@cckkpr
thanks.
I agree to some extent, competent prof. will always be in demand but as Huskies mentioned this might not be entirely applicable for medicine...although we never know being here, a doctor is a doctor regardless how incompetent the person may be.

@huskies
Parents know nothing of Med sch., and school-leavers barely knows what medicine is all about which frustrates me. M''sia should adopt a system where only a degree holder could apply for Medicine; only graduate medical schools. Just like Uni. of Melbourne did where they scrap their 5 yr mbbs into a 4 yrs M.D graduate, to apply you need to be a science based degree holder with pre-requisite subjects as anatomy, biochem, physio, etc...this eliminates all the wanna-bes and the obsessed parents.

I've looked at Perdana U which is our 1st graduate med sch. but the fees are killer just to have J.H. written in your CV! although this allows a path for residency in U.S, which might attract some of the rich ones.

Ppl like me are the ones who are being left out here - when i talk to most of the sch. (Monash, etc), they told me i am not eligible for the prog. as these are Undergrad. level studies. Monash said to apply to their graduate med school located in Aussie - but i respondd my pref. of staying in M''sia after living abroad for years! >_< haha, frustrates me thinking abt some of the lame reasons given by few sch. i wont mention here! But the real truth is that they perceive me as a liability to their accreditation/recognition, worried abt MQA/MMC given my qualifications i come with (no local qualifications as PMR, SPM; all frm international sch. abroad + mpharm.) for an undergrad. mbbs. N yes i was born in M''sia if you all are curious. lol.

@limeeu
Although my passion lies with medicine, with the current situation and the controversies with med schools here - i don't think M''sia is ready for someone like me haha,, (not to sound arrogant); bcus the system looks and sounds a bit wonky, so i might rather stick to pharmacy and enjoy at what i do instead of being stuck in a wonky system that might not benefit me in 5 yrs time!

Thanks to all the comments, definitely struck some nerves there and making me think!

the melbourne model changed the 6 year undergraduate mbbs to the current 3+4 year graduate entry md.......that melbourne model has decided becoming the american model...... biggrin.gif

the healthcare scene in msia is going to be messy going forward, as there are too many doubtful med students (and new doctors) getting in to the medical profession, and that will inevitably drag down the general quality.........i agree with someone earlier, if you want an idea about what it may be like 10-15 years from now, look at indonesian healthcare system now........

dumbing down of education is never a good thing (see the number of straight a's students in this year's spm), but dumbing down doctoring to the lowest common denominator can and will be disastrous..........

Johns Hopkins medical programme in M’sia will be a big lure: PM

WASHINGTON: The opening of the world-renowned teaching and research medical institution Johns Hopkins University in Serdang, Malaysia this September would be a big lure, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

The prime minister said it was expected to attract students, not only from other nations in the region, but also from Middle East and the Indian sub-continent.

"I am confident the Johns Hopkins medical programme will be a phenomenal lure," he said at an event to mark the establishment of the Johns Hopkins Dr Mohan Swami Institute for International Medical Education at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, about an hour's drive from here.

Najib arrived here Friday after a three-day working visit to New York.

Also present at the event Friday were Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin, Malaysian Ambassador to the United States Datuk Jamaluddin Jarjis, Tan Sri Mohan Swami and top leadership of the university, including Edward D. Miller, the Chief Executive Officer of Johns Hopkins University.

The Johns Hopkins medical programme will be offered in collaboration with Perdana University and offer the first private teaching hospital with world-class medical facilities to be established in Serdang under the Mohan's Chase Perdana group.

Wouldn't it make more sense to inject the 50 million into our public universities ?!!

How exactly does PUGSOM justify its exorbitant fees? This is a country with no minimum wage policy and a GDP per capita that is 6 times smaller than the United States and somehow the tuition fee is higher than what is charged in Baltimore !!!

The tuition fees could very well be used to foot the massive paychecks that these JHU academics will demand...
And if you look at their website, they just assigned a couple of academics as "adjunct" professors...how can this be a sincere initiative from Johns Hopkins University, "adjunct" professors at the most expensive university in the world??? Not only is this project siphoning money away from Malaysians, it doesn't even solve the chronic problem of medical teaching staff shortage that is plaguing the system.

Doesn't it seem weird that none of the private universities in Malaysia have their financial statement available for public access? Makes you wonder where all the money is going to...

lol companies that are not public listed have no obligation to show the public their financial statements ^^" It's not weird at all that you can't find their financial statements available publicly.

They may not be public listed, but the bulk of their income still comes from the government (ie taxpayers) in the form of student financial aid (scholarship or loan). Don't you think the public deserves to know how the money is put to use?

Well, I guess that's Malaysian accountability for you. Harvard is a private institution, but its annual financial report is available to everyone.

The other 25 students could come from Mara sponsored and other GLCs sponsored. Why should students from Middle East and India come to this uni? If they wanted John Hopkins, they would have opt for the genuine one and not this fake duplicate!

they will still consider this pseudo-jh because it will be very much EASIER to get in.........

presumably the perdana will incorporate the usmle step 1 and 2 into their programme, so graduates will be able to look for jobs in the us on graduation.....

not that different from some students from ipts who undertake the usmle privately......

So if the graduates are going to work in the United States anyway, then why bother fund them in the first place??? Johns Hopkins must be laughing their socks off at our stupidity rclxub.gif
