Went to try Gobo Upstairs (also specializes in steak) in Trader's Hotel, with the GF. Didn't bring my dslr so not gonna blog about it, she had filet mignon, i had rib-eye-on-bone, 500g, pictured here:

According to tripadvisor it's the #2 restaurant in KL, which in my opinion is way overrating it.
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g29...ersekutuan.html

For starters, the ambience is only so-so. The choice of dinnerware is also poor as the plate slides around the table super easy (which makes it frustrating to eat steak cos you're always cutting and the plate is always sliding around).

The steaks themselves had inconsistent seasoning. one mouthful would be nice and juicy, the next felt like putting a teaspoon of salt in my mouth. if you like to be "adventurous" with your food then you might be interested, but I find that a mouthful of salt does wonders in ruining your tastebuds for the rest of the meal.

The worst part about it was the price. $270 for both of us (1soup 1salad 2non-'gourmet beef' steaks) is damn expensive - even more expensive than Prime, where (admittedly after starwoood 50% discount) everything is better and yet dinner for 2 can comfortable come in under $200.

Would not come back again.

I had been to Victoria Station once and ate their Bombay Steak that was aweful. Today I headed for Uncle Chilis in Hilton at 10:30 just to find that there is a cover charge, so crossed the road and headed to Victoria Station PJ. Scared from my last experience, but yet having no choice, I ordered Ribeye. The steak came in a pool of juice, but was extremely juicy... so I was a bit confused as why is there so much water drained (usually happens when steak is not rested) and yet it is juicy, so I asked the waiter and he told me that they pour extra juice on top of steak to keep it moist... wierd explaination, but I must say that the steak was really up to my expectation at RM 54 for 200g. The service was good, and we ordered Ox-tail and Lamb steak, that were both nice as well.
So I have forgiven Victoria today for their last bad experience hehe and updating my verdicts...

No 1. Gaucho Grill (try their T Bone or Tenderloin, ask them to bring the sauce separate)
No 2. Suzie Corner (tenderloin at RM 32, a total value for money, ask them to bring sauce separate)
No 3. Alexis (i frequent Garden's branch) and their steaks are soft and yummy and side items superb (tried ther Wagyu, nothing special)
No 4. Tony Roma's Wagyu (their normal steaks are tough, but their Wagyus are absolutely worth, RM 99)
No 5. Maredo's (quite big portions, i was absolutely full after i finished eating, but poor customer service)
No 6. Victoria Station (Ribeye, RM 54, 200g, does not include any sauce, but comes with salad, grilled vege, baked potato and corn)
No 7. Laman Grill (Tenderloin. Recommend eating their short ribs as they are better)
No 8. Las Vacas (Angus Ribeye RM 28 per 100g, down side is that meat is not marinated hence very superficial taste)
No 9. Castell's Ribeye Steak (the beef ribs sucked big time, so no verdict for that)
No 10. Daily Grind - Ribeye Steak (good quality meat, please ask them to keep the sauce separate, in love with their burgers)
No 11. Monte's Bangsar (salt-less, tasteless, but tender steak)

Added on February 21, 2011, 5:52 pmWent to TGI Fridays yesterday and ordered their Ribeye. Similiar to Vic Stat I was expecting a mediocre steak, but it seems the meat quality has improved in Malaysia. Their 283 gm Ribeye priced at 49.90 was quite worth it, much same as Vic Station, only that they are RM 5 cheaper and the meat weight is more.

I may sound insane but the last two experiences have left me in a state of disbelief.

Went to Jakes Grill damansara. Everyone has praised it so far, but we ordered T Bone Steak and I found the food to be mediocre. Yes, I did not select the best meat on the menu, but spending RM 70+ per steak, I would expect its quality to match Victoria Station or Tony Roma, but nope.

