after reading all the 6 pages, this hamster thread is one of the best in LYN. informative and not too many spams..

few years back, my family bought 5 syrian hamster and fit it all in a habitrail safari cage.. 2 male and 3 females.. since i'm not that grown up at that time, i dont really now that hamster will breed at such speed and everything messed up. i'm able to get few of them to grow and last for 2 years.. they live happily and passed away happily also, they have their own grave though side by side at my grandma's garden..lolx

that was a 2 years of fun and satisfaction. and what you guys said is true. I have to buy 1 more cage to separate them. thats was few years ago.

but after visiting pet family today to buy some dog stuffs, had a glance at the hamster section. those cute lil robo is cute, i'm poisoned!! arrgghh.. I want to start back this hobby.. not syrian anymore, i wan cuter ROBO.

planing to get 2 or 3 though. any advise for a person who is starting back the hobby.. i need to get new cage though, i threw away the 2 old cages. can you guys give me a rough costs, habitrail mini, water bottle, lots of bedding?? where is the cheapest place to shop for all this? i live in puchong..

and ya, habitrail comes with the wheel? any other accessory included?

thanks a lot guys!!!

thanks

You should get a 2 feet tank instead of a habitrail tank. It is more roomy for 2-3 robos to run around.

I would recommend you go to Pet Shack in Sunway Mentari to get all your tank, bedding, etc. It's just behind McD. Service is excellent. You can get all the below from Pet Shack.

Here is a rough of what you should get:
2 feet tank
Pretige Hamster Food
Bedding - Breeder Celect or Aspen or Corncob. Never get pine shavings as it is bad for small animals' lungs.
Timothy Hay can use as bedding and food
Wheel - Sanko Wild Silent Wheel for dwarfs or Habitrail Safari/Playground Wheel
Hamster house wood or ceramic or plastic.
Water bottle
Hamster Toilet
Toilet/bath sand
Food bowl
exercise ball

anyway get the same sex for all 2-3 robos you are getting.

ok.i have another question , if i want to have 2 hamster or more , how will i make them not fight?if i cant stop them from fighting , how do they make new babies?XD
*
Your pic shows a syrian..... you do know syrians cannot stay in pairs rite?

If you want to breed, do research but if you plan to breed just for fun or seeing a hamster family, then that is a wrong reason. You will only be doing more harm than good. So many people are spoiling the market price, also breeding many inbred hamsters coz they get 2 hamsters to breed from the same shop, breeder or supplier/location.... then also many are breeding low quality hamsters.

QUOTE(frostfox @ Jan 12 2008, 07:29 PM)
the classic habitrails:)they were the first cage i used..then my hamster went missing..NOO!!lol

Added on January 12, 2008, 7:33 pm

sorry for the double post but how did these hamsters live together?
*
Only siblings can live together like that peacefully but they will fight and squabble once a while. The best is keeping them ALONE.

QUOTE(frostfox @ Jan 12 2008, 07:55 PM)
NO , im just asking it as a question..i got no intention of breeding a syrian , but maybe another type..if i learn more about it first wink.gif
*
Dwarf hamsters are never easy to breed. Firstly, you can't tell if the female is on heat, unlike the syrian. Then, if they hate each other, they would fight to death. Some are not compatible so they can live happily but will not breed.

If breed... you must know when is the best age, you can only breed 3 times max, if you breed more, you end the female's life by half.... there are so many facts to consider if you are not experience in keeping a hamster properly.

QUOTE(a13solut3 @ Jan 12 2008, 08:37 PM)
Wow hamster can mass produce baby in just few weeks? I rather let them be alone than rather breed them.. Especially when do not noe how to breed them, will cause more casualty..
*
Hamsters are sexually mature at 5 weeks but they can breed every 20 days, this causes their bodies to suffer and die before they reach 1 year old.

QUOTE(EReeN @ Jan 12 2008, 08:51 PM)
huuwaa cry.gif  i got da lesson now "never leave ur hamster in the car"~~

anothe que..

my hamser body become "yellow" in color at her ass

why haa??? hmm.gif

i try to cuci with da hamster shampoo but the yellow color still cannot remove
*
Yellow is the scent gland and pee. If the ass, more towards pee. And now, it is a stain in the fur, you cannot remove even if you cuci with whitening shampoo. Please do not give any wet shampoo bath to a hamster. It could fall sick if you are unlucky and didn't do it properly.

