xtorm and jazzy,

I re-looked at prices of capacitors dielectric at RS Compo and Farnell again and I sort of decided to go for Vishay BC Components 2222370 series (Belgium made) instead of Wima MKS2 (Germany made) because of price factor. Just Vishay caps are much cheaper and made in PRC.

As I don’t have any knowledge how Vishay polyester caps would sound, I goggled for some general idea and found this: "…… as observed with Mundorf caps before, Vishay poly caps have a sense of weight and texture behind the notes, especially in the midrange that keeps music interesting and captivating over longer-term listening. …"

Are both of you comfortable with my choice ?  Costs / person =
- 0.1uF 63V 10% capacitance tolerance, 1.17 x 10 = RM11.70
(qty ordered to be multiple of 10, so each of us need to take 10)
- 0.47uF 63V 10% capacitance tolerance, 2.64 x 20 / 3 = RM16.20 (6pcs) / RM18.30 (7pcs)

Total of RM27.90 / RM30.00 per person, tentative delivery time by next Thursday as Farnell stocks are in UK. Agreeable by all ?
Jazzy,

I PMed you and xtorm prices of Wima MKS2 today. xtorm claimed he didn’t receive the 1st time; if you did kindly ignore them as the 0.1uF caps are with capacitance tolerance of 20% and as for 0.47uF caps from RS Compo, we need to wait between 5 - 8 working days for stocks to arrive from UK too and both the prices have yet to factor in the extra pcs we need to absorb due to qty ordered in multiple of 5.
xtorm,

ok, I’ll see you later today. I found Vishay BC Components 20K ohm resistors at Farnell at RM0.42 each so you need not bring the Multicomp resistors along with you.
*
go go go...

really appreciate the good effort!! thumbup.gif
rm30 each person for so many pieces of cap is fair enough...but wait a minute...i got 2 boards, soon to be 3, hmmmm...
ill try with 1set 1st to see if the changes are worth it, but i think it will turn out nicely

btw 0.1uf i tot we need max of 7?

are those 20k 1%? or better? mayb ill take 12 pieces too....smile.gif

mysghooi,
Sure I can get you one.. there's more from where I got them! biggrin.gif Send by post?
Yes. All you need is an ac power cord connected to the terminals marked "L" & "N".

One of the reasons why I resorted to SMPS was the unavailability of 12V 3A regulator kits @ JP. The last of the stocks was snapped up by another LYN forumer after he saw my bench PSU, also doing some power supply projects tongue.gif He bought the last 3!

ongbs,
Yes it IS! Other shops are selling it at RM80! laugh.gif
That particular shop is the exception. I was haggling to lower it to RM50! Would have got it if the 'towkey' was around.
Guess I was lucky.. brows.gif

xtorm,

Hehe, RM30 because I'm not even after 1 sen of profit and since 3 of us pool, we could divide qty (multiple of 5) between us. tongue.gif

We only need 7 pcs 0f 0.1uF caps but the item is sold in multiple of 10, so if we take 20, one of us is short of 1, how? rclxub.gif
Hey, wait a minute, did I make a mistake? Now I see it's in multiple of 5 here: capacitors, so our costs even lower now as we need to buy 25 pcs and divide by 3 (29.25 / 3) = RM9.38 (8 pcs) / RM10.49 (9 pcs) thereabout.

Yes, the 20k ohm Vishay BC Components Metal Film resistors are with tight tolerance of +/- 1% See here: resistors.
You want me to include 12 pcs into our order for you?

jazzy,

Could I find out from you name of shop to pick up your smps?

xtorm, jazzy, this Mean Well is quite a famous Taiwanese brand (value to money) in industrial grade SMPS, that is why I said RM55 is a bargain.

This SMPS should be industrial grade, not just mean for DIYers, I used some of their 24V SMPS in industrial PLC control environment back to 1996,
working fine in 7/24 non air-cond and dusty environment (even in India) .... smile.gif

Those cap palang PC PSU really can't compare with this brand.

ongbs,
Thank you for the info! I was not aware of this brand at all! Looks like I really got lucky eh! laugh.gif
I have seen other brands in JP.. all running at 3 figures prices! shakehead.gif

I thought earlier wanted to use some spare PC PSU for this purpose, glad that I didn't. Won't do justice to our little marvel.. biggrin.gif
Oh BTW, it came with a ONE YEAR Warranty! thumbup.gif

Just got some info/data on the model that I bought. Interesting!
The MTBF is 408.3K hrs minimum!
Inrush current max is 36A for 230VAC.
78% efficiency.
Max ripple and noise is 100mVp-p
Voltage adjust range 10.8~13.2V
<--- looks like I will be setting to the MAX. yeay! laugh.gif
Load regulation +- 0.5%

What do you think of these specifications?

it is 24V 2.1A version, close to 200 bucks that time.

BTW, note the "V Adj" trimmer? It can be adjusted around 10% of the output voltage (11V to 13V+) thumbup.gif

added:

some of my audio gears for T-amp test, sorry for the blurry image due to shaky hand and flash off (so you can se the nice display) doh.gif biggrin.gif

That 24V MW SMPS with me 10yrs without power ON, still virgin brows.gif brows.gif brows.gif doh.gif doh.gif doh.gif
May dig out another one or two units more, if my wife didn't throw it away lah! sweat.gif
