone win hands down.

I wouldn't say iphone win hands down...in term of sensitivity yes iphone capacitive screen win but in terms of accuracy N900 pawns Iphone any time....in short both hve their own speciality....capacitive screen tends to be more sensitive while resistive ones more accurate....n not to mention the sensitivity on resistive screen is catching up with capacitive screen so we will see more of that in the future icon_rolleyes.gif

It’s only supposed to be €599, approximately RM 2,522. But after tax and etc, RRP could be around RM2,700. But you could get cheaper from other retailer. rclxms.gif

Anyway, another N900 video

Since X series X6 Nokia using Capacitive touchscreen. Maybe I should wait another MAEMO Os from Nokia that use Capacitive or Optical touchscreen. ANYWAY, this phone makes Samsung and LG in pain! icon_rolleyes.gif

i wonder why nokia didnt implement their n95/n95 8gb formula to this n900 (boosting all their best hardware/software)?
last time during n95 era, its among the best in terms of hardware.

I think la, MAEMO isn't hardware eater. See the video from your post. The touchscreen response very very nice eventhough it's resitive. The OS is light-weight but powerful one. It's like comparing Ubuntu (MAEMO) with Vista (WinMo).

yeah. that maybe rite. but what i mean are, why not combining the tilt form factor from n97+camera from n86+capacitive from X6 (if its true)+compass from n97.
they can repeat the success of n95/95 8gb.

i understand marketing strategy to diverse their product line up, but if they produce all the best in one device, it still will sell like hot cakes

yeah. totally agree.
maybe winmo7 will be like Zune HD interface, it will be cool.

compare x2 with n900, x2 looks more sleeker, cooler & hv exclusive/executive looks. but the OS, Maemo5 pawn winmo6.5. smile.gif

1. Carl Zeiss developer

2. Intel

3. Linux MAEMO

4. Microsoft

5. Optical Touchscreen (dunno what developer)

6. 12Megapixel with big sensor.

That's all I know. Don't know it's true or not. But confirm 1,2,3,4,6 their working on it. laugh.gif

Currently considering e72 and Omnia Pro B7610 (Louvre) beside this phone.

- e72 : 2 big issues (lacks TV-out function) (lacks big screen)
- n900 : 2 questions (can edit MS docs?) (can synchronize with windows PC?)
- Omnia Pro : seems to have everything, plus AMOLED screen.

I'm not habouring my hopes over this device. Previously n97 was a big hype until it came out. The utterly doggy interface really is a nuisance. & Some really regretted resulting in short ownership.

Processing spec wise, it's the same as 3gs but spots on a pagefile feature, which is useful if you're running a high mem software. n97 was used to be called the flagship of nokia, but then again it phailed. Thus they're quick to bounce back with a device similar to HTC hero. No bad in imitating but at the end of the day, it's about overall usage. We have seen HTC hero's application wise is good. both on input and features. What lacks in is the processing power (yes multi tasking needs a hefty juice).

Personally I think nokia did study their mistake and launch the phone around nations with haxor. Yes, hoping those geeks can crack the code or develop even more softwares thus unleashing it's potential. Don't get me wrong, Nokia has been developing robust & bullet proof phones all theses years. They are much lacking in terms of OS designing.

We've seen alot of phone tagged with a Iphone killer potential. However at the end of the day, not 1 has successfully pull down iphone. Why apple is capable of maintaining it's current status is it's solid backbone of software. This is one major criteria which most phone developers should emphasize on. WinMo might be a stone age OS, but out there there are tonnes of softwares to unleash the potential of the phone. Even my 5 year old antique PDA still capable of providing daily web & you tube usage.

Though it seems I'm all againts this new phone, I would still give credit on Nokia for moving forward. It's more like they've gear the design objective towards a pocket mobile computing. Which I think is excellent. No more Iphone killer motto. Just aim at what you're good at.

We will see Maemo to be a inferior to Andriod. However, Like I say, softwares are the key component in keeping the phone running. Thus I will still keep my fingers cross till the whole phone has been launched.

