I don't profess to be an expert in this area, but I'm willing to volunteer in providing information/guides on the following:
Sydney, NSW
Renting in Sydney
Living in Sydney (all the essentials like getting around, shopping for essentials, banking, telecommunication, internet connection, etc.)
Working in Sydney

University of New South Wales (UNSW)
Engineering @ UNSW
Australian School of Business @ UNSW
Medicine @ UNSW
UNSW Foundation Year

We'll need some other volunteers from Sydney University, Macquarie, UTS and some regional institutions like UWS and Wollongong.

Off the top of my head, I think the following active LYNs here could contribute towards this (if I miss out anyone, just let me know):
blaxez, pangping1510, jae, nyprinz83

How about both city AND state? Saves the confusion.

Yeah, city and state could work too.

Anyway,I think i need some help in renting in Sydney.I still have no permenant accommodation yet.The colleges didnt reply me at all.Is there anything i can do while im in malaysia, other than sending the temporary accommodation form to ISS?

IDP was pretty helpful in the start. But after helping me to apply for UniSA and receiving my CoE, they totally ignored my emails after that. =/

Yeah, thats the problem.Like that,i also can do it myself lah.Applying isnt the hardest part.

You might want to consider ringing the colleges personally to check on your application status, but afaik, if you don't get it by now, chances of you securing a place there is pretty slim.

If private accomodation is in your list, then try looking around these 2 websites: gumtree & domain.au
You'd be able to find whole heaps of ads there posting on rooms or units for rent, I reckon this is the best you can do while you're in Malaysia.

p/s: 1 suggestion while browsing through those websites, keep a map in hand, it comes pretty handy especially when you are not familiar with the names of the suburbs.

I have send an email to them and they just say applicants will be notified if they are accepted.I guess i have no chance to stay there.

I have a rough idea where to stay.Kingsford or something is the best since it's the closest with my faculty.Randwrick is ok too.

If that is the case, then it's quite unlikely you will get a place there for this semester if you still haven't receive any notification from them yet.
Kingsford, Randwick and Kensington are the nearest suburbs around uni, but be prepared to pay a higher rent for rooms in these suburbs.
City area is a good alternative too if you don't mind traveling about 15-20minutes by bus to uni everyday.

Oh before I reply,

Degree: Bachelor of Business (Graduated in 2006)
Uni: University of Technology Sydney
City: Sydney
State: New South Wales
Country: Australia-lah tongue.gif

Kingsford is actually RIGHT next to the UNSW campus and its a heaven for international Uni students coming from Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Malaysia and Indonesia.

The business district of the Kingsford surburb has a lot of Asian grocery stores (Japanese owned) and eateries (mostly Indonesian-Chinese owned) and if you're on campus hostel stay you are lucky that you are able to procure items to cook or to eat.

Distance of Kingsford from the city centre is roughly 15-20 minutes by bus ride (their public transportation is much much more better than M'sian ones.

Randwick however is a bit farther than Kingsford so you got to map out a transport route to get your way to Uni.

UNSW is a pretty good choice for engineering. They have the largest engineering faculty in Aus and that means they have better facilities and teaching resource for engineering compare to other uni.

It's just my 2 cents.Do correct me if im wrong.

^^ Nope, you're absolutely right on that. And NOT only Mech Eng, Architecture Degree is also reknowned in UNSW.

On walking from Randwick, it should be fine as long as you stay on the southern side of Randwick as it faces the northern part of UNSW.

Kingsford should be south of UNSW if I remembered correctly. There is also another surburb, Kensington which is on the western side of UNSW.

Yes you can, you'll save up the effort to climb through flight of stairs if your classes are spread across the upper campus. But since you're in engineering, I would doubt so as most of your classes will mostly in the lower campus.

Hi,
As posted on that thread, I think it would better if we split up the thread (v1) into few portion and gathers relevant data from it.

For example:-

Page 1-25(me)
Page 26-50 (you) and so on..

I could help you about 75pages (and could start by tonight).

anyone wanna join the boat ?

Awww nuts. Gone for just one day and this happens?

I suggest we make some ground rules for people wanting to use this thread. Questions are no doubt welcome, but they must me logical and only after they have done their homework. I suggest some rules on the front page. I'd contribute some:

1)At least use proper spelling and capitalisation, even if your English is not at a standard you want it to be. No shortform lik dis. U wan help, u ask 4 help prply. Seriously, there is no reason to use shortform. You have a nice ASCII keyboard, not a keypad, and heres reason #1 to use Firefox: it comes with a built in spell checker.

