I was at Ikano's Pet Safari earlier and I saw at the Reptile Section got a mirror box thing (dunno what it's called) and inside it got 8 sugar gliders, all very young only.

There is a bright light shining down. I asked the man in charge, arent these nocturnal? Dont they sleep during the day? He replied yes. Then I was wondering why the lights? Because I can see all 8 of them snuggling up and hiding under shed and shadows, all facing down - possibly due to the light.

Then he said without the lights, they'd all die of cold. So the light is a must. RM700 per pair is best price offered.

I asked him to take out one of the young ones. He put it on my hand and I didnt dare to move. Neither did it. Then it moved to one corner of my hand and make squeeky sound when my sister wanted to touch it. Then when I look closer, I can feel the nails suddenly clawing tightly on my hand. Not pain but can feel the pokey.

Then quickly put it back. My sister and I also wanted to keep sugar gliders. We love them except for the fact that:

1. They cannot be toilet trained
2. They eat worms and crickets which is quite gelifying. No other source of protein?

OK, back to two important questions (I probably asked this before but I forgot the answer, dont mind some of you repeat and those of you never seen this before, can help educate me too!)

1. How much does it cost to keep a pair of sugar gliders... The cost of their supplement, grooming, food, cleaning - EACH MONTH?
2. Is it safe to put the cage outside? I know some of you had answered this with cold wind, raining and musang. What if there's cover (raincoat type of cloth) and there is a padlock at the cage door. Wouldnt that "solve" everything?

It's kind of hard to keep a caged animal indoor. My house already got two Westie, tambah somemore, sure kena whack!

QUOTE(alkt @ Mar 6 2008, 03:58 PM)
Penny,
if u wanna get gliders or any pets, always try to find breeder and get from them.

other source of protein? ur cicak at home also can laugh.gif
*
I know la. Hahaha... I came so close to buying it from crazymouse_yyh last time and last minute I had to cancel. House not much cicak leh. The bloody worm and cricket are super gelifying. Luckily there are alternatives.

QUOTE(spel'it @ Mar 6 2008, 04:01 PM)
hehehe... i know what u mean. they can also get sources of protein from chicken n eggs. used to freak out when Koochee grab a mealworm. now i gave them mealies by using a LONG forcep like clip that's used for planting aquarium plants. Hehehe....

the toilet train part...dun know wut to comment, except...that's how they mark u...mark=love.  thumbup.gif
hahahah
*
Chicken and eggs are a good source of protein for them eh? OK, but can they live solely on chicken and eggs as a source of protein? A lifetime without wormie and crickets, just eggs / chicken - can? If can, then it's one problem solved!

How do you avoid getting pee / poo on each time you take it out?

QUOTE(krynzpeaches @ Mar 6 2008, 04:16 PM)
Yes, many of us has approached and advise the staffs at PS regarding the light and their answer is still the same... "They cold ma..." "They'll die if too cold..." Which obviously is not gonna happen if they had provide a warm piece of material of housing for them mad.gif

Yes, they cannot be toilet train.

Yes, they need mealworms or crickets... Can substitude with chicken and egg, but they won't take those by itself, need to include in their mix... Mealworms or crickets is still the best icon_idea.gif I used to be squirmish, but for the sake of my monster, I learnt using the forceps, then lama-lama, got sooo used of the mealworms, not squirmish at all now! flex.gif (They're really harmless little buggas tongue.gif)

Hah! I'm back at the sugar glider thread again! Been wanting a pair for so so long! I think what jitshiong say is right, they dont want to give them a proper housing because they want it to be on display for the customers.

When you said mealworms and crickets are still the best. Do you mean to say that chicken and eggs' protein is insufficient? Probably not as good as raw meat (worm and cricket)?? If possible, I'd like to feed them chicken / egg all their life (if I ever get a pair, that is), without mealworms or crickets. Is that possible?

QUOTE(jitshiong @ Mar 6 2008, 04:20 PM)
That's the scenario commonly found at most petshops. They don't provide proper housing for the gliders and also the proper information. Normally they dun give them a pouch to sleep in cos they want the customers to be able to see the creature, thus no pouch for them to hide. With the pouch in there, they'll be sleeping in there and also most gliders will become pouch protective. Bite when u try to put ur hand in the pouch.

RM700 is pretty normal price in petstores. It's better to get them from trusted breeder where u know how old is the joey and what are they fed with. Most joeys in the petstore aren't handled before, or rarely handled. That's y they are scared of human. That explains the grip when the joey was on ur hand.

