What is iPod Touch?

The iPod Touch (trademarked and marketed as the iPod touch and sometimes referred to by third parties as the iTouch) is a portable media player and Wi-Fi mobile platform designed and marketed by Apple Inc. The product was launched on September 5, 2007 through an event called The Beat Goes On. The iPod Touch adds the Multi-Touch graphical user interface to the iPod line and is available with 8, 16, or 32 GB of flash memory. It includes Apple's Safari web browser and is the first iPod with wireless access to the iTunes Store. With a software update, which is sold by Apple, it also has access to Apple's App Store. The second generation iPod Touch, featuring external volume controls, an external speaker, a contoured back and built-in Nike+ support, was unveiled on September 9, 2008 at the Let's Rock keynote presentation.

Description
The iPod Touch has the iPhone's multi-touch interface, with a physical home button off the touch screen. The home screen has a list of buttons for the available applications. All iPod Touch models have included the applications Music, Videos, and Photos (collectively duplicating the standard functions of the iPod classic), iTunes (providing access to the Wi-Fi Music Store), Safari, YouTube, Calendar, Contacts, Clock, Calculator, and Settings. Later models added Mail (accessing POP/IMAP/SMTP e-mail), Maps, Stocks, Notes, and Weather,[7] which could also be added to the earlier models with the purchase of a software upgrade. Direct links to web sites can be added to the home screen by the user.

New applications including a VPN client, scientific calculator and access to third party applications were released for an upgrade fee on July 11, 2008.[8] For more details on this topic, see iPhone OS version history.

Music
If a picture says a thousand words, think of what all the album art in your collection might say. With Cover Flow on iPod touch, you can flick through your music to find the album you want to hear. And when you do, a quick tap of the cover flips it over to display a track list. Another tap starts the music.

Video
The 3.5-inch display gives you video like nothing you've seen before on a portable device. Watch your favorite movie. Catch up on television shows, anywhere. Enjoy video podcasts. Play music videos. All using multi-touch technology that lets you bring up onscreen controls and go widescreen (or back to full screen) with a tap.

Photos
iPod touch holds up to 20,000 photos you sync via iTunes. Flick to scroll through thumbnails. Tap to view full screen. Rotate for landscape format. Or perform some sleight of hand by opening two fingers to zoom in. You can even play slideshows, complete with music and transitions. Set any photo as your wallpaper to personalize your iPod touch...with a touch.

Safari
With Apple's Safari browser built in, iPod touch is the only iPod that gives you wireless access to the web, everywhere you go. See websites the way they were designed to be seen. Sync your bookmarks or add a few as you go. Search the web using the touchscreen keyboard. Zoom in and out by tapping the multi-touch display.

YouTube
Got a bit of a YouTube addiction? iPod touch feeds it from anywhere with a special YouTube player built right in. Watch featured videos, check out the most viewed, search for something specific, then bookmark your favorites for future reference. It's all the fun of YouTube--pocket-size.

iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store
With iPod touch, you can discover new music anywhere. Built-in wireless capability gives you access to the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, where you can buy songs with a tap. Browse New Releases, What's Hot, and Just Added lists. Or find exactly what you're looking for with a quick search. Tap a song to preview it or tap Buy to purchase it. From anywhere.

Starbucks Music
You walk into a Starbucks. Order your latte. While you wait, you hear a song wafting from the loudspeakers. You love it. So you get out your iPod touch and buy it over Wi-Fi. Just like that. The iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store on iPod touch tells you what's playing in select Starbucks and lets you buy it along with other featured Starbucks content. So you can sip, shop, and listen.

Multi-touch
iPod touch features the same revolutionary interface as iPhone. Built to take full advantage of the large 3.5-inch display, the multi-touch interface lets you control everything using only your fingers. So you can glide through albums with Cover Flow, flick through photos and enlarge them with a pinch, or zoom in and out on a section of a web page. And iPod touch features a touchscreen QWERTY keyboard perfect for browsing the web in Safari, searching for videos on YouTube, finding music on the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, entering calendar events, or adding new contacts.

