QUOTE(woopypooky @ Aug 12 2008, 01:48 PM) ermm... its engineering job for fresh graduate; salary dunno yet. where is your hometown?.. seriously singapore/jb are really nice place to live i wanna consider these 3:- 1. work at hometown rm1800 (everything free of course; plus can drive car to work, give parents rm300) 2. work at singapore and stay at johor (4 hours transport each day, rent room, transport fee, also give parents rm300) 3. work at singapore and stay at singapore. (will save transport time, but take all 3 meals in singapore, also give parents rm300) my parents still working so giving them is optional, although i would like to. -4 hours is average, if u can find a strategic place, jb-singapore only took ~1 hour only... if u go to work by bus, thats another story cus u probably wasting your time at bus stop at least u need a bike. thats for sure. |

Well i'm working in Jb, the food price basically is same(don't convert here and there la). But i personally feel its cheaper in SG.
Example in Malaysia , you earn RM2k, food is around RM4~6 per meal. In Singapore you earn SGD2k, one meal around SGD3~5. Other daily used products such as soap, toothpaste, etc....all also cheaper, if you don't convert la. Levis jeans cost less than SGD100. In malaysia u earn 2k and levis jeans nearly RM200. However other 'services' and entertainment places will cost more. Nice and decent restaurants really cost hell alot more even without the conversion. Hmm..other than that, a room in SG is really cost a lot, and transportation expenses will be quite high and compulsory. The last i heard was around SGD400 for one single room. Well this also depends on which area you are. And they are very strict to overnight visitors. hahaha... Well in terms of saving money, that depends on your priorities. Just for thoughts, if you will earn the same ammount in Msia and Sg (RM2k in Malaysia and SGD2k in SG), and you can save 10% of your earnings. At the end of the day, which will be better? However this really depends on your nature of work. If your work is does not require 'networking/socialing' activities, then you still can consider travelling JB-SG everyday. Just oppinion, feel free to comment. |

I'm new to this post. So what was the conclusion? I'm starting work at Singapore soon and I would also like to know information on this. If it is not that bad, I would like to commute daily to Singapore from JB.

Few years back when i was staying in JB it only took me 45mins to reach my office when i'm on shift.Added on May 31, 2010, 10:38 pm QUOTE(skon9 @ May 31 2010, 10:12 PM) think sgd400-sgd600 for single stayThis post has been edited by Mackiddo: May 31 2010, 10:38 PM |

QUOTE(seantang @ Aug 10 2008, 12:51 PM) My advice is stay in Singapore, if you want to work in Singapore. Good points Bro !!To me, it's definitely not worth spending 4-5 hours a day commuting to & fro, just to save a few hundred dollars. Like pubee said, if that small sum makes such a difference to your financial situation, then perhaps it's not worth it to work in Sg. If your new job pays OT, you could use the few hours a day you save (if you stay in Sg) to work extra and get more money. Or you can spend that time learning a new skill or furthering your studies. Or just spend it destressing. Nothing is more wasteful than time spent commuting. Which part of Sg will the new job be? If it's on the edge of the island somewhere eg. Changi, Jurong, Tuas, Woodlands, Boon Lay, Punggol etc... then staying at these non-central areas is significantly cheaper. Even if your office is at Orchard or the CBD, you can save money by staying farther away. Just spend a little more time on the MRT, but it'll be nowhere as much as going through the causeway. You can rent a room in a HDB flat from $100-900. Varies greatly depending on location, proximity to MRT, amenities, aircond, attached toilet and class of flat (executive hdb, larger flats, smaller flats, neighbours etc. foreign workers, locals or expats, blue or white collar etc). And if you can find someone to share a room, your rental is halved. I totally agree with what you said, as travelling a few hours everyday is torturing !! |

