welcome gaigene~
im sure u're very excited till all the hedgehog eqs n accessories are ready in ur house d. lol~
Yes, this weekend, we went walking around pet shops to look for a new house for our little baby. We are still deciding wat name for him.....Went around looking around for food and other stuff..... tongue.gif very excited.

If it is still a baby, I think so as Jenny said can only pick up the hedgie end of the month after the baby is stable, what food is good for them hmm.gif We saw so many different types of food.... Dunno which one to get also.... Any suggestions??

I've read that most our you, feed the hedgie with cat food... but is it ok to feed the hedgie with dog food also??

The housing for the hedgie is rather expensive, we saw a few that is RM300++ but looks very nice. Anyone can suggest somewhere that is cheaper? We are also thinking of maybe just buying a toyogo box for him until we find something nicer....... The rest are not too expensive like food, poo litter (crystal type) as well as the food tray......

So happy and excited...... icon_rolleyes.gif

They can also take dog biscuits (2 months ago, I was feeding RC dogs - with the silky terrier image). But if you can, most recommend RC cats. Mine are fed RC cats now, mealworms (4 times /week), occassionally boiled unseason chicken / hard boil eggs. Heard from forumers that there is hedgehog food available for sale at Pet Safari. Not sure if is good. You can look at the ingredients.

A huge toyogo box will do. But as they grow in size, is also good to provide them a bigger home if you have space to spare. Housing hedgie is easy, just avoid mesh bottom cage.
*
Thanks for the feedback..... i also realised the mesh bottom cages will make it difficult for them to walk....

The ones I saw had a wooden floor.....what do you think? I got a free box of Iams Cat food for kittens, is this good?

Wooden floor should be alright. Not heavy ar? Haha. No idea how it looks like, what came in my mind is just a kennel with wooden floor. Lolx.

Not sure about Iams. Heard that Iams is very cruel when it comes to experimenting to animals when its comes to experimenting with their products. Take a look at the nutrient part, will be good if protein is high (20%+) and fat (around 10% - 15%) lower.

For additional protein, usually I give some eggs or chicken or mealworms.
*
Thanks for the feedback. Will look into the nutrient part. My wife feels a bit yucky with the mealworms. I can tell her to feed the baby eggs instead.

Hi all,

Just want to share some good news....(at least for me & the wife). Last Saturday, we picked up our hedgie at last.... Thanks Jenny rclxms.gif Its so cute. Me and the wife could not stop looking at the little fella. We have named him Sammy. I've added some photos to share. I was very surprised that he was not too shy. He actually started wandering around his new house. Snffing here and there. I placed an old t-shirt of mine so that he will know my scent. You can see that he is actually biting the t-shirt in one of the photos. Dunno if that is normal.....

Anyway, we are now feeding him Iams kitten. He seems to like it. Very clever to makan this fella. Also his mother potty trained him so I'm using silica gel for his litter box. Again, thanks to Jenny. She has been a great help.

Actually saw him play with the toilet roll for the first time last nite. But only played with it for less than a minute. He does not really seem to like it. I'll still have to wait and see on this.

Better switch his food to RC babycat. This is the best food for hedgie smile.gif
as for the litter, if u dun mind try to use Breeder Celect litter cat. This is what I use and its odorless... I have never use the silica gel before so I can't say anything. I only recommend stuff that we have been used and have been proved by owner who used it as well smile.gif

Hope u get along fine with Sammy and welcome to the family!
*
Thanks for the tip on the food. Will look into changing his food by tomorrow. The silica gel i use is used by the owner who sold it to me. She recommend it to me. So far, its ok..... The silica gel is also odorless.

First of all, welcome to the pokimon family.

FYI, Iams kitten is not a good brand. In fact, it's one of the poor quality cat foods. Good brands are like Eagle Pack, RC, Innova Evo, Blackwood & so on. Brands like Whiskers, Friskies, Iams, pedigree are NO. Another thing is the bedding for the litter. Silica gel is not good especially for male pokimons as it might get stuck in the pokimon's belly button & cause infection. Bedding such as wood shaving (Chipsi Classic, Delikate), Breeder Celect, Healthy Pets is used by most our forumers here.
*
Thanks for the tips on the food and litter. I'll probably finish the silica gel first, since I bought a packet of it, then only change to wood shavings. How often do I have to replace the wood shavings? Now all I do everyday is scoop up his poop and mix the gel. If not enough then only add in. At least that was what I was taught.

My nephew has 2 hamsters, and my brother changes the wood shavings every two weeks. Is it like that as well rclxub.gif

I'll go buy a new pack of food for him after work today. Dun want to feed him inferior food.

Depending on what kind of silica gel, the poor grade with crumb and might stick to the male pokimon's penis. Never experienced it before, but thats one of the many precautions I read from several caresheets.

