QUOTE
Robert Neville (Will Smith) is a brilliant scientist, but even he could not contain the terrible virus that was unstoppable, incurable, and man-made. Somehow immune, Neville is now the last human survivor in what is left of New York City and maybe the world. For three years, Neville has faithfully sent out daily radio messages, desperate to find any other survivors who might be out there. But he is not alone. Mutant victims of the plague -- The Infected -- lurk in the shadows... watching Neville's every move... waiting for him to make a fatal mistake. Perhaps mankind's last, best hope, Neville is driven by only one remaining mission: to find a way to reverse the effects of the virus using his own immune blood. But he knows he is outnumbered... and quickly running out of time.

I like I-Robot biggrin.gif

I think its Will that made a movie to become super awesome.
He's got that funny-tough guy-mancho-rapper-type that most action heroes now are lacking thumbup.gif

The best part of it -- most of the time, he knows what movie to pick to suit his best acting, and I'm glad he had comfortably position himself in the action-science fiction movies rclxm9.gif

I don't like Will Smith because he plays the same character in every movie.

His limited range is boring me to death.

"The Omega Man is a 1971 science fiction thriller starring Charlton Heston. The movie is based on Richard Matheson's 1954 novel, I Am Legend. The screenplay was written by John William and Joyce Corrington, and the movie was directed by Boris Sagal. It was filmed in technicolor with mono sound and ran for 98 minutes. The movie received a MPAA rating of PG in the U.S. The story was first filmed in 1964, under the title The Last Man on Earth, with Vincent Price in the lead role. A third adaptation of the story, I Am Legend, starring Will Smith, is scheduled for release on December 14, 2007." quote from Wikipedia

oh yea it is somehow based on I Am Legend, but a different approach.. ? rclxub.gif

hmm, after watchin the movie, i tot the novel's plot (which i read at wikipedia) would've been better.

this movie just made the monsters appear as monsters. according to the book, they were much more than that. and they were vampiric. not these cross breeds of zombies from 28 days later n Imhotep.

the movie's plot could've been better if only will smith went ape shit more, u know, with him thinking he was the last man on earth. he could've been more paranoid/neurotic like brad pitt in 12 monkeys (yeah, BP was the bomb in that movie!).

it just didn't give the "oh no wonder it's called this title" feel as in the book.

It's like the other version of Resident Evil, people get virus created by man, kill most of the people in the world (or at least turn it into undead demon)

kinda dissapointing to me.
it feels at times during the movie, that the plot is lost as in lost it's way.
the ending was so abrupt.

maybe shouldnt have expected too much.

7/10.

It looks like remake of 'The Omega Man' which itself is a medicore-action film but the newer one has less action-scene. *SPOILER*:

What I like about this movie:
1. CG. The scene of New York city in ruins is probably the most memorable stage. A must for every hardcore post-apocalyptic fanatics laugh.gif
2. The emotion of protagonist facing loneliness while hoping to find other living human.
3. Arnold Schwarzenegger is not in. Seriously, if he's in, it might turn into a 'zombie-killing with tons of ammunition and bomb movie'

What I don't like about this movie:
1. Cheesy humor.
2. Cheesy creature design (what not vampire?!)
3. Ridley Scott is not the director. I like his style which use lots of smoke to create a blur and foggy atmosphere.
4. The ending feels like the end of a MTV (not surprisingly the director begins his carrier directing MTV)

* means Similarities with the novel
^means Dissimilarity with the novel

-*Protagonist use the same name.
^Both are different races.

-*^There is a normal dog.

-*^The dog died.

-*^Main character is trying to find a cure with different results.
(Novel one didn't find any cure, movie one found the cure)

-*^Sunlight kills.

-*In the novel, garlic is used.
^In the movie, detergent is used to cover the odor of living one.

-*Music is played in both version, but ^different genre. (classical in novel while Reggae yes Reggae )

-*^Both final scene happened in the safe place of protagonist.

The plot was actually very interesting. This is among the movies that will keep me thinking even after watching it. I'll always wonder what would I do if I were in Will Smith's shoes.

Anyways, the story was a bit slow and dragging, but the action and surprises were superb. Its really ironic to have a story like this to end in less than 2 hours. It has so much potential, and I feel that the female survivor and her son didnt have enough exposure in the story to evolve. As well as the Darkseeker leader, he plays a really scary role, I really wish the story would have something more of what he fits in the whole story.

Plus, the cure! Darn, so surprised the movie could actually hid the nipples! Anyways, i was abit confusing when will said that the cure was in the cured zombie blood instead of his. I suppose the cure was an evolved mix of will's blood and the zombie.

