Hi All, anyone does experience in installing kitchen cabinet for his/her new home?

These days I have met a few kitchen cabinet makers and getting a bit confuse about the materials they are using for my cabinet's door.

Common and economical material being used is ABS melamine board type.

However, there are some makers called this as Chipboard as well.

They claimed ABS melamine actually is Chipboard which I am not sure whether it is correct.

My understanding is that Chip Board is a kind of compressed of fibre wood materials that is even worse than Melamine board.

Anyone know the differences between these 2 materials?

Thanks.

abs melamine is basically laminted chipboard. previously the quality of the lamination was not very good in terms of water proofing etc. such that the chipboard will expand if the cabinet becomes wet, hot etc. and this will result in cracking on the cabinet door. however now, the quality of the lamination has improved tremendously, and i see the cabinets lasting much longer.

however, one problem is the strength of the cabinet in terms of holding screws. which will tend to become loose after a while.

solid wood is always the longest lasting.

Ya, normally those colour like red or green is request by young couple.
Black n white is the perfect match, but majority colour must be white, then black will be like secondary colour.
If u use black for whole cabinet, it look dark. uncless mix with aluminium or mirror. drool.gif

Is very difficult to tell 1 by 1 here, or I show 1 of his quotation to u as reference,

user posted image]

Like the cabinet shown above,

Granite for table surface, around rm190 pfr. (factory price)
If u order your cabinet from showroom, normally they charge rm260 pfr.

The price always depend on the design, material and accessories as well.

For those who wan to meet their budget, the price still can adjust due to different kind of materials.

Ovens nowdays usually dissipates heat thru the front and back iianm. In any case, the back portion of the oven is also usually hollow, so there's room to breathe.

The vertical drawer is fit with bottle basket.
Designed to put some bottles like tomato source, cooking oil...etc

Very practical design. smile.gif

IMO, the design is practical if you have another basket to but the bottles or the whole row of drawer is completed occupied by bottles.
Imagine if only got 2-3 bottles, when the drawer moving in and out, for sure the thin-shaped bottle will collapse.

This drawer is quite heavy, especially 3G door or nyatoh door. When u pull out, it move slow and smooth. This is for those like to seperate their things into categories.
As what I see normally cabinet is always full with a lot of things. So far never heard people complaint about this. sweat.gif

There is steel basket together with the drawer, so no need to put another basket.
Or another way is use swing door but fix the bottle basket inside cabinet.

I had PM u. Thanks!

Some peoples PM me and asked about the different between granite and solid surface.

Granite Counters
Granite is the countertop material of choice and it becomes more widespread nowadays. The beauty of the stone contributes to the beauty of even the most modest kitchen.

Pros: holds up to heat; comes in a range of almost 3000 colors; looks permanent and substantial; will last a lifetime; new sealers are almost maintenance-free; 2nd highest hardness rating after diamonds; has a high value to home buyers.

Cons: expensive, but becoming more affordable; requires some maintenance; some stones absorbs stains if not sealed; knives can become dull if you cut on it; can crack if stressed or improperly installed.

Solid Surface
Because solid surface counters are just what they're called, solid, any scratches can be sanded out. The countertops are custom-made based on the shape required.

Pros: comes in many colors and patterns; seamless; stain resistant.

Cons: vulnerable to hot pans and stains which can damage the surface; can be moderately expensive.

The price direct from factory is not much different with solid surface. So my brother always advice people to choose granite, it's easier to take care.

Hope this info can help u to make a choice. biggrin.gif

Welcome, but make sure u ask your contractor to quote a final price for u.
Some contractor they offer very cheap price in prf, when come to final total amount you have to pay, they add this and that.
Finally ur price is much more higher.

Contractor's attitube is very important. smile.gif

Just wish to clarify the above, that is just price per sq ft for the granite countertop right? Excluding any cabinets? Edit: in one of your posts above you said granite price was RM170 pfr. Here you said it is psf. So, is it pfr or psf?