I don't think this phone is coming to malaysia. mini n97 and x6 are there on nokia.com.my website, but no trace of n900.

It will sure to come or else they'd be losing good profits to APers.

The price is cheaper then expected. Thought will be RM3k+ above. But might come out same like N97 RRP RM2480. But the problem is, is it coming to Malaysia or not?

QUOTE(Vervain @ Sep 7 2009, 09:16 PM)

*
N97 is not as quite as bad as it seem...not to mention 2 mil units been sold since the last 3 months....if this rate goes on it will surpass the 17 mil record of N95 in no time...n the ui is not that bad too...i must agree that it is not for everyone....it either loves it or hating it to death tongue.gif
But yeah there is some points i had to agree there...the innards is quite outdated....n nokia oni do little to shoehorn touch interface onto s60v3...resulting in a quite annoying ui...n sullen the legendary reputation of s60 that already served millions of people worldwide sad.gif

N900 is still a very promising device and hve lots of potential...I hve been following this device for already a long time n I hve to say its a beast...a full fledged desktop linux os in your pocket is still very drool worthy drool.gif

I wouldn't say that maemo is inferior to android....each of its own hve their own speciality....but as i said earlier a full fledged desktop linux os in a pocketable form is very drool worthy...in terms of software yes android is still hving an advantage on this front....but in terms of raw power Maemo pawns android in no time...n if u wants u can also run android ON Maemo OS

Correct me if im wrong though...juz sharing my thoughts here icon_rolleyes.gif

One thing is that its camera is only 5MP, while 5MP is pretty good, it should set itself higher than other Nokia phones, I wish it could have an 8MP like the N86

I wonder what resolution the TV out puts out?
I hope nokia steps it up to a bit. 320x240 looks ugly and presenting slideshows on TV are a pain to the eyes with current ones.

BTW, nice screen resolution 800x480. Great for high quality videos.

The thing I like most about this phone is that you don't need to use your notebook/laptop waiting for it to boot and start browsing. With smartphone like this, you can just hit the browse button and you can browse the internet. It's very simple and you can do while relaxing on your bed. lol. Love my N97 and wish this babe come to Malaysia. But sadly though, no news about it coming to malaysia cry.gif cry.gif

Possibly a late release.
The hype and popularity of the N97 probably scared it off a bit.

Currently considering e72 and Omnia Pro B7610 (Louvre) beside this phone.

- e72   : 2 big issues (lacks TV-out function) (lacks big screen)
- n900  : 2 questions (can edit MS docs?) (can synchronize with windows PC?)
- Omnia Pro : seems to have everything, plus AMOLED screen.

Agreed, too heavy for a phone. But good attempt by ITG anyway. I think one of the biggest issue is stability. Lets just wait & see.

Also, be aware of a new 4.3" screen Archos, a would be hp-internet tablet running on Android 1.6 OS drool.gif

It seems Nokia 7705 twist using Maemo OS despite the similarities between this and N900. Wonder if Nokia wanna replace Symbian with Maemo. If that the case, then it's a bad start. Hopefully they don't abandon Symbian

It's a swivel actually.. It won't come to Malaysia. I ask Nokia, here's the email reply:

"In response to your inquiry, please be informed Ms. Nadia that it is unlikely that the Nokia 7705 Twist will be released in Malaysia as it is a CDMA type Nokia phone. Malaysia uses the GSM signal which is not supported by the Nokia 7705 Twist.

Kindly be advised that all new product launches are carrier and market dependent in all countries due to the tests carried out to ensure compatibility with network and government regulations.

Hope this answers your inquiry Ms. Nadia and have a great day!"

erk. They used originally used ARM based processor is because it's small enough to fit in a mobile device. & its tailor made for lower power devices.

