you can install it on a pc that already has an existing os.
linux does not accept ntfs, but you can always create a new filesystem in the partition.
cheers.

who says that linux doesn't accept ntfs? linux support read-only ntfs by default and you can use ntfs-3g (linux software or module) in order
to enable read-write ntfs in linux. It is stable. the common filesystem for linux is ext3 and reiser (for suse).

I'm using Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn running in my Dell Inspiron 1420 ~

In europe, they can buy Dell laptops with ubuntu ready inside. Check this out

http://digg.com/linux_unix/Dell_Inspiron_1...a_Rosa_Released

Ubuntu is one of distros that has many supports around the world. So it is easier for to get solutions if facing any problem.

The others are

Suse
Fedora Core
Debian
Slackware
Mandriva

Cheers ~

I was just trying to say, GNU/Linux can't be run on NTFS.
Of course it is possible to read/write to NTFS from Windows, even Windows can read/write ext3 nowadays.

How about the RAM?

You can use normal desktop ubuntu if you have more than 128mb of RAM, if not, you have to look for ubuntu alternate.

Go to ubuntu website, when you are selecting the version to download, check the box which indicate you need the "Alternate Desktop CD" version.
Normal ubuntu won't be able to run with only 64mb RAM.

I remember reading there's a driver that allows the linux to write to NTFS drives. The new Ubuntu 7.10 (out in a few days) has this installed by default (NTFS-3G).

Anyone has experience in using this?

Is there a reason why CentOS is not included in the list?

why it's corrupt? i recommend Linux Mint, well ubuntu 7.10 gutsy is my highest priority.

to Benjo, try Zenwalk (zenwalk.org) or using Ubuntu/Linux Mint with XFCE desktop manager. It's lightweight.

Sorry, but that's wrong info... Which linux are you talking about? Almost all linux distros can read and write to NTFS anf FAT... Ubuntu, Knoppix, Mandriva, FC etc...

Well it depends on you (you've heard this alot I know). your computer is pretty fast so if you have a decent card, go for something nice like Kubuntu or Knoppix with a KDE environment or even Sabayon linux.

I know some of you might be annoyed with this but I'd like to buy a book on Red Hat Linux... What's the latest Red Hat + Fedora version release?

Any book you guys can recommend for beginners? SAMs or etc?
*
lol you serious? Sorry, don't read books. I prefer to screw up the distro and experiment. Thats the best way to learn. I AM ROOT 1337!!! Lol jk...

as a newbie in UNIX-based system, am i advisible to use FreeBSD? or i'll just stick with newbie driven distro such as mandrake and SUSE? suggestion needed
*
No.. go for a mainstream linux distro like Mandriva. honestly the easiest distro for newbs is Mandriva. Second would be Ubuntu Gutsy... Mandriva has less support than Gutsy but far less hassle and trouble...
