Pardon my ignorance for not reading the whole 80+ pages ><
I'm now using D40 and the built-in flash is spoilt. It just happened.
What's the cheapest recommended external flash(is that the right term?)
Oh ya btw, add my name in D40 user's list.

try to get 1 2nd hand sb600 will be goodd for your d40...price should be around rm500 -600 depends on condition and age.

I read about SB-400 @ kenrockwell's website.
What do you think about this one? It's <RM600 for a new one and I really love the low profile look that it has. Not too big but definitely better than the built-in flash. Also I kind of prefer original accessories than 3rd party ones.

OMG, guys my DSLR jz fixed 2 weeks ago in HK now got problem again..... the timer/Fn button near the lens mount of my D5000 cant use... its like stuck there, cant press at all
