It's time to have our own blu-ray movies section under Home Entertainment since a lot of us moved on from PS3 to dedicated blu-ray player.

How good a HD or BD PQ and SQ all boils down to how much effort the owner of the material put "transfering/translating" the source material (the orginal film) to HD formats.

Take 2001 for example, alot of effort were put into transfering that to BD and the end results shows! Even some newer movie cannot compare in terms of PQ and SQ...

This is NOT a new thing. The same applies to DVD. Not all DVD are equal. But, with HD, the end product's PQ and SQ's quality are MORE apparent

For 2001: A Space Odissey, it's not just efforts that gave the excellent PQ. The film was shot on a 70mm film, essentially double the resolution of the 35mm normally used today. Nowadays only IMAX format uses 70mm film, you can see the difference between IMAX and anamorphic 35mm Panavision scenes in one same movie, The Dark Knight. The documentary, Baraka also uses 70mm (using some customized camera, not IMAX) and the PQ is simply stunning, one the best PQ on BD out there (scanned at 8k resolution instead of 4k normally, and downconverted to 2k (1080p) for the BD). Predator was given the best transfer but was not cosidered as good PQ with so much grains, but that's just how the film supposed to look.

About grains, they are natural properties of the analogue film stock. Scenes shot in dark will further enhance them, even with digital cameras because of the lighting and camera ISO etc. Actually no one likes grain, but the problem is, when you remove (DNR) the grains you will also lost the details, making the PQ soft. In worst cases with to much DNR, the people will look waxy. Some digitally shot film, like Miami Vice, grains were intentionallly added digitally to give film-like and gritty image. On the other hand, Zodiac, which was also digitally shot using the same Viper camera, has very minimal grain and the PQ is just excellent.

For AQ, mostly is lossless, so it's bit-by-bit identical to the studio master. Normal Dolby Digital on DVD usually stripped to 448kbps, but the Dolby TrueHD of my Celine Dion: A New Day BD maintains 10mbps average with 24-bit/96kHz sampling. When you hear some bad lossless audio, it's the source not the format, so blame the bad sound design mixing/editing by the sound engineers.

The studio masters are usually in big PCM format. In the early days of BD, they just put the whole thing on the disc. That's why you see a lot of old titles using this format. With this, all you need is a DAC to convert to analogue and an amplifier to power the speakers. But, by putting the PCM master on the disc, a lot of space will be taken. That space can be used to maximise the bitrate of the movie itself and/or put some bonus features. This is where DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD come in.

DTS-HD MA/Dolby TrueHD works like a ZIP tool, they losslessly compress (encode) the PCM and save a lot of space on the disc. Then it's up to the player or AV receiver to "unzip" (decode) the format to get the uncompressed PCM. If the player does the "unzipping", it will send the uncompressed PCM via HDMI to the receiver which will convert to analogue (i.e. BD60). Some players (except PS3) has it's own DAC, converting to analogue itself before sending it to receivers via the multi-channel analogue outs, very handy for older receivers without HDMI (i.e. BD80). Almost all players (except PS3) can send the DTS-HD MA/Dolby TrueHD untouched (still "zipped", HDMI only) to the receiver, this method is called bitstream. This way the receiver will do the "unzipping", DAC, and amplify. If the receiver uses better decoding chip (PS3 uses software decoding, not hardware), you should hear some difference in the AQ.

You don't need a new amp even with DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD. Just get a player with multi-channel analogue outs, like BD80 or your own BD55. These players MUST have their own decoding capability in order to get the PCM, convert it to analogue (DAC) and sends out using the multi-channel analogue outs to older amps. nod.gif

Actually PCM itself on the disc can be worse for owners of PS3 or players without multi-channel outs (like BD60) conneting to older amp, because they will have to use the optical/coaxial connection that can't carry the high bitrate multi-channel PCM track (bandwidth limitation). Using optical/coaxial will downmix the multi-channel PCM track to stereo! But with DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD, inside the codec there is a backup track of normal DTS (1.5mbps) and Dolby Digital (640kbps) that will be bitstreamed to your amp via the optical/coaxial, so you'll still get multi-channel audio, only not lossless.

