QUOTE(scorps @ Jun 26 2010, 02:02 AM) for your info,Oshirix right now using debian squeeze FYI, Debian Squeeze will eventually fall into the Stable branch once Squeeze is officially released. You'll have to edit your sources.list and change the sources from "Squeeze" to "Testing" (and maybe disable any Apt pinning you have associated with Squeeze) in order for it to remain the Testing branch indefinitely. Having said that, I don't use Oshirix, so maybe the dev has already sorted the sources for you. This post has been edited by G-17: Jul 28 2010, 01:20 PM |

QUOTE(scorps @ Jul 29 2010, 11:24 AM) Is this question for me?If so; I've used Linux for a decade, so I've tried quite a lot. Red Hat, Debian, Slackware, Gentoo, Lunar, Fedora, Cent, Arch, LFS, Caldera, Craftworks, Crux ... too many to count.... also lots of BSD variants. Nowadays I'm too lazy for source based distros like Gentoo or Lunar, so I just stick to Debian, Slack, Arch or OpenBSD for most of my comps. I don't really have a preference, but I'm most comfortable with Aptitude, Portage or Pkg syntax (Arch's Yaourt always makes me feel tile typing 'yoghurt', for some strange reason) This post has been edited by G-17: Jul 29 2010, 09:50 PM |

QUOTE(scorps @ Jul 30 2010, 12:09 AM) Do you understand what you're asking? ... you expect me to write a whole paragraph?Anyways, I can't pinpoint one single bug, but most problems I've had was with Xorg (mainly from Sid or Experimental sources) My other problems/bugs are mostly Zen kernel related, so it's not directly related to Debian's development. Short answer: Biggest bug for all Malaysians (any OS) is always TM/Streamyx. |

A question to anyone who uses openSUSE.
Does anyone know whether I can install it on a hard disk without having to reformat it - if a partition out of the existing free space can be created before its installation, it would be helpful if you can link me to any how-tos. Been looking for it but I don't quite understand what needs to be done.... EDIT: Nevermind, found a solution. However I'm not too keen on doing it, maybe I'll try it some other time ._. QUOTE(G-17 @ Jul 29 2010, 07:32 PM) Is this question for me? wow...thats quite a distro-hopping..it's nice to have experience with many distros... If so; I've used Linux for a decade, so I've tried quite a lot. I don't really have a preference, but I'm most comfortable with Aptitude, Portage or Pkg syntax (Arch's Yaourt always makes me feel tile typing 'yoghurt', for some strange reason) just to clear things up, Yaourt is not Arch's official package manager..Pacman is. Of course you will feel _weird_ when using unofficial package. For new user who wants to learn and gets your hand dirty diving into linux, try to install Slackware or Debian, these are among the oldest of the old GNU/Linux distrobutions. When you're familiar with these two..later can try to install LFS, Crux.. just to name a few.. For those who just like to try linux and use it pretty much like Windows..use Ubuntu/Fedora or any Ubuntu/Fedora derivatives. Try to avoid Gentoo as much as you can.. Take note that there's no such things as distro A is better than B vice versa...it is boils down to your preference and experience only.. |

Just to repeat a question I posted in the Official Ubuntu thread:
Anyone here uses KDE 4.5 in their distro? As in upgrading your KDE into it? How's the performance? I find KWin to be lacking in performance for my laptop, which is a disappointment since I upgraded straight from 4.4.2, which handled my laptop without much problem. And yes it is a KWin-specific problem that I had to make KDE use Compiz as window manager instead; and poof the lags went away without a hitch. EDIT: It turns out that KWin's desktop effect "Blur" is the culprit behind this. No wonder la so slow one! This post has been edited by FlameReaper: Aug 16 2010, 02:39 AM |

Opensuse 11.3 is good KDE base distro. If u never use opensuse, the installer need some trick else u will format wrong partition.
For multimedia playback, just install smplayer. It will download all releven dependency codec plus more. One thing i dont like opensuse is software manager will preselect app i never ask to install or update. Just enable pacman repo, click ok, then it want to download adobe flash, java, etc. Opensuse 11.3 dont have pluseaudio problem like mandriva 2010.1 I wander why it still call 11.x than opensuse 14. |