The price applies to all kinds of granite or is this an average price?

pfr = per foot run. In other words, cost is measured by the length, not length x width.

pfr = per foot run. In other words, cost is measured by the length, not length x width.
*
QUOTE(RaptoR @ Jun 9 2009, 05:04 PM)
1 foot run would be 300mm (length) by 600mm (depth of the countertop)

Hi Erny. Thanks and appreciate the useful information you provided. This will give some hints regarding the price I would expect my future kitchen to be.

Btw do you know the price does the cabinet price include the hinge/soft rest etc or that's on separate quote? Thx!!!

Ya, pfr means calculate by 1 ft run.
For example, if the cabinet 5 ft length and it cost rm100 pfr, ----> rm100 x 5 = rm500

In the other hand, if calculate in psf, it means 1ft x 1ft = 1 fts.
For example, if the cabinet 5 ft length and 2 ft width and it cost rm40 psf, --------->rm 40 x (5x2) = rm400

Have a nice day~ smile.gif

Ya, pfr means calculate by 1 meter run.
For example, if the cabinet 5 meters length and it cost rm100 pfr, ----> rm100 x 5 = rm500

In the other hand, if calculate in psf, it means 1ft x 1ft = 1 fts.
For example, if the cabinet 5 meters length and 2 meters width and it cost rm40 psf, --------->rm 40 x (5x2) = rm400
That's quite confusing isn't it? rclxub.gif Why calculate pfr by 1 meter run? In that case you should call it pmr = per meter run. This is the 1st time I hear that pfr is calculated by 1 meter run.

Your second line about psf also confusing. First u say "if calculate in psf, it means 1ft x 1ft = 1 fts". Then in your example you use meters. There's a big difference u know?

u can choose to put the stripe in horizontal or vertical way.
When u put it in horizontal, u can feel your cabinet look wider and modern.
when u put it in vertical, u can feel your cabinet look taller and classic.

Ya, I think ppl start using this in interior design since few years ago, but there are many kinds of this small tiles. The design for this small tiles are keep changing. (This is not the small tiles we found in kopitiam toilet brows.gif )

Actually this is very practical way since it is easier to clean up compare to painted wall.
Many ppl prefer to mix this small tiles with 1x2 tiles.

Those small tiles are called mosaic tiles I believe.

Anyway, I have been told that using those mosaic tiles for the wall behind the cooking hob will cause more work with cleaning and maintenance. This is because with Asian cooking there is a lot of oil being vaporised and flying about. Yes you have the hood to absorb most of the oil, but some will still stick to the wall. Because those mosaic tiles have a lot of groove lines the oil is harder to remove and you need more time and care in wiping. Just something to bear in mind.

Painted wall maintenance depends on the paint type. The cheaper type may be a bit porous so some oil penetrates the paint and cannot be wiped off. Or if you wipe too often the paint will peel. If you use high quality paint it might be better.

Better is to use larger tiles then less groove lines. I've also seen some people use a single sheet of stainless steel or single piece of coloured glass - then wiping is very easy - but it depends if you like the look.

Hi, I am looking around for good kitchen cabinet designer. Signature Kitchen came highly recommended by my architect but I also do hear many sad experiences with them.

So far, I am looking at Kitchen Haus from TTDI, Kian Classic, Lifestyle Kitchen from TTDI and also Kitchen Palace at Dataran Sunway.

Would appreciate any feedbacks or experiences one had with one of those above.

That is total price, just pay 1k and the mosaic will be on your wall.
For the small mosaic, 1ft x 1ft i think around rm18-20..plus the tiling work fee..So total need 1k for 10ft x 2.5ft.
Erm....for 10 inch x 8 inch, how much per piece i don't know, never ask before. But cheaper and easier to install. That's why the total price is cheaper. Like Jchong said:"bigger tile, less groove line, easier to clean" brows.gif

So, total price for mosaic tiles is 1k for 25 ft2. That means RM40 psf. If the mosaic tiles themselves are RM20 psf, means the tiling workmanship is RM20 psf. I think that's very high for the workmanship!

Many people plan to choose tiles for their countertop, but most people do not realize that concrete is porous. In fact, more porous than Swiss cheese! The pores constitute 12 to 18% of the concrete but the pores are invisible, much smaller that human hair. After concrete is poured, almost a half of the water has to evaporate. As this surplus water pushes to the surface, it leaves behind a network of capillaries (pores) inside the concrete.