2)Read the front page first! I suggest changing the sub-heading to "Read rules on first page" from "coming, in, be Australia...". (On the sidelines, I'd try to help out this weekend. No easy through; Chinese New Year coming up)

3)Do your homework. Don't come up to this thread and ask: how much does it cost to go to Australia. Australia is a very big place. You'd probably be able to live on $10/day in the middle of nowhere, but that cant get a decent meal in Sydney. Drill down to at least a specific city. As a general rule of thumb, all universities(worth our money) would have a page outlining the general costs of living. They tend to err on the high side, but use it as a guide.

4)Drop your sifu mentality. None of us here are experts. All we have behind our screen names is the privilege living in Australia for an extended period of time. Use us as a rough guide, not a hard set of rules.

5)Scholarships. Everyone wants one. Few of us have one. This forum is not to spoon feed you what scholarships there are. All universities have a link for that. Look for yourselves. We will not anwser questions like "im thinkin of takin engineering in UQ could anyone give me a reference abt any scholarships?" (even ignoring the language). We will however, try our best to anwser something like "The Sony Multimedia foundation scholarship in QUT: what are my chances?"

I think a quote from Limeuu is in order here:
QUOTE
i have said this many times, the oz unis now want to MAKE money from you, not give you money.........there are some scholarships around, but they are all merit based, so you really need to be one of the top applicants or students to get it..........

this generation is born 20 years too late..........you parents will have had, or had, free or subsidised education from the generous oz taxpayers...........

6)Some of us in this forum are frank and direct. We will give you the real deal, not sugarcoated. If you can't handle it, go somewhere else. We are here to help, not "mollycoodle" (Clinton's words in his 92 campaign) anyone.

7)Cant understand what we're saying? Befuddled over the word you just saw? Here's a google trick: type "define: Befuddled" (or whatever word you don't understand, without the quote marks) into google. (You'll be surprised how many people don't know, or are just too plain lazy, to use this feature.)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On another issue, I'd suggest grouping where we are by cities. Say:

Brisbane
Haya (Bachlelor of something, Queensland University of Technology)

Perth
onelove89 (Some course, some university)
(Hope you don't mind onelove89 happy.gif)

And for those who are not in currently present in Australia, but know a bit about it:
Omnipresent
Limeuu

This should make it easier for people to ask us about a specific university and/or course.

I know this sounds daft, but can we throw in a map of Australia, preferably Asia-Pacific, to show some people where Australia is, and where is it in relation to Malaysia? Don't laugh: you know our education system has failed when people ask me "when is it winter in Bangkok?" and think they can "hop step jump to the UK in 3 hrs from Australia". I knew we should have kept Geography as a compulsory until Form 5.............................

Also, maybe an explanation on the different plug system of Australia may be in order. Feel free to use my explanation at the Studying In New Zealand thread.

Anything I missed?

Not very sure but UNSW was the best in engineering for past few years till Melbourne Uni come and trash it last year.

It's second best now. cry.gif

Still, rankings still doesnt matters much. What matters is you yourself, not the university. From what i heard, going to a good uni is just to have a little bit of head start in your career. No point going to MIT to slack and get kick out.

That's not the way to see it. The rankings fluctuate from year to year because of various factors, the main thing being the number of research papers published, amount of research funding gained, etc. UNSW is still a heavyweight in Engineering education here and still attracts some of the best talents in this area. It has an excellent reputation in the industry.

Melb Uni's new engineering program structure ('The Melbourne Model') which they're implementing from this year onwards has caused quite a few raised eyebrows. I doubt they'll be voted top engineering school for the next few years.

The Melbourne Model was one of the reasons that put me off, other than cost which is 20% more than UNSW.I dont want to study biology or economics in uni.

The daunting task....
I usually use a piece of paper or a spreadsheet program to draw up the time columns and then use http://www.timetable.unsw.edu.au to view the times for subjects and mark them accordingly.
Alternatively open two tabs, one with the blank timetable and another with the enrolment tab and then try to fit in the times.
Whatever you do, do not ever use Auto Timetable. The computer-generated random allocation system will give you really poor scheduling.
