Hi all,

I'm a relatively new active bonsai enthusiast. I've liked bonsai since my schooling days. Had a few trees through the years, but sadly not enough focus patience and dedication, so the trees never made it.

In 2010 my interest in bonsai revived when I started propagating some South African seeds of what we call the camel thorn tree for the purpose of making them into bonsai. The end of 2012 I started active work on some of the young trees. That is where the bonsai "bug" really bit me and turned into a passion.
For the last 3 months I've just spent collecting tree material an educating myself in the techniques of bonsai. I did some initial first styling of some of the trees I thought could handle it.

I found this forum while searching for places to buy bonsai supplies(wire, soil, etc.). I'm really glad I did as none of my friends are into bonsai. So there is no one to share my passion with. I just spent 2 hours reading this entire thread and am glad to join you all.

So, now there are 5.

Ill post some pictures of my material and work soon.

Camel Thorn Tree - can't wait to see how it looks like and eagle to know how you got it !  drool.gif

Ill post some pics of all my trees soon(can't call any of them bonsai yet) then you can see the "camel thorn". I think it is a variety of acacia.

Well, I'm actually from South Africa, but living here in Malaysia. Some years ago I asked my dad to bring me some seeds of indigenous SA trees. So I grew my camel thorns from seeds.

This is a picture of one big camel thorn in the wild. That is the look ill be going for in my bonsai version.Attached Image

Hi everyone,

As promised, here are some pics of what I have in terms of bonsai. I am only a beginner but eager to learn and experiment.

My bench:

My "camel thorn" (acacia erioloba) trees:
All grown from seed:

The beginnings of my attempt at windswept style (fukinagashi):
(No idea what tree this is)

Attached Image

My junipers (don't know which variety):

First 2 bought as bonsai from nursery. ( not good quality, had deep wire cuts and the branching is on wrong side of trunk curve. My itchy hands just wanted some material to work on. RM 25 each)
One I have cleaned up and refined a bit, the other still needs to be. We'll see how they develop.

My Juniper work in progress. I prefer working from raw materials:

Now:
(I'm air layering the middle stump to become another juniper bonsai project.)

Here's a stump I rescued. I have another but forgot to take a picture. Hope this one survives.

That's all I got pictures of right now. Please share your insights and advice.

In earlier posts there was mention of a bonsai nursery in Melaka. I'm in Muar and looking for a good (affordable) place to get supplies and material. Please let me know a bit about it so I can make a trip.

Acacia erioloba - camel thorn tree. The beautiful trees we see on the Savannah Plain in the National Geographic channel.
Very interesting !  rolleyes.gif

I think.......Stephagorn  can we make an exchange....

..this [attachmentid=3296518] a 3 yrs old Buxus Harlandii  (Boxwood) pre bonsai

for this [attachmentid=3296524]

We can meet up at Zebal's place on a Sunday but only after Chinese New Year,
and after all, I've not been to Ho Min Yuen for more than 2 yrs.

And this one [attachmentid=3296529] is a Premna Microphylla.

Thank you for the offer Bonsailelong. I'm quite flattered...

However, I will not be able to part with any of my camel thorns on my bench... You have good taste and a good eye though... You picked the one that is the farthest along towards bonsai.
That thee s also 3 years old since sprouting from a seed.

I would be up for a trip to the nurseries around Melaka with you guys some time after CNY.

I got this from ibonsai forum about japanese black pine,

"
about 20 years later, and from seed [ Japan, a gift pack posted to me,] I would say no. Additionally, a German guy also told me that the Japanese Black Pine grows all the way down onto the beach in Japan. You may wish to check and see if the Japanese Black Black wasn't originally a Chinese Black Pine and if it came from the coastal area of South China.

What may give you problems is translating the training information from Japan to tropical conditions and responses.

I have several pines and every year add on a few more seedlings, just to keep figuring out the training technique.

I live in the Caribbean, and we have a pronounced dry season from January until around May, growing cooler by October until say February[ lowest normal night temperature 19 deg.c and lowest recorded temperature 15 deg.c ]
Daytime is a standard 30 -> 33 deg.c as summer comes on.
Breezy island.

Soil mix is mostly crushed silica sand [ 70 % ] and compost. Testing the use of crushed, porous, eartheware red brick, from our local brick factories. Gives excellent drainage.
Growing containers are simple, peasant made earthenware lowfired red brick round flower pots, up to 16 inches wide [ 41 cm ] and 5 to 6 inches deep [ 12 to 15 cm ]
Placement full sun with a light zephyr.

See if you can contact Leo de Leon [ Manila ] as he is also growing Black pines.

Hope this helps.
Khaimraj

"

I think i would buy some seed and just try out, the seed are about rm20 for 5+ seeds. anyone want to try together?
*
Sounds like a good idea worth trying... nothing to loose, but it is a very loooooong term project. Count me in.

I wonder whether one can find young japanese black pine trees in Malaysia though?

