QUOTE(krynzpeaches @ Mar 5 2008, 04:36 PM) Arghh, so geram my net went crappy when I was about to reply... Now so many to reply... Ans it ain't all that good! Kp,my female changed her colour le.You bought an adult, possibly wild caught gliders ofcourse they can bite till bleeding. Will take a whole lot of time and patience to tame them and I hope you will stick to it to the end and not give up half way! That is what most newbies do... Cannot cope about a month or 2, give up, sell the gliders to someone else... Seen too much of this happening. Like what jitshiong has said, WC furs are mostly tainted and very brown in color, this is due to their pee stain, nesting in the wild and markings. Need to correct that statement a bit. Adults be it captive bred or WC, CAN bite till draw blood! Should have known that before you commit to getting them. A nursing joey will get a very faint taint around their muzzle only. Most WC brownish color won't shed off anymore, the taint has become permenant and since ewe can wash them with whitening shampoo, the color will most likely to stay. Yes, those are WC. They ship and keep them in that bloody condition. Very sad. KP That was after 2 years la. But she overgroomed herself before that. Maybe that's y the colour changed back to the normal grey. |

Maybe that's y the colour changed back to the normal grey. Some is possible, some minor change, some will not. Thats why I said "most"... My Iggy was also brownish(not as bad as those WC) but is now lighter than before, more like grey with hints of browns. He used to rub himself a lot on the sleeping pouch and transferring the brown stains onto the pouch, then he grooms himself a lot... So his color is not as bad as before... But if overgroomed or like the furs come off, the new furs that grows will be grey KP |

They started taking mealworms? __________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Tried to intro them to mealworms but they still prefer fruits & my special brew of blended apples, honeydew & organic regular rolled oats... QUOTE(ggMing @ Mar 5 2008, 04:28 PM) thank you.. last time i use fake plants for my cage decoration purpose.i figured, it would be better to let them bite me now than to let them bite me when they are bigger... lol... i just can't stand looking at my glider playing with herself in the cage... yeah!!! my friend is giving me a bigger cage for my glider... actually, as a present.... well, i was thinking whether or not to put fake plants in the cage.... it would definitely make the cage look better with fake plants... but my only concern is that i'm afraid when i bring my glider out, they will jump on to branches and trees... will they do it?? any recommendation whether or not to put in fake plants? my sg are hapi with those new toys for the begining. then after few days i found them biting those fake plants and i dun know they will "eat" those fake plants or not. i ady removed all fake plants from my cage. |

I'm also in the midst of thinking how to make my bigger cage more "filled up".... but cage not with me yet LOL.... most likely I will use ropes coz Kiah and Kapi like to walk and hang on their ropes.
My cage is not big enough. Is the normal RM100 cage from pet safari lah but it is so filled up with stuff! A friend saw my cage, she said my cage looks like a circus hahahah.... |

I was at Ikano's Pet Safari earlier and I saw at the Reptile Section got a mirror box thing (dunno what it's called) and inside it got 8 sugar gliders, all very young only.
There is a bright light shining down. I asked the man in charge, arent these nocturnal? Dont they sleep during the day? He replied yes. Then I was wondering why the lights? Because I can see all 8 of them snuggling up and hiding under shed and shadows, all facing down - possibly due to the light. Then he said without the lights, they'd all die of cold. So the light is a must. RM700 per pair is best price offered. I asked him to take out one of the young ones. He put it on my hand and I didnt dare to move. Neither did it. Then it moved to one corner of my hand and make squeeky sound when my sister wanted to touch it. Then when I look closer, I can feel the nails suddenly clawing tightly on my hand. Not pain but can feel the pokey. Then quickly put it back. My sister and I also wanted to keep sugar gliders. We love them except for the fact that: 1. They cannot be toilet trained 2. They eat worms and crickets which is quite gelifying. No other source of protein? |

"They cold ma..." "They'll die if too cold..." Which obviously is not gonna happen if they had provide a warm piece of material of housing for them Yes, they cannot be toilet train. Yes, they need mealworms or crickets... Can substitude with chicken and egg, but they won't take those by itself, need to include in their mix... Mealworms or crickets is still the best KP |

