The phone will be based on what will become the Symbian Foundation operating system, which means that thousands of applications will be available online. PlayNow will be pre-installed, and will allow you to personalize the phone.

The ‘Idou’ will be available during the second half of 2009 - naturally marketed by a different product name.

What happen to symbian foundation? Nokia cant grab hold of it anymore? Symbian is nokia trademark without it any phone is a competitor

Symbian is open source already. Read the news. All shares in Symbian bought by Nokia in June 2008 and let it become open source, called Symbian Foundation. So now, Symbian technically doesnt belong to anyone.

This phone will probably be my next target. Symbian, high def screen, EXMOR sensor. A win, period.

Although Nokia is the owner of Symbian Ltd, but many of the handphone manufacturer have joined symbian foundation, including SE, Samsung, Motorola etc. Further more, Symbian OS is open source software.

Symbian Ltd. is a trademark of Nokia, but symbian OS is not. its an open sourse software.

Symbian OS is not used by Nokia only. SE have created their own symbian Os named as UIQ long ago, while Symbian S60 is the OS used by nokia. they r all based on symbian. now, after joining the Symbian foundation, the member will use the same symbian OS.

Did i say i got problem with that? The reason i mentioned "read the news" is because that the source of my information. And you should know not only Nokia make Symbian phone. Samsung probably has dozen of it, maybe half.

although the full spec is not release yet, but from the picture above, i can see it's using a xenon flash rather than LED flash, witch is a good news. It would be perfect if it has optical zoom, but ya i know I'm asking too much.

since W995 record video in WQVGA@30 fps, i think idou would at lease be the same.

I hope the UI is different from nokia's, I dont like Nokia's UI much, I don't mean Nokia's UI no good, but everyone's taste is different....

I think this phone will cost RM3k++....

what shock me to death is se releases their 1st:
- 12 mp cam
- is it the 1st 16.9 ? touch screen phone ? not sure
- se with symbian os (uiq su'ks)
- 3.5 , 16 mil color screen
- touchscreen cybershot phone along with xenon.

in my opinion i think SE idou = n82+5800 (or maybe +n97)

FYI, UIQ IS one of the symbian OS, witch is createdby SE from the open sourse symbian OS, while the symbian OS used by nokia is called Symbian 60 (some use symbian 40)

Hehe. I'm really drawn into the Idou's camera sensor. It's not just because it's 12.1MP, but because the sensor size is much bigger than current mobile phone camera sensors. So we can expect high quality photographs coming from a mobile phone! biggrin.gif

n97 more toward for E-series + normal N-series.
but this Idou and Omnia HD more toward, multimedia and entertainment .
after saw Omnia HD, Idou, Touch Pro2 pics, the n97 js look like a cheap looking phone.
maybe the n97 will become js like n96, not a very success model, not as success as n95/n95 8gb

Not yet. But I believe they're going to announce the N86 soon. It will have 8mp but with LED flash only. No xenon.

MP means nothing if the outcome looks like shit..
i have a DLSR and i set the image size to 3.2MP only laugh.gif
the usual misconception is the bigger MP is the better picture quality which is totally wrong.

the image size doesn't matter unless u want to print your image to poster size etc..
for 4R size or merely to upload on facebook etc...3.2MP is more than enough icon_rolleyes.gif

bigger resolution not necessarily will produce better picture quality, u have to check the sensor size etc..

Well there's nothing wrong with any mobile operating system used be it WinMo, Symbian-S40/60/80, Symbian-UIQ, MobileLinux, etc. Its more about market segmentation. I don't believe the 'Omnia HD' will be the name. We've already got an Omnia HD which is a Korean-only product. Its the same Omnia but with a higher resolution screen plus other improvements. The i8910 will be one of Samsung's infotainment line of phones. The infotainment line of phones WILL use both WinMo and Symbian depending on models. Maybe they will go completely Symbian because WinMo (in its current state) isn't as friendly as most consumers would like it to be.

WinMo 7 will be a better answer to that but we don't know now, obviously. But that does not mean WinMo is complete rubbish. The reason why mobile operating system like WinMo is preferred is due to the ease of programming especially when you want a custom UI shell on top of it. Thats how we got TouchFlo/3D, Xperia Panels, Samsung UI. Its easy to write in .Net mobile frameworks, Windows related standards than on Symbian. By the way Symbian does not provide the infrastructure for complex UI transitions. However, Symbian can be very light weighted without fancy UIs. Then we have to say both Symbian and WinMo is equal in the UI side of things. Flash UI was promising but it wasn't on most Symbian due to licensing issues. Symbian Foundation will be a better avenue for that.