The pores are much larger than water molecules. Water vapor or gases flow easily right through, drawn in by the lower pressure inside buildings. But liquid water is initially held back by its surface tension, as the glob of water gets stuck inside the microscopic dry pore. However, as water enlarges the pores or they get wet by condensation, water starts seeping in. And eventually, the pores start actively pulling in water by capillary action.

Concrete blocks, particularly cinder blocks, are more permeable to water vapor than poured concrete. They all start as impermeable to liquid water but, when exposed to water, their porosity increases and they start seeping water.

2 to 3 years later, if you are using 2x2 tiles, the problem above may occur.
You can choose smaller tiles to avoid this problem. Anyway, granite still will be the best choice for now.

Not only water seeping... its also potential kitchen biohazard! Its a perfect breeding ground for dangerous and harmful bacteria!

Actually Erny, wouldn't granite top have the same issues although not as bad as concrete. Most granite have tiny microscopic holes as well.

BTW, I sent my floor plan to your brother on Monday.. today no sound yet... maybe lots of business. Can you chase him up please? I follow up with him on Wed if he have gotten my mail....

*
Concrete has porous becoz the water in there evapurate after sometime, therefore porous forming inside the concrete. This make the concrete become weaker and weaker. The problem is your tiles will start losing the bonding within the concrete.

Granite consist porous but this is the natural product, all kind of stones absorb water but not really fast. For example, u put a few drops of water on it, then come back later and wipe the area. If the area is darker then the rest of your granite it means that it has adsorbed some of the water rendering it porous. But even granite consist porous within it, but u will have no problem with this porous because normally people using water to clean it and immediately dry it up. Unless u pour black oil on white granite and leave it for few hours, then u are in problem.. brows.gif

Ok bro, I will remind him. sorry to keep u waiting. sweat.gif

U mean u cause the circle on tile and it can't be removed? Are u put the glass there for few years? brows.gif
I think it will not have any effect on this, it is a hard nature stone.
Even u pour a glass of water on tile or granite, but u clean it in few minutes, it will not have any issue. smile.gif

it's indeed a circle permanently on the tiles, definately not for few years.
on other tiles, sometimes, the circle appears for a few minutes than gone.

Just to share some info with u all,

Price direct from factory,
Granite 1ft x 1ft = rm170
Hi Erny,

I happened to visit a granite factory and saw that their prices are much lower than what you posted. Example: the popular black galaxy is about RM45 psf. Of course this doesn't include the bullnosing or edge polishing or opening hole for the sink/hob - but these are not too expensive. Your figure of RM170 psf seems too high.

Bro,

Not rm170 psf, is rm170 pfr ..so equal to rm85 psf. (I think i misundertood what my brother told me last time, did I tell u psf or pfr?)
Cabinet factory need to manufacture the granite like polish, make hole, edge finishing, and transport, install....
rm85 psf.

Granite factory offer rm45 psf...very easy, just cut the size u wan. How much do u think u need to employ ppl to do manufacture the granite like polish, make hole, edge finishing, and transport, install....

U should compare the price within cabinet factory or showroom. then u wil know the final price.

If later someone ask me granite at mountain there is free of charge, why cabinet factory sell rm85 psf..then I really don't know how to answer. Haha! rclxub.gif (just kidding, don't angry~ sweat.gif )

Anyway, have a nice day!

I also asked about this and RM20 psf tiling workmanship, even for Chinese, is high.

Looks like your brother is making good profit margin. tongue.gif

The price you mentioned was for 1 ft x 1ft, so it's psf. If you now say it is pfr then better la smile.gif

The RM45 I mentioned is already polished. The extra labour for edge finishing and making hole is not much more. Transport and install... depends on how much you're making some places will deliver and install FOC.

The reason I'm comparing to your price of RM170 is because you said this is "Price direct from factory". I know price from showroom is even higher because have to add their profit margin also.

I have also had my house renovated before and during that time did my research on suppliers and prices. Since you are advertising your brother's ID services here (good idea) I just wanted the forummers to be more informed about the prices. I think all forummers want to be sure they are getting good prices.

