The living cost is super duper high there I'd say ... I've seen the ranking ... Hong Kong is one of the top 5 if I recall correctly.

Depends on the course, HKU isn't really great for every courses. NUS and NTU are better than HKU in terms of technology (engineering/IT) aspect.

True. HKU is renowned for its medicine,business/finance(no question about this) and law courses. And by the way, Im pretty sure the cost of living there is not as high as that of UK/Aus. Once you do the conversion of the currency rates its pretty much the same. Transport there is really cheap(provided that u live in Hongkong and not Kowloon since theres no trams in Kowloon). Food- depends on where you are. There are cheap food around less central areas.

does anybody have any comments on this coursed offered by CityU of HK? - Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) in Accountancy and Law

Is it a good choice? I'm interested in Accounts & Contract Law smile.gif I'm just hoping that anyone who has/hasnt studied that course will give some opinions/feedbacks.

btw, as far as I know, tuition fee in HK costs around RM40K/year right? How abt living costs? Roughly how much it costs (in RM) per year? Thank you.

Added on November 23, 2009, 9:32 pmdo we need IELTS to apply for HKU, HKUST & CUHK? can anyone clarify this matter for me? thanks.

Hey there. I am currently studying Systems Enginereering and Engineering Management at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).

I'm not too sure about CItyU's business in comparison to other unis outside HK but in HK, HKU and HKUST would be the top choice for business.

Tuition fees for most unis in HK are 80K HKD per year which is just below RM40K except for HKU which charges 100K HKD per year ( just below RM 50K)

CUHK is slightly further out from the main city area (HK island and Kowloon) so my costs might be slightly biased but my current yearly living cost is RM12k per year not including summer period (Regular academic period from Sept until May) and not inclusive of hostel fees. Hostel fees differ for each uni but is 8K HKD per year here. (RM3.5k for the regular academic term)

And about English requirements, it differs per each person, faculty and university. They accepted my SPM 1119 English as an english requirement but I have heard of others who needed IELTS.

Feel free to pm me if any of you guys have any questions abt studying in HK.

ps. Yes..the mainland students pwn us all. Especially in Science, Maths and Engineering Fields. =(

Are the engineering courses in HKUST/HKU recognised here and internationally? I gather that all accredited engineering courses in the world have a span of at least 4years (be it masters or degree). But from HKUST website, I found out that they offer only 3 years BEng. So that does mean its not recognised?

The malaysian government recognises both universities for a start. As for engineering, I have enquired with the Board of Engineers of Malaysia and they said that they will recognise the courses if they are also recognised by the local board of engineers in Hong Kong. I also asked about the four year engineering requirement and i was told that it was a requirement for local engineering programs but not all overseas ones.

Hello there. HKUST is currently offering 3-Year Programs but it is in the transition to introducing 4-Year Programs in another 2-3 years time. As far as it goes, All programs offered by HKUST is recognized internationally (though I'm not sure about Malaysia itself).

MUET and/or SPM 1119 English are both accepted in HKUST.

~Cheers!

Is getting 4As in A level enough to enter HKU for dentistry course? I havent applied yet but it seems that they need alot of documents like referee's report (some sort of testimonial from teacher i guess) which unis in other countries do not need. How high is the chance of me getting into HKU? can anybody tell me honestly? and i'm not really good in writing personal statement asking for my career aspirations..may i knw how important is it?...and im not really active in extra corricular activities too...should i still apply for the course?

their intake, if i'm not wrong is only once a year in september (unless you're going there for exchange).

as for the dentistry bit. 4As is really good results academic-wise. as for the other questions about whether you're good enough or your co-curricular etc etc, you won't know unless you try applying. i don't think anybody can give you a direct answer for that. but do note that your personal statement would be something that can help you stand out from the rest of the academically excellent applicants, especially since the intake for dentistry is generally quite small and they tend to have a pool of academically excellent applicants to choose from annually. try to write something honest and personal rather than generic exam-like essays and you should be fine.eg. write about how you love sweets but hate going to the dentist or something. O_o sharing personal stories that the selector can relate to might make your application more memorable than the generic i-hold-1000-posts-in-my-previous-school lists. but that's just my two-cents. it's all up to you. all the best!

Cantonese is a little different. Ta Pao here doesnt mean take away like it does in Malaysia. The usage is different here as they are particular about each phrase. Ta Pao can work if you cant finish your food and you want to take it away. But if you want to order a take away you should say "ngoi maih" or "ling/lik zao" or "hang kai" also works. Excuse my poor romanization as i never studied jyutping for canto.

Cheapest lodging will be on campus i guess? haha. You can get cheaper lodging if you live further away from the cities and the main roads as well as further away from mtr stations.

the cantonese in hk isn't that difficult to pick up especially for those tvb drama lovers. as for accommodation, just as 'imitation' said, lodgings on campus are generally much cheaper than outside (note that most facilities and utilities are covered too) and generally quite comfortable too.

Any chance of a fluent English speaker, ok-ok Mandarin speaker and sucky canto speaker surviving in HK? I understand canto, but can never learn to speak it (nobody to practice with in my household).

I see. How about HKU? HKU vs HKUST, which is better for engineering? HKU 3 years also? I plan to do 3years BEng and 1 year MSc somewhere else. But i'm still a little doubtful about the 3yr course offered as most renowned universities and even Malaysia offer 4yrs. Will I lose out in the competition with other 4yrs graduate?

Also take note not to say 'mai sui' (buy water). Ta Pao and Mai Sui is generally related to funeral processions and stuff..

Just avoid using localised terms like 'pasar', 'kaki'(ownself) etc etc. you'll make yourself sound like a cinapet

Thanks for the advice. I guess i'll have to write something real abt why i decided to study dentistry. and its true i've never been to a dental clinic for dental check up haha tho i'm having a wisdom tooth now. Actually, its the wisdom tooth that made me want to become a dentist. I dint know what is a wisdom tooth till the day i got one. LOL.