So I would thing of it in different market segmentations. WinMo for business users who wants Push Mail and still have most of the common Windows-like apps and file format support system. Symbian S60/Symbian Foundation for the mid-high end market while Symbian S40 (Nokia-only) for the mass consumer market. For other manufacturers, it will still be dominated with Flash UI non-smartphone interfaces.

I have checked their videos. I hope the menu action isn't pre-rendered. Otherwise, looks like we have a pretty functional prototype which indicates product readiness. Guess we will have to keep an eye on FCC/CE leaks. If these products hit FCC/CE before Q2 ends, we should be able to expect Q3/4 launch. Otherwise, it'll be next year. biggrin.gif

most people does not need cameras that has more than 5mp...seriously it's a marketing gimmick that an 8mp is better than 5mp.
there's no need for an 8mp camera if the quality is still lacking...

quality is much more important than MP count..

for a graphic designer like me, i do need both quality and MP count as a higher mp camera makes larger pictures and i can easily use these large pictures for large scale prints like large banners and billboards.

Larger photo and larger prints only lor... If we used it on PC/Web, no difference. In fact, it'll be ruin if we don't resize it. When was the last time you receive ugly quality pictures from ultra large forwarded emails because the sender forgot to resize them?

Anyway picture quality will most likely suffer since they're cramming more pixels to the same sensor size. Unless they enlarge the silicon die to accommodate 4MP increase in resolution. Otherwise, we'll see overflowing of light to the neighbor sensor, noise and all the unacceptable characteristics of ultra-highly dense sensor chip. The compact camera is bad enough.

Actually, I'd rather hope they keep all the rest of the feature, but give it a 8mp or 5mp camera and cut down the cost by 200??

I mean, the rest of the features are already pre existing. I think the cost of the phone can be much lower had they chosen a lower MP phone.

If SE can come out with a 1.7k phone (firsts launch price) that looks and use like that, they'll definitely own the entire msian market.

12MP is not really useful, and will just add cost to the phone, IMHO.
Especially now with the economic downtrend and what not.

only for replacing our PnS camera la..i do believe c905 camera quality is already on par wif other compact digicam..

it never will take over digital camera; not at the meantime. camera's on phone will only for convenience purpose.

unless sony decided to port the whole camera algorithm and chips from a PnS camera and implement into this phone. if not, my guess will be just the same with other phone camera. i am more concern towards the algorithm, not megapixel.

Well if the cost of the phone (final version) doesn't escalate to more than RM2,000 then seriously RM1,700 or RM1,800 is not too bad a price.

I got my current phone last year August at market price for RM1,700 (but that is because I dealt with a reputable trader). Probably for the SE:Idou the price will be high but only for the 12mp it is boasting.

At least we can wait till the end of this year; time to save! biggrin.gif

we will have to see how good is this new sensor by Sony. it is supposedly based off a Sony Alpha DSLR sensor, and the sensor size is bigger than other mobile phone cameras. however, the lense on the phone does look rather small from the photo. mellow.gif

the touchscreen used should be the same resistive touchscreen as used in the 5800. it is unlikely to be capacitive because the Symbian Touch 60 is just not optimized for it (as of now). sleep.gif

same here. but i sold my iphone. last 2 weeks i used back iphone and dem i miss that screen; and iphone too... but now with 5800xm.. at least can tahan awhile la...

i agree with what you said; if the compression is too low, then no point having a 12.1mp when u dont get the detail. that is also why it(phone camera) cant take away digital camera's limelight.

to me, the 5800 is one of the most sensitive resistive touchscreens I used, whereby don't really need any force but just a touch will do. just hoping that the Idou would use back roughly the same sensitive screen as the 5800xm and i'm sure many people will be happy. biggrin.gif

yeah i agree...

there might be more problems with the 12mp camera if:

1. it uses the same sized sensor ( no point increasing mp count )
2. it has a higher compression rate because of the size of the pic


and for a phone...the above problems are usually there... they wont use a DSLR sensor on a cameraphone..it would be much much more expensive..even if it's possible

This SE Idou more look like an Iphone but without all the drawbacks like camera, speaker, and etc.