I know your brother is not a tiling man. He is the ID and he will co-ordinate the work and sub-contract out to specialised trades like tiling, electrician, carpentry, etc. He will pay the tiler one rate and charge the customer another rate. Again this is normal and that's how he earns his profit margin. Just wanna ensure he charges fairly that's all.

I think 10" x 8" wall tiles only RM1+ something per pc (for the plain color, normal grade). Those with special designs or colour will cost more.

But I suggest taking bigger so there are fewer groove lines. You can check with the various tile manufacturers like Kimgres, MML, Whitehorse, Guocera, etc.

I think the brand is Kimgres. Like I said this is for plain colour (generally white, beige), normal grade. This is the basic tile.

Can't imagine Kimgress tile is so cheap, although it is basic but still consider cheap

By the way, Jchong, can you PM me the contact number of the granite factory?

Thanks

The place is called Kampung Melayu Subang. U can check it out on Google Maps. But yes in Sg Buloh also got 1 or 2 places. I visited 3-4 different places (many of them by the road side) but I don't have their tel numbers any more.

As for the Kimgres tile, I'll check on the price I paid for them later. My documents are in the office.

Update: checked on the tiles price, Kimgres code A82S020 (200x300mm or about 8"x12"). Price each is RM1.30. But I recall this was special price during stock clearance.

I'm also looking for kitchen cabinet contractors.
Received 2 quotes fm contractor so far but looking for more before finalising.
However for my wet kitchen, I plan to do glass instead of melamine as I dont like the melamine feels.
Is this the right choice?

hi bro, very interested in your findings. for erny's granite top of rm170 pfr, for 9 ft it will cost rm1530. To be frank, I could not find any granite pricing close to this figure, although i admit i did not look at factories, i only check at ID / kitchen specialists... so I always thought the price was good.

I tried to search for Kampung Melayu Subang, but without proper description it is quite hard to look for the granite factory you mentioned. any clue? smile.gif

btw since you mentioned you did reno your place before, mind to share the material and cost of your kitchen top? of coz, also to share the place you did it, you see i am looking for kitchen tops now for my place.

Thanks bro. smile.gif

My kitchen top is like this:

Attached Image

I checked back my records. Depth is 600mm (standard) with 3" backsplash and the front is double SE profile (also quite standard). Black Galaxy granite. Plus one opening for the hob. Total length is 9.8 ft and cost was RM1449. So nearly RM148 pfr all in. I got it from a factory in Ipoh (through family friend).

After talking to a few people they said the price quoted by Erny @ 170 pfr is quite reasonable by KL standards. If you approach those kitchen design shops outside would be more expensive (as you've already found out). Do you know if Erny's price includes the backsplash? Also check on what type of granite is being offered. Most people go for black colour - you have Black Galaxy (black with copper flecks) or Shanxi Black (this is more pure black). Shanxi Black is a little bit cheaper I think.

Also, there is advantage in dealing with just one party to tapau the cabinets and tops - they will do all coordination in the background and you liaise with 1 person only and 1 person is responsible for the works. If you split the cabinets and tops to 2 different suppliers, in the event something goes wrong then a lot of finger pointing will happen.

In case you want to look at Kampung Melayu Subang, map is below. Those granite places are along the main road (yellow) after the Subang Airport.

Attached Image

A few other thoughts I can share:

* I feel that granite can last longer than solid surfaces (Corian, LG Hi-Macs, etc)
* Granite looks better in my opinion. Nowadays solid surfaces also have more 'natural stone look' versions but significantly more expensive
* If you like plain colours (like solid white) then solid surfaces will have the look you want
* For solid surfaces they can polish the seams so it looks seamless (important if you have L-shape tops). For granite you will see faint groove line where the L joins. If your top is straight across then no problem.

thanks for the picture and information and also the comments, sure is helpful to me and any other people looking for tops smile.gif
yea I also agree on one contractor to ta pau everything - saves time and effort. but end result will be depending on the contractor (the very important decision to engage who)

I will post again with my findings or once I got my own confirmed quotations from my contractor smile.gif

Love the 3G door very much. It is suitable to have it with tiles top and how much it is cost (the 3G door in psf)?

