this is a pure newbie question. but since can't find anywhere in the forum, i'd like to ask,  which distro/version is suitable for an old and slow machine? < 1.0ghz and 128mb ram. any recommendation for linux distro that will run at smoothly?
*
Hey there.
If you have a lot of patience, sure, we can run any of the distro above.
All the PC here at my site are running at the speed less than 1ghz and ram = 128 ghz, some of them are running FC3, some running Centos...
It is running quite smooth too.. I must say..

can i ask.. how to install windows + SUSE 9.3
i choose expert mode in pertition.
and .. wanna change that linux swap ??
*
Err. I don't really get you.
What do you mean?
You mean the size of the swap?
Or.. location of the swap?

Usually the size of the swap space is double the amount of RAM. But nowadays most of us have like 1GB of RAM so double the amount of RAM is not necessary anymore.

From now on, those "which distro to choose" threads, if left dangling somewhere in the subforum, it will be merged in here, as soon as I see one.

Encouraging the use of pinned threads.

Cheers.

Sorry i don't quite understand... if i have 3 partition , 30GB(window xp ) , 10GB (free fat32) and 40GB (free NTSF).
If i want to install to my second partition 10GB ? how do i install ?
What is ext3 ? why do i need to allocate 100mb for New partition # ? and what is  a swap partition ?
Sorry , i am totally new , just downloaded ubuntu 6.10 cd version.
*
The installer will prompt you for a partition to install.
ext3 is a journalling filesystem.
swap? simple definition would be virtual memory.

Well, from my experience of looking in the configurations of most linux servers..
swap partition size is the double of the ram size...

i combined it with ubuntu

such a great package debian have 14cds

hmm.gif

great because of having 14 cds?

I guess those distro with 10000000 cds would make you drop your jaws?

Why not start telling us the reason debian is such a great package?

If want to learn about server in linux, which distro is suitable? I am used to Win Server and Mac OS Server, but only know little about linux server, I ask some expert some said Fedora some said SuSe.. What s your suggestion?
*
Well, actually, the best way is to try it out yourself.
If you do not like that, can always reinstall other distro.
Until you have find the one which you like.
It's not that difficult, ya know.

hi dude, total open source OS, Linu/Unix super noob here.
all the while with MS, even development also all MS (.NET, SQL)  blush.gif

so, i heard you talking about Virtual PC, I just installed that and the intention is to try some other OS on my virtual PC.

so far after reading the post here and there, here's the rank I got.

1. Ubuntu, SuSE, PCLinuxOS (Windows like, can install apps without much hasle)
2. Knoppix (runs off the CD)
3. DSL Linux (can run on P1, 32MB)

please advice which distro I should start with which I can get on with my life like those days when I have Windows smile.gif

I dont want to get my hand dirty under the hood yet.. appreciate your advice!
*
Which Virtual PC are you using?
For linux installation, I would suggest going with VMWare.

I manage to get the graphic right after select
- Install in safe graphic mode

[attachmentid=169343]

I am using Virtual PC 2004, coz MS make it free now smile.gif
i might want to try VMWare if its something better than virtual PC.

i felt asleep last night, this morning when i woke up. the installation is done, and need a reboot. during the reboot i saw that it failed to STOP the RAID driver.
but later on it manage to boot into the OS, and I leave it to run 63 latest update.

so excited to play it around after work, err...where can i found application like MSN for Ubuntu? is there something like this? or i am asking something silly? smile.gif
*
Glad you made it working.
Last time I tried Virtual PC 2004 with RHEL3 R7, it doesn't work.
Sheeesh.

Failing to RAID driver is not really an issue unless you are really utilizing raid in your drive.

MSN for Ubuntu.. Hmm.. GAIM?

How about using scp?
I always do that when transferring files between linux and windows.
Setting up samba is just taking too much time and it isn't worth the effort if we are just using it for file sharing, samba is meant for task like pdc or something equivalent to that.

hi guys, thanks for the info. I will try out the long Samba installation later.
now, I want to install BT Downloader, I had downloaded the installer in something .tar.bz2

here's the simple instruction I got from the site:
1.  Extract the archive.
2. Check README to ensure you have all of the required dependencies installed. Unfortunately, the configure script is not too intelligent at the moment.
3. ./configure
4. make
5. make install (as whatever user you need to be)

please advice on how this work? where is ./configure?
what is make?
sorry if this is too noob. thanks...
*
You just need to bunzip and untar it. (means extract it)
Check and readme file in the directory where you have extracted the contents and see if all the .so files or other dependencies has been installed.
Type ./configure in the same directory.
Type make and then make install.

This is a common compilation procedure for most Linux program..
Usually further parameters can be passed into it using ./configure command.

hi kons, thanks for the help. unfortunately, it failed at steps 3 (Type ./configure in the same directory).
this is what I got:

admin@bob-Ubuntu:~/Desktop/BTDownload/gnome-btdownload-0.0.27$ ./configure
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking for gawk... no

checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... no
checking whether to enable maintainer-specific portions of Makefiles... no
checking for style of include used by make... none
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cl.exe... no
configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH
See `config.log' for more details.

and attached is the config.log

thanks smile.gif
*
so you did not install any c compilers?
gcc?
apt-get it.
you need that at least to be able to to run make scripts.

where's the attached config.log?

Seems like the configure script did not do what it's supposed to do.
Did the configure command gave any output?

newbie in ubuntu linux here,
i wanted to get my hands on ubuntu
currently running XP,
can I have XP and Ubuntu installed into the same HDD drive and select to boot which 1 from the boot menu?

How can I do that?
*
Sure it is possible.
But you need to define a partition for each operating system.

Hai, may I know that the Linux ver 9 system can support SATA / SATA II drive or? Or it is just for SCSI cable?

I tried in SATA can not successfully install. Does it mean it can be only install in Server PC?
*
It depends on the SATA chipset being used.
AFAIK, ICH5/ICH5R SATA can be detected by RH 7.3

Any distro would do.
Just simply pick any and just change if you don't like it.
It takes time to appreciate it.