Of course it's subjective. Some even argued that the lossy DTS/Dolby Digital audio is better than lossless. There's someone here even started a thread about it. laugh.gif

If two different machines uses different chip to decode, it's possible that you'll hear some difference, like I did when I compare between my PS3 (software internal decoding) and my receiver (hardware decoding bitstreamed from BD35). But if you use PS3, you have no choice but to let the PS3 do the decoding because it can;t bitstream.

Thanks for all the feedback about 'grains' in pictures. Can I conclude that:-

1) 'Older' films tend to be more grainy.

2) Newer ones will have lesser grains unless intentional

3) There is no way to remove grains all together? Only minimising it?

However, I only notice 'grains' when watching HD and not at lower resolutions. Why is that? Is it because HD (ie. higher resolutions) tend to enhance 'flaws'?

1) Not really. All films shot on analogue film stock will have grains. But on 70mm film the grains will be much finer, so the grains aren't that obvious and no need to DNR (DNR will remove grains but it also removes details and sharpness).

2) Same as above. Only digitally shot film should have lesser grains (dark scenes). Majority of theatrical movies now still uses analogue film.

3) Yes you can. But like I said, it will make the PQ seems flat, soft and fleshtones looks like they're made of wax. Lowry Digital (now owned by DTS Labs) is very good job in cleaning noise (dirt, specks, etc) but they won't simply remove the grain if it compromises the PQ.

Of course, at higher resolution you'll see more details, even the grains. That's why you don't see them on DVDs. This why HD is so wonderful.

Alex Proyas is one of my favorite director. Watched Dark City BD again yesterday. Still amazed. The director's cut is much better with the removal of the opening narration (as he originally intended), keeping the mystery even more interesting.

So I have this Knowing pre-ordered. A blind buy for me. I'll keep an open mind watching it, hopefully it will not suck.

Dark City was trashed by critics when it was theatrically released (except for Roger Ebert, he's pretty much alone at that time). Now it's a classic.

Thanks, you almost answered everything i need to know rclxms.gif

So if I buy, say, The Phantom Menace (shot digitally) I should see significant less grains, if not none, right?

Noob Question - DNR (I assume its Dolby Noise Reduction?) - the removal is done during the transfer or we have to do select it manually with the player? blush.gif

No problem, but's that's just my input, maybe others have more to add or to correct me if I'm wrong.

First, The Phantom Menace has not been released on blu-ray. Secondly, the movie was not 100% digitally shot, actually there is only one scene that was shot using digital camera (I think in the Jedi Council room). But Episode II and III both was shot fully digitally shot using Sony digital cameras. What's even better with digital movies, there's no analogue-to-digital transfer process, they just encode and put it on the disc with the proper resolution. For analogue movies they have to scan the film negatives to computer.

DNR is Digital Noise Reduction. Yes, DNR was done during the transfer from film medium, but they can still be applied later in the process too. Your TV also has it, but it usually focused to clean the noise in the broadcast signal.

*
True, both 2001 and Baraka were filmed in 70mm. But scanning the negative/positive to digital format, it NOT a matter of just scanning from film to harddisk/storage.

I remember that when George Lucas reissued the Star Wars: New Hope, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, he made it an effort to inform end-user the pain staking work they put in to reissued the said material. (Some film stock Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and black, run/evaporate. And to make matters worst, they evaporate at different rate. So the master stock of the said star wars movie, appeared "greenish") Also, depending on how the master film stocks are handled, scratches and dust particles might accumulate as well (if you had watched Grindhouse, Death Trap and Planet Terror, you'll know how this will look. The difference is in Grindhouse, this EFFECT is on purpose). So during (where film dust and scratches can be handled)/after scanning master film stocks to digital format (reintroducing missing Cyan, Magenta and Yellow information can be done).

