The auto timetable doesnt work at all for me.

Anyway, managed to arrange a time table without any clash and wasted 3 pieces of paper. It's really a daunting task.

The timetable for Period 1 is ok,im just worry about the Period 2 one. It's gonna be even daunting to arrange it.

Only tuesday gonna be a bit tiring.Classes are quite long on that day.Dunno why they put all the surveying classes together. Some more one lecture take 4 hours. In the end, lunch on 4 o'clock.

Melbourne Model is designed so students have diversity in their knowledge.
They are trying to implement the US education format in australia and it is believed that several universities will follow suit.

i heard about the expensive course fees for the melbourne model but i cannot be too sure of it.

so bottom line is
1. if u want a more diverse field of study, then melbourne model is the way to go
2. if u are not interested in other fields of studies then look elsewhere.

and just so u know if you are planning to take engineering in melbourne uni, i believe there is still an option where u dont have to take the melbourne model and you just need to sign up for its traditional 4 years course structure.

It's not, considering you get a postgraduate degree out of it. An equivalent undergraduate + Masters course will cost approximately the same.

Hmm add realestate.com.au as another site to use for properties.

How about a brief introduction to what studying in Aus is all about, the tech unis, Go8, culture etc.

Here is the list of tuition fees in Australia Universities for year 2008:

For Engineering courses only (in AUD$)

ANU 22800
Melbourne 27850
Sydney 24720
UNSW 24960
UQ 22750
Monash 25800
Adelaide 20600
UWA 23000
UniSA 19050
Tasmania 16000

Apparently Melbourne is significantly higher than other universities, higher than UNSW for about 15% and higher than the average for about 25%. The cheapest option will be Tasmania. haha

about accomodation for UNSW students:

realestate.com.au is the best site to look out for houses..cuz they have the biggest database..getting the house you want can be very competitive at times..and point system is implemented to determine who will get the house..

about the suburbs..it depends on a few factors:

price: randwick houses are more expensive than in kingsford, this is because it is nearer to supermarkets-namely coles/woolies..

so its important to have a good look at the campus map, and to know where would be the place you would have your classes..and it is better to enrol in classes where the venue are nearby..if not you would have to climb the !@#$%^&* university walk/basser steps (can be useful to slim down, lol)..

if you dont mind travelling, kingsford is ok..though the security is not as good as in randwick..and both kingsford and randwick have asian stores to get asian foodstuff..maroubra junction can be a very nice place to live in too..its pretty convenient over there..just like randwick..just that you will need to dip a blue travel ten which costs $1.36 (around there) to get to uni by bus..

about engineering courses:

unsw engineering just got ranked first (if you really want to talk about ranking) on 2008 gooduniversity guide..but unsw has been famous for its engineering..so if you like sydney..unsw is a good place to do engineering..

to other forumers: i can give advice on anything you would like to know about jpa scholarship-on whats covered/whats not/bonds and stuff..

all in all i think aus is a nice place! =)

Melb Uni's new engineering program structure ('The Melbourne Model') which they're implementing from this year onwards has caused quite a few raised eyebrows. I doubt they'll be voted top engineering school for the next few years.
*
Thats a harsh thing to say. Learning breadth subjects will enable a student to think wider. Engineering is about creativity in designing, solving problems..etc and I think learning something out of engineering will HELP the students design something which is more OUT OF THE BOX. In time, I do think the Melbourne Model is quite an effective move. Undergraduate studies lets a student choose a pathway and postgraduate enables specialization.

Go explore! Walk down Swanston Street to the city or hop on a tram(make sure you have a Metcard) Go to Melb Central, get some krispy kremes.... biggrin.gif

Or, you could go explore Melbourne Uni (not recommended as you *might* get lost without a guide)

But, it ain't hard to get lost in Melbourne City as everything is in square, rectangular boxes. Most of the roads are parallel.