If you're still skeptic on the whole idea. You may google for Moorestown. The platform is currently in development, integrating all graphics, processing, video encoder/decoder, wifi, 3g, wimax, gps, mobile TV & bluetooth. Intel will shed some light on 2010. Also, they will be introducing Moblin OS, another contender to Maemo.

@Nokia 7705 Twist
Ditto. The phone only supports 800mhz & 1900mhz. That includes certain other countries like japan. It's more geared towards messaging group, certainly falls under the sidekick league.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

@Nokia 7705 Twist
Ditto. The phone only supports 800mhz & 1900mhz. That includes certain other countries like japan. It's more geared towards messaging group, certainly falls under the sidekick league.
*
AFAIK both Atom and ARM based procs are designed for low powered devices with low power consumption in mind...but Atom procs are way power hungry than ARM based ones...sourcing from here it is shown that Atom procs consume bout 2 watt of power while ARM ones usually consume around half a watt...besides ARM procs are very efficient...dats y it can be used without a fan or heatsink nod.gif

Im not skeptic on the idea of using Atoms procs on a handheld...and Moblin is looking quite good too...but lets wait n see what Intel hve under their hood regarding the power consumption of the Atom procs...they can clock it down to 800 mhz to decrease the power usage nod.gif

BTW am I the only one who thinks that Moblin 2.1 looks quite the same as Maemo 5 lol laugh.gif

I'm one of Nokia fans in facebook. Recently got this wall from Nokia

"Nokia is looking for the world’s most skilled designers, artists, hackers and modders. Mission: Hack the Nokia N900. For inspiration see the PUSH N900 example hacks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9zicb-bo48) and submit your hack at http://blogs.nokia.com/pushn900/

Check this youtube out! Now you can hack or whatever u want to do with the Maemo!

If im not mistaken there will be quite a num of apps available via the repo on the N900...not to mention some of great apps from the N800/ N810 days was already ported over to maemo 5 such as gPodder (podcast manager), RSS reader (also intergrated with the web browser), Mauku (Jaiku/ Twitter client) n Transmission (torrent client) to name a few. There also apps from Nokia as well such as Ovi Maps (although in mobile- review.com review its performance not matches its s60 counterpart) n Bounce (game). But as I said earlier there will be quite a number of apps provided on the repository n the num is increasing steadily icon_rolleyes.gif

Apparent yes, from the looks of it. Anyway, some other leads indicate it will be release around end of October, tentatively that is.

Multitouch support will come out on Maemo 6. Yes pinch gesture support. However not on this device as the screen is resistive touch. sweat.gif

Satio works on symbian (s60v5), while n900 on maemo. another OS to consider is winmo. This is one strong competitor to those two :

X1 is not outdated in my opinion. WM in it's heart still can run all current windows mobile application. The set back was only due poor hardware. Again, check 1st before hammering this gem. It can run more media compared to Satio. Yes, I noticed it can support MKV format with core player.

Samsung & HTC are both great phone. To me if I were to pick between satio or samsung, I will choose samsung unfortunately. The hardware and screen is just breath taking. I find SE satio is just overrated. Sorry.

Added on October 4, 2009, 8:02 pmHmm... suddenly realize this device might be capable of running lossless music files. Putting my hopes on. Well here are some snippets for eager enthusiast on the OS itself.

Well that's your own perspective. Everyone has their own personal view & opinion.

To me SE is good & I do use a SE phone. Unfortunately Samsung excels in both hardware specs & design. Feel free to check out the specs. The only issue is, they need to wrinkle out is the software portion. If they managed to tick it right, it would work flawlessly. SE on the other hand undoubtedly has been around during Ericsson era. Unfortunately I cannot sense the greatness as I feel during the past. I may be wrong here as aino might embark a better journey. If you observe closely on Samsung's market, you will find more US carrier's are making their own propitiatory samsung devices. You might say quantity of model might overshadow the figures. But from the facts, this does indicate there is a demand for Samsung devices in US. In Asia, the market is widely acceptable.

Btw I'm standing on a neutral point of view. Addendum, I find Samsung's pricing is somewhat reasonable & affordable. SE needs to work hard on capturing the market back to it's yesteryear glory.

