newbie here. between mandriva and ubuntu, which one is easier to configure? i mean which one have the least amount of tinkering to do and just work out of the box? i had installed ubuntu both in virtual and real install, and i can't seem to get it working well. how about mandriva? does it have large collections of drivers? sorry if my questions is out of topic.
*
Mandriva is pretty easy to install and use. It worked right out of the box for my PC but software selection is rather limited. You can search it yourself but Linux softwares have a lot of dependencies so you got to do some work to get everything right for you. Distros like Ubuntu have a large software repository so all the softwares come in packages, you don't have to hunt for the dependency files. But Ubuntu doesn't install well on my PC but another distro, Linux Mint which is build on Ubuntu worked for me. I strongly recommend you to try Linux Mint.

Large collection of drivers? Why do you need a large collection?

If Gnome too heavy, use XFCE , much lighter. If you're willing to tweak, Fluxbox is nice.

Amarok can run on Gnome Desktop (which is Ubuntu default desktop maanager) too but if you want a KDE based Ubuntu, get Kubuntu.

what's the best movie player for ubuntu? especially to play mkv high definition movies...
*
What kind of error? Didn't have problems with mine.

mkv files? Use MPlayer or VLC but make sure you got the gstreamer codecs installed.

duno this is a right thread or not

i plan to install ubuntu on my gf's laptop which is win xp..but i worried tht ubuntu cant install ms office..any idea about it?
*
You won't be able to run MS Office on Ubuntu, you can try using wine to run it but I have never tried that myself. Most Linux distros includes OpenOffice for your word processing and financial spreadsheets requirement and it is compatible with MS Office documents.