I do hope this mobile can perform like an Iphone and better, but I know SE will never be more stylish than an Iphone just because of the name.

using so expensive phone in town not a very good idea...last 2 weeks, my friend iphone just get stolen face-by-face...so sad
and i playing friendster, 12.1mp is meaningless for me bcause the maximum photo size to upload is 2mb...my N82 5mp took photos already 1mb+ something. i cant imagine 12.1mp how big is the size of the photo....nokia camera can adjust to how many megapixel u want, but sony ericsson i dont know...............

that's y nobody can still say iphone killer... iphone is still the killer phone eventhough it has 2mp camera...but the most most nicest thing about iphone is the touchscreen and if idou can replicate this kind of touchscreen it could be an iphone killer.. and also keep in mind that the OS is also important.. win mo vs s60 vs whatever else..

yup. i agree that if someone becomes a victim of theft, the more expensive the phone, the more the loss, so sometimes it it better to just use a cheapo phone.

but i don't think it's really that using expensive phones makes a person the target of thieves. most thieves will take every available opportunity they have to steal/snatch a phone, even those costing about RM100. money is still money to them. it's up to the phone user to try and protect themselves from this by watching their surroundings, although it may not work if you are at knife/gun-point.

yeah i do agree. the most important thing is to make sure u take caution whenever u are using a phone regardless whether it is expensive or not, like when u r talking on a phone, using/typing on a phone, even the pockets u put your phones in..

Yeah, the article mentioned about its 'Exmor' family qualities. Hopefully they will implement the same design implementations for mobile phones. So we'll get good noise characteristics for such a high resolution sensor chip. The Exmor was pretty successful with the A700 followed by the full frame A900. Anyway this Idou sounds like an entertainment phone with focus on music. Another high end Walkman phone? I wonder they will have something for the 'Cybershot' only phone in their sleeves. Or maybe Idou is part of a new line of smartphones, since UIQ has been dropped off?

my guess, Idou will be the camera focused multimedia phone due to the 12.1mp. or they just want to create the hype of 12.1mp becoz in 8mp race, Samsung started it 1st. again, no point doing a MP races when they dont fix that stupid compression and detail loss. they(phone makers) seems to forget that now we have 8gb and 16gb card. come on... 12mp photo wont take much of space now...

Price aside, I think Sony Ericsson just got back in the game with this one after so many disappointing moves. 12.1mp touch-based camera phone totally got me sold. I won't ask for my wife's permission to buy this because she probably won't let me with the price tag it's going to incur LOL. Mr. d*** Komiyama (SE new CEO) really put SE back in the map, and better yet, you know we've always envied SE's products in the Japanese market which are so different than the rest of the world's. Now we'll finally get a taste of it since the SE's Japanese counterparts will be developing this beast this time around so we can expect something special as a result.

@fir3f0x : thanks for the video. seems like the UI is quite smooth. although the phone might be a bit think IMO.

@Seaedge : do agree with the statement too. seriously there's no point in getting higher MPs w/o improving on the photo quality. 5MP/8MP is sufficient given the phone comes with a good chip from Sony's Cybershot cameras lineup.

I'm only saying about the release date of this phone, nevermind the other products. This is the only phone that seems to attract a lot of people during MWC. There are not many high-end phones this year because of the recession.

talking about iphone, the only thing worth to be impressed at is its multitouch screen, no more. iPhone OS has been over-simplified for the sake of "style" and aesthetics. Eg. there's no way to switch to another application without quitting the current one.


Sadly this Idou don't come with multitouch, prolly is the current Symbian not yet develop the API for multitouch, seeing the demo video, very likely it still will deliver iphone-like experience, with both HW/SF much greater than iphone.

->oh ya, Symbian is well known for running 10+ apps at once, that is what we call as true "multitasking" flex.gif

in fact, i think some is thinner than C905. =p
but the only problem is the phone requires more PCB and chips.. so.... still having a hard time putting in optical zoom lo

Samsung G800 is equip with 3x optical zoom & xenon flash, best camera phone so far imo. but ya, 18.8mm thickness....

FYI, there's an application in Cydia/Installer that allows iPhone to multitask aka running few applications in the background. it's called Backgrounder. available for free and i'm using it right now. but you can only get it installed given that your iPhone is jailbroken. smile.gif

anyway, from the video provided by one of the forummer here, there seems to be no lag issues with the touch UI. i'm an ex-SE user and it's great to see how SE managed to come out with such an awesome phone. icon_rolleyes.gif

I know that it can be enabled only after jailbroken, but then it is something not really endorsed by Apple, same as cracking S60 into allowing unsigned installer.

One thing I find that there's a bit delay when u navigate the screen, like u want to see another picture, it will delay 0.5sec only will change... is Iphone also the same?

any info on what chipset/CPU this phone is using...cos AFAIK samsung Omnia HD runs on OMAP3 chip, i think the camera need the OMAP3 chip to process the imagine also..so..what about this one??

so far i know it's a PowerVR enabled device, PowerVr is the graphic processing chip that OMAP chips is using, so there is a high chance that this device is using OMAP3 also..

watched some youtube on this gorgeous phone!!

difference between it and 5800XM:
1)absolutely noticable smoother operation
2)prettier UI with heavy flash (despite the flash it still runs smoother than 5800)
3)better camera, higher resolution, xenon flash
4)larger screen (saw in videos that it has a glare finish lcd, hope it's not in the final retail version)
5)better audio quality (it's always been true for SE phones than nokia's)
6)price (expected to cost a bunch, maybe around RM2500?)

you left out something..
PowerVR used on device, that enable way better imagine processing, and also graphic capability to be same as OmniaHD should it's actually using OMAP3

and i suppose the touch screen is also much responsive compared to 5800, cos i recall that i need to tap quite hard when i try at nokia center...

very nice phone, but sony ericsson always spoil my mood. very good features already then suddenly the os is just symbian, why not just go for windows mobile. damn! SE always spoil their phone.

