QUOTE(kaxhinaz @ Feb 20 2008, 12:08 AM) newbie here. between mandriva and ubuntu, which one is easier to configure? i mean which one have the least amount of tinkering to do and just work out of the box? i had installed ubuntu both in virtual and real install, and i can't seem to get it working well. how about mandriva? does it have large collections of drivers? sorry if my questions is out of topic. I would go for Ubuntu since never use mandriva before.. Ubuntu is Debian based distros with Gnome interface.. but if u want to try something i would recommend PCLinuxOS. http://www.pclos.comHave fun & good luck Added on April 5, 2008, 9:01 am QUOTE(lambertlai @ Mar 22 2008, 01:20 AM) Since U'r processor kinda at minimum level, there is not much GUI that can be run.. but u could still run Linux/Unix using the Shell (text based) command.. but U must be familiar with the *nix command.. good luck also u might want to look at Ubuntu, Knoppix, DSL, PCLOS and other distros that available on the line This post has been edited by NtahX: Apr 5 2008, 09:01 AM |

QUOTE(general_odin @ Apr 12 2008, 10:24 PM) also... able to run most windows games and apps on it... Ubuntu is fine for a start. For Windows games, you can run em' in Linux using wine. For other apps, I suggest you try to find their equivalent open source. Eg: MS Office --> OpenOffice, Adobe Photoshop-->Gimp...and something like that. Good luck~~~ |

QUOTE(dattebayo @ Apr 19 2008, 10:26 PM) In a way, I can answer yes because Ubuntu 7.10 comes with Compiz-Fussion (desktop effect) out of the box. But, with a little tinkering, other distro can have it too. Other eye-candies (icon, theme, login screen) can be downloaded corresponded with the desktop environment (Gnome, KDE, etc) QUOTE(dattebayo @ Apr 19 2008, 10:26 PM) From my experience, it's among the easiest Linux around This post has been edited by overlord_666: Apr 22 2008, 08:19 PM |

QUOTE(The_YongGrand @ Apr 22 2008, 10:00 PM) Never use Linux Mint myself, but some of my friends says that overall it's just another variant of Ubuntu (only with a couple of applications not available in Ubuntu and the multimedia codecs been installed by default). Don't know what you mean by "have limited Windows programs compatibility there" though. Is it using Windows everyday apps in it (without using the like of Wine)? |

you need internet connection for updates, else it just works fine....
It is just too easy to look for apps in ubuntu with internet connection with synaptics. |

Mandriva is pretty easy to install and use. It worked right out of the box for my PC but software selection is rather limited. You can search it yourself but Linux softwares have a lot of dependencies so you got to do some work to get everything right for you. Distros like Ubuntu have a large software repository so all the softwares come in packages, you don't have to hunt for the dependency files. But Ubuntu doesn't install well on my PC but another distro, Linux Mint which is build on Ubuntu worked for me. I strongly recommend you to try Linux Mint.Large collection of drivers? Why do you need a large collection? This post has been edited by ayob99: May 4 2008, 02:09 AM |

You mean like a Sharing Server?
Just get Debian, SuSE, Fedora, Ubuntu or something then setup Samba. |