If you really want to compare Japan Vs Korea, you need to put japan's Keittai denwa into comparison. They fair much better than SE. Yes, I own one P905I, & the screen is very good for a TFT. Check out the exotic J-phone section.

Yep totally agrees on ur view. In my opinion, SE smartphones is quite good but the pricing is very overpriced. I still remember the OMGWTF price when X1 was launched sweat.gif

While Samsung is really pushing on the pricing. U could see that they are providing phones at every price point. And the features is quite good too. If im not mistaken the oni company that managed to do this besides Samsung is Nokia, providing good phones on good prices.

In short, in my opinion, I think SE really need to rethink their pricing policy icon_rolleyes.gif

looks promising. The selling point is the mouse cursor!! My only complain is there's no standalone youtube application. Videos ran on the browser are somewhat choppy.

Mind sharing the source? If so, salute a sucidal act by SE. RM 3480, I would rather spend it on 3gs.

It's not to say there is no Garmin support. I would rather look at it as a potential. It's just a matter of time for the developers to come out the same software for Garmin maps.

Mind sharing the source? If so, salute a sucidal act by SE. RM 3480, I would rather spend it on 3gs.

It's not to say there is no Garmin support. I would rather look at it as a potential. It's just a matter of time for the developers to come out the same software for Garmin maps.
*
Yup...also dun forget that if Garmin can easily port their navigation app for their Nuvifone G60 that also run linux if they decide to develop garmin for Maemo icon_rolleyes.gif

If retail price is going to be rm 2499, I don't think AP agents would benefit with a soaring 1k selling price difference with a least warranty package. Unless if, that is if, the retail model will only be launched much later than now.

looks promising. The selling point is the mouse cursor!! My only complain is there's no standalone youtube application. Videos ran on the browser are somewhat choppy.

Just be patient and wait till it hits our store. Retail sets are much trouble free compared to those bought from foreign stores. Not to mention during delivery, some irresponsible post personnel might improperly handle the parcel. I've seen some phones mailed over with shattered screens. Recommend to pay more for assurance plus you get nationwide warranty coverage with authorized distributor.

According to the latest update, they've included MMS due to mass critics demand for the feature. Anyway, I don't think we would use much on MMS. Most of us would prefer uploading the photos or videos via email or other sharing services as MMS has it's own limit.

It's more like a necessity. You don't normally use it. But at times, it's handy. Sending picture of how the shop looks like when your friend is struggling to meet you up on a location. GPS don't show you the real scene unless you have google streetview.

Well here's another daily dose of N900 before the end of today
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lining up 1st is the hardware capabilities. You see some test been conducted on the phone itself.

Next! Unboxing. What you'll get when you buy the phone. Well it's not official but I would be certain it should be same. I don't think NOKIA is mean in skimming off peripherals. My last n90 was packed with goodies.

Finally some showcase briefing from Nokia representatives. YES, Hilarious. Nokia has done it, they've gear up so much tech and functionality in the phone that they forgot to include the 3G video call feature. & there is a secondary camera, don't get me wrong. Guess they will include the feature on the upcoming firmware update.

Enjoy. icon_rolleyes.gif

There is still much to firm up. We have yet seen the unit been operate under daily usage. What worries me are the bugs. Speculations running wild. This phone either release at the end of this month or on november.

Added on October 10, 2009, 7:54 pmDarn.. I'm slowly incline to this phone due to lossless media capabilities.. The 32gig internal storage and additional storage really benefits media freakos.

Anyhow here's a short video of the phone running media on a giant screen. Looks promising for now.

We all know this phone comes with a FM receiver.. too bad there is no FM radio software on it. Still waiting for developers to work out the software. BUT WAIT IT COMES WITH A FM TRANSMITTER???? I'm not insane but someone mentioned this can independently run like a fm modulator. Similar to the LG arena.

