shifting to a new condo soon.. currently laying down cat 6 cables for all the 3 rooms and main hall. Next step is to build a NAS to store all my media and for play back.

I'm now in a dilemma.. Deciding on whether to buy a HP Microserver and load it with 4 drives or cannabilise my current pc setup to make a server and then buy new parts to upgrade my pc. Currently running a E6600 c2d on a DFI p-965 mobo.. thinking of retiring those parts to become my server with 4x2tb hdd.

Pc's kinda due for an upgrade as i'm hitting my ram limitation.. The current setup has 4gb ddr2 on all 4 dimm slots (1gb sticks x 4).. To upgrade the ram for my current use would mean that i need to get 2gb rams which cost around RM 120 now each... All these is pushing me to upgrade the whole setup to Sandy B and DDR3..

Can the p-965 run raid 5? I've tried a simulation of FreeNAS using VMware using zfs file system. Not using FreeNAS 8 beta as it's giving me some problem with VMware. Should i set it up with ZFS or just stick with plain software raid 5? Will be setting FreeNAS up on a 2gb thumbdrive. I should get a good thumbdrive right? What are the chances of the thumbdrive dying? Since it'll be storing the critical FreeNAS OS and Raid 5 information, i'm kinda hesitant on trusting it all on a flashdrive...

Any comments on my idea? I know it's kinda a jumble now as i'm still deciding on spending on a microserver or just use my current parts. Calculated the cost of each option and it comes down to about the same... +- RM 1k..

No one replying... guess I'll throw some of my common sense... hope it helps... wink.gif

One thing for sure is flash tech will die much quickly than traditional spinning hard disk, average of thumb drive might be few hundred to thousand writes? If you got lucky maybe 10+ writes per day and gets you around 3 years of usage. Some dying flash drives showing corrupted files, that's where you throw it away (no more warranty) and get a new one.

As for HP Micro-server, I'm not a user of one but unless you have no PC to build one NAS then you can go for it, if you have a PC left over, use it, save those for other purpose.

natively cannot.. but depends on what kind of raid 5.. soft or hard...

software raid5 can be archive using windows 2008 server which can be installed into the micro server...

if you want hardware based raid5, then you need to get a raid5 capable raid card which is not cheap at all

stable is as stable as ur OS lo...

any version of 2008 got raid5 support buildin, the soft raid is based out off dynamic disc.. so there is a certain flexibility there...

AFAIK, software raid reliability is based on the os used. If say for some reason my windows server goes kaput, my raid array data is also gone? Can the data be restored with a reinstall of the os?

kaput as in os corrupted ? or power failure ? there is a different.. cause due to the way how raid works...

well some of the disadvantages seem standard unless you willing to shell out 1.5k for a raid card with a BBU ...

There's no 100% reliable product out there can solve RAID issue, even hardware RAID will fail and chances are rebuilding them might caused data lost as well.
So, in the end if you're really darn concern about your data, do a backup, every company that are dead serious use RAID1, RAID5, or even RAID6? has tape backup or you could go the cheaper way of using external hard disk.

Ahh... almost out topic LOL... anyway, that's why those Synology (for example) product are so expensive, hardware RAID, better support, better speed?

Probably going to turn my current hardware into a server and purchase a new set of upgrades for my pc.. Can write it off and claim income tax as well.

Btw, a lil out of topic.. income tax claim requires the whole pc (branded) or can i just buy individual parts all from one shop?

HI all nas sifu,

I'm quite new for all this, currently looking for 1TB nas with RAID1 setup, RAID1 is a must. My usage will be like storing project files, store some photos and videos to be streamed using xbox360,iPad and remote access as well.

I prefer simple setup means without a PC. Currently found few of the following model but don't really know which is good, can some sifu give me some suggestion?

1.) Dlink DNS323 / DNS320 available?
2.) Western Digital My Book World Edition II
3.) Buffalo LinkStation PRO DUO