As for the peeing n pooping, can't do much bout it. They are animals, and it's just normal for them to go whenever they want. If they like u, they pee on u.LOL!

Other source of protien can beobtained from chicken, turkey, and eggs like what spel'it said.

Minus the 2 bad part, they are very wonderful creatures.

Haha, there was once this cicak in my house fell into the cage where i house Twinkle. She ate it. I found the remains of the cicak the next day.
*
My God... the remains of the cicak sure is gross!! Anyway, I think you are right about how they want the gliders to be displayed and it's difficult to take it out once they are comfortable in the pouch.

Like me, pee on me... What is this man...

Just curious - is there a lot of cleaning up to do?

They eat worms and crickets.
They poo / pee as they like.
They live in a cage.

Is there a lot of cleaning to do? Like cricket leftovers? Worms internal? etc? Can I just wipe the cage with Dettol or something on the weekend, air it for few hours and put them back inside?

Hmmmm... now that I am not sure. Never tried before but you gotta really know what goes in. Some fruits gliders should not take. An example would be bananas.

I would still stick with holistic dogfood coz that is what I know tongue.gif
Not enough bonding and playtime. What have you been doing lately?
Becareful, most Malaysian fruit branches are toxic. The only branches that are safe would be from the Hibiscus plant and the guava tree. The best branches comes from the eucalyptus tree but kinda hard to get here.

LOL you gotta be brave to feed mealworms or crickets lah. I can even grab mealworms using my fingers and let them wiggle about LOL.
Cleaning up is not like how you clean a dog. It is quite easy. Just change the substrate of the tray whenever you see alot of poo and leftovers.

They won't leave any internal stuff from the insects, just the fiberous exoskeleton that they chew and spit out. Look like little brown pellets.

A weekly wipe or wash is fine. I usually wipe every few days with plain water coz if you wipe and overpower the cage with another type of smell, then your gliders would musk more, this happens with males more. Since you wanna get females, you don't need to worry bout smell.
*
Hi Hun,

Thank you for educating me, again. It's good that they dont dirty their cage so badly. Sometimes, quite lazy to clean also but once a week is fair enough.

What do you mean by substrate? Is that newspaper or do you mean things like those errr... wood wood stuff ppl put for their hamster to reduce odour?

When do you think the sugar gliders will be available?

QUOTE(jitshiong @ Apr 7 2008, 10:44 AM)
NOt much cleaning i guess....
I change the newspaper everyday, wash the cage once a week.
JUst rinse it cos they'll mark more if it's too clean.
They need to feel home with the smell
hahaha
*
OK... now this is interesting. Thank you for sharing. I just home they wont make me smell like them!! Hahaha...

Opsss, sorry tongue.gif
No need to pull their hind legs also can, they know which part is edible and which is not.

Yes, you can give them alive or put them to sleep first by putting them in the freezer for a brief 30-60 seconds smile.gif No bashing up needed wink.gif

You can teach your suggies not to mess around your head, might take a while, but it's possible. I teach all mine not to climb or play on top of my head after the one incident where Iggy poo-ed on my head shakehead.gif

So everytime they wander on top of my head, I will quickly scoop them up and say "No, not on my head" not sure if they really understand, but everytime they go on top of your head, scoop them down immediately, don't just freeze and let them go about on your head smile.gif
Substrate to catch all to the poo and pee smile.gif Best we found so far for glider cage is Litter Star or Breeders Celect. Or else normal newspapers will do but you need to change it like every 2-3 days, unlike using a good substrate, only change it once a week smile.gif

The wood shavings like for hamsters one can also be used, but make sure if you are using any substrate there is a wire mesh between the substrate and your suggies.

Yes, i will make sure there is a gap between them and the substrate.

KP,
Thank you for replying. I've read most general information about sugar gliders but stuff like pricing and how long it last just isnt there in the first page. Finally saw your post at #900. It's helpful and thank you. Sorry for not searching it first.

Yes yes, saw it already.

QUOTE(crazymouse_yyh @ Apr 7 2008, 03:56 PM)
Well, once people know about gliders and when they see Toby pets do it again, maybe it can change them? You know, like 10 ppl nag, maybe it would bring about a change.....
Litter Star Rm13, Breeders Celect RM22... each bag can last 1 month or more depending on how often you change the bedding.
*
OK, so its another RM13 per month added to my expense list. Thank you!