Nice...but we hve to be contented with n900 atm lol laugh.gif

Btw some of the tester that got the pre production units at Maemo Summit reported that the battery life is quite good...if the quoted 8 hours of REALLY heavy use by the tester is true then one of the main gripes of n900 is already solved by nokia rclxm9.gif

quoted from here

But as n900 uses the same batt as Nokia 5800, u can always buy 1700mAh extended batt that also happened to be hving the same size as the ori batt if u need more juice nod.gif

Berita lama. Reason why it's not implemented now is they need Maemo to grow 1st. Once the community and software has matured, then more implementation can be introduced. You can't just squeeze out all the capabilities... there wouldn't be much fresh hype later.

Some video you post says it will be release early next year. Ermph.

btw, check the N920

QUOTE
user posted image
Nokia N920 showed its fancy face for the first time. The N900 successor is rumored to be a touch-only device with a huge 4.13-inch capacitive screen, ARM Cortex A8 CPU, 32GB internal memory and Maemo 6 OS.

Well that wasn't such a surprise, since the rumors for the N920 flooded the web since the N900 announcement. While the N900 sports a hardware full QWERTY keyboard and a smaller resistive screen, the N920 should leave the keyboard and upgrade the screen to the capacitive technology allowing for multi-touch input.

Following the N900, the N920 will also come with GSM connectivity, along with HSPA capabilities. All the other connectivity stuff will be also onboard - Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth. The standard 3.5 mm audio jack is not forgotten along with the microSD card slot. The camera will remain the same as the N900 - a 5 megapixel unit.

The CPU is rumored to be the same as the one on Nokia N900 - the 600 MHz ARM Cortex A8 embedded on the OMAP3430 platform. The Maemo OS is supposed to be next sixth iteration, which is quite doubtful given the fact that ver. 5 has just been announced with N900. No matter the version however, the N920 UI is expected to implement more portrait-oriented applications and interface in contrast to the all-landscape N900.

Despite its GSM powers, the N920 remains a tablet device and will centralize around the VoIP telephony along with all the modern social networking stuff and integration.

In conclusion, we've gotta admit the Nokia N920 surely impresses and intrigues. However until everything is official, we can only speculate here. There's always the possibility that this is just the next Chinese interpretation that will try to make use of the hype that surrounds N900 - Nokia's latest tablet.

And Nokia N900 is certainly not a phone. While you can feel that most Nokia smartphones are designed as phones, with “smart” functions added on top and around, N900 feels the opposite. Like a small screen computer with a phone functionality added on top.

heard rumours it was 2.5k est.well it may just may be 2.8k here.tax and all of the other non sense.

n97 = 2.4k

why not throw a couple of more cnotes to get n900.

if Bank Islam do a promotion on this hp. confirm everyone convert bank islam.

:'( i feel tricked on joining the bank islam promotion

n97 for 200x12 :'(

+ additional info on the n900 : word on the streets says the earliest 20th october for us shipments but i also am getting replys from maemo community forum that its gonna released mid November.

I guess this means late January for us to get the phone.

Not really, if you're talking about gesture zooming, they've come up with a intuitive solution. Check out the gesture zooming, it can be done with one finger. Screen response is pretty good based on review. & to solve the text input issue, they've included the qwerty is there for blazing fast input. Main reason why they're sticking this devices with a resistive, plausibly because there's a special hover mouse function. The mouse needs precise guidance, if you're using capacitive, it might be hard to pin point the position with a large finger.

For future owners

yeah..check it out

there is a lot of discussion on what to do with n900 or maemo 5..and the best thing is, a lot of developer join the discussion too.

some of the topic i like -> n64 emu, slr style control over n900 camera, topic about games/apps to be ported to n900 etc

and can join with the n900 enthusiast community on all over the world

iPhone is too crippled/restricted for me. I'll be waiting for N900 or SE Xperia X10 (Rachael) ... lightyears ahead of iPhone smile.gif

If you prefer the formfactor of iPhone or the capacitive touch screen.. wait for SE to announce the X10 on Nov 3 first (superior hardware specs and "non-closed" Android OS smile.gif )

Weight with WII

Gaming with cool controller. Awesome feature is, now it can accept 2 player controller input.