The black galaxy granite's top is also lovely..it is any difference with the usual granite (in terms of quality and price)?

To Erny, could you please pm me the quotation for this KC..TQ very much :-)

My concern with the 3G or the glass panel on the wall, will it over time have oil or moisture seep in and ruin the beauty of the shining glass?

BTW, your bro factory moving done? Show room ready for visit?

Hi erny could u pm me ur contact and details.
I think i have big problem with my kitchen.
I did solid surface w/o cabinet. But now the tiles seem coming out. I wonder how can you fix it? I too wanted to do base cabinet with drawer.
I interested on the tv cabinet and also the stair case under space cabinet. Maybe you could provide me more details.

Erny

My concern with the 3G or the glass panel on the wall, will it over time have oil or moisture seep in and ruin the beauty of the shining glass?

BTW, your bro factory moving done? Show room ready for visit?
*
That glass u can direct buy in kitchen hardware shop, it don't need to be custome made. It's always have a standard size which fit to your hood and hob.

Ya, his factory is working day and night now, hehe! showroom and office is just right above the factory, but the cabinets haven't complete all. (No time to do it yet)
Another thing is I'll invest with my bro and open a showroom in kajang soon. Hopefully will open in Okt. smile.gif

A bit lost about the glass buy direct from kitchen hardware shop...I'm not refering where to buy replacement but how its aging and longevity of the 3G seal if water/moist/oil/etc seep inside the 3G panel and also that big glass panel that mount on the wall between hanging unit and counter.

I just got the quotation from KianClassic Design for the Dry Kitchen:

U-shaped (6.5' x 12' x 9.5') all with High-Gloss coloured aluminium side cover board (built-in handle):

Top: RM 3,267
Botton: RM 3,712
Drawer: RM 300
Tall Unit Oven: RM 700
Tall Unit: RM 700
Solid Surface: RM 1,980

Total: RM 10,655

Is it reasonable? Anyone heard of KianClassic?

So, total price for mosaic tiles is 1k for 25 ft2. That means RM40 psf. If the mosaic tiles themselves are RM20 psf, means the tiling workmanship is RM20 psf. I think that's very high for the workmanship!
*
1) The small mosaic for 1ft x 1ft is ranging from RM18 to RM25 (those diamond bling-bling one is very expensive...)

2) As for the similar design with tiles size 10' x 13' is about RM 2.50 to RM 3.00 per piece.

So 1K for 2.5ft x 10ft mosaic is reasonable....as for tile design should be below RM500 b'cos the tile is very cheap...

Hi there, as I have posted here (Mediterranean style cabinet), what kind of price range are we looking here?

I still finalised the size of the cabinet as yet.

If it were to use wood for the door, what would the price be as compared to membrane pressed ones?

Thanks.

Ya, I think it is kind of too dark and too plain so try to see if other mosaic colors match or not.

Having any black monolithic object in the house sucks in the light, and makes it look significantly darker.
My house used to be much brighter before the bare concrete counter went up. The colour should lighten up as the concrete cures. But in anticipation of this, i've prepared plenty of lights.

The current scene's up on the blog.

Can you PM the price of that kitchen cabinet? That is about my size but I want to use black granite. My size is 15ft by 12ft. The only thing I dont need so many hanging top cabinet and I only want it to be half height size and no dish rack needed.

I have a wet kitchen as well which is 10ft by 5ft. Only need concrete top for the wet kitchen top and bottom cabinet. Design will be same as dry kitchen.

Does your brother do the plywood with formica finishing or only melamine with glass?

Normally see concrete top with tiles, and granite/solid surface for wood-based top.

Does it make sense to hv kitchen concrete top with granite or solid surface?

Yes. I have one concrete top with compressed marble, not exactly granite but close. Use it for wet area like kitchen sink.

Erny if I am doing concrete slab/top, what is the process like ?
I ask my contractor to do the top first and give your the measurement ??
Or you give the measurement and I pass it to my contractor to do ....

It is one pc like granite, max 3ft x 8ft polished size. price is comparable to mid-range granite such as black galaxy.

