I'm currently using xp to do a output file server. Would like to switch to Linux cos i heard tat Linux have better performance for input output server. Is it true ?

My current server is a dual core any recommend which Linux is suitable for this input output server ? Currently using dual gigabits LAN to provides all the clients need. (Im new to Linux)