Hi all,

Here is a guy from the UK who, in my opinion, is just a wizard in turning any old material into beautiful bonsai by adding his skill, talent, creativity, and a whole lot of patience.

link to videos:

I would like to try his techniques on some similar material sourced locally (stumps from local tree/shrub species).

I have managed to rescue 2 stumps so far.

One from a land that will be cleared for development. that is the stump I posted a picture of(hope it manages to grow).

Another one (type of conifer), was dug up by the MPM when they were doing some repair works next to the road. They just left it there for dead, all the roots out and exposed. So that was a lucky find I managed to pick up.

I drove by another 3 stumps from a hedge yesterday. All three were knocked out of the ground by a vehicle. If they are still there come this evening I'll pick them up also before they dry out and die.

such stumps will be long term projects on which I want to try Graham Potters techniques...

Will keep you guys updated.

A TRIP TO " HO MIN YUEN"

First of all I would like to  correct a mistake which is unintentionally make all the time.

[attachmentid=3309922]

It's "MIN HOE YUEN" BONSAI NURSERY. We got it "up side down"  blush.gif

This is my Melaka bonsai buddy - young, dyminic, enterprising and full of potential. rclxms.gif

[attachmentid=3309926]

Min Ho Yuen bonsai nursery was actually on a single piece of land of approx. 5 acres.
A Pokok Mangga double lanes drive way was built cutting right through it and now it's divided
into 2 sections.
I visited the first section of Min Ho Yuen under the guide of my buddy Zabel. Accroding to him this is the place
where we can actually buy some materials of reasonable prices. So we move on...

[attachmentid=3309943] A welcome gazebo at the entrance.

Lots of old and gigantic junipers
[attachmentid=3309944]  [attachmentid=3309945]  [attachmentid=3309948]

[attachmentid=3309950] West Indian Cherry

[attachmentid=3309953] Cascading Juniper Precumben.

[attachmentid=3310028] Some young black pine. Not sure is Japan or China?

After buying 2 nos of young black pine, a round lotus pot and a bottle of bark growing hormone, we process
to the second section of Min Hoe Yuen.
This is a "must" visit section.

[attachmentid=3309991] The entrance, looks nothing extra ordinary.  ohmy.gif

Once enter, it's another world.... shocking.gif  drool.gif

[attachmentid=3309996]  [attachmentid=3310000]  [attachmentid=3310002]

[attachmentid=3310006] Cascading Buddha Pine  [attachmentid=3310007] Causurina

[attachmentid=3310009]  Brazilian Rain Tree  [attachmentid=3310011]

And hundreds of "shui mui"

[attachmentid=3310014]  [attachmentid=3310016]  [attachmentid=3310019]

If your are looking for large and gigantic bonsai materials, this s the place.
If you have a big garden and look for bonsai style landscape materials, this is definitely the place.  icon_rolleyes.gif

I was outstation with my family to Australia for CNY to visit my wife's sister and only open the bonsai forum today.

A VISIT TO MIN HOE YUEN - "Forwards"

After making an appointment with my Melaka bonsai buddy to meet the next morning at
a place beside a supermarket early in the morning, I started my journey down and arrived
at the appointed location a little earlier, and at that moment the call of mother nature was high,
and so I just parked my car beside the super-mart and answer to the "high" call at the toilet of the mart.
It took about 3 mins+ and I came out....

[attachmentid=3310055] ...alamak ! a rm 100 parking summon !

The MPMB parking officer was still around, and so I asked him why he issued me such an expensive summon,
I went off for a short while just to go to toilet only. Without speaking a words, he shown me the double yellow lines just beside my car.
I can't argue anymore and just drove my car to a parking lot nearby.
Immediately I moved my car, another 2 cars moved in and parked at the same location that I have just parked.

[attachmentid=3310064] .. and the people left their cars and enter the super-mart.
The MPMB car parking officer was there, just looked on. At this instant I just can't tolerated anymore
and I walked over and asked the officer why these cars were not issued summons and only issued mine.
This  fellow, he just ignored me and walked away and disappeared himself at a corner of the building.
When I looked at the 2 cars, they are Melaka plates. Then I began to realize..... hmm.gif
Do Melaka cars have special privileges ? Definitely - NO!
I think this MPMB officer is waiting for the car owners to come out and ask for coffee money for not issuing
summons to their cars, as for mine, I'm from oustation, so he give me the most expensive summon to show
his superior that he is doing his job!  vmad.gif  mad.gif  mad.gif  vmad.gif

SO, THIS IS ONE MALAYSIA ! OR ONE MELAKA?  vmad.gif  vmad.gif  vmad.gif
*
Sorry to hear about this nonsense incident!!!

My Johor plates car got this type of treatment in Melaka before also. RM 100 parking fine.

Power corrupts... even if it is so little power of just a street traffic cop.