QUOTE(frostfox @ Jan 12 2008, 09:54 PM)
hey..one time i didnt know anything about hamster and i put 2 white hamsters together for a week , one day i found the girl hamster breathing very slowly and she couldnt move , her ass was a kind of black color (abnormal color)and it was like she was gonna die..I tried taking here to the vet but was pronounced dead when i arrived there
*
Reanne said dried blood. I would say it could have been gangrene. Winter Whites never do well in pairs if they are not brothers or sisters. So never have 2 WW. Keep 1 is the best. Only Russian Campbells do well in pairs.

You mean you bought hamsters without knowing the species? That is very risky....

Good big wheels would be Sanko Wild 21cm Silent Wheel or Habitrail Safari or Playground wheels. Just to let you know that the bigger the wheel the more expensive it will get. But the Habitrail wheels are the cheapest.

Just to let you know, unfortunately, the Habitrail Safari Wheel has been discontinued.

The thing I was pointing out was that you didn't really need to ask if you looked at it 1st.... but if you bought before joining this forum, means you didn't do any species research at all?..... I mean, there are search engines like Yahoo and Google rite? I'm not pointing fingers or anything but you don't need to know a species by joining a forum. If you really love your pet, you would have researched 1st or right after you bought or something.....

There's still have one of the Habitrail Safari Wheel in one the pet stall in Giant Cheras. It's cost aroung RM16-Rm18 if I'm not mistaken. No more stock after all the left over sold, according to the shop keeper as well.

#Enferno:
Get all same sex for your robos. Buy a 2 feet tank is better as those pet shop people will recommend u to buy Habitrail Mini, playground or Safari, but my experience will advise you for a 2 feet tank. Go to Pet Shack for the tank as they'll drill a hole for the water bottle. Get your hamster stuff from there, I think they should have enough choices for you. Or else go to Pet Lover Center in Sunway Pyramid but the price will be bit more expensive. Do not get the package things from a pet stall cos they'll only give you cheap or low quality stuffs although you can get it much more cheaper and complete but not good for hamster. Will suggest you to get those as listed below as I'm currently have 2 robos too thumbup.gif

- 2 feet tank
- Prestige Hamster food
- Habitrail water bottle
- Food bowl x2 (1 for mixed food & 1 for fresh veges) - (suggest to u for 2 as I'll prefer to pt 2 kind of food separately for hygienic purposes)
- Bedding - Breeder Celect / Corncobs / Healthy Pets recycle paper bedding / Timothy hay (this can use as bedding, food and cover smells) <remember do not get pine wood shavings>
- Wheel (Habitrail Safari Wheel / Silent wheel
- A hamster toilet
- Toilet or litter sand
- Bathing sand
- Some tubes and connectors (if you wanna give them some fun with tubes) - go for the Habitrail Mini tubes

You can look at my attached pic as get a rough idea how its look like:
Attached Image Attached Image

you can also add some other accessories as u get a 2 feet tank as its spacious enough to do so. Good luck for you biggrin.gif

I strongly discourage to support big pet shop like the one in MV cos its very bad conditions for all the hamsters and the pets as well. Worse I've seen cry.gif cry.gif cry.gif After all the pet shops hopping, I'll prefer to go to those pet shops with not so bad conditions or small pet shop like PS as they really take care of their pets. Price??? few ringgit do not make any different for me as if you buy more in a small pet shop, you'll always get some discount with the good service, why not? And we should support those good pet shops so that they can do better. Big pet shop that u can go to is Pet Lover Center (SP), Pet Safari (Ikano), this 2 I'll suggest u if u wanna get hamster stuffs. Above is just what I personal opinion - support good pet shop!

No it's not Pet Safari in Taman Megah. Pet Safari is in Ikano.

That is Pets Family in Taman Megah. The ground floor is more for aquatic pets whereas the 1st floor is for cat, dogs, birds and small animals. But sadly their small animals accessories are quite limited if compared to Pets Lover Center in SP. But you can get all the Habitrail stuffs there as they have a lot there.