Silly question. Do female gliders bleed when they are having period? Sorry I had to ask this because I never knew dogs bleed until much later in life.

By the way, is there anything such as staple diet or supplement which we can get in Australia but not here? My sister in coming back in June and that's about when I will get a pair of gliders of my own. Is there is anything we can find there and not here, please advise. I will try to ask my sister help buy for everyone who is interested.

OK, I read through about 30 pages tonight and see that Hun had fed sugar gliders with canned food for cats? How about those for dogs? Is it suitable?

It cannot be staple food, right? Staple food will still have to be consist of fruits / eggs / boiled chicken / vege? I think I can blend some of them myself but need some advise later on.

*I just want to apologize if some of these has been asked before but I'm excited and curious. Thank you for answering. From now onwards, I will be posting a whole lot more questions, hope you dont mind.

Today, I had a 20 minutes phone conversation with crazymouse_yyh and learnt extra things about how to care for my pair of gliders which is coming soon.

I just want to extend my gratitude to Hun for educating me and correcting where I was wrong. Lots to learn still. I hope my pair of joey comes soon.

Hi silverwineus,
Thank you for your encouragement and positivity. I appreciate it. I'm a dog lover but it only began last year. I am OK with dogs but I hope to do better with gliders since they are such tiny creature. Looks fragile to me and the worrisome part is we will never know when they're sick until it's too late some times (read somewhere on the internet).

I also waiting for the joeys. I am getting them from Hun, the source I trust.

It depends if you want to give me adopt fees or not, it doesn't matter. Most important is that the owner is a good one.
*
I hope you dont mind me busy body or what. I am new to this community too and I would suggest charging adoption fees, even for a small price like RM300 for two. Why? I kind of feel that people will only appreciate things when they need to dig out money from their pockets rather than take it for free ala take it for granted.

QUOTE(silverwineus @ Apr 10 2008, 11:26 AM)
You really have a heart for your gliders, just wondering what compels you to give them away, is it hard to take care?

I'm now stuck with my work, feel so frustrating.. sometimes the PC just turn against you.

Maybe your gliders have a taste for older women? Who knows..? The older female can nurse him, mother him.

Hahahaha... that's what I wanted to say.

QUOTE(EvanSoon @ Apr 10 2008, 12:58 PM)
i dont mind giving u adoption fees or going to pick them up from u but i dont have the place right now as my current place doesn't allow pets.. they allow hamsters but not sure if they allow suggies..
n yea.. i'm curious y u letting them to others?
shiokjin.. what ur saying is true also.. but for a new comer to the society of gliders i think a bit risky for me if the gliders not healthy although i know the basic feeds and so on..
*
If you're a newbie like me, you should not take a unhealthy glider and try to make it healthy. To maintain and keep the healthy ones living is already a challenging and time demanding task. What more to say is an unhealthy one.

Its OK if you get it from a friend but please, like Hun said do not do this with pet shop. This will only encourage them to repeat their sick actions more as the sick gliders also can get sold, OK la, can produce more underaged sick gliders.

QUOTE(crazymouse_yyh @ Apr 10 2008, 01:05 PM)
One thing a few people here never realize this. If you go buy a sick or underage joey from a petshop, you are not just "saving" a life.... but you are supporting the bloody shop, buying off their sick or young joey, making them get profit to buy MORE underage and sick ones.

Then what happens? This circle won't stop.... You gotta be cruel to be kind. Ignore these petshops, if you do not support them, then they won't bring in underage joeys or sick ones too. Like the petshop near my home, they use to sell joeys but since the joeys kept getting sick and customers complain, they stop selling.

Don't you guys want these unethical petshops to stop selling underage joeys?
*
How true, cruel to be kind. If we encourage it, the cycle never stops.

may be not accurate but at least it sets a base or precaution for us to look at?
for example humans that dun know their BMI is way over would still eat n not go for check ups or slow down n do more exercise would they?
same goes for suggies as we cant tell if they r sick or not untill it is too late so BMI shows if we r giving a good diet base for them.. although not accurate but somewhat helps a bit.. in my own opinion that is..
*
I think a much more reliable way is to touch their body and see if you can feel their ribs? This method works for dogs but since I'm a newbie in this community, I'm not sure if its applicable.

BMI is height x weight leh... how to count for glider, I really dont know.