So quality of BD disc is still up to how much effort the owner of the material puts into it. Disney company has a good track record when it come to introducing their movie on BD.

Sony because of lack of content, bought MGM for it's James Bond property!!

Some company, issued movies like Speed Racer, maybe because it bombed at the box office, doesn't even have PCM/Dolby Digital HD/Master DTS Lossless for it's sound track!!?!

I remember in the initial stage of introducing the DVD format, because the Mpeg II decoding was still relatively new, the people who are encoding from analog to digital found that encoding analog to digital were iffy at time. Like the scene in The Exorcist, where there is a shot of the headlights of a train, encoding the same scene several time gave several DIFFERENT results....

So in short lets hope the different movie company really understand the reason behind people buying BD is because of the PQ and SQ and therefore invest in proper translation.

I didn't argue about how much "efforts" will affect the transfer. Read my post carefully, I said "not just efforts" which means I agree but there are other factors too.

Let's say the studio put the same transfer "efforts" for 2 movies, one 70mm and the other 35mm. Same condition etc, the 70mm should still be better than 35mm right? That's my whole point. It's just one of many factors.

Er... I wasn't disagree with your 70mm vs 30 mm statement.

I apologise if my previous thread "sounded" agressive

If there were any agression, believe me it is more towards produces of BD disc who believe that people would buy the BD because it is a bd and no effort whatsoever needs to be put into producing the bd

Watched a very good movie 2 nights ago. Warlords....Very aggresive mix. PQ very good, some shots a little soft, some grain and some noise in the dark areas. Overall, very good. SQ very good. Mandarin PCM 7 channels I think.

These HK guys really take the effort in making it realistic, that much I tell u. Rivals the big budget Hollywood ie, Gladiator...

Very good acting by the 3 main leads...

Also after not being able to watch Baraka due to its region coding (Region B) managed to catch about 1/2 hr on the region free Oppo. Fantastic, some ringing can be seen on some scenes but I believe it is due to the higher than usual downconversion (same as the IMAX scenes in Dark Knight) slightly apparent in some scenes, but overall thumbup.gif

Oh Yeah, the DTS-HDMA on Baraka is superb.

Michael Jackson's Final Rehearsal Rumored for Blu-ray

When Michael Jackson died last week, he was rehearsing for a final series of live concerts in London. Those gigs will obviously never happen, but Jackson's last rehearsal, recorded in multi-camera, high-definition video, could be released on Blu-ray, according to concert promoters cited by the British newspaper The Independent.

The recordings were part of the deal between Jackson and concert promotion company AEG Live, which included a plan to produce a CD, DVD and Blu-ray of what Jackson had billed his "final performance" tour, titled This Is It.

One AEG official is reported to have boasted to a colleague: "We have a live album in the can." The rehearsal, which went on for several hours, included dancers, musicians and aerial performers.

Patrick Woodroffe, lighting designer, watched the final rehearsal. He said: "We had rehearsed for the last couple weeks. We put together a complicated show, quite a spectacular show. Of course a huge part of it was him, and I would say for the last week he hadn't really been with us. He would appear, and he would rehearse sometimes, and he would not rehearse."

Randy Phillips, president of AEG Live, has refused to comment for the story.

As in the case of Marantz, the bass is always on the safe side, which some ppl categorize as 'ample' or 'soft'. I find Denon to be sufficient, which is why I like it so much wub.gif The surround steering is always priceless (probably due to its floating point DSP) thumbup.gif

Mega, when you are free, pls drop by my pad to test the SVS smile.gif

Yes, this scene is very good to test sub. The sub peaked at 106dB. A massive surge of 42dB against normal dialogue.

I beg to differ. The R1 DVD kick-ass! My personal top 3 DTS, alongside Gladiator & all three LOTR extended versions. icon_rolleyes.gif
The aggresive mix will give any sub a good workout. Cant wait to see how DTS-MA will better the previous version when the BDs are released.