That's the scenario commonly found at most petshops. They don't provide proper housing for the gliders and also the proper information. Normally they dun give them a pouch to sleep in cos they want the customers to be able to see the creature, thus no pouch for them to hide. With the pouch in there, they'll be sleeping in there and also most gliders will become pouch protective. Bite when u try to put ur hand in the pouch. There is a bright light shining down. They eat worms and crickets which is quite gelifying. No other source of protein? RM700 is pretty normal price in petstores. It's better to get them from trusted breeder where u know how old is the joey and what are they fed with. Most joeys in the petstore aren't handled before, or rarely handled. That's y they are scared of human. That explains the grip when the joey was on ur hand. As for the peeing n pooping, can't do much bout it. They are animals, and it's just normal for them to go whenever they want. If they like u, they pee on u.LOL! Other source of protien can beobtained from chicken, turkey, and eggs like what spel'it said. Minus the 2 bad part, they are very wonderful creatures. OK, back to two important questions (I probably asked this before but I forgot the answer, dont mind some of you repeat and those of you never seen this before, can help educate me too!)
1. How much does it cost to keep a pair of sugar gliders... The cost of their supplement, grooming, food, cleaning - EACH MONTH? 2. Is it safe to put the cage outside? I know some of you had answered this with cold wind, raining and musang. What if there's cover (raincoat type of cloth) and there is a padlock at the cage door. Wouldnt that "solve" everything? It's kind of hard to keep a caged animal indoor. My house already got two Westie, tambah somemore, sure kena whack! QUOTE(alkt @ Mar 6 2008, 03:58 PM) Penny, I know la. Hahaha... I came so close to buying it from crazymouse_yyh last time and last minute I had to cancel. House not much cicak leh. The bloody worm and cricket are super gelifying. Luckily there are alternatives.if u wanna get gliders or any pets, always try to find breeder and get from them. other source of protein? ur cicak at home also can QUOTE(spel'it @ Mar 6 2008, 04:01 PM) hehehe... i know what u mean. they can also get sources of protein from chicken n eggs. used to freak out when Koochee grab a mealworm. now i gave them mealies by using a LONG forcep like clip that's used for planting aquarium plants. Hehehe.... Chicken and eggs are a good source of protein for them eh? OK, but can they live solely on chicken and eggs as a source of protein? A lifetime without wormie and crickets, just eggs / chicken - can? If can, then it's one problem solved!the toilet train part...dun know wut to comment, except...that's how they mark u...mark=love. hahahah How do you avoid getting pee / poo on each time you take it out? Been wanting a pair for so so long! I think what jitshiong say is right, they dont want to give them a proper housing because they want it to be on display for the customers.Yes, they cannot be toilet train. Yes, they need mealworms or crickets... Can substitude with chicken and egg, but they won't take those by itself, need to include in their mix... Mealworms or crickets is still the best KP When you said mealworms and crickets are still the best. Do you mean to say that chicken and eggs' protein is insufficient? Probably not as good as raw meat (worm and cricket)?? If possible, I'd like to feed them chicken / egg all their life (if I ever get a pair, that is), without mealworms or crickets. Is that possible? How can you stop the thunder to avoid them getting the shock of their life? --- Yes, mealworms and crixs are still best as it's as close to their nature of feeding on insects. I'm a girl and I can get use to the mealworms for the love of my suggies, I'm sure you can too! --- Actually if they are trained to handle the joeys better, getting a joey/glider out of a pouch with the right technique is much more easier Somehow my suggies knows not to do biz on me, but will do it on other people instead KP |

u can't avoid the pee and poo 100%
but try not to hold them right after meal and when they just woke up. let them do business first playtime they will be less peeing. just a bit and most of the time wont smell unless they are marking u mealworm wont be so geli after a few weeks i used to use forceps. now single picking one by one using fingers. always pick the most healthy first. i hate giving crickets coz cant stand the smell and the noise at night its like they are having some party themselves monthly cost i think KP already answered last time. let say around RM50 for foods and treats. |

Source of protein - I gave "dan tan" aka "sweet steamed egg" or mouse pinky.
Source of calcium - cat food, iams, once a week. Staple food - non citric fruits For fun - mealworms / crickets Accidentally taken - chow kuey teow, bak kut teh, twisties |
