Thanks for the tip on the food. Will look into changing his food by tomorrow. The silica gel i use is used by the owner who sold it to me. She recommend it to me. So far, its ok..... The silica gel is also odorless.

First of all, welcome to the pokimon family.

FYI, Iams kitten is not a good brand. In fact, it's one of the poor quality cat foods. Good brands are like Eagle Pack, RC, Innova Evo, Blackwood & so on. Brands like Whiskers, Friskies, Iams, pedigree are NO. Another thing is the bedding for the litter. Silica gel is not good especially for male pokimons as it might get stuck in the pokimon's belly button & cause infection. Bedding such as wood shaving (Chipsi Classic, Delikate), Breeder Celect, Healthy Pets is used by most our forumers here.

Thanks for the tips on the food and litter. I'll probably finish the silica gel first, since I bought a packet of it, then only change to wood shavings. How often do I have to replace the wood shavings? Now all I do everyday is scoop up his poop and mix the gel. If not enough then only add in. At least that was what I was taught.

My nephew has 2 hamsters, and my brother changes the wood shavings every two weeks. Is it like that as well rclxub.gif

I'll go buy a new pack of food for him after work today. Dun want to feed him inferior food.

Depending on what kind of silica gel, the poor grade with crumb and might stick to the male pokimon's penis. Never experienced it before, but thats one of the many precautions I read from several caresheets.

Not sure about Iams as well, saw in forum that they use pets as test subjects in a cruel way, so Iams is out of the question for me.

If Sammy is potty trained I supposed you can change the silica gel to wood shaving and use fleece to replace the newspaper. A 15L wood shaving may last you more than a month, possiblity two months. I prefer Chipsi over Delikate, Delikate is somwhat more dusty to me.

Good luck Gaigene. = )

I dunno if the silica gel I'm using is poor grade or not. I'll get the brand and let you know tomorrow.

Yup, Sammy is potty trained. I'm worried that if I change from silica gel to wood shavings, I'll have to potty train him again. Would tht be necessary? Also, I've been reading about fleece... but dunno where to find it. Does it mean that instead of using newspaper as the underlay to his cage, I use this fleece instead? Can the fleece be washed or do I need to change it like the poo litter.

For his food, I'm going to buy RC for him after work and change his food immediately.

Thanks.

Fleece can be found at jusco hypermarket. Is sold in form of blanket. It cost about 14 bucks and washable. To identify it, something like "XYZ Brand Fleece Blanket" is printed at the price tag.

I'm not expert in silica gel, cause I never used it before. But you can observe it, if is not good, then maybe then you can change it. After all, since the seller has been using this all awhile, I think it should be okay, otherwise she would have recommended something else. And the potty training part, I'm not sure as well, maybe you can put two trays inside, one with wood shaving, the other with silica gel, and try to teach him to use the wood shaving. = )

I don't think you need to potty train him again. Cox they recognize the tray. Hmm.. About the fleece, you can get it at Ikea IINM. The light blue color one which only cost you at RM12.90. You'll only need to wash it if it is dirty. But I feel it is better you can have at least 2 to interchange. Wash it every week or 2 weeks once.

As for the food, since he is on Iams now, slowly change it by mixing Iams & the new one. Then day by day slowly increase the amount of new one.

For the litter part, IF, in case the hedgie wont regconise the tray n simply poo again after u change the bedding to wood shavings, then u have to do it this way:
use back the silica, but add in half of wood shavings n mix them up. then day by day slowly change the bedding until it's fully shavings. that shud do the trick.
It's just the same way as the food. smile.gif

whats that mean? rclxub.gif
anyway... the food please try what babymoli had said.. slowly changed the food.. if not it will cause stomach problem to ur sammy smile.gif

and the litter... if can better got for breeder celect as its the most recommended for litter. me n babymoli have experienced before that the wood shaving stick to our hedgie's private part and also sometimes it can also stick with the fur near the stomach... and its really hard to take it off without hurting the pokimon if u aware. So now I changed to BC for more safety smile.gif

as potty trained, normally I just pick on spot everyday if he got poo and throw the BC inside the try n changed to a new one... i changed his beddings all 2 weeks once when I think its dirty then I changed smile.gif

What I mean is that I just picked him up from the breeder on Saturday. So only from Saturday I started feeding him with the Iams. But I bought RC Babycat already. I'm gonna change his food from tonight onwards.

I'll go search for Breeder Celect this weekend. Then will change his litter box.

I'm also gonna change his bedding this weekend. Will go to Ikea to buy the fleece. Thanks for all the advise. notworthy.gif

Added on October 29, 2008, 11:27 amJust a small update. I changed Sammy's food yesterday to RC Babycat. I put half the old and half the new. He did not really notice the difference as he was eating the RC more. But one thing I realised was the it seems the RC is harder than the Iams hmm.gif ?? I'm not sure.... Coz when ever he eats it, I can hear the "crunch" "crunch" sound, like its very hard or crunchy. Did anyone notice that?

yes, RC kibbles are generally more solid compared to iams. naturally because iams is somewhat a bit lower in grade and the kibbles are not as compact as RC's. i think you can figure out yourself when you compare the prices alone, there's a reason why iams are selling their catfood much cheaper. besides, you did mention that your hedgehog was eating RC more, so that explains the quality.smile.gif

even hedgehogs know good food when they see them, don't you think? wink.gif

Why would you feed an animal chocolate? Chocolate is not really good for animals. Like dogs. Better not do it :]

hm... quite normal if compared with my hedgie, coz he used to do that. but not sure bout others.

it could be either u din provide a hidebox, or the hidebox is too hot, not "airy" enuf, too small, or not comfy enuf(din have any extra bedding/blanket to snuggle)...
and ur litterbox is filled with beddings. Hedgehog can be cranky.

Echt wont sleep in the hidebox now... he would sleep outside whenever the light is off.