Speaking of Gladiator, if you like the DVD then prepare for the sonic awesomeness of lossless DTS-HD Master Audio. Also to e released are Braveheart and Forrest Gump. I'm posting this again for everyone here.

Paramount will be releasing 3 titles in their new Sapphire Series.

Sept 1, 2009:

GLADIATOR

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

The Blu-ray presentation will include both the original theatrical version of the film as well as the extended version in 1080p High Definition with English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, French 5.1 Dolby Digital and Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital, as well as English, English SDH, French, Spanish and Korean subtitles.

The two-disc set also will feature over four hours of bonus material including, but not limited to, the following:

* Audio Commentary: Two separate commentaries accompany the original theatrical version and extended version of the film.
* The Scrolls of Knowledge: The original trivia track has been newly enhanced with focus points allowing viewers to access a series of new behind-the-scenes featurettes exploring key scenes and how they relate to the historical accuracy depicted in the film. The extended version of the film also includes a deleted scene marker.
* Visions From Elysium: Topic Marker: Viewers can tag moments of interest throughout either version of the film, allowing them to create "shopping lists" of topics to learn more about. Thanks to the Blu-ray player's memory, the topics will automatically be loaded when Disc 2 is inserted, giving viewers immediate access to featurettes and galleries of interest.
* Strength and Honor: Creating The World of Gladiator: The definitive documentary on the origin, production and impact of the Oscar®-winning classic. The documentary includes an all-new Enhanced Viewing Mode allowing viewers access to additional interviews and behind-the-scenes material.
* The Making of Gladiator: HBO First Look special.
* Gladiator Games: The Roman Bloodsport: Learning Channel special.
* Hans Zimmer: Scoring Gladiator: An exploration of the rousing soundtrack.
* My Gladiator Journal: Personal diary of the young actor who played Lucius.
* Image & Design: Featurettes and galleries covering the production design, storyboards, costumes and more.
* Abandoned Sequences & Deleted Scenes
* VFX Explorations: Germania & Rome: Shot deconstruction with the visual effects artists.

BRAVEHEART

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

The film will be presented in 1080p High Definition with English 5.1 Dolby TrueHD, French 5.1 Dolby Digital and Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital and English, English SDH, French and Spanish subtitles.

Among the more than two hours of new special features to be included on Braveheart are:

* Interactive Timelines: Three distinct timelines featuring a combination of video, images, text and audio that can be accessed linearly or randomly.
* Production: A comprehensive chronology of the motion picture from conception through theatrical release, from a behind-the-scenes point of view.
* Historical: Chronological modules feature Scotland's greatest patriot, along with historical places, figures and events surrounding his life and struggle.
* Fiction: A comprehensive timeline identifying the chronological events of the film.
* Braveheart: A Look Back: Features new interviews with members of the cast and crew reminiscing about their experiences making the film and its enduring impact on cinema.
* Smithfield: Medieval Killing Fields: Relates the remarkable history of Smithfield, which for centuries was regularly filled with the roars of crowds, regal fanfares and rowdy games. Smithfield is also known as the site of William Wallace's execution, along with other terrifying spectacles when heretics, rebels and criminals were put to death.
* Battlefields of the Scottish Rebellion: Two major Scottish battlefields, Falkirk and Bannockburn, will be presented as 3D models that can be explored for further investigation into the military strategies and timetables employed in each. Topography, weapons, troop movements, and leadership data can also be accessed. An alternate playing mode will allow the story of each battle to unfold in an "automated" fashion, much like the interactive dioramas displayed at historical site museums around the world.

Pre-order: Amazon.com

November 3, 2009:

FORREST GUMP

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2009, 'Forrest Gump' will feature new material including a brand new roundtable discussion. More details will follow later in the year.