Is very difficult to tell 1 by 1 here, or I show 1 of his quotation to u as reference,

user posted image]

Like the cabinet shown above,

Granite for table surface, around rm170 pfr. (factory price)
If u order your cabinet from showroom, normally they charge rm210 pfr.

This L-shape green cabinet at below is 8ft x 6ft, top cabinet is 8ft.
Full set cabinet use 3G door + everthing included the dish rak..
the price is around rm7400..

For those who wan to meet their budget, the price still can adjust due to different kind of materials.

Hope this information can be ur reference and giv u all some ideas..  nod.gif

Its RM190/ftr. Granite is not local definitely. Either china or india, but is matter?
In Malaysia i dont think we have dark granite beside the normal white one and pink (quite limited).

If my current kitchen has an old cabinet (cement with tiles kind) as shown below, is it even possible to 'convert without hacking' it to the one above or hacking is necessary?

Dear Erny,
I've just came across this websites and really like the kitchen cabinets that you've posted.

do you put a concrete base with solid surface? or concrete base only goes with tiles?

could you advise on the estimated costs for the kitchen cabinets if the top is
a) melamine (L shaped dry kitchen - measurement 3ft (base only) + 11ft (base & top))

b) solid surface (for dry kitchen only - measurement as above)

c) concrete base + tiles (and if you do the concrete base or I have to source a contractor separately and you only do kitchen cabinets)
and which is the best choice (but i'll be using the dry kitchen to wash dishes.. eg would the water cause the melamine top to spoil? or should i do a concrete top with tiles.)

for wet kitchen (measurement 6 ft + 2 ft - L shaped) and dry kitchen

d) granite - dry kitchen or is wet kitchen advisable?

i heard that for wet kitchen, instead of melamine board cabinet, you could combine with err.. is it glass?

thanks for bearing with my many questions as i'm really new to this.

Unless u pour black oil on white granite and leave it for few hours, then u are in problem..  brows.gif

Ok bro, I will remind him. sorry to keep u waiting.  sweat.gif
Have a nice day!

Hi,
Kindly enlighten me.

Does this mean that 2x2 tiles + concrete base is not recommended as the tiles would become loose? averagely, how long will it take for the tiles to be loose?

how much is the price differentiation pfr for concrete + tiles and granite?
thanks!

Pls find replies as below,

do you put a concrete base with solid surface? or concrete base only goes with tiles?
Yes, we did before, but the table will become too thick and it dose not look nice. actually you don't need the concrete table to support the solid surface but the cabinet itself will do.

could you advise on the estimated costs for the kitchen cabinets if the top is
a) melamine (L shaped dry kitchen - measurement 3ft (base only) + 11ft (base & top)
Actually the price always depend on design, materials and also accessories, so I can't quote for you before I discuss with you about all that things.

b) solid surface (for dry kitchen only - measurement as above)
Solid surface it cost RM160 pfr and granite RM190 pfr.

c) concrete base + tiles (and if you do the concrete base or I have to source a contractor separately and you only do kitchen cabinets)
and which is the best choice (but i'll be using the dry kitchen to wash dishes.. eg would the water cause the melamine top to spoil? or should i do a concrete top with tiles.)
If you can find cheaper price, of course I'll advise you to take the cheaper quotation. Actually it depend on how you take care of it. I believe most of the owners will not choose steel to do their cabinet just because they worry about this problem. Just like you will not change all your glass windows to steel just because you worry you may break it.

for wet kitchen (measurement 6 ft + 2 ft - L shaped) and dry kitchen
d) granite - dry kitchen or is wet kitchen advisable?
Sure, granite is natural stone and it is very long lasting material.

i heard that for wet kitchen, instead of melamine board cabinet, you could combine with err.. is it glass?
Yes, that is 3G glass door.

