have a go again at the first post in the first page. most of ur questions have been answered there.

with a diploma, dont expect that u're gonna work as an architect. u need a 2nd degree to fully qualify urself as one. without LAM recognized part 2 degree, u wont be able to practice architecture here. well, atleast not legally.

bro azarimy ,

thanx for ur advice that day.Now im coming up with something that i think more complex than what im trying to look for that day.
Ur rite. The complexity doesn't mean all those complex gadgets or engineering added stuff, but on the issues itself may give its own complexity and its even meaningful when we merge all those issues into sulotions in which are our job.. : to solve and even control any issues regarding human and its habitat.

am i rite? laugh.gif laugh.gif
or still missing some points there? sweat.gif

well, yes, u're getting nearer. u need to open up ur understanding on things. dont limit urself to what one or two lecturers say. sometimes in architecture, especially in academics, saying it loud doesnt mean u're right. architects are naturally confrontational people. they would drive in an issue and say that they're correct and everybody should follow them. but this conflicts with malaysian or asian ideals, where we respect the teachers so much that if u go against them it's considered a sin biggrin.gif.

UM and UTM shares alot of ideals in architecture education. both schools believe that complexity is not necessarily referring to technical aspects. yes, u can have a technically complex building such as a stadium or a hospital, but why bother if u're just gonna repeat what others have done? if u haven done it, doesnt mean it's new! laugh.gif. complexity comes from the depth of issues u're exploring. u can design a toilet for a thesis, but u could talk about how sound from u taking a dump could be heard by ur sleeping wife, which eventually can lead to domestic disturbance and leads to a divorce; or talk about how siblings share the same toilet daily; or why malaysian toilets always basah; or how public toilets in malaysia are one of the worse in the world.

small project - but big issues.

there's a way to go through diploma, it takes longer and sometimes costs more. but diploma is easier to place urself into than degrees, the only problem most encountered is what happens after diploma. the intakes of diploma holders in accredited universities are still low, meaning even if u have a diploma, u might not be able to continue to degree. but u can work already as a technical assistant, so u wont waste ur time just waiting for an offer.

looking at the topic u gave, it's quite obvious u've put ur emphasis on complexity on the wrong aspects. u're too obsessed on the end product by tabling out all the spaces required, the facilities that it's gonna have and so on. u only delve the issue in point 1 (issues) then points 2 (intentions) onwards are all solution oriented. how to solve when u dont even give urself time to explore the problem? it's not even too harsh to say that u've already got the end product in ur head. this is not thesis.

what is an architectural thesis?

it is a process of examining current issues and formulating solution(s) to the issues.

what u have is an issue that barely scratched the surface, but already an elaborate solution. this is what we call jumping the gun. architects are always ready to jump into solution mode as soon as they see an opening. in thesis u MUST resist that notion, atleast until after u've explored ALL the openings. that's when u choose an opening and start solving. but until u've found all openings, resist!

at this point, i would only concentrate on point 1-issues. expand on the matters at hand. ask WHY in each issue. try and answer it. then look at ur answers to that and ask WHY again. u will find a lot of opening. then u will realize that ur issues are anything BUT shallow. it will relate to socio-cultural issues in malaysia, the behaviours of malaysians, how climate affects our activities, how being 8 hours infront of europe can be an advantage to football fans.

dont jump the gun!

yes, u can take the test, but i'm not if u could do so immediately after u graduate. LAM may require u to gain field experience first.

which is better highly depends on what u wanna do. i wont tell u witch is better, but i will help u make the best, informed decision.

diploma allows u to get ur feet dirty in architectural mumbo-jumbo right after SPM. since architecture almost has no pre-requisite from SPM subjects, starting early is definitely better. infact, if architecture education do accept PMR, i'd say, go do architecture from PMR. there is hardly anything SPM that u'd use in architecture, really. but the drawback is, currently it's quite hard to find a place AFTER diploma in an IPTA. the chances are almost smaller than STPM holders. but then again, ur options to overseas studies are better with a diploma.

STPM offers the most open ended and internationally recognized pre-university certificate available in malaysia. it allows u to go straight to degree, both local and abroad. once in degree, u dont have to worry about placements after part 1, bcoz it should be easy enough to continue to part 2, both in msia and abroad. but like i've mentioned before, u wont be using anything u've learned in STPM in architecture. not much anyways, other than contributing to ur mental maturity in learning.

foundations are university specific. if u do ur foundations in LUCT, u will have to do ur degree in LUCT. u dont have an option to change as other universities normally do not recognize other's foundation programmes.

and like i've mentioned before, LAM do agree that certain degrees from IPTS are part 1 equivalent. equivalent means u are qualified to sit for the exam. so yes, u could take the exam after ur studies in IPTS. but do remember, "u COULD take" doesnt mean "u WILL pass".

it's a hard time for me yesterday when presenting my notion to the lecturers..especially about my issues..all they want me to do is juz cut all the social issues, the current scenarios and talking crap.

