for the details, it mentioned the rosemary only needs 1 year for the tree to be ready as a bonsai material from seed. but only last for 30 years.

Hi Waichun,

If I'm not mistaken, your trees are Chinese Elm imported from China.
The first photo of your tree can be an awesome bonsai if you know how to carve the big main trunk probably.
But your major problem now is to get them back to life.
Chinese Elm is a tough tree, once it got use to the climate here they should be growing very fast.
Since you said that you re-pot your trees 3 weeks ago and are drying up.
Usually bonsai trees in this kind of condition could be problem with their roots.
You could have over prune the roots or the soil mix has got bacterial causing root diseases.
I suggest you change the soil mix (use new soil 1:1 coconut fiber black soil and red burnt soil)
Wash the roots with water jet and replant them.
Place in half sun condition until new shoots appear. Then place them in full sun conditions. Absolutely no fertilizer at this stage.
A lot of Chinese Elm can be found at the nurseries in Sg Buloh just like this one

Attached Image they are more like in live or die condition.

Best of luck to your Chinese Elms

If I'm not mistaken, rosemary is a template climate plant.
The chances of surviving in our climate could be slim.
But no harm buying the seed and try out.

Hi all,

I'm a relatively new active bonsai enthusiast. I've liked bonsai since my schooling days. Had a few trees through the years, but sadly not enough focus patience and dedication, so the trees never made it.

In 2010 my interest in bonsai revived when I started propagating some South African seeds of what we call the camel thorn tree for the purpose of making them into bonsai. The end of 2012 I started active work on some of the young trees. That is where the bonsai "bug" really bit me and turned into a passion.
For the last 3 months I've just spent collecting tree material an educating myself in the techniques of bonsai. I did some initial first styling of some of the trees I thought could handle it.

I found this forum while searching for places to buy bonsai supplies(wire, soil, etc.). I'm really glad I did as none of my friends are into bonsai. So there is no one to share my passion with. I just spent 2 hours reading this entire thread and am glad to join you all.

So, now there are 5.

Ill post some pictures of my material and work soon.

Today is my Saturday off day. ( I got to work on alternate Saturday)
That means It's another bonsai day for me. And so I decided to do some maintenance to
some bonsai materials and garden plants at one corner of my garden. It's also a pre Chinese
New Year tidy up of the area.

All the plants at this corner have been left for a couple of years without doing any maintenance.
Lots of hard brushing works to do.. sweat.gif doh.gif

This seven footer out side my fence.... I've decided to put it in a bbbig pot.

The gears use to dig it up from the ground without hurting much of it's roots. icon_idea.gif

There's no fix time, as the tree grows, u shape it, grows and shape again.
If you prefer to have a small size bonsai, then grow it in a small pot, change soil
mix after 1-2 years, cut away some roots and put in back to the same pot and let it
con't that way. 5 yrs, 10 yrs ...... rolleyes.gif

Hi Infrasonic,

How's your Buddha pine now? Re-potted?

I've a suggestion for you. You can shape it like those landscape Buddha pines found planting along the road side shoulder or at the middle of round about.
Make a S shape, tie at the point where the tree trunk touches the stick. Cut or leave the branches as you like. Simple and fast, an initial bonsai
shape is done.
Something like this.

Great Bonsai. Personally, i love to plant bonsai too. mine not so big one. the max is 1.5 ft due to place constraint.

for my bonsai, i adopt microspray misting system and drip system which help me to save watering my plants. you guys using any watering system? trying to share Hydromate Irrigation System. visit: www.hydromateirrigation.com
