Boxwood/Buxus Harlandii is the local name Huang Yang ???
I love Huang Yang bonsai, especially the tree bark. but i find it difficult to keep it health and green. maybe i am not doing it right. can i just keep it outdoor, under the sun/rain just like the 'Sui mei' bonsai?

Yes, Huang Yang.

Need half sunlight, suitable to put at balcony.
It's fiber root plant, so for it to grow fast plant in medium shallow /flat pot so the roots can grow faster.

any special soil needs?? and watering needs? tqvm

I usually use 2 portions of coconut fiber black soil mixed with 3 portions of hard burnt red soil.
Water every day, make sure water drain holes of the pot are not blocked..
Fed every week with little N46 fertilizer - dissolve in water before water around the plant.
*
thks, for your great info. just wanna ask again, what is n46 fertilizer, i am now using organic chicken feed fertilizer, and kingkong brand organic N9 P9 K9 fertiliser. you mention N46 is a brand or the nitrogen is 46%... tq

if its Nitrogen 46%, why the special case, hope you can enlighten me...

i was also told to use only organic fertiliser cause it would not make the soil go bad and hardered, is that correct?

sorry so many question, hope you dun mind cos i am beginner.. nod.gif

It depands on what species you are planting.
Organic chicken or goat waste fertilizer could be good for tap root species like water jasmine and so on.. (to me not so good)
If it's a fibre root specie say Boxwood or juniper, it can cause white root disease or root rot easily.
N46 fertilizer can be easily available from any super or hypermart (white colour). Dissolve before applying - (never over dose). It is actually a growing fertilizer that make your plant grow fast and big leaves.
Once you think your plant or bonsai is big enough, change soil mix and a pot that match your bonsai size and shape (defoliation needed) and apply the slow releasing fertilizer which can be bought from bonsai nursery.

Why not upload some photos of your boxwood for view sharing?

tq for the great info... ok i will take photo of my Huang Yang tomolo and post here for your comment....

I'm no sifu of bonsai except so happened have planted some Boxwoods only.

You can go to face book and see some of my photos there.  ( Just type - Phang Kw)
*
added you as friend in FB, you got nice Huang Yang, i love them. i see you put the pot in the open so subjected to rain and sun, does it affect the plant?
recently it's been raining cats and dog in my area... i keep mine on the side of the patio, so rain cannot touch them , but then i need to water them everyday...

Hi G400x2

This Huang Yang seen to have survive through a disaster, and therefore  suggest you give it a disastrous cut.

The idea is try to get it into a shape something like this.

It rains like nobody's business here too.

As long as the pot holes are not blocked, Huang Yang can take a lot of water.
this the time to add fertilizer to let it grow and trim and grow and trim and grow big fast!

I've yet to have enough time to trim all of them nicely, so some look messy.

(Ooop! Hope we are not monopolizing this topic in Lowyat.NET)
*
Once again tqvm for your trenmendous effect in suggesting your opinion on the trim/shaping ideas for my Huang Yang.
I see all your Huang Yang grows very well and very healthy. i really envy them. notworthy.gif

I will find time to start to work on my huang yang this evening and post here to show you the result.. thumbup.gif

Doesn't seems to be any more active bonsai kaki in lowyat ( except both of us ) hmm.gif

BTW, talking about the value of Bonsai how can you see how much does a Bonsai plant worth? How do we gauge the value?? Sometime i go to Bonsai nursery they put a price tag, is it too expensive? too cheap? just right? how we gauge that? shakehead.gif

for eg. your Huang Yang, this one is value at how much??

Hi, Bonsailelong, one question i wanna ask for your opinion, if the leaves starting to get yellow then later drop off, is it normal, is it sign of something is wrong? too much water? too much fertiliser? or ???

Hi, Bonsailelong, i understand there is a type of (medication) where you apply to the bark of the tree to remove the green algea, adn make it looks very clean. Do you know the name of those thing? It's white in color if not mistaken, i have seen ppl apply on the Huang Yang tree bark, but when i ask them, they say to protect the bark, but sort of refuses to tell me the actual name... sad.gif

FiCUS

I never like ficus until one day I got a chance to walk along a street in Sezuan China with 2 rows of gigantic ficus bonsai which simply gave me a terrific great feelng.
since then I was wondering I could one day plant and train at least one pot of ficus to become such a size without drawing RM from my pocket.

Too sad to say, I think I never be able to success.
If any body have any ficus bonsai story to tell and experience to share, I'm sure every bonsai kaki here will enjoy that.

In here, I show off my ugly hamper ficus bonsai which I started 2 years ago and looking for ficus sifu to comment.

[attachmentid=3208661]  Bought two and a half years ago, first time bearing fruits and fully defoliated.

[attachmentid=3208669]  Plant from a cutting.

[attachmentid=3208671]  Trying to create a mini one.

[attachmentid=3208676]  On the rock?

Hi G400x2

You got some good bonsai materials.

Hope You don't mind I give a little of my suggestion.

[attachmentid=3210251]  An apex is the first rule of bonsai.

[attachmentid=3210256]  Cut all at one side and eventually be trained into wind swept style.
*
Bro, Bonsailelong, your suggestion are always welcome... I am learning a lot from your ideas and suggestions ... tqvm rclxms.gif

BTW, how you defoliated your bonsai ( sui mei )? use hand to pluck them off or use cutter to snip then off, any difference?? tq biggrin.gif