Actually, I did not enjoy the PQ of this movie because of the excessive DNR. The faces of the actors were waxy and the DNR was inconsistent. It was even clear on a 42in, very sure it will be apparent on a bigger screen.

The movie was great but the DNR was unnecessary.

Ok, bro... that's fair enough. Will probably buy once price drop really low because there's no extra feature to die for (Warner don't seem to bother to put anything here...). At least overall much better upgrade than my old flipper disc dvd. But still couldn't understand why the need to put like 17 different subtitles in here...!!??! tongue.gif

It means if your TV can't accept 1080p, the movie will show nothing.
Same as the Japanese version.

Yup, the Jap version can only be viewed on displays that accept 1080p signals. No such issues with the US version.

Set your receiver to output whatever resolution your TV supports, don't put auto. The receiver should downconvert the 1080p source to your TV's resolution.

Are there any other shipment methods from Amazon besides the "standard" & "expedited" ? Other than the Priority courier, do they have "registered" services? I don't mind paying a bit more to get the packages registered. The building I work at has so many "thieves" that its almost a guaranteed loss if the packages are not registered.

Hi,

I believe if u use expediated - then u nid a signature to collect de package..

Amazon has great CS n if indeed u dont recieve ur package - n after a standard period, u can request a 2nd shipment n they'll entertain this for free..

Why de hangups abt non delivery.. Like I said amz.com has great CS.. they literally guarantee receipts of item/s tat u order..

I hv nvr gone for other than de standard shippin (in my 2 odd yrs of buyin from them) n even thou' there was one or 2 instances where my packges arrived late (veri late, sumtin like 2.5mths late - to the extent that I got another for free), they did reach my hands eventually..

If there is anythin to complain abt amz is tat their shippin charges are a tad exp..
Other than tat, they are an exemplary online store

Use vpost. google for vpost malaysia. this is what my colleague do

1) register for amazon prime trail (free for 30 days)
2) with your amazon prime enabled, you ship to vpost address in USA - FOR FREE!
3) then vpost USA will ship back to malaysia for you and deliver to your doorstep.

He once ship a box around 10 titles, the shipping fee only around RM100++. thumbup.gif Average RM10 per bd. Just pray kettam never stop your package if you order too much.

Never tried expedited shipping, but I thought it still needs signature (with local pos), the difference is that it takes just almost as long as standard shipping to arrive.

Even without Amazon Prime account, still can get free standard US delivery which takes about 5 days. But I think the minimum purchase is US$30.

And yes, Amazon's CS is the best on this planet. thumbup.gif

I agree ... once I have problems and Amazon called me up on my mobile and when they couldn't get me, they left a message. Very polite and apologetic for the problems - I just couldn't say anything bad about their efficiency. I can't help but benchmark Malaysian companies against them - Amazon wins by miles and miles.

Yeap, Amazon has the best customer service among online retailers that I know of. They never failed to reply my email later than a day!!

Talking about expedited shipping method, 2 of my replacement orders (lost in shipment) so far were delivered via this method. Another order was sent using this too (without having to pay the extra fee) because it was shipped almost 2 weeks after I made the order due to stock shortage nod.gif

The print on the box is incorrect. There are 2 audio tracks on this BD : (1) DTS-HD MA 5.1 and (2) PCM stereo. THe PQ and AQ on this one is top notch imho.

Oh, and the David Foster BD is also excellent. Great selection of songs and AQ is also brilliant.