Not sure about Iams as well, saw in forum that they use pets as test subjects in a cruel way, so Iams is out of the question for me.

If Sammy is potty trained I supposed you can change the silica gel to wood shaving and use fleece to replace the newspaper. A 15L wood shaving may last you more than a month, possiblity two months. I prefer Chipsi over Delikate, Delikate is somwhat more dusty to me.

Good luck Gaigene. = )
*
I dunno if the silica gel I'm using is poor grade or not. I'll get the brand and let you know tomorrow.

Yup, Sammy is potty trained. I'm worried that if I change from silica gel to wood shavings, I'll have to potty train him again. Would tht be necessary? Also, I've been reading about fleece... but dunno where to find it. Does it mean that instead of using newspaper as the underlay to his cage, I use this fleece instead? Can the fleece be washed or do I need to change it like the poo litter.

For his food, I'm going to buy RC for him after work and change his food immediately.

Thanks.

I don't think you need to potty train him again. Cox they recognize the tray. Hmm.. About the fleece, you can get it at Ikea IINM. The light blue color one which only cost you at RM12.90. You'll only need to wash it if it is dirty. But I feel it is better you can have at least 2 to interchange. Wash it every week or 2 weeks once.

As for the food, since he is on Iams now, slowly change it by mixing Iams & the new one. Then day by day slowly increase the amount of new one.
*
Ohhh.... I know what fleece is already. I also have the Ikea one. I got 2.... biggrin.gif. So i just use it like the newspaper rite??

Need to slowly change him ah..... ?? Coz I've only been feeding him since Sarturday. I'll change his diet slowly. Thanks to all for the advise.

Empty_reg: Thanks. I know what fleece is already. nod.gif biggrin.gif

whats that mean?  rclxub.gif
anyway... the food please try what babymoli had said.. slowly changed the food.. if not it will cause stomach problem to ur sammy smile.gif

and the litter... if can better got for breeder celect as its the most recommended for litter. me n babymoli have experienced before that the wood shaving stick to our hedgie's private part and also sometimes it can also stick with the fur near the stomach... and its really hard to take it off without hurting the pokimon if u aware. So now I changed to BC for more safety smile.gif

as potty trained, normally I just pick on spot everyday if he got poo and throw the BC inside the try n changed to a new one... i changed his beddings all 2 weeks once when I think its dirty then I changed  smile.gif
*
What I mean is that I just picked him up from the breeder on Saturday. So only from Saturday I started feeding him with the Iams. But I bought RC Babycat already. I'm gonna change his food from tonight onwards.

I'll go search for Breeder Celect this weekend. Then will change his litter box.

I'm also gonna change his bedding this weekend. Will go to Ikea to buy the fleece. Thanks for all the advise. notworthy.gif

Added on October 29, 2008, 11:27 amJust a small update. I changed Sammy's food yesterday to RC Babycat. I put half the old and half the new. He did not really notice the difference as he was eating the RC more. But one thing I realised was the it seems the RC is harder than the Iams hmm.gif ?? I'm not sure.... Coz when ever he eats it, I can hear the "crunch" "crunch" sound, like its very hard or crunchy. Did anyone notice that?

yes, RC kibbles are generally more solid compared to iams. naturally because iams is somewhat a bit lower in grade and the kibbles are not as compact as RC's. i think you can figure out yourself when you compare the prices alone, there's a reason why iams are selling their catfood much cheaper. besides, you did mention that your hedgehog was eating RC more, so that explains the quality.smile.gif

even hedgehogs know good food when they see them, don't you think? wink.gif
*
Yes, I agree that even our hedgie knows which is the better one..... rclxms.gif Anyway, thanks for the explanation.

I've got a question to ask you all ...... any kind of icon_question.gif is appreciated. Last weekend I went to Ikea to buy a fleece for my Sammy. I lined his cage with the fleece. No more newspapers. But now he is just hiding in-between the fleece (coz, the fleece too big, and I fold it into half). He does not come out. Just hiding inside there. Dun think he is eating too much also. Now days he is eating very little. Also not drinking too much water.

I'm getting very worried about my baby. Please icon_question.gif ......

Thanks.....

What did you feed him?
Hiding is natural, unless is still hiding under the fleece even at night when all lights are off.
*
I'm feeding him RC babykitten (I think..thats what it is called....its been recommended by some of the seniors here). I'm not too sure if he is still hiding even if the lights are off... Will have to look into that.

hmm.gif thats what I think also. But asking around to make sure. I play with him almost every nite. I take out the fleece and place it on the floor and let him run around on it. Coz my house floor is marble. He has a bit of difficulty in walking on marble.... always slip and slide around... which is quite cute at times. But I felt its a bit naughty of me to let him do that. So now days I place the fleece on the floor, got better traction for him....
