BONSAI in tradition style
The birthplace of bonsai was China and the word bonsai derived from the Chinese word pun-sai. (Anybody interested in the history timeline can check on the internet – Chinese history bonsai timeline.)
The early shapes of Chinese bonsai with sparse foliages gnarled trunks resemble those of Chinese building like the pagoda, animal like the dragon (Chinese like dragon anyway), dancing fairy, aged pine trees that grown on the side of steep rocky mountains and hills. Aired roots and cascading were also very much favored among the early days. These shape although simple but they have their self refinement. Up to today the early Chinese bonsai shaping is still highly prized. There are also “Ying” and “Yang” in Chinese bonsai. “Ying” means feminine and “Yang” means male or the benevolent dragon. Further to all these, each pot of bonsai is given a name, a phase or even a poem to enhance its look.
During the Chinese culture revolution (1966-1976) Chinese antiques, historical sites and culture suffered devastating damages. However the knowledge of cultivating bonsai never died. After the revolution, the Chinese started back their old art of bonsai cultivation again. In the early 90s Chinese began their large scales farming of many types of bonsai, and at the end of the decade exports of Chinese live bonsai plants to many parts of the world began. Among the most common species the Chinese exported are ficus, gensing ficus, fukkien tea, Chinese elm etc. To most people the Chinese mass production bonsai are unhealthy, full of wire scarring, badly chopped trunk that can never recovered, simple and weird looking in some ways. However these bonsai are cheap and very affordable. During the late 90s Chinese traders selling mass production bonsais in Malaysia can be commonly found in the open car parks of many shopping malls. The easy availabilities and cheap Chinese bonsais had actually sparked off the bonsai interests of many people in this country.
The followings are some photos of my traditional shape bonsais for your viewing pleasure. The photos are not so well taken but hope you enjoy watching them.
