Okay, reporting back on a certain WD Scorpio Black 500GB. Guess what, that's out of the window, and nestling inside my MacBook Pro is an OCZ Vertex 2 SSD (120GB).

Why OCZ?

1. Researching the web points out the fact that if you use Mac OS X that does not come with TRIM support (It reports TRIM as No in System), your best option would be Sandforce Based SSD (Spesifically SF-1200 controllers, either the OCZ Vertex 2, Agility or Corsair Force - Those are the ones that are available retail).

2. Other controllers require TRIM support to keep writing performance at max. If you use Mac OS exclusively, do not buy Crucial. Requires TRIM support to ensure peak write performance over time.

3. Its either OCZ, Kingston, Intel or Corsair. Heard a rumor about Corsair's firmware issues. Intel, still too expensive, Kingston one gen behind.

First impressions :-

1. Whisper quiet - Seriously, the only noise I hear now is the aircond in my loft, the click of the keyboard and nothing else. The annoying low frequency whine is gone.

2. Blazing fast - Seriously, installed a fresh copy of Snow Leopard in under 20 minutes. Everything pops out now.

About the desktop external hdd, can i just buy any of them (WD, Seagate, Samsung etc), plug-in and use? Or must it be Mac friendly? hmm.gif

Sorry, ain't sure whether this is the right thread to discuss.

Problem isn't the brand, it's the format of the drive. For you to use it must be in a format that mac os can read such as fat32. I don't think mac os can read/write ntfs, unless you install a driver.

No problem, just format the drive in something universal, like fat32.

hey there. u have three choices smile.gif

1) format ur drive in FAT32. the limitation here is u cant store files larger than 4gb. no problems with folders, but not files.
2) format to NTFS. then install a software named NTFS-3G. it lets u paste/delete files to ur external. limitation here is transfer speed is pretty slow. u can get tuxera NTFS or paragon NTFS, which is faster, but they're not free
3) format to Mac OS journaled HFS. limitation here, it wont work in windows tongue.gif

hi all expert, gonna ask about the upgrading ram for my old mac mini...

this is the spec:

Model Name: Mac mini
Model Identifier: Macmini3,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
Boot ROM Version: MM31.0081.B06
SMC Version (system): 1.35f0
Hardware UUID: C272292F-1825-5E1C-A0F5-9382D2907B2D

the original ram is 1GB DDR3, recently multitasking, and realize my mac is really like tortoise, so gonna upgrade to 4GB, can i use the normal ram (i mean KVR-kingston value ram)? bcos my budget very limited, cant afford KTA-kingston..

pls give me comment, thank you:)

Seagate Momentus-XT Solid State Hybrid Drive, anyone tried? i am thinking of upgrading the 320gb mbp to this 500gb drive. 1st i was thinking of SSD than the capacity issues.

any problems working this on mac and the price is quite decent as well.

the endgadget review says slight improvement on day to day usage.

http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/09/seagate...d-drive-review/

but i do need a bigger hdd. 320gb is hardly enuff in todays world and i bound to carry an external hdd. i reckon a swift upgrade to 500gb allowed me to carry thumdrives than ext hdd ;p