Also, just watched Grease on BD just now. Very nostalgic lol. Can still remember all the lyrics and sing along to all the songs hahaha. I just realised NOW how "adult" the language really was. How young and thin they were back then too ..... (runs and looks in the mirror).

yep..i concur ....Buble's caught in the act has DTS-HD MA 5.1

as for Groban's Awake...havent really watched it....been watching Buble and Foster alternately...hehe

Botti in Boston is very good also that one has 7.1 and there's Steven Tyler singing C.Chaplin's Smile....which sounds kinda odd

Just bought Underworld Trilogy..
Watch part 1...PQ is OK...so many dark scenes..AQ recorded is louder than usual..
Dialog is clear and crisp..but when comes to shooting scenes...bass is just too loud and somehow not solid... doh.gif

I think it's the worst PCM 5.1 ever I have heard so far.. shakehead.gif

Mostly pop, easy listening/radio friendly songs. David Foster is one of the most celebrated record producer, musician, composer etc... from Canada. He has worked wif artists like Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Celine Dion, Chicago, EWF, Mariah Carey, Michael Bolton, Kenny G amongst others... He has won 15 Grammys & being nominated 44 times!! notworthy.gif

Yeah, L/R speakers, but if speakers placement correct (eg you are sitting in the sweet spot) sounds like it is in the middle.

Hope this helps

I never bought one b4, but I think both are in the market. For the "real" BD one (the more expensive than the D9 one), they took a 50GB movie & sardine-crammed into their 25GB disc.

The US case especially the "ELITE" brand memang brittle, always broke especially at the top & bottom of the spine (the side of the casing) when arrived fom Amazon mad.gif Malas to return to Amazon, a big hassle.... as long the disc is ok nod.gif But your collection oredi cacat a bit...

I have the T2 Skynet Edition. Yes, first it keeps looking for internet access, but after a few seconds it says " can't connect to Skynet" or something like that and then it goes to the main menu. Just make sure you disable your internet access, or else it will just keep trying to connect.

I think at end 2008 time, you already got 40-50 blu-rays before Bluray even won the format war (end 2008)..

u really is early adopter of this new format.. thumbup.gif

I have the T2 Skynet Edition. Yes, first it keeps looking for internet access, but after a few seconds it says " can't connect to Skynet" or something like that and then it goes to the main menu. Just make sure you disable your internet access, or else it will just keep trying to connect.

Actually even for Oppo it is not region free from the factory. However you can do a hardware hack to make it region free. Some shops like SLT will do the hack for u (extra charge of course) and you can buy the hacked Oppo from them. If you buy direct from Oppo it is not hacked.

Even for other BD players there are third parties out there who can do or sell the hardware hack.

Dats right, but then again you wouldn't want to buy direct from Oppo ie., it'll be from US... then there's other issue like 'stepping down' power and etc. to consider. In S'pore, most shop selling this Oppo model already being hacked, so no problemo... and the warranty still stand from the seller, at least. Just wish, if it will be sold here in M'sia too...

And yes, if only anyone can hacked PS3 to be region-free... is there such a service here? But actually I'm more concern with PS3 (or a BDp) to be DVD region-free rather than BD, since most of my BD purchases are from US [Region A] anyway. But when BD titles like HellBoy 2; where the 2nd disc is a DVD, I can't play 'em on my PS3... have to switch to my "non-upscaler" DVDp, which is a letdown.... doh.gif

____________________________________________________________

On the spending of BDs, I don't really set any restriction... it depends what titles being release or selling with good deal on that particular month. I can go 2 months without buying anything (dats because I have over abundance of titles on the previous months) hehe... tongue.gif

During DVD-buying days (in late 90s), I used to rush out and buy any new R1 releases available without price concern. But with BDs nowadays... I'm willing to wait even if its my favourite newly-released titles! I'll wait til the price goes down to a price margin I'm ok with. Cheapskate me, huh... blush.gif

I think the Oppo BDP is worldwide voltage compatible.

One way around this is to get an upscaling AVR then whatever source you plug in (DVD, Astro) can be upscaled.

Yeah, even without HDMI the AVR can upscale but maybe not up to 1080p. There will be some limitation like only up to 1080i or 720p. Read the manual and see.

It is because certain region more 'holy' so certain 'part' cut?
For me I always prefer US vision, if possible unrated extended director cut. tongue.gif

cinema release date could be one of the reason for studio A but not entirely true for studio B....

another possibility....so that suckers like some of us here will buy region A and B and C and all its different editions because there's a slight diff in each releases.

