same like most of the english adapted words used by malays...it still went into the Kamus...so no...pokai is originated from Cantonese,its is considered as an "adapted word" in Malay

if u plan to use it in BM, then it will carry the BM meaning - running out of money. u cant really use it in other context, despite certain usage such as "pokai idea". the correct usage would be "ketandusan idea" or "kehabisan idea".

but if u use it in other language, it will carry its original meaning.

nobody knows for sure the etymology of the malay word "pokai". it could have been from any language. just because there is a word that sounds the same in canto doesnt mean the malay word was actually derived from it.

and yes, it is malay word which came from cantonese.
i found this word in malay kamus when i was in form4 which is 9 years ago. and god knows how long they already been using this word.

and side note...
even some malay dont even know this is consider a malay word.
one of my friend write pokai in his karangan last time and the teacher circle it. end up my friend show teacher the kamus then he remark and gain some marks.