"Juz go straight to the point. What are u going to build actually. What are u going to have in ur building?Izzit juz a huge space with LCD-TV and and food stalls?Thats all? Then its not complex enough and not much architectural qualities there..go change ur title.."

boom..i got frustrated..i don't even have enough time yet to think about what im going to put in my building cuz im still in the process of searching for more info regarding FOOTBALL..then still "kena tembak" for not having a fancy brief..

lol, that's total bullshit on ur lecturers' part. i think some lecturers in malaysia are still obsessed that they are the client for the students' project. this is absolutely false stance, as they are actually the judges, so they cant just say "jump straight to the point, bcoz the early part is bullshit".

i even think that they have a hugely skewed perspective of what architectural qualities are. one could create and present a totally empty space but with a multitude of complex qualities embedded in its perimeters rather than in the empty space itself. it is always open and subjective.

but then again, as a student u might not know this, so u dont have enough ammunition to return fire. so i dont blame u. biggrin.gif.

i still feel that it is too soon to go into "what u want to build". it's total bullshit.

all they want is all about gadgets..even maya stuff that i think can juz build a huge space then put all that "designed-by-others" gadgets been accepted yesterday..
its still just a huge space.not much architectural qualities.

"just lot of shop houses..labs..class rooms..waa..thats too common.."

yes i know that. thats why im trying to create something new.not shops lots..not labs..

what im really frustrated is that..my proposal is still overshadowed by my senior's work, what the lecturers so-called a much more complex than my proposal..-> adidas soccer science and academy..when i went through the work..still are just football fields, lots of class rooms..auditorium..hostel for students..
i still think thats common..more boring class rooms..

Well, I'm not sure M'sia's architecture is now but after at here study, I think there is SUCH A BIG GAP.

& i realize that architecture is not only interest, but a lifetime commitment. There is a time where i lost my passion, my interests and dont feel like doing it anymore and some more i screw my resuts, but support & encouragement from experience ppl is very important.

I really hope that all architects to be able to be clear of what they really want to do coz you only have 1 life to live.

guys, need your opinions smile.gif

i am going to buy my laptop for use in university [architecture year 1]. i went through various university websites that state their laptop requirements for architecture students (mostly US unis) and the following is what i compiled: -

- Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0+ GHz or AMD Turion 64 X2 2.0+ GHz
- 2+ GB RAM
- 120+ GB Hard Drive (5400 or 7200 rpm)
- 802.11g Wireless Network Support
- USB 2.0 / Firewire (Firewire is optional but helpful for video work)
- DVD Burner
- 10/100 Ethernet
- 128+ MB dedicated Video Graphics Card (avoid Intel or integrated graphics)
- 15.4”+ widescreen notebook display [is this really necessary?]
- External optical mouse
- 3 year on-site/at-home warranty

my budget is around 3500 (is it too low? blink.gif ) so after surfing the web and laptop brands' websites, i think this one *might* do --

Dell Inspiron 1520 - RM3, 506.00
- Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T5750 - 2.0 GHz, 2MB Cache, 667 MHz FSB
- Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium 32 bit SP1 Edition (English) can anyone tell me the difference between Home Basic, Premium and Ultimate?
- 15.4" Widescreen WXGA (1280x800) Display with TrueLife ™
- Memory: 2GB (2 X 1024MB) 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM
- 250GB SATA Hard Drive
- NVIDIA® GeForce™ 8400M GS with 128MB GDDR2 dedicated graphic memory
- 1-Year Limited Warranty (Next Business Day Service - parts & labour) [Extra warranty means extra cash >.< or does anyone think i should get a 3-year warranty? i'm going to be studying in HK so...sigh. i don't know. maybe i should get one because i don't know anyone there who can fix my laptop for me]
- Integrated 10/100 Fast Ethernet

so...anything else i should consider? any other brand recommended?

help really really appreciated >_< i don't know anything about laptop specs before yesterday =_=

if i were u..having such budget, i'll go for desktop in which i'll gain even more huge performance compare to a laptop.3K n above i can get myself a quad core processor with a high end graphic card which may help a lot when u do graphic work rendering starting in ur second year.It may be bulky to have a huge desktop but it is worth it.Most of my friends sold their laptops and get themselves desktop in their early years of study.

juz my opinion..

That's kinda expensive for a not so impressive list of specs. I don't know if 15.4" is necessary, but I'm using 14.1" and my senior who's using the same size too is doing fine with it. The 667MHz FSB is outdated, since now lappies are gearing towards 1kMHz FSB (I bought mine last yr and is a 800MHz). But 667MHz is ok if you're not tech savvy who wants the latest and fastest in everything. tongue.gif

You can visit Windows' website for more info on that. I'm usng Vista Premium, which offers more eye-candy features than the Basic one tongue.gif

My graphics card is an nVidia 256MB 8600M GS which offers a far more greater performance than the entry level 8400M GS. There are better options one like 8600M GT (Dell does offer this IIANM) which is faster than my 8600M GS. But I don't think you'll need too strong a graphics card. As long as it's a dedicated graphics card (means not built-in like Intel) will do fine.

As for memory, the more the better. 2GB is the standard you'll need at least nowadays. You can add more rams if you like, but mostly 50-60% of the 2GB are used up during all these processes. 2GB is actually quite sufficient.

Added on July 18, 2008, 6:31 pmBTW, I'm using the NEC Versa E6310. smile.gif

* Why NEC, you ask? Bcos it's a rare brand and is not so well known among students here, unlike the ubiquitous Acer, Dell, HP/Compaq. tongue.gif