It will become loose in few years.. depand on what you work on the table. if the daily work on it is heavy work, the tiles may drop out. When you knock on the tiles, you can hear the sound is different, it is empty below the tiles. Unless you choose 1x1 tiles.

anybody who can assist to quote for the following:
1. kitchen
2. wardrobe
3. plaster ceiling
4. installation of AC, heaters, lightings, ceiling fans, etc
5. grilles
6. painting
7. curtain railings

i got a fren who just collected keys last weekend. total approx 300+ units in the development. it's a condominium project and i reckon there'll be quite substantial people renovating farely soon as the area is quite 'hot' and renting out to students is quite norm.
would like to cut some sort of deal with contractors in terms of the contractor providing the services for the above works and in return, can have exclusive advertisement rights ala showhouse to show all owners in the development of the product (samples + mock-up). in other words, the contractor finish the renovations ASAP, then can start marketing and hunting potential clients from the unit itself.
i come to know similiar deals in other developments before.
the deal is usually letting contractor take the unit for about 6 months and in return either free renovation or hugely discounted cost to the owner. would appreciate responses ASAP.
the last time i heard about such deals, the contractor told me himself he practically got 1 free unit from the profit itself. but that was 10 years ago in my property which consists of more than 1000 units!!!
thanks.

Even your wet kitchen is small, you still can have a nice design for it.
white suface top is very suitable for small kithcen.
dark colour for base cabinet ensure there is great contrast with white table.
For wall cabinet, you can mix with frosted glass to create a mordern design for your kitchen.

hi.......nice pictures shared here..thanks to those sharing..at least it gives me an idea on what i might like biggrin.gif

1) just wanna get some advice......normally the kitchen cabinet is build before we move in or after? any pro n cons..reason is im planning to buy a house maybe by end of the year, but i dont see any budget(even 8-10k,fuuh) for the kitchen cabinet yet, so would be trouble later along the road, when ive already occupied the house, then the people come to do reno's? how much time does it normally take? hmm.gif

2) is there any such thing as a kitchen kabinet that is flexy to stand reno/extention of the kitchen? sorry if i confuse u guys.....its like this.....example current kitchen is 10*12.........then i make kitcten cabinet at one corner...in a few years i reno/bigger my kitchen, would it be possible to reuse my kitchen cabinet that ive already made earlier? whats the term used? hmm.gif

3) if u mop ur house often, how to handle when it comes to kitchen cabinet/below part? ive seen my friends house and saw his kitchen cabinet/below a bit spoiled due to expose to water i guess........

just wondering biggrin.gif

Can you quote me 3 types of kitchen cabinets below for top and bottom. I only need 7 ft straight for both top and bottom. Also can you quote extra return table for another 6ft.

What material will be more cost effective?

Thanks

1) Heat Resistant
a. Lighted cigarette placed on surface of test sample.
-Stain easilt removed by wet cloth.

b. Sample placed in oven and baked at 70°C for 24 hours.
- No hairline cracks observed using a 6x magnifying glass.

c. Aluminum container containing oil superheated to 180°C place on sample for 20 minutes.
- No marks or any changes observed.

2. Abrasion Resistant
a. Taber abraser applied at 500 gram on to sample.
- Insignificant abrasion of surface sample.

3. Steam Resistant
a. Test sample placed on top of a beaker of boiling water.
- No fault observed

4. Chemical or stain resistant
Surface of test sample exposed to various chemicals and stain; alkali alcohol, petroleum products, coffee, aminol oil, vegetable oil/sauce, soap/detergent, tea, vinegar, sugar, ink, lip stick, nail-polish, milk/ milk product, ammonium chloride, shoe-polish.
- no fault or stain observed on sample in all cases.

I would suggest using tiles...it's actually much much easier to clean compared to stainless steel. but if light cooking can use the steel...more appealing?

The price is cheap compare to solid surface, concrete or granite.
It is heat resistance and anti-scratch.

But if this table always in wet condition and the owner never take good care of it....then is time to prepare and change the table top. haha!

Ya, tiles 1x2 is good choice. Choose those smooth surface and it will be much more easy to clean it.
If you plan to have filter in future, fix the water tap on the table. When your water tap fixed on table, in case it is leaking, and you still can fix that. If from wall, you have to hack the tiles and do the repair work.

But if come from wall, it will be more strong and it will not loose easily. Perhaps you will have more space under the sink.