I'm quite interested with this phone as well. The 12MP cam. and Xenon is really attracting me. I'm currently comparing this with Samsung OmniaHD/i8910. Iduo has a high MP count, but base on SE track record, i'm a bit worry about it's video capturing function.

btw, we are almost at the peak of Lithium Ion polymer batteries... so, unless got some technological breakthru, higher capacity batteries can only come by in larger packages... which will make the phone big and fat. shakehead.gif

This is a nice spec hp, but the software support for SE turn me off, SE pc connecting software sucks big time, if they can improve on that front, this model would definately be my next upgrade, next to samsung i8910.

The OS is the same, but SE have to come out with their own connecting software, just like their proprietary OS, this is the main reason i stay with nokia, they have the best connecting software period.

Capacitive touch screen is more sensitive and offer a better clarity and you don't have to physically touch the screen to register a touch. Iphone is using this kind of touch technology. Disadvantage is you can only register a touch with your finger, no pen stylus or other object.

Er...Samsung OmniaHD running on S60 5.0 is using capacitive touch screen so i guess you don't have to really develop your own OS for that. Pretty much all touch screen OS can handle capacitive touch screen, it just the phone manufacturer's discretion whether want to use the better or the old touch screen tech.

Gotta agree with this, they just sell it at whatever price they wanna sell it because in long run they can slowly lower their pricing. SE high end like the X1 take months for is price to drop,that also just a little.

since X1 also uses it.
besides, it would be a plus point for it since micro sd is cheaper than m2.

haiyor....stop wif the detain detain talk lar...it is totally nonsense if SE decided to detain this phone or wtv.
the only possibility tat this phone will arrive late is becoz we are in Malaysia.
they usually release in UK, Europe 1st.
coz its nearer. and any problem can be fixed at their HQ there. and improve design.
SO.... if it arrives in Malaysia later, we shud be happy coz the bugs n build quality have been fixed n improved...
just like what happened to C905.

no word from SE sweden yet. =p

My friend wants to get a E71, so I'm planning to sell him mine within this week and wait for Idou. How disappointing to see that the release date is still so far away.

Now I need to look for a temporary phone until Idou is released. Only hope they speed things up a little. The last SE phone I actually waited for was the K850 but I went for the N82 instead (due to the popularity of its xenon flash camera).

I hope I am making the right choice now (again, waiting for SE).

since this would be the 1st symbian phone of SE and also the 12megapixel flagship phone marketed under the Entertainment Unlimited series...
i dont think SE would wanna screw it up. =p
juz rmb to buy ori set. coz ap set might have problems n u will be disappointed wif it.

Ok, I usually go for original set as well cause dont wanna regret with some bugs the AP may contain.

I only worry that they lower their 12MP to 8MP because 12MP is not achievable? Is that possible? Overall, this phone makes a lot of people drool, including me!

coz 1 thing is they need to have the marketing hype.
2nd thing is, the technology IS possible to achieve. In fact, if they dare to announced tat they r developing the phone, means they wud already have quite alot of preparation...
so... its 99% stay at 12mp for this phone. =p
u can set it to 8mp if u wan tho. like all the digital cameras like that. lol

i dun understand what bugs that ap contained.
the mozt is that you can update you phone firmware locally/d.i.y

but the update is really a hassle
wipe out everything and everything set to default.

unless it has a debilitating flaw that really requiress updating

even then any bug does not affect AP specifically
more on the whole batch

Thanks for sharing. I'm plain skeptical about AP products. Dont mind me. Just need to check with you guys - how's the firmware updating process like for a SE phone? Is it more complex than upgrading the firmware of a Nokia phone?

Or is it the same, update via software on PC, straight forward?

i have never able to really update the firmware OTA style...
the most is informing me that i have the latest firmware

PC-USB
just the other day, updated my w595...
took less than 30 mins
quite easy actually
the on-screen instruction is simple and effective

only the aftermath...all data is lost, alarms, mods, everything on the phone is wipe clean
and revert back to new phone status
even the call timer is set back to 0