If that's the case, they should lock every single bd out there. Why some title are lock and some aren't.
*
Dats the thing... Fox is the main culprit, always locked their BD titles. At least for DVD, one locked, all locked!

I think the Oppo BDP is worldwide voltage compatible.
One way around this is to get an upscaling AVR then whatever source you plug in (DVD, Astro) can be upscaled.
*
I can confirm that the Oppo BDP is dual voltage. 100-240V.

So far only available in S'pore.  hmm.gif  Before, I've never heard of it, but it's a good American made...

It can be bought from SLT in Spore. It is actually manufactured in China....Its just that Oppo always concentrated on the design aspect and used the ABT VRS chip. It has very well designed audio and video circuitry.

Dats right, but then again you wouldn't want to buy direct from Oppo ie., it'll be from US... then there's other issue like 'stepping down' power and etc. to consider.
as others have posted, all Oppo players come with universal voltage adapter. so u can just plug and play irrespective of which country you're in.

the BDA has left it to the respective studios to decide if they want to lock or not.

For me, downloads only for previewing purpose of a new / obscure movies which are not shown in local cinemas and / or if not available as DVD in the Jack Sparrow market. For collection, I'd prefer hard-copy disc aka Blu-Ray.

With "real" HD movies in a physical form, I can see and hold its packaging, design etc. apart from the disc itself which truly deliver full HD PQ & AQ, period. And I can oso place them neatly on my shelf to show-off lar, hehe... biggrin.gif

I totally agree on that biggrin.gif

For me, I will only buy those worth for collection movies
The rest I'll rely on the 'understood' copies
coz I think no point to build up a big blu-ray library and later have to fork out money to build again when format beyond 1080p is out
just like what happened to DVD

anyway, it's just my way of enjoying HD nod.gif

Depending on where you are located, most can arrange for postal delivery too if COD is not an option. Here's one whom I have been buying from, reliable and friendly http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/723954

Watched Wall-E recently on BD. Really very good transfer. The details to attention by Pixar is unrivalled. The earth scenes were very well done and some very good LFE during the probe landing.

I would rate PQ to be on par with Ratatouille. SQ very good. I did not get DTSHDMA 6.1 on my Oppo but I believe the PS3 did show 6.1. Need to check this.

Bro, I didn't know you own an Oppo BDp. Is it region-free and any good overall... as compared to the other more "publicised"/known brand BDp out there? Thanks...

Fathil,

I gave my review in the BluRay player thread. It is now region free after I installed the hardware mod. It is an universal player and handles BD, DVD, DVD-A, SACD, HDCD and RedBox CD. That's its strength. As a BD player for PQ the differences between the different players (Panny, Sony, Pioneer) are minimal but there. SQ it bitstreams. DVD upscaling is very good as well. Check out the BD Player Thread.

Baraka is a love it or hate it documentary.

There are no commentaries, it is a series of pictures and videos. The shots are breathtaking. It is a reflection of the world. Very graphic reflection of the world.

I enjoyed it a lot.

Knowing won't be opened yet, not in this coming weeks at least unless I got time. Baraka is amazing, 5 stars for both the content and PA/AQ. But some scenes are too graphic, like the cremation by the river in India, might scare your kids.

About the DTS-HD MA 6.1/71 showing 5.1, it's a common issue with the codec. Technically there are different ways of players/receivers to decode, this "confusion" by the decoder is what makes the back surround channel(s) to be downmixed into the left & right surround channels and you'll only get 5.1. I've posted the channel positioning diagrams before, that shows how it works.

There are a few discs that was fine though because of the way it was encoded, but can't remember which. This issue was first discovered when PS3 was given DTS-HD MA decoding capability via a firmware update last year. Same problem, but after one of the next few firmware updates this problem was solved.

