Cantonese.

Literal translation --- falling on the street.

Meaning --- broke, then suicide by jumping from high building, and fall to the street below.

pokai in cantonese is actually falling down physically(jatuh)

whereby pokai in malay is broke. people in hong kong dont define pokai as broke. but to fall down or to curse some one.

pokai is already a word registered in BM, borrowed from cantonese. the meaning differs slightly from the original word, as been described numerous time already.

its still an adaptation from the Cantonese language,Kamus DewanThe Third Edition printed in 1994

same like most of the english adapted words used by malays...it still went into the Kamus...so no...pokai is originated from Cantonese, its is considered as an "adapted word" in Malay

if u plan to use it in BM, then it will carry the BM meaning - running out of money. u cant really use it in other context, despite certain usage such as "pokai idea". the correct usage would be "ketandusan idea" or "kehabisan idea".

but if u use it in other language, it will carry its original meaning.

why is borrowing or copying words from other language such a big deal?

language belongs to the speaker. if more people speak a particular language, wouldnt it be cool?

european languages are rooted to latin. bahasa is rooted to sanskrit. language EVOLVES. get over it.

nobody knows for sure the etymology of the malay word "pokai". it could have been from any language. just because there is a word that sounds the same in canto doesnt mean the malay word was actually derived from it.

malays have to admid that their language have not reached maturity state...

good eg, they cannot even describe a "ball" , instead they borrow words from english, but they cannot pronounce it correctly, so they call it "bola"... can you see how young the language is?

I dont think it is young...but it is their nature to copy because according to history their glory are by the maritime geverment...so many sosialising with foreigner until many scholer in malaysian once ask what truly is a distinctive malay tradition and so on...and there almost nothing ...everything are copy from somebody....so malay is like a 'bangsa' of copying...cant help b'coz of so many of trading in the old days ,which include trading and changing idea's........etc

and yes, it is malay word which came from cantonese.
i found this word in malay kamus when i was in form4 which is 9 years ago. and god knows how long they already been using this word.

and side note...
even some malay dont even know this is consider a malay word.
one of my friend write pokai in his karangan last time and the teacher circle it. end up my friend show teacher the kamus then he remark and gain some marks. laugh.gif

hoho,,that is actually normal right...we have to follow the teacher...eventhough the teacher is wrong or ignorant ...the teacher will be offended if your friend tell the teacher this right....

KAMUS DEWAN > Teacher

I still remember back in my priamry school days... when ever i asked the BM teacher the meaning of a word, he;ll just reply "KAMUS DEWAN".

I always thought Cantonese "pokai" is pretty much a vulgar word, well not that but not nice to hear in some situations, i.e. talking to your parents, school, meetings ,etc...