I move to SG to work since end of last year. work in jurong and also stay in jurong. so my 2 cents worth opinions;
- price for real estate is damn crazy high. be it room, hdb flat or private condo. - u can get cheap room around SGD 400 - SGD 800 at hdb flat with you-dont-know-who. sharing all the things inside the house and most sublet is illegal. means if hdb ppl pay a visit for inspection make sure u r hiding. show ur face only if you know ur name is listed as subtenant. hint: if u r on work permit u surely do not want to do anything that can cause ur permit to be revoked. - i shared before and i learned my lesson. I have a psychopath housemate. So i moved n rent 1+1 room hdb flat that cost me sgd1600/month. rent + bills = almost sgd2k/month. and we r talking hdb not a nice luxury condo! -im working during office hour and use public transport. transportation per month cost me sgd 150-200 (i used combination of mrt, bus and sometimes taxi) -i ate at my office canteen most of the time so rice+2 dishes+veg including drinks its around sgd4- sgd4.50. and eat at home for dinner. -for me sg cost of living is very high. with my income i can live a comfortable life in malaysia, can afford whatever i want to eat or buy. but in sg, i live a life where i need to slash whatever thing that is less priority and always think how to save money. its tiring. -so after asking other malaysian senior at my office, i research here n there, i planned to moved to jb after my rental contract end and commute everyday to jb. -previously i work in kl, and bad traffic is normal. going back home from office at klcc to ampang kosas can cost u an hour or more. which by fact without traffic it only take 10-15 min. and traffc in sg is not bad. car is still moving even though its slow. and bear in mind...it doesnt took 4 hrs from sg to jb..im not sure why in this forum thy say it is 4-5 hrs. even if u, use bus during peak hours it took u 2 hrs. but this is rarely. maybe happen during holiday season or shortage of bus. mostly 1-1.5 hr. however in the end of the day it all depends on u. what is ur real reason to work in sg. and decide which is the best. for me, it becoz of the experience, the money, and i want to exposed my self to varieties. so why care for the hardships if you get more pros then cons eventually... |

I would like to stay in either at Gelang Patah of Uda and commute daily by motorbike. I also always here ppl say it takes hours but never hearing from somebody who actually does it. So I want to try for myself first. Anybody know a motorbike rental service at JB? |

Most people do not work in Woodlands or Jurong, along those bus routes and nor do they live next to the Causeway bus terminal in JB. If you work in the CBD, it already takes an hour to get there from Woodlands and Tuas. I used to get off the overnight express bus from Ipoh at Woodlands checkpoint and make my way to Orchard to go to work. That takes an hour minimum without fail. And that's assuming your office is near the MRT stn or bus stop. |

i think the nearest location would be bukit indah.
there is cw3 bus to take u to jurong. waiting time is 20min interval. go jb custom then go sg custom. u need to drop down 2 times. one trip probably takes 1.5hours (depends also on volume of ppl lining up ) non SG PR checkpoint is vyvyvy slow compare to SG PR checkpoint. The average travelling time from bukit indah to jurong approx ~ 1.5hours THAT ALONE will just land you in JURONG. if u need to travel to your office destination, cost a little more time ? -------------------------------------------- some ppl will save tat amount to money to stay in JB. (sacri time ) some ppl will jz rent room in SG. ( sacri money ) unless u ppl gt better pay in SGD then only go SG work. i hv a fren working in palace of golden horses. gt job in SG for only 1200SGD. travel my motorbike cost SGD 4/day. stay in SG share room SGD250/mth. u ppl decide the conclusion. |

This thread is really informative. Thanks everyone. I just moved in to a 2+1 hdb flat in ang mo kio. The rent is unbelievably high it makes me want to consider renting in JB and commute daily to work. my work place is by Raffles Place MRT station. i m not familiar with either jb or sg. I ve heard daily commute during peak hours is really bad, but since a lot of people are doing it, I thought maybe it is not as bad as it sounds??? I have to be at Raffles Place MRT station by 8:20AM (as it takes roughly 10 minutes to walk to my office from the train station). So by what time do i have to leave for work? Would really appreciate any tips/comments from anyone. Thanks a lot. cheers!