In the case of PS3, it was relatively easy to fix because it uses only software to decode. But most players or AV receivers use hardware, a dedicated chip to do the decoding. I'm not sure is this issue in the hardware decoding players/receivers can fixed by firmware or not. Maybe it can, if there is a firmware update.

How come BD only 1080i? Not all 1080p meh?
*
the recordings were from 1080i HD cameras I think.. that;'s what it was meant..

if could be 1080p on BD but taken from 1080i source..

difference is probably guesstimate, 10-20% loss in video data (but may not even be noticable to the eyes) if comparing fast moving video or camera pans..

for still/non moving video, then 1080i can be upconverted to 1080p with very minimal loss if all the inter frame flags are tagged correctly..

since UK case is thicker, will the paper sleeve be affected when you use the thinner US case with the UK paper sleeve?

i did try the paper insert from the UK case to the US slimmer ones...actually there are several thickness of the US ones.....they fit in OK...they left quite some room to fit those.

as for the DVDs....they're sold off....at least most of them.

yeah Weeds is a good series...season 4 packed with even more nudity.

Troy: Director's Cut is one of my first BD titles to own and thus far has one of the best PQ transfer that I've ever seen on a "non-new movie" BD title. Truly recommended...... and because of Ms Kruger's "twin peaks" too drool.gif

Anyone seen the 3D version of Ice Age 3 in cinemas? Does it use the same technology as the Journey to the Center of the Earth BD?

Wanna bring my kid to see it this afternoon, if it's the same 3D technology, then I'll just choose the normal one.

Ice Age 3 uses Real D 3-D technology; the same used for Journey To The Centre..., My Bloody Valentine, Monsters & Aliens, Bolt and Up... with the last two using Disney Digital 3-D, Disney's equivalent of the Real D 3-D technology... nod.gif

...though I've never watched any 3-D movies/CGI animations in M'sian cinemas yet... blush.gif

Yup needs 3D glasses. Dizziness depends on the movie and the scene. The attraction of 3D is how objects pop right in front of your face.

Lady Kimi, it would not be those that we experienced in themepark. The color is weird (off-color) and not truly 3D as it needs two projectors to do it. Complicated yet expensive.

The Tudors, another series from Showtime (as is Weeds) is also very good, comes with DTS audio. Showtime doesn't censor much, or at all as far as pay tv is concerned, so I guess it's viewer discretion kinda shows.

get David's Foster concert, its amazing, i mean the recording, my really 1st experience,

you can't hear the the audience clapping or cheering in front the screen or what i meant is from the center and front speakers, its as though you are sitting with the audience as the clapping is from there only.really fantastic recording mastering

Troy: Director's Cut is one of my first BD titles to own and thus far has one of the best PQ transfer that I've ever seen on a "non-new movie" BD title. Truly recommended...... and because of Ms Kruger's "twin peaks" too  drool.gif

I have to admit Kruger's ( .Y. ) is really beautiful. blush.gif

I got try out BOB BD already. Story very good. smile.gif PQ a bit grainy, AQ very nice. biggrin.gif

As for 3D BD I only got 'Journey to the center of the earth'...........Very good 3D effect. But u must watch it in the dark. A bit 'dizzy' at first but once ur eye get 'adjusted' u will like it! rclxms.gif rclxms.gif
He! He! This is the one of the BD I use to demo to my gust! After watching 3D BD all the 'Oh! Oh! & Ah! Ah!' Feel very syok! rclxms.gif rclxms.gif .........All say it is worth it after spending so much on my HT!

OH btw I test out watching 3D BD on Plasma 50" FHD & also 42" LCD FHD both effect very good. The 3D effect might not be that good on HD ready TV.

Somewhere at the beginning of the movie when both of them are still in Greece. The big bro is downstairs drinking wine while his litter bro is upstairs doing his 'business' that is when I saw the two very nice 'nen nen'!
Aiyoh I think I better buy the BD vision so can see 'nen nen' in 1080P tongue.gif