If you can afford it, granite top is the best, being stain, scratch, heat resistant. I had mine done for the cabinet top and wall cladding. To give u an idea how durable it is, it took me 45mins and 4 tungsten carbide drills to drill through 2 screw holes.

Those are nice cabinets! I'm interested in the corner computer/table with bench that you posted but prefer to have the apple green finish in the desk/table with matching orange as cabinet doors.

If there any guided on what need to prepare when we planning to install the cabinet ? Like

Granite is non-porous. Marble is. I have granite top and cladding for my kitchen and I feel it is the material to use for kitchen top, being stain, heat and scratch proof! If you have big enough budget, go for synthetic granite sink, eg Silgranit by Blanco.

Of course! Only sedimentary rocks have porosity.

Ya, as I know, granite is the hardest rock in the world after diamond. I think after polished the granite, you can't see any porous on the surface. But anyway, is good if you go to any showroom and have a look on the granite espcially black granite.

To be fair, actually granite is not the second hardest material after diamond. Most granite mainly consist of quartz mineral, with other minerals as secondary mineral (biotite, pyrite, muscovite, etc). If you look at the mohs scale (mineral hardness scale), you can see that quartz fall at no 4. But all top 3 minerals are not as abundant as quartz, which classified them as precious stones.

hi all,

If for hanging cabinet,
traditional wood-based cabinet vs the modern-style aluminium cabinet :

- wat are the pro & con ?
- how's market price differences between the 2 ?

3G glass door
There is 1 piece of glass in front, and colour sticker in middle, then melamine board at behind. It can't be scratch easily and can clean easily. But it is heavy then other materials, and it can't put on any handle but only built-in handle.

Membrane Press Door
It can has the glossy effect on the surface. It is MDF board but cover up with a colour layer on it. you can put on any handle to decorate your doors and it do not need any aluminum frame on ther doors. anyway, you have to take good care of this MDF board if there is any scratch on the surface, the board will give way very soon..

hope cabinet expert can answer my question. I've asked my contractor to raise the tiles at kitchen cabinet area a little bit (2 inch). just now when I returned home, looks like he does not raise the floor at this cabinet area in fact he already installed tiles. my question how normally we raise floor in this area? either we raise the floor then install tiles OR install tiles, raise the floor from tiles and put another tiles on top? Just want to get prepare before asking him tomorrow as he always try to divert to another issue

Thanks.
*
Yup...I heard its the same actually.
My mom is currently using it and after 16 years its starting to peel, morph and get soft and the edges where it meets the wall.

How much is the per foot run price you got for Melamin/Chipboard ?
You can get granite for RM150 per foot run. Of course there are other affordable options.

It is acrylic. I paid 7k for the wet+dry kitchen excluding the concrete top. That fridge is like a prick for the eyes...

oh..haha. rubbin as is rubbing. not sure about older stains...still new. but if u keep it well maintained like don let any liquid stand too long should be fine.

old stains as in liquid stains? corian surfaces are non-porous..so water does not absorb into it.

I notice that most of the hood installed very high from the hob. Won't that affect the suction? What is the standard distance?

The distance between hood and table is around 27 inch to 30 inch. But any way, if you are tall and you place the hood at 27 inch, then the hood will just right in front your eyes and you might hit the hood when you cook. brows.gif

Solid surface is man made. Granite is natural stone.
Solidsurface discolors easier comparedto granite....but what kinda difference are you keen to know?

Solidsurface quoted to me was about RM180per foot run, whereas my research on stone suppliers along JlnIpoh is about RM43per sq foot.

There's a whole lot more you can derive by googling granite vs solidsurface smile.gif

But do they have the kind of length and width as table top? say 10ft by 3ft granite? Those 1pc slab like that, they still charge 43 per sq ft?

Yes , the measurements are customizable. There is a maximum length though. What ever it is, they'll be able to join the granite together to form a 10 feet by 3feet table top.

It is RM43 per sq feet, at least for the ones I'm interested in. Not sure if the color you like is rare and more expensive. Do check out the shops along Jalan Ipoh. Searching for counter top on your own is surely cheaper than engaging an ID or kitchen planner's fees. However its highly recommended to go with a suplier recommended by the designer.