Fennec, another better breakthrough browser. Much Touchscreen friendly.

Virtual screen keyboard

Now.. you anticipating it more?

Some other tidbits for all. Its the FM radio ui on N900 rclxms.gif
As all of us know that Nokia was so smart in providing the fm receiver n transmitter on N900 but didn't provide the app to use it. Luckily the community take the matter into their own hand and develop an app for that

I have bought an N800, and let me tell you that the Maemo platform is crap for a very simple reason: no binary stability !!

What I mean is that each new release of the OS changes system libraries and breaks a non trivial percentage of existing applications. Many applications developed for the N770 won't run on the N800 due to ABI library differences. My N800 went through several OS updates, and each time this crashed at least one of the installed apps I had.

Also some applications you find on the web won't work because their author didn't want to rebuild them for the new hotness (the fussiness of the SDK might also be responsible for this).

At least Android doesn't have this problem. That's probably why they have more than 10000 apps on Market, while Maemo has been in existence for far more longer and probably doesn't have one tenth of this number available. So much for the "ease of porting existing apps" stuff...

Well it depends on how you perceive. The inverse can be found Here

n900 is much like a pc. Very much it's easier to port from PC application to this midget. If you're talking about available apps, well nokia has went ahead with Qik if not mistaken. This means app from symbian can be ported to maemo. n800 and below are device which didn't grasp much of the market due to the nature of the tablet device which did not come with telephony feature. Anyhow, Andriods are much easier to develop as compared to maemo. But then again, if you're a power user, N900 should put you at the edge.

Fennec beta walkthrough. The browser is good, easy to move about. But I still prefer the original mozilla browser preloaded in the device. The gesture zoom and kinetic scrolling is just awesome than this app. But then again this have add-on support. Yes you hear me add-on, this app can support add-on similar to firefox which can add-on plug-in. Anyhow, here's the video. Enjoy.

Hardware wise, yes they do have front camera. Rumor has it, they will polish up the feature video call and MMS function on coming firmware. & yes, some reviewer claim the camera cover does have a tolerance gap in between to avoid any potential scratches.

If u look closely at the picture, it's different from n97. N900 lens is deeper in. Whereas N97 there's a glass just beneath the slider.

This is a little off-topic but has anyone heard of the Nokia 1280? It costs only 20euro. tongue.gif Sure beats the hell out of N900 with that kind of price.

Most Powderful mobile phone browser? You make the judgement as the device loads heavy java scripts

Yes, Google is really integrating andriod to run most of it's service on the net. The integration is awesome, but still you need to sync to enjoy it. I still think n900 work great out of the box. PC experience on the little midget. just my 2 cent

For those who fear of losing their beloved GPS apps (garmin etc) if they gonna switch to N900, Sygic already announced that they will provide it for Maemo 5.
QUOTE
Sygic announces the compatibility of its Mobile Maps turn-by-turn navigation application with the new Nokia Maemo mobile phones. The application will get ready for sale from Sygic web site e-shop by the end of 2009.

Turn-by-turn voice guided navigation software Sygic Mobile Maps converts mobile phones into full-featured navigation devices. Sygic now extends its current compatibility range to support the new Nokia Maemo 5 OS devices. Further operating systems supported already are iPhone, Symbian, Android and Windows Mobile, incl. Windows Mobile 6.5.