Hi Oldkidz,

Yes, if you are near Melaka, you can get it there in Min Hoe Yuen Bonsai nursery, i would recommend becoz if you go normal nursery they would not have bonsai materials rather they will have garden plants.
If you are near Semeyih, then Sanfong would be the best of the best to get great bonsais. With a budget of RM100/- you can get a very nice Shui Mui 80% done bonsai.
Bonsai materials ranged from RM10 - rm50. cheap ones.
With this you can get, shui mui, boxwood, buddhist pine, young junipers and some fukien tea.
The Min Hoe Yuen is located in Pokok Mangga( GPS SengHeng pokok Mangga), if you can find Evonsave supermart then you're near..

Hi Zabel

I'm planning to go to Melaka tomorrow (Sat 23rd Feb, 2013).

Could you give me the address for the Min Hoe Yuen Bonsai nursery? Would like to go and check out the nursery while I'm in town.

Also let me know what is happening with the Black Pine seeds you got for us. Need to square with you for that.

Hi Stephagorn,

The seeds are not here yet, i'll let you know once they're here.

Bonsailelong just arrange to meet up tomorrow for Min Hoe Yuen again!!
Yay! but it'll be in the morning, at 930am, a nice breakfast next to MHY then Bonsai surveys...
I'm not sure of the actual address. But if you can find eeconsave, and then Sengheng after the fly over of pokok mangga, it's just there.
I'll PM you my number, if you are near there but can't find it.
Or you can meet us up tomorrow as we are also going again, in the morning. we will probably there at 930 till 10 something...

Zabel & Bonsailelong

I need to bring my wife to Melaka for an appointment at around 10:30. So, was thinking of going after the appointment and stay towards the afternoon.

Don't think I can make it for 9:30.

I'll try and find it following your directions even if not with you guys.

Will plan to meet up and sync our times for a next trip.

Will be great to meet up with bonsai friends.

It was good to meet up with Bonsailelong and Zabel @ Min Hoe Yuen nursery on Saturday. (Even though briefly).

Thank you Bonsailelong for the boxwood gift. Very kind of you indeed.

I managed to get some bonsai supplies, soil, and two of the little flowering plants Bonsailelong recommended. I think it is the lavender purple star.

We must plan up to make another trip sometime.

Hi All,

It has been quite a while since my last post.

WOW! You all have been fairly busy. Lately I've only had time to keep my plants alive and watered. I did manage to source a few cuttings here and there.

@ Bonsailelong. The Camelthorns are still growing quite happily. I have essentially let them all just grow wild as I realized their trunk thickness are not suitable and will probably not thicken up in the pots especially if pruned often. I also plan to plant then in the ground to speed things up. I should post some pictures.

The purple stars are also going well. They have been constantly flowering until I recently planted them in the ground in my garden. They are now beginning to show signs if new budding and I hope beautiful flowers will follow soon.

The boxwood gift from Bonsailelong is also happily growing along. full of new foliage and budding. Will give it some more time before it's first styling under my hand.

Yesterday, after quite some time of not getting my itchy hands on some bonsai material, I bought 2 fairly big water jasmines from a local Muar nursery. They are both raw material, but have nice thick trunks and well developed surface roots. The next free day I get I be doing an initial styling on them. Now just looking at them and considering what can be done.

This will be my first attempt at water jasmine.

Let me know your advice on Do's or Dont's for the Sui Mei

Had some time today to tackle one of the Sui Mei.

I repotted it into a training pot with bonsai soil.
Trimmed some roots.
Flared the nebari into position.
Initial pruning but no wiring or styling yet.

Ill give the tree some time to recover and make new shoots before the next round.

Let me know what you all think.

Had some trouble uploading pictures... Now managed to get it.

Will add some descriptions also:

Attached Image
Rootball just taken out of the plastic... plenty of roots

Attached Image
Busy reducing the rootball and combing out the soil from the roots I'm keeping.

Attached Image
In its new training pot with nice new free draining bonsai soil. Soaking it through in bucket of water after repotting.

Attached Image
Those satay sticks is an attempt at nebari training. I've pocked them into the soil to keep the surface roots in the position i want them. I covered the new surface roots lightly with loose soil.

Let the copping commence:

Attached Image
After quite a brutal pruning this is what I left. Still need more pruning to be done, but i left myself with some options open. (once its cut its gone) So, no rush.

Attached Image
Another angle of the tree after pruning.

Attached Image
Still another angle...

Attached Image
From the top. This view give you all a better idea of the branching structure of the tree.

As you can see, I have not done any wiring or styling as I think I need to give the tree a rest to recover from the shock.

How soon after such a severe root and branch pruning should I go back for a round 2 pruning, wiring and styling on a Sui Mei?

Hope you like... Let me know what you think

Here's my suggestion

[attachmentid=3385609] and defoliate all the leaves, let new leaves grow out.
*
Thank you for the suggestion.

Can I do this now, or wait a while for the tree to recover the first pruning?

You should do it now, in a month's time new shoots will be budding out all over, then select the the branches you
want to keep, let them grow bigger before wiring and bend to the shape you like.
*
Ok thanks.

Will do it now and update on this tree in a few months after wiring it into style.