Ambient Light Sensor
The iPod touch display has an ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts brightness to suit the ambient light in your surroundings. The result? A better experience for you and battery-saving efficiency for iPod touch.

Accelerometer
An accelerometer detects when you rotate iPod touch from portrait to landscape, then automatically changes the contents of the display, so you immediately see the entire width of a web page, your music in Cover Flow, or a photo in its proper aspect ratio.

iPod Touch 1st gen VS 2nd Gen iPod Touch

However, with a closer look, one will quickly notice that the iPod touch 2G has a silver front trim rather than gray. The iPod touch 2G also is rounded a bit more with a design reminiscent of the iPhone 3G. The back of both models is chromed steel, but the plastic "window" for the wi-fi antenna is oval shaped on the iPod touch 2G compared to covering the entire upper left corner on the original model, which makes visual identification easy.

One also will notice that the iPod touch 2G has external volume buttons on the left hand side of the device, a greatly welcomed addition. An integrated speaker and microphone (the microphone is not yet supported in software) also have been added to the iPod touch 2G.

Although it is not readily apparent from physical inspection, the iPod touch 2G is 0.02 of an inch thicker than the original iPod touch, but the more rounded design makes it appear to be thinner. The iPod touch 2G is slightly lighter (0.15 ounces) than the original model as well.

Like the original model, the iPod touch 2G features a "multi-touch" sensitive 3.5" display with 320x480 resolution -- albeit a higher-quality one than that provided by the original -- an accelerometer that allows the device to "know" whether it is being held in portrait or landscape mode and switch automatically, an ambient light sensor to adjust screen brightness, built-in support for Wi-Fi (802.11b/g), and 8, 16, or 32 GB of flash memory.

The iPod touch 2G also adds "shake to shuffle" support -- where shaking the device gently will select another song at random -- a new "Genius" feature that dynamically creates playlists based on "songs that go great together", and integrated support for Nike + iPod.

Additionally, battery life for the iPod touch 2G has been improved, as the 2G model provides 36 hours of music playback and 6 hours of video, compared to 22 hours of music playback and 5 hours of video playback for the original model.

For your convenience, the primary differences between the iPod touch 2G and the original iPod touch are summarized below:

1) Go to Settings/Wifi/Turn On.
2) It will automatically detects my wireless network and the check mark appears. But no connection to the internet yet.
3) I then turn off Wifi.
4) Wait a few seconds
5) Turn on Wifi.

I am looking forward to getting my iPod Touch in a week or two, but contemplating whether should wait for an update. I am in no hurry to get it, so I don't mind. Just wanna get some opinions from owners here.

Looking at the average cycle for the iPod Touch, update should be out in a few months time the most. However I don't think there will be any major update, probably firmware or similar only? Which can still be activated on current iPod Touch?

Well, i got my iPod touch around the later part of October actualy, due to the delays in getting stock from my distri (remember the problem with getting Sirim approvals around that time?)...

One thing i can say if u want to purchase the touch, just go for it! It's one of the topsellers in Machines (see the article in The Star or NST a couple of days back, forgot which paper already!) and many ppl have purchased the touch for the Christmas holidays also...

Guys, i saw one chap with an app on iTunes called SG Transport (also available are SG Trains and SG Buses, which are standalone apps from the Transport one) for the iPhone and iPod touch... I'm actually interested in doing up such an app for our Klang Valley Transportation system (similar to Metro on the PalmOS, but for the iPod platform instead) and I'd like to know what program do these developers use to write their programs...

Maybe, if response is great, i'll also consider expanding this app to cover the other two large metropolises of Penang and Johor Bahru! thumbup.gif

Nice work for creating another version for the tread.

I'm currently trying to find invisibleShield for my iPod Touch 2nd gen. Is anyone see it selling at MidValley, Lowyat Plaza or Pavillion? IF so, care to mention its shop name?

well first-thing-first, you need MONEY to develop touch/iphone app. That's Apple way. Then second, the software they using is iPhone SDK which is only for mac platform and it is free to download. Free members only can code the app and test it out on the iphone emulator but can't test it out on your iphone/touch. You have to pay a 'premium' fee in order to submit the app in appstore. $__$
