Prepare to wait several weeks for a Malaysian bank draft to clear if you deposit it here. Not to mention that if you lose the bank draft, you're screwed.

I recommend that you bring over maybe AU$500 in cash, and wire transfer (TT) the rest of it after you've opened a bank account. It takes only a few (3?) days to clear, and it's also very safe.

HSDPA/3.5G should net you about 100-150ms ping to the base station. UMTS/3G fares a little worse at 250-300ms.

Forcing a phone to GSM mode has its own set of problems. 1) Very slow speed, 2) RF buzz when you use your phone near unshielded amplifiers, 3) temporary data disconnection when a call comes in.

Do you guys know if the ISIC card is an acceptable proof of age to be served alcohol in Australia?

My 18th is coming soon...
*

No it isn't. Use your passport for now. Next time you can get a driver learner's permit or a proof-of-age card (from the police station).

Hey guys, where do you guys get the adapter that are used to plug into the socket shown in page 1?

I found the traveling one but I read that the traveling one is not supposed to be used permanently as it might caught fire.

So where do I get the adapter which has a permanent pin that fits into the socket shown in page 1 ?
*

It shouldn't catch fire under normal circumstances. Don't plug high-wattage equipment into it, i.e. anything that generates lots of heat (heater, hair drier, kettle..).

If you want to rip out your existing plugs and replace them with the aussie one, you can get them from Big W or other hardware shops. Takes just a few minutes to change them.

I'm traveling to Melbourne,Glen Waverly but on a tight budget.
So the plan is to take Air Asia promo flight to Gold Coast.
*

You might find that traveling Jetstar works out better. It's not unreasonably expensive (unless you have one of those RM1 air asia tickets), you don't have to work out the connecting flights yourself, and best of all you travel through the international airports. As opposed to low cost terminals. Brr.

Melbourne is exceptionally not recommended, because you can't do a computer science degree by its own starting 2009.
*

Exceptionally disrecommended?

When you said a CS degree "on it's own" I suppose you were referring to the Bachelor of CS that will be discontinued in 2009. Can you tell us the difference between that and the Bachelor of Science (CS) that is earmarked to replace it?