Second and the most shocking was Prime last night. I ordered Blackmore Wagyu ribeye... should have been the melt in the mouth right with 9 marbling score (as they advertised) ... believe me I could not cut the meat with the knife (medium done-ness) and I had to chew and chew to make sure I dont get choked on it. On one piece i actually had to give up and spit it out. I told the waiteress and she told me that she can cook it a bit more. But hey I was eating medium done-ness not rare?
The service was excellent. The starter breads (especially the one topped with cheese) were out of the world good. The soups (mushroom and lobster bisque) were ok, crab cakes were ok too, but the steak was totally unacceptable.
I am going to visit Prime one more time in future because I cant just figure out how people call it the best steak in KL? Does some one share my experience? Please tell me what went wrong?

PS: I am so so happy to find this blog that talks exactly what I said: http://diaryofahedonist.blogspot.com/2011/...n-hotel-kl.html
Prime has gone down the drain I think, wrong time for me to buy the Starwood membership sad.gif

It has been 2-3 month since my last visit to Prime. You should highlight their manager about this case. I suggest you make an official complaint through their facebook and email their FnB Director. You can PM me if you need email address.

whao, just went to prime last nite and its like that huh

i am going there tonite, and i seriously hope its not like that sad.gif

Added on March 20, 2011, 10:08 pmPutra and all others.

I just back from Prime. And I am really really disappointed with it sad.gif

Okay, the bread is great, the lobster bisque is awesome, and the foie gras is good too

so here come the steaks

my gf opt for the Master Kobe Oyster Blade Steak (8oz 220gm) @ RM130 medium

while I opt for their cheapest blackmore promotion @ RM98, what blackmore wagyu blah one, also medium

and it's amazingly disappointing! When the manager ask me how is my meat, i straight complain its bad, as it's too chewy, and some part i can't even cut with my knife, and when i bite, i have to just swallow it!

The manager go on and ask my choice of meat, and tell me the one i choose is 2nd grade, hence it won't melt in mouth

but when i show him the piece of meat i can't cut, and tell him that my meat is medium done, he straight away say he will change my meat for me, to a premium one.

After like 15 mins, my new cut of meat is here.

it was changed to medium rare blackmore wagyu chuck flap tail @ RM180

however, to be honest, it's still disappointing. It doesnt melt in my mouth, and i find that it's shud be rare rather than medium rare, as the middle part of the meat seems to be totally uncook.

Yes, the service is good, and i doesn't even need to pay for the premium cut to taste it, but i still find that it does not help anything since i feel that it doesn't taste as good.

the blackmore wagyu chuck flap tail doesn't seems to worth to me, but with this kind of service, yes i gona give them another try in the near future, but until someone tell me quality of food in Prime is back into business

isit really becoz i don't know how premium steak shud taste like or what? Prime makes me really wanted to try Qba for tomorrow , since i still got the RM50 voucher with me....

PS: the starwood card looks marvellous now biggrin.gif

Wow...second person vows same opinion about Prime. I'm really have no idea nowadays. Should revisit again. What I can advise is make an official email to their director. Qba quality also dropped based on my last visit 2 weeks ago. Quality of meat, service etc etc has something wrong.

@Samlee

Blackmore wagyu should be melt in mouth if they cook it well and medium rare or rare is a way to go. Allow 5 minutes after they served to you, as quality of this meat are superior, it shouldn't have any bleeding. I tried Blackmore on their 1st promotion and I don't have any doubt of it. For this round of promotion where they bring Blackmore again, I don't have time yet to revisit. The best so far I have taste at prime was Centre Fillet Mignon Master Kobe. As the cut very important, try to take finest cut as possible tongue.gif

ahh...finest cut eh...hm...

but seriously, i am really disappointed lo, i wish to try once more (either prime again or Qba) before i back to kedah tongue.gif

If the steak itself are well aged and well rested, the blood should not be coming. Yes, I'm always allow 5 minutes after they served before I eat. Prime has more varieties of meat if compared to Qba.
