18105vr better in terms of IQ right?

18-105 VR is sharp. 18-200 very soft to my liking.

Your camera still under warranty? Maybe send it back to Nikon centre for checking. No harm doing so.  smile.gif

Here's the main finding of above article:

Huh? I think I have a problem with above. My understanding from this article is that the ACR software is damn good, but the Nikkor zoom lens is still sucky.  biggrin.gif  Better stay with 18-105.  rclxm9.gif
*
that extreme sharpening is to display JPG vs RAW differences only:

"The above photos clearly show RAW processing magically extracting high detail and sharpness from a low resolution lens. The bottom photo also shows how RAW processing keeps artifacting well in check. In essence, RAW processing has transformed a lens with bottom-of-the-barrel optical resolution into a star performer."

Yes, this lens is not 'sharp' no doubt, but with the article did suggest with RAW adjustments these flaws can be reduced to acceptable levels, don't you guys agree?

If u read back, the author did mention that this is a low resolution lens wink.gif I just want to say, this lens is far away from sucky! Cheers.

18-105 and its predecessor 18-135 are sharp at most of the focal lengths. 18-105 has improved on the wide end (less distortion). Anyway..... let's not forget 1 x 18-200VR can buy 3 X 18-105VR (almost).

Current price (Ipoh) RM 850 fast AF, sharp and nice smooth bokeh. A very useful range to have. My - opinion... if you have the budget ... grab it!! Hard to get a lens like this at this price.

Ok so he didn't say the lens was sucky. But he did say its the least sharp lens he has seen in 35 years. That's pretty bad.

However my question is that he seems to justify that lens by saying with ACR you can get very sharp pictures. He heaps a lot of praise on Nikon being visionary and I quote,
QUOTE
What is news is Nikon's bold and daring strategy of taking consumer-grade optics, and selling them in the form of a professional lens (RM2,685 Ouch!!). It takes guts to do that.  whistling.gif
<--so funny rclxm9.gif

Shouldn't the praise be directed at Adobe or the guy in Adobe who invented the sharpening algorithm? Seems like Nikon's internal sharpening algorithm didn't do a good job.

Also I don't think maximum sharpening is the "BaBam!!" holy grail. Otherwise a lot of these lens companies can close shop la. Use plastic Diana lens also can get pro level picture. Just shoot raw and apply maximum sharpening. biggrin.gif (ok I exaggerate, but you get my point.)

yes. i would say so too.

well, IQ wise in most cases the smaller the focal range or a zoom lens the better the IQ.

nikon 17-55 and 18-200VR. which has better IQ? of course the 17-55

even 18-55VR or non VR has better IQ than 18-200VR

superzooms are very very versatile but at the cost of IQ. so the final choice rests on the buyer..

and 18-105 VR also improved on Chromatic aberration...plus the VR

and i might also add that 18200VR has a 2nd generation VRii that is better than 18-105's VR. 70-300VRii also got 2nd generation vr

So... if I wanna buy a zoom lens, which is highly recommended? My current lens is only D40 kit lens (18-55mm NON-VR)...

My next lens will be zoom lens or prime lens.
If i am going to buy zoom lens, after seeing many reviews about the sharpness of 18-200mm VR i decided to cross it out in my list.

Anyone can recommend?
Erm I want Autofocus, sharpness, IQ and brand doesn't matter. Third party also can, if cheap + nice IQ then best ^.^

I have 18-135mm in my mind, how is the IQ and price?
