yooo kerul, new to opensuse don't you? For the beginning I recommend you to opt for gnome as it is much easier to configure, at least for this 11.3 version.

Opensuse 11.3 is good KDE base distro. If u never use opensuse, the installer need some trick else u will format wrong partition.

For multimedia playback, just install smplayer. It will download all releven dependency codec plus more.

One thing i dont like opensuse is software manager will preselect app i never ask to install or update. Just enable pacman repo, click ok, then it want to download adobe flash, java, etc.

Opensuse 11.3 dont have pluseaudio problem like mandriva 2010.1

I wander why it still call 11.x than opensuse 14.

i prefer VLC for multimedia.
smplayer is..uh.. i hate the way it seek based on keyframe (compared to VLC's exact time seeking).

but imho opensuse partition setup is quite 'usable' and easy to understand , compared to some other distro that try to hide most of option, making it even more confusing(especially on bootloader config). rclxub.gif

I have recently made a jump to ArchLinux, after been dabbing with Ubuntu for almost 1 year. Nothing wrong with Ubuntu, just that now I feel more comfortable using rolling release based distro, everything gets updated very quickly

i think maybe linux mint debian is purely based on debian squeeze, not involved with ubuntu
so some different in command line like no need to put sudo

linux mint (with number) is 100% ubuntu compatible.
linux mint debian is 100% debian testing compatible. Mint using testing repo not squeeze repo. For now squeeze and testing repo contain same thing.

When squeeze become stable, testing will get update from unstable repo. Distro with squeeze repo will stuck with same version unless security update or bug fix. This is where backport come in or comunity backport repo like used by mepis.

why linux mint can have audio and video codec to play video, music but not ubuntu?
on ubuntu, we need to do some of apt-get update to play some media file, while on linux mint ,that not necessary,it's already comes with live packages

Linux Mint is a mix of free software and proprietary software, unlike Ubuntu which restricts itself to (mainly) free software. Most audio/video codecs that we know of have a proprietary license, in which we must install the necessary packages first to play them.

All main linux distro not support proprietary restricted codec out of box. The one support proprietary restricted codec out of box is child distro (not distro by their own) or small project like PCLinuxOS, Pardus.

I am thinking to try out Linux Mint, side by side with my current opensuse. Many reviews just too good for me to resist it.

Hi guys. Just stumble upon this forum which I thought Linux did not exist. Anyway I've been using Ubuntu since last year. Started with Ubuntu 8.10 and now using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. Everything works out of the box.

Have try other Distro on another older computer but some of them couldn't recognize my USB wifi adapter which is Aztech. It uses Ralink rt73usb driver and firmware I think. So how or where do I download the source and compile it or make it work on Debian or any Linux in general.

When we always read the top most distros like ubunto, fedora, mint or opensuse, once the great mandrake a.k.a mandriva is now dying due to financial crisis sad.gif . Back then I always admire mandrake for it's most beautiful appearance of desktop.

QUOTE
The cooker community is hot these days. A lot of Mandriva employees have announced their resignation from the Mandriva company. This is occuring as following to the death of Edge-IT (subsidary of the Mandriva firm) which was employing lots of employees working around the core of the Mandriva distribution.

The rest of the stories can be read here. Same similar articles published in distrowatch as well.

The funny thing is someone has post a bug no 60936 to mandriva's bugzilla which is rated under severity critical biggrin.gif
QUOTE
Description of problem:

After I installed the most recent version of Mandriva Linux, staff started to
leave the company. THe better the release and the more I use it, the more
people leave.

How reproducible:

Install Mandriva Linux ans wait for people to leave the company.

(I'd like to see this colsed as FIXED...)

The rest of humorous replies can be read here.

The problem with 'mandriva the company' managment is they dont care about mandriva user/comunity.
For so long malaysia not in mandriva country list.
Mandriva 2010.1 come with many KDE4 and pluseaudio bug.

The great mandriva distro will continue under unity Linux..