All currently available regional apps for other operating systems are in progress to be available on Nokia Maemo:
Australia & New Zealand, South East Asia (incl. Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia)
Brazil, Colombia, North America (incl. USA, Canada & Mexico), US
Complete Europe, UK & Ireland, Russia
Gulf Countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates)

"We are happy to announce the compatibility of Sygic Mobile Maps with Nokia's new Maemo 5 OS. Currently we are in the phase of quality assurance performing final tests. We are working hard to launch it for sales by the end of 2009, but we won't hesitate to make this sooner anytime when ready." comments Anna Hurbanic, Sygic's PR Manager.

whao... i want this phone deadly...

the 12 apps test is torturic... though i dnt even treat my desktop / laptop this way... somehow, it demostrated its limit. thx for posting that.

in concern that this phone can directly browse the internet, unlike other phone where will filtered out all a lot of apps on the internet page (java script, advertisements etc), i'm a lil concern on how about the bugs, trojen, virus filting? is it integrated with anti-virus or firewall or something?

somehow, both 'yes' and 'no' for the question brings further discussion..

for 'yes', that n900 is integrated with anti-virus software: jz like computer, anti-virus software needs constant virus defiantion updates to catch up with 'modern virus'. and we know what happen next is it took half of our memory speed as it needs to scan all running program at background.

for 'no' or low anti-virus filtering system, it means internet browser is much permeable to virus treats... and wonder how diffensive the n900 maemo 5 firmware against those treats...

and also one more concern of mine.... how about the battery? how long can it last for average uses?

If you'd used linux before, you will know even with the firewall off, your chances of being hit by worm is much slimmer than windows. Same goes to maemo. Plus, it very much dependent to the browser design when surfing on malicious site. Firefox has a good track record on reliability though.

Battery wise, it's subjective. Some tester claim one whole day under heavy use. Some 2 days, some even in a matter of hours. Pretty much boils down on what application you're using.

To me, this device excels alot. But because of it's short lifespan, I'm going to shift my attention to something else. & when I say short lifespan, I'm projecting that this device would not live for the next 6 month as Maemo 6 is coming out first quarter of the year. You can very much sum up the device is a testbed for nokia.

from what i heard at the forum nokia conference maemo5 (n900) can't be ported over to maemo6 and i believe the N900 is some sort of beta test for the consumer, wanna test market first.

Good to know that this phone is to test the market only.

Overall Nokia has announced that they will release Maemo 6, but how far maemo 6 is better that maemo 5?

Would it consume more processing power? rclxub.gif

We should wait and see

well.. i still want my physical keyboard!

i think the next gen of smart phones will be 1Ghz chips already.. if not the device will be considered 2009 model.. hehe

It's useless if the OS cannot make use of the fast processing power. There will be a few n900 capable of running maemo 6 but strict distinctly for developers only. 9 years ago, everyone was debating on a 1ghz laptop stamina. Today we have mobile devices running at such speed. It's mighty hard to debate hardware capabilities. You can roll out extreme good gadgets but not making full use of it is just utterly bad.

Let's flood the thread with n900 videos.

Flashing a n900

Tutorial on sharing clips in FB

Pairing up a WII controller.

Unboxing video seen from somewhere. Posting it cause the background music is awesome

Fancy on running Windows 3.1.1? Bringing back the glory of MS-DOS

Multitasking at it's edge. See how many windows you can run at one time.

N900's own App Library. It's free btw since it's opensource

As of time, My pick would be either 3GS or this. If it lives for another 5 years, this would be a good antique to be kept. Waiting for N900's price tag as of time.

garmin is like a trademark for nokia smartphone.

It can be ported from symbian. But NOkia would prefer their own personalized GPS application with maps.

Retro games anyone?

how may apps are there in store officially? They are free as it seems.

I can only have a max 6 pack of abs. But this owner manages to open 27 apps on the device.

Symbian is still good enuf for me. Though the out of memory error really is dissapointing, considerin it has happens since from the N80.

