Is normal. That is not fierce. Is defensive, an aggresive one will attack you instead rolling into a ball. How much time does the owner spent with it? It'll take some time for it (the hedgehog) to get to know you. (bonding).

Is possible to tame. All exotics are wild caught at early stages when they are first introduce to our pet market, people tame them and some sell their offsprings, thus = 'tamed'. Just like the now popular sugar gliders.

would like to share some good news here, my hedgehog has given birth to three cute hoglets on tuesday, all of them in good health and the mommy hedgie is very protective for the time being. smile.gif

too bad i was outstation when it happened, couldn't witness the cute little fellas when the mommy just gave birth (my family saw the hoglets about 5-6 hours after their birth). early on the hoglets keep dropping out from the hidebox and my girlfriend had to keep scooping them back in using a plastic spoon. the mommy hedgehog was very good, kept lifting the entire box to try and cover up all three hoglets but i guess the box was too small, in the end i told them to replace the hidebox with a bigger shoebox and now all of them are nicely tucked inside. smile.gif

hope to peek at them more often in the coming week, so far i only saw them once when the mommy went out for a drink, all three are already bigger than my thumb, hahaha, it's a great moment for me and my family, these days everyone in my family takes time to watch them grow bigger day by day.

azian9100: Most grow up to roughly 7 to 8 inch length (stretch), width somewhere around 3 - 5 inch in standing position. Depending on how fat are them, males are slightly larger and may weigh more than 1 kg.

Hiyuki: Mine depends depends. I use RC with high protein. Sometimes can't find RC 32 cause most often they come in big packs. I fed mine half a scoop (milk powder scoop) at the evening, before I go to bed I top up by 1 full scope. 1 scoop should be sufficient. But I'm feeding mine more cause she's very skinny, can see the backbones.

Before seeing the doctor, she's barely eating. After deworming, her appetite returns. If measure with standard tablespoon should be around 1.5 heaping scoop : 1 scoop of milk powder spoon.

livingmonolith: Congrats. Share some picture soon when they are ready to pictures ya.

Sometimes I wonder how this works.
If people disturb the hoglets too much, the mother may consume them.
Then there are some reported cases that the mother reject their youngs. Some breeders will then need to handrises them. But in certain cases I read in a webpage, they gave the rejected hoglet to another nursing hedgehog. (like fostering). Just wondering why doesn't the foster mum cannibalize the foster hoglets? Any ideaS?

if still hoglet, its good to fed them RC babycat or 32? but when they reach around 4 to 5 months++ better changed to RC kitten cuz its low in protein, if fed too much RC 32 later became 'pig' like mine laugh.gif

but now he became so big =.=
dunno caused by new kibbles or because he already a big boy now biggrin.gif

empty : I'm not sure bout the case... cuz as far as I know I never encounter ppl who give another hedgie to foster the hoglet..

Here's some of the fostering articles.

DEALING WITH REJECTED HOGLETS:

If you find a hoglet that has been rejected by its mother, you can try fostering under another mother with babies that are about the same age or you can hand-feed if you choose. I find that many rejected babies have birth defects the mother knows about and we don’t see, so I don’t try to fosters these. If something happens to mom, or she gets sick, though, I do try to foster the babies. If I don’t have another female to foster them under, I use FIRST BORN kitten formula, (goats milk also works well) and feed every 3 - 4 hours - just as you would a baby bird. While feeding them you must also stimulate them to urinate by gently stroking the lower abdomen.

Hand-feeding should only be used as a last resort and does not need to be used to produce friendlier animals. The survival rate is very poor for hand-fed hoglets at the present time. Most die within the first two weeks. If at all possible, foster the babies rather than hand-feed.

Taken from Hedgehog Club

If you do happen to be on time to rescue some or all of a litter from rejection or cannibalization your best bet is to try to foster them out to another female. This is why it’s always a good idea to breed two females at the same time. This is especially important with new mothers, a seasoned female may be more willing to take in fosters than one who is also on their first litter but that isn’t always the case. I’ve had a first time mother with her own litter of 6 hoglets take in and successfully care for foster babies so it is possible.

thanks all for the wishes. so far i've managed to look at them only once, don't think i want to do anything more in the coming week until they're big enough to move around.

this is actually the second time i tried breeding them, the first time it was unsuccessful. but anyway i think all three should do fine until they reach 2 weeks old and won't be cannibalized (touchwood). on the first day itself the hoglets were dropping out from the box too many times and they were put back into the box using plastic spoons, even the hidebox was changed during that time because there was too much big movements from the mommy hedgehog while feeding the hoglets. the mommy was very cautious and protective, but definitely not harming the little ones, all three were tucked at one side nicely waiting for mommy's milk when i peeped into the box.

the male hedgehog is a normal algerian dark grey (or S&P snowflake for some), while the female resembles an algerian chocolate white, but i don't think i'll be able to categorize it with my experience. i think bonai posted quite a few photos of the female hedgehog here previously, if anyone wants to know what's its colour. maybe bonai can do me a favour and re-post the photos again? besides, i have yet to learn how to upload photos here in lyn. wink.gif

Hi all,

Just want to share some good news....(at least for me & the wife). Last Saturday, we picked up our hedgie at last.... Thanks Jenny rclxms.gif Its so cute. Me and the wife could not stop looking at the little fella. We have named him Sammy. I've added some photos to share. I was very surprised that he was not too shy. He actually started wandering around his new house. Snffing here and there. I placed an old t-shirt of mine so that he will know my scent. You can see that he is actually biting the t-shirt in one of the photos. Dunno if that is normal.....

Anyway, we are now feeding him Iams kitten. He seems to like it. Very clever to makan this fella. Also his mother potty trained him so I'm using silica gel for his litter box. Again, thanks to Jenny. She has been a great help.

Actually saw him play with the toilet roll for the first time last nite. But only played with it for less than a minute. He does not really seem to like it. I'll still have to wait and see on this.

Better switch his food to RC babycat. This is the best food for hedgie smile.gif
as for the litter, if u dun mind try to use Breeder Celect litter cat. This is what I use and its odorless... I have never use the silica gel before so I can't say anything. I only recommend stuff that we have been used and have been proved by owner who used it as well smile.gif

Hope u get along fine with Sammy and welcome to the family!

First of all, welcome to the pokimon family.

FYI, Iams kitten is not a good brand. In fact, it's one of the poor quality cat foods. Good brands are like Eagle Pack, RC, Innova Evo, Blackwood & so on. Brands like Whiskers, Friskies, Iams, pedigree are NO. Another thing is the bedding for the litter. Silica gel is not good especially for male pokimons as it might get stuck in the pokimon's belly button & cause infection. Bedding such as wood shaving (Chipsi Classic, Delikate), Breeder Celect, Healthy Pets is used by most our forumers here.

Thanks for the tip on the food. Will look into changing his food by tomorrow. The silica gel i use is used by the owner who sold it to me. She recommend it to me. So far, its ok..... The silica gel is also odorless.
