You can use normal non-ECC DDR3 in the HP Microserver. You can even mix them. I'm running the stock 1MB ECC DDR3 on one slot with 4MB non ECC DDR3 in the other slot.

Depends on what you are looking. Which version of the Synology are you comparing?

The Microserver is cheaper, more scalable because of the almost infinite possibilities you can do with it when you install and configure your own OS and expandable because of the more powerful processor and you can fit 8GB memory.

I find the performance fantastic. Ability to read and write almost close to Gigabit speeds (120 ++ MB/s) through the network connection.

The only downside is no RAID 5 available. But if you can fit in a nice PCIe x8 RAID card and use back the SAS cable already in the 4 bays, it would be a fantastic solution.

2 bay vs 4 bay of the Microserver? rclxub.gif

What features are you looking for from the Synology? If you're just looking for a simple 2 bay NAS solution for home use, I would suggest you go for the cheaper Buffalo Linkstation Duo instead for RM 300.

Create a DDNS entry. (NO-IP, DYNDNS)
Fill in the DDNS info either in Synology or Router.

And port forward 5000 (Default) for access to your NAS.

What port your CCTV use?
Just avoid using the same port as CCTV.

Synology using port 5000.
Access to your Synology by key in (hostname:5000)

Other than synology NAS, which other NAS can dl from Megaupload (premium) ? Hows the download performance of synology from Megaupload? On par with JDownloader/IDM using PC?

I was initially looking at D-link 323, but seems that nobody make a hack to dl megaupload yet even though its open source sad.gif.

Oh yah im looking for 2-bay HDD NAS, for home use. its suppose to sit on a normal document tray together with the tm's dlink wireless modem, size is also a constraint tongue.gif.

Stick to Jdownloader (FTW). Been using Synology for the past 4-5 years and still waiting for a Jdownloader for it. The Sdownloader is nowhere close to Jdownloader.

I'm currently temporary using my notebook to download via JDownloader. But later on I'll be removing the laptop and I would want to delegate the downloading tasks to the NAS. Is Synology the best option available for a NAS which can support MU downloads?

if you want to use CCTV or Jdownloader, get HP Microserver. You can install windows server on this system and run any windows based stuffs on it. No cheap NAS can even come close to this.

As for the lack of RAID5 in the microserver, you can always go for software linux (or windows server) RAID system. All other cheap NAS are using similar linux RAID also just that those NAS have build a UI to manage it.

Personally, I find RAID5 to be inferior when it comes to data recovery. If you have had experience recovering from a RAID5 system (hardware or software), you will know it's not easy. In my Microserver, I am using now 2HDDs per RAID1 system. That means I have 2 logical RAID1 partition. No problems there as I don't really need my partitions to be in 1 big chunk. RAID1 is easier cause I can take out 1 hdd anytime and plug it into USB HDD casing or directly to my internal SATA and I can read those data no problem.

And yes, I am using camera viewer and jdownloader on microserver as well. So far running fine on ubuntu 10.04.

You can read about my review or experience with microserver in my signature below.

What's wrong with RAID5?

Few month ago I have 1 HDD problem with RAID5. Swap out and replace with new 1. Than it generate back the data and everything back to normal. Nothing difficult there. hmm.gif

what if the hdd did not spoil but your server spoil? With raid5 you cannot just plug the hdd into any system and get it running again. With raid1, just plug in the hdd into any external casing and can access data instantly.

To be honest I think Sdownloader can handle what you need. It is just me, I just love Jdownloader so much, I can stick all my premium accounts in it. And it does the rest. I am not saying Synology cannot handle MU downloads in fact for basic downloads it does the job pretty well.

I just need basic functionality in downloading enough for me. A NAS that can dl from MU with premium is enough (of course must support password as a lot of sites now got passwords).

HP Proliant microserver a bit overkill for me already.

I'm very curious how come the price difference between a 2 bay and 4 bay NAS is so huge?!
