Hey Azarimi san,

I'm currently pursuing a degree in architecture. Since my university (IIUM) is focusing on computer made design, should I go for a high tech laptop ie:

a DELL Precision with Nvidia Quadro FX 1600M graphic card or

is a DELL XPS 1530 with a Nvidia Geforce 8600GT graphic card would be sufficient?

well, in my experience, most laptops nowadays are overpowered than what u need for CAD. just make sure u have a huge and fast RAM (for display card as well as system), a fast and reliable harddrive, and comfortable ergonomics to work long hours.

trust me, even laptops 5 years ago still good for CAD. my wife is still using hers for her design works.

Sir Azarimy, can you tell me why you think HKU is one of the best archi schools in Asia? i'm still considering HKU or local unis...

i personally think the most exciting thing about HKU is its visiting lecturers biggrin.gif i read that Jean Nouvel and I.M.Pei lectured in HKU before (*_*) to think those people actually standing in front of the lecture hall talking to you!! (*_*) okay, maybe i'm overreacting tongue.gif so, question: do students really benefit from these visiting lecturers? how long do they usually stay at the university? i went to UTM's website but couldn't find any news relating to its previous/current visiting lecturers...can forumers from UTM Arch or other unis share your views on your lecturers/visiting lecturers? how do the universities invite these famous architects anyway?

i'm not trying to imply that local unis are not good (cos' i'm most probably going to local uni after all smile.gif ) but what is the difference between local archi schools and other overseas archi schools? the facilities? we have labs and studios complete with the latest designing softwares for students, don't we? the teaching methods? i believe our lecturers and profs probably graduated from renowned schools too (although their CVs are not listed on the UTM FBE's website so i can't really check) and from the quotes below---

Azarimy ,
being lead by dr.rashid for 2 semester , i must say that guy rocks ! he is leading us ahead from the others with breath-taking ideas . hehehe .

if u like dr. rashid, try dr. khairul. ideas is one thing, but implementation is another. khairul is both. total mindfak.

---i know that UTM profs/lecturers are great too...so? what else?

whenever i tell my mom the reason *i think* HKU Arch is a good school, she'll say 'how do you know local unis don't have/do that?'. that's what i want to know too. what is it that makes our unis less sought-after than Cambridge, Bartlett, etc? (i mean architecture schools in those unis)

hi aprisis .
i would like to answer that for azarimy , hehehe ... just refer to the first post of this topic .
well alfa college used to be ALIF college . i have friends form there , and i have been in limkokwing for half sem before . to be honest , unlike limkokwing students , i shall call the ALIF college students as 'patriotic' as they are really believing in their college n they love their college . and limkokwing students doesn't .
in the end of the day , let's go to the real business . ALFA college only offers Diploma programme , meanwhile limkokwing offeres Degree in Architectural Science . Limkokwing has one advantage , that is it is recognized by LAM and PAM by batches . it depends on ur batch quality .

HKU have some of the leaders in specialized fields of architecture under one roof. we're not just talking about experts, but the leader to the experts around the world. their facilities are also top notch, but their main strength is their expertise and the raw brain power behind it.

it really depends on ur preference, really. some people benefit from training under the best. others prefer lecturers or architects that allow themselves to bloom. big difference between the two. top architects/designers have a huge ego, and u have to compensate (read: sacrifice ur own ego) in order absorb their expertise. if u're just a noob student who likes to sit and listen to lectures, then perhaps u wont be acquiring the full benefit of studying under an expert.

looking back at local universities, we do have expert or professional architects as visiting professors. for example in UTM, we've had mario botta and bryan lawson before. other top architects have also visited UM and USM. and sometimes they dont visit local universities, but rather conduct a programme under LAM/PAM in KL which we all can attend. but ofcourse, nothing beats studying directly under them.

but dont compare facility wise, bcoz even UTM tops bartlett anytime. they have crappy facilities, and even worse toilets than puduraya. but the service is top notch, as one could expect from any british schools. facilities of architecture schools doesnt really mean anything. it's what u do with what u have that counts.

alot of people can claim alot of things. but can they back it up?

ALFA have yet to achieve a part 1 accreditation. so claiming no. 1 is pure bullshit to me.

i only recommend those with part 1 or part 2. but if u're doing diploma, then i'd have to go with either LUCT, taylor's or UCSI simply based on their line-up of lecturers and some experience in conducting the programme.

no, there is no limit for part 1 or part 2, or the gap in between.

i'm here to express my gratitude to everyone who helped me during my application and interview for UTM architecture.

and i got it!! XD so thank you...especially to sir azarimy for this thread.

though i'm still a lil uncertain about my decision, but i still feel very happy to know that UTM actually thinks i'm good enough for them (or maybe i have the potential for development, heheh) ^^ and that i have what it takes [albeit only initially...??] to become an architect! you have no idea how much that means to me. seriously. i feel totally confident and top-of -the-world after the UTM interview.

so THANKS A BUNCH!! *hugses*

Hello , azarimy , It's me again . How are you!?
Miss this thread and you sooooo much .Useful thread , I need to admit it.
Wish to come out lim teh ( drink tea ) with you one day although we never meet before .

Anyway , I would like to ask you some questions here.
Let say I am taking archi recognised by RIBA now, and then I finish my RIBA part one in A school, after that, I decide to take my RIBA part two in another school( B school) .
B school is recognised by both RIBA and PAM .
If I further my years in B school and complate my course, I'llbe recognised by RIBA part 2 and PAM part 1 , or RIBA part 2 and PAM part 2? ( I don't have any PAM part one )

Thanks and have a nice day

i have no idea. perhaps LAM would require u to sit for the part 1 exam, just for formalities, nothing more. it should be a walk in the park for u. do check with LAM directly.

Congrats! All the best! I must admit to making a big blunder in the UTM test regarding rulers (I had brought them because NUS required them and I got mixed up, plus I was a tad careless with reading instructions) and I struggled with my Malay in the interview. Haha

Anyway I got MU's architecture program which was second on my UPU list. Lol. Interesting I guess but Purdue here I come! smile.gif

hie, anyone can give some opinion on what kind of job to expect with a part 1 degree from an unaccredited university?
i.e. the Job scope, expected salary, highest position possible in a company (big and small). I intend to work.. long term.
What will the future be like if I don't intend to pursue part 2? Any direction or wisdom is greatly appreciated.
I thank u guys in advance..
I'm near the completion of my part 1.. with average results

Congrats to those who got into Architecture programme in the public unis. I got building technology in USM... Not exactly what I wanted but no harm trying, right?

See if I'm lucky enough to be able to switch to Architecture tongue.gif