I really wished the story would be alot longer to allow a better storyline. Or perhaps it is possible to make a sequel?

yes i'm disappointed
if following the plot from the book, they could've lengthen it to at least 2hrs +

now its a crappy 1hr40mins show

the book is way better as the title "i am legend" is clearly understandable why.

but in this show, the title doesn't really potray him

not much action, not much legend, not much heroic action

however WILL SMITH saved the movie, if it wasn't him, the movie could have been 1/10

u guys probably expected a kill n hunt movie. lol

I rate this movie 9/10! its a great movie. the style of the movie evolves around the idea on HOW MANKIND IS DESTROYING the world....and how HOPE & FAITH could bring back the peace we're looking for. people sometimes tend to have the same idea that if its a sci-fi movie, its suppose to be blowing things or laser sh*ts...lol I rate this highly for movie fans who doesnt expect the norm.

yea.. guess the title anticipated ppl for a lot of actions.
somehow its more to understanding how a sole person on earth feels, what he does everyday, feel his pain

will smith potrays excellent as a character as he can make ppl feel his pain and suffering

excellent actor

The idea was brilliant, the scene in New York City, the grass, abandon looks .....everything is so good in the begining. In overall, I perfectly satisfy with this movie, but when it come to the end, it dropped so sudden. A bit disappointed at the ending.

It was a good movie, Will Smith did a great job in his character. Most of us get so excited when he in the dark saving "sam" from the hive.

I will love this movie more if the ending is not so "legend"

In my point of view is a nice movie, some people hate it because they expected is good action movie but it is not lar...Will Smith also done a good job by showing his fear when he enter to find sam in the dark building(really really good)

I rated 3.5 out of 5

And i must say is way better then the 3 stupid episode of resident evil...In the resident evil game, the main character is more similar to will smith...But the movie show the woman is so strong that can beat zombie -.-"(suck)

thought the movie was so-so. opening sequence rocked but after that, it felt stagnant. I would definitely recommend it to everyone because

1) Grade A actor
2) Decent action movie

but after watching Bourne Ultimatum, nothing satisfies me that much anymore.

the movie doesn't really sync wif the trailer...
the trailer makes me feel it's like a fast-paced action movie...
but infact, it was a rather slow-paced more like novelty movie...

before this i google it and read the wikipedia of it...
and so had some idea in my head...but when watched the movie...
aik...different...

will try to find the story book and read it...bet the book gonna be more interesting...

The book usually is better than the movie. Even reading LOTR beats 10x better than the movie (I loved the movie still!).

Yea, I think you shouldn't have any expectation from the movie, then you'll surely have a good impression about it. Usually, our expectation from this sort of movie, looking at its trailer first would be something of a fast paced action, bombs and lasers and some superpower magnificent granted to the hero.

If I was a 17 year old boy, I might think this movie suxx, but thanks to maturity and some bit of wisdom, I can learn to see and understand what the director want to show in the movie. Its quite interesting to be frank. Well, I must admit its not the strongest title movie for this Christmas, but I'm glad I watched it. I might consider watching it again, but only with someone who is into this kind of movies....the revealing kinds. tongue.gif

I love this movie , man !
Will Smith's actings ROX !
Not only the actions , but his facial expressions also pretty good.
I kinda felt his actual feelings that he is going through when that scene Sam died.

Btw , I am 17 and I think this movie ROCKS ! biggrin.gif

This movie is super boring.Watch this movie only if you are a diehard Will Smith fan.

From start to end he and his dog are walking around town searching for "guinea pigs" for his experiment in his quest to find the cure for the virus.

A little bit of action here and there, but not enough to cover up for the whole movie which is so so slow.

he needs to hunt for meat.

about the lions, he didn't shoot because there's a family of lions there... everyone is fighting for survival you see...

the cure is in the blood of his human specimen. i can't remember the serum name, but that is the reversal antidote to the virus, which the scientists in the living colony will use to cure the dark seekers.

great great movie, up my ass fantasy genres, science-fiction still ownz...
Sam died trying to save his master, what a moment, Will Smith protrayal of man on the edge of insanity due to isolation is just superb..., but yes u guys can argue about the weak ending and sfx, but still I think this movie is the best one for the year 2007 (IMHO)...

Those who liked it caught on and appreciated the tension and atmosphere the director was shooting for. And boy, did Will Smith deliver. A solid movie for the more appreciative crowd. Those looking for a superhero, run n gun zombie/vampire fest will be sorely dissapointed.

1. Too much 'ogre' to be gunned down. The best part is they've got themselves a group leader?! WTF
2. Sam did a great job. It's tragic Robert has to kill Sam by his own hands.
3. Heart-poppin scene. F*** it my popcorn was on the floor.
4. The cure's usefulness is a mystery. Dark seekers will never sit down nicely and negotiate with you. They do not understand. They bite.
5. If not a movie, KV is coming soon in town and still HIV don't have any cure.
6. So we learn to practise Bob Marley and Shrek more often. biggrin.gif

6/10

Will Smith worths everything. THERE IS NO GOD out there. thumbup.gif

I've liked Will Smith ever since the first time I see him goofing around in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. I'm glad that he turned out good.

Another thing is, don't some of you guys know how to use the spoiler tag? Don't freakin spoil it for others who haven't watch the movie yet.

