D40 used set... it's a really old model already though so I don't recommend getting it.

There's another option though - a new Sony a200. RM1.4k if I'm not wrong.

QUOTE(zidane88 @ Dec 18 2008, 03:25 PM)
kit, as in the body with lens?..so u reckon i have to buy a normal lense and macro..?
*
Yeah.. that'd be good. If you're on a budget though you should make the most out of your kit lens - I'm overseas right now and only equipped with my 18-55 kit lens... take my case as an example.

QUOTE(joyyy @ Dec 18 2008, 04:30 PM)
Actually, the cheapest macro lens for Canon is around RM1k, which is the Canon 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro. http://yamiya.com.my/store/product.php?pro...&cat=251&page=1
The 50mm f/1.8 cant be used for macro. It has a lousy closest focusing distance of around 0.5m, and an image magnification of only 0.1x. From what I know the minimum magnification required for the lens to be considered a macro lens, the magnification should be around 0.5x
*
Oh. notworthy.gif Thanks mate. Enlightened me a lot on macro.

my current camera finally broke on me....which further fires me up to grab a new one....as a ex-powershot owner,i enjoy tinkering here and there with settings, which a dslr comes into mind. however...i have few doubts to clear.hopefully can solve it here lah....

1) Judging from the budget i have...i found that i could afford either (a) a high end compact camera. or (b) an entry level dslr. since my photography preferences are all-rounders. a high end compact seemed more cost effective to me (such as zoom, macro capabilities, and maybe wide angle).although these situation can be fixed simply by changing lens on DSLR....but i do not have few thousands laying around waiting for me to spend there...although i do impress of what a DSLR can do....but how far could i go with kit lens? (which should be 18-55mm for 1000D Kit)

2)Based on several sources there are 2 point on 1000D that bothers me with cheaper A 200

i) 7-point AF Point (1000D) vs. 9-point AF (A200)
ii) without (1000D) spot metering vs. with (A200)
iii) CMOS sensor (1000D) vs. CCD Sensor (A 200)

as i'm not very into DSLR thingies (but do know bit theory about those technical jargon lah) do you think problems above makes a lot of difference to me? and in what kind of situation?  icon_question.gif

appreciate all help from you sifus notworthy.gif

For your budget you can opt for the 1000D, D60, D80 body, a200, a350.

1. High end compact cameras, or known as prosumers, can bring you a long way - but if you do acquire the budget later on, you'll have to sell it off and buy a new DSLR and lens - which would kinda cost you time. Prosumers are like stepping stones into the DSLR world - and trust me, once you play with one for a while, you'll want to change to a DSLR.

Pros can make full use of the 18-55 provided with the 1000D better than a newbie can do with a 1D MkIII and L lenses... so it's all up to your own skill. It takes time to learn how to make full use of a single lens - but it's worthwhile. Gives you more things to tinker around with too.

2. AF points .. yes, that is a bit of a letdown - but it's a minor thing to people who know how to control and grasp hold of their DSLRs. If you ask me I'd focus on the subject with AF (aim on the subject first), then switch to MF and fit the whole picture in.

Spot metering... I have no idea on that, while CMOS sensor vs CCD sensor... to me that's minor too.

The most important thing is that when you want to upgrade to a better DSLR body, what can you do? The a900 can hardly compare with an EOS 1D MkIII. Maybe with the 5D/50D...

Also, lenses are also quite a considering option for a DSLR. Currently Sony does not have an extensive option of lenses available to consumers - most probably due to their new entry into the DSLR market, so it's advised to stay with the big guys.

Overall, it does make a minor difference - but it can be made up with the other things Canon has to offer.

hi,kinda new in dslr.so which of those 3 camera is the most value for money??..
for nikon d60 i look around and pricing is at 1.9k.for the alpha is 1.78k..so,guys with many years experience with dslr please give me your advice..thinking of getting it the end of this month.
*
You also can choose to get the a350 for Rm2k. Anyway, try reading around for reviews - and you'll know that price is a factor that NEEDS to be considered - not to be taken like a secondary consideration. The more expensive a camera is, the better it is. (in most cases, and also in different ways)

I personally recommend you to get the 1000D or the D60. These two should serve you well as your start-off.

Where do you guys recommend to buy cameras? With good price and good service.

Me and a friend planning to buy the Panasonic LX3 together. 2 units in total. We are in KL.

Any comment on Panasonic LX3? Anyone knows the current market price? Will it be cheaper if I were to buy in Singapore? If yes, anyone knows how does the warranty go? Is it international?

Er.. I think I'm asking too much here. blush.gif

Thanks in advance. notworthy.gif

Try YL Camera. They should be able to provide you with an astounding price.

You could get a used 40D/50D set with this amount of money. Try reading around though - I don't know much about the a700 and it might be better than the 40D/50D, I have no idea.

Lowepro backpacks should serve you well. Also, what do you want to add to your setup? What do you want to use your DSLR for? Low light photography? Macro? Telephoto?

In my opinion, get the 1000D or the D60 - it'll provide you with a good start off to the DSLR world and at the same time you can accumulate lenses for the future.

D60, 1000D, a200, a350.

For prosumer, LX3, but with your budget I'd recommend you to get a DSLR.

Read the stuff I've mentioned about Sony/Canon/Nikon up there. It'll help. Also, read a few reviews to get a rough view of what's good and what's not for each DSLR.

Something with perspective? I don't really understand this. =/

Anyway, I recommend you to get a 1000D/D60 and keep the spare change for lenses later on. I don't think you should get 2 lenses at once - you'll have not enough time to learn each lens' pros and cons.

They're the same in terms of those things you mentioned.
They have almost the same image sensor size. They both have a maximum ISO of 1600.
Aperture is only affected by the lens you're using. So it has nothing to do with the camera. smile.gif

you have bold the good image quality and lesser noise.
for that reason you should throw out Sony T series.
it's only a good slim camera with average image quality.
touch screen is just for fun only.

for serious image quality, you should get a LX-3

A good photographer will not complain about the inferiority of his gear, only his creativity. (Although I frickin do sad.gif)
Seriously, how good the picture turns out to be is 90% the photographer and only 10% his gears.
If you already have your eyes on the 450D, then just get it. Or if you have the budget to go for the 40D...
What I mean is you dont have to sell off one of your kidneys just to get the 40D/D90. smile.gif