Plus symbian phones are getting lower prices, N97 2.1k compare to N95 launch 3.5K.

if a great phone like that dun covers our place, thn it is a waste even if we managed to own it somehow... language (chinese support), AGPS, broadband, GSM, connectivity,.... we knew that our Barang Naik country dont have great coverage of networks, if Nokia duwan to devolop on poor connectivity regions such as this, thn the phone is no longer 24-h internet device phone anymore..

i hope Nokia will outsource China developers. they dont have to develop themselves, jz give liscence to other ppl to do it. and i still hope in the future we get to try maemo series phone, not jz this model.

i know its not bad... 512 ddr plus 128 ROM, total of 640 RAM comparing to n900, 1gb RAM; pocessor different; and majorly its symbian vs maemo.

overall, in term of software, symbian n97 shud be better thn n900 maemo, since maemo 5 of n900 is a 'white mouse experiment' for nokia, while n97 symbian already undergo so many optimum changes that ideals for internet users.

somehow, n97's hardware's performance is quite limited, such as the RAM, graphic processor and multi-task management. well, after looking at the KING processor n900, who would want to look behind at n97?

still, i dont like the design of n97, jz and only jz bcoz the three solid keypads on the front touch screen LCD cover.

Yup bro, Symbian has limitations especially when using it to surf the web, easily out of memory. Even my WM5 old pda has same problem when using Opera 9.5. If planning to surf better get a mini laptop like IMHO.

I am really curious what Maemo is different from Symbian, and the amazon selling prize is super amazing.

i need to invent the unmanned submarine guided by gps to smuggle in handphones via thailand maybe lolz xD

sauce? well it's just rumour. someone working under Nokia N-series PR section said they have no plans to bring out from the continent. Well, compared to other phones, nokia is somewhat reliable and robust. (other than n97). So i think it's fair to say it would be a bargain if someone managed to bring it out and sell it in asia or australia.

you can always mail nokia to check out.

Guys, I think we should wait for C-Series. It might equip with Maemo platform. I'm so dying for maemo after heard many problem from HD2 reviews which make me down much (check htc hd2 topics). So far, as part "GEEK", maemo is in my heart.

Somehow, after watching this video

I think 600Mhz N900 is superior then 1Ghz from HTC HD2. HD2 can't multitask well. I saw 30+ application running on N900 just gave me WOW. Haven't see HD2 on multasking yet.

they can but not live. Also their virtual memory is limited to less than 500mb. n900 can go 1gig with 756mb on page.

it's not the hardware that's holding up. it's the OS. If HD2 were to run maemo, it can eat n900 for breakfast lunch & dinner.

If you're a "geek", then you're dying for this.

I somehow prefer N900> HD2. But no N900 in Asia, so...that's a hard decisions. Just hoping C series will pack with maemo.><

That would translate to RM2150+. Anyone know the tax percentage? My guess is that it would be the same price as N97 when it was first introduced.

I would say, wait it out until it hits 2.3k or less.

i have a feeling AP set for N900 gonna be sky high, just look at iphone when first time imported set comes to our shore saw the price is unbelievable man.

And now they know Nokia is not shipping to Asia YET they sure gonna take advantage and raise the price as high as they like.

For the people who are interested in the N900 in Asia/SE Asia.

Bad news from semi-reliable source.

Hopefully the people who do grey imports (AP) in Malaysia pick up Nokia's slack.

yeap. i jz went for a short conversation with my source..
if Nokia is not launching this device in asia, and we insists to purchase it wadever way we use, we are on our own:
no warrenty coverage,
no guarantee the phone can be unlocked for malaysian sim card,
no service regrading technical problems (since we use quite a lot of unsecured apps) etc..

no idea regrading mailing, but wont have big problem if bring 1 unit thru kastam by hand carry.

I been a nokia follower since Nokia 7650 smartphone. I do not face issue like virus or crash because i usually know how to solve them. Bluetooth transfers usually dont copy virus over because u need accept if it send more than 1 file. If hack or crack suddenly transfer then yes. My phone i always put in hidden mode with bluetooth on because my BH503 headset, my house bluetooth etc etc requires the use of bluetooth

Well, ditching all hopes after habouring for more than 1.5 months. Production models does differ with the prototypes. Physical deterioration in performance can be seen on the browser itself. Sorry N900, you're just a love at 1st sight.
