i?86 refers to normal computer system which uses 32 bit, iX86_64 refers to a system using 64 bits and PPC is for Power PC (the previous Apple computer's processor).

Most of the distro don't support windows network n share folders natively, you'll have to install samba for linux to communicate with windows network. There are some distro which installs Samba by default.

There have been way too many of these threads lately, and somehow nobody wants to ask the question in one common thread; so here is one.

Distro Home Page
Debian
Fedora
Gentoo
Knoppix
Lycoris
Mandrake
Mandriva
SlackWare
SUSE
Trustix Secure
TurboLinux
Ubuntu

Download links
Redhat 1.0 to 9.0

Additional info
Threads like which linux to choose and related stuff will be merged into this pinned thread.

Cheers

I thought you just need samba to work with Windows regardless of the distro.
No?

I would love windows to work with Samba but with the ubuntu 8.04 install everytime i open samba in it ubuntu tells me the sucker crashes. So i gotta first work with that.

I once got Mint 3 to work.. i could see all the files access them etc. But on reboot I can't anymore.... its freaking killing me.

Dude I am done looking. I was looking for nearly ten days for the solution. Am not looking for another 'solution' if someone has a clear cut method just state it. Cuz all those worthless sites assume it naturally works all the damn time and don't have 'if installation fails or samba fails to start' help.

Hi all linux sifu,

I have been working on open source php, cgi, pl and sql scipt on my windows machine and then need to upload the files to the Linux server all the times using an internet connection to get the output.

I recently purchase a new cpu. Kindly recommend me a good linux OS for my scripting without requiring me to connect the internet at home. I would like to know the output immediately on my linux machine. Once the output is working fine, I would upload the final scripting and sql to the real linux server.

Also, I would like to install vmware/ virtual pc on this linux machine as well.

I'm thinking of installing the fedora. Would fedora able to do the tasks I mention above? Hope to hear the feedback from you all. Thx.

Of course. You have to run vmware/xen on the Fedora.
Virtual PC is only meant for Windows platform.

Probably you would need apache to be installed in the Fedora as well.
Which SQL are you using? psql? mysql?
Either one, it's available under Fedora too.

The mirror seems to be down from here, for 5 days now.
Anyway, the url seems to be correct if you can access the site from there.

Thx kons. I guess it would be better to buy the linux CD (Fedora 9) with apache as well coz the files are just too huge. Anyone have the latest version where it is 100% workable? Coz I do not want to crash my new cpu when installing the new OS from unknown source. The base is very important. Please help. Many thx

It would not crash your cpu even if the iso files are corrupted, don't worry.
The installation would just freeze.
Then probably the only way is to re-install.

Or of course if you can find a reasonably priced DVD/CD, then it's good to buy too.