Feel the movie sucks and didn't deliver. Feel the crowd was disappointing with the ending. He should not die, he supposed to kick those darkseeker ass and made it to safety. Crowd hate when superhero like Will to die. If they want to put a sooftie, put Bruce Wills or Leonardo to die.

The movie did tell u how people get infected by the virus, how k9 get infected by it but for the wild animals i don't know will they get infected or not. U just need some concentration on what they talking not by just watching at the movie only.

This movie was kinda interesting but a lot of censored scene cut off. A 2 hour movie turn become 1 hour 45 min. Maybe buy ahem would be better choice.

Personally,i feel this movie is simply not to what i thought it would be...I was hoping for something more..but when i saw another human being there,i knew what will happen next.So predictable.

Smith is great,i like his acting skills. But uh,i can only give 5/10. Nothing much from this movie.Everything seems average all the way.

I somewhat agree with the other humans part.It would've been so much better(for me) if he was alone all the way,and maybe gets companion from

Like it or not. They have to end to story like the book.

Awesome show.
However, i prefer Will Smith to be more cuckoo and depressed in the movie.

The only thing that doesn't make sense to me is, how could there be a leader in the darkseekers? Will Smith is saying that they have lost all their human abilities etc when they came rushing out to the UV lights but they can still lead?

One point that is good enough for me that makes this show good is Will Smith's great acting skills. His expression is just marvelous. Overall, a good movie and better than Resident Evil for me..LOL..

he did try to stand up at first didn't he? The pain from the trap is probably too much for him to handle...especially since he just woke up from being hung upside down for so long. You can't blame him there. After seeing the danger...adrenaline kicks in and he forced himself to hop on one leg.

Kena grenade in the face...you call that die too easy? sweat.gif

its still a dissappointment to me....

i was hoping for a better ending.........but that ending really not good enuf....

somemore....why must the director use CGI on the darkseekers?? seriously i think the effect would be better if they hire a good makeup artist and make some more horrible looking darkseekers would really put a good touch to the movie...i dun remember there were many scenes wif huge numbers of darkseekers except the highway truck knock-out part which is also not many of them in fact.....so why the CGI??

but these darkseekers are.....skinned and paled like an eel.... aside from being quick and fast....there are really nothing much to awe about the darkseekers....they look too fake to me.....

don't forget that they're strong...headbutt the SUV till it almost fall into the river sweat.gif

ah, maybe that's why they use CGI...nobody wants to actually headbutt a car laugh.gif
and if you think about it...some scenes are really difficult to do in real life - Holding onto the ceiling, jumping to the 2nd floor, climbing the building etc...

after he was caught hanging upside down for such a long time, i'm sure his legs would be very numb and not able to move for a while. wink.gif

@maximus85: yeah i too hated the fact that they decide to use full CGI for the darkseekers. sweat.gif

they will not be a sequel.....

but probably a prequel that leads to the final outcome.....since the movie did not actually tells us wat happened that caused the catastrophe....

it also happened in all other monster movie such as Resident Evil...shout first than attack?

dogs can come out during eveing, human cannot,

IMO, this movie is not for ah beng, at 1st i though is was a action movie like resident evil, but not, u need to use your brain to study this movie, not like some action move while u just sit relex and watch.

i think this is a good movie, with moral for u to understand,

I've liked Will Smith ever since the first time I see him goofing around in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. I'm glad that he turned out good.

Another thing is, don't some of you guys know how to use the spoiler tag? Don't freakin spoil it for others who haven't watch the movie yet.

Haha you also got watch "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air"? At that time will smith still a youngster that joke around but now he is father already...

In this movie got a part that he was shouting at the puppet "FRED WHY ARE YOU OUT HERE"? to think back if a man live alone for such a long time sure will gone mad when his puppet is move away by ??? (i like that part too)

Watched on yesterday. The outcome is not really what I thought of. And the action wasn't much enough tho. I was expecting some fight with the darkseekers, more actions. But overall is okay. But I always scare if the doll actually talks. That would be very freaky!! laugh.gif When he kill his dog, I almost cried. cry.gif So sad to kill someone you love so much.

The action part was second in this movie. Not a fanboyism here but, with great acting, Will Smith manages to catch audience attention to share his emotions and feelings. Superb performance and acting skills. He lived up the movie. He's the man. thumbup.gif

i think this is a good movie, with moral for u to understand,

i just watched this movie and although at first it was kinda boring, but after finished watching it i can say it's a nice movie.. and i think i can watch it again on dvd biggrin.gif

will smith is definitely a good actor.. although most of the time he only talked with himself or with his lovely dog, but he manages to make it happening.. with a lil bit joke and stimes touching feeling..

and i wonder why the hell in my cinema everyone was laughing when he killed sam.. LOL

act talking alone or with a dog is not that hard..

acting with a non existing object like CGI is much2 more harder.. stimes director replace the character with a person wearing a green / blue costume .. that is okey, but if the director ask the actor / actresses to just imagine sthing is there, it's damn hard to get the feeling.. esp when it involves a lot of movement and eye contact...

It is a pretty good movie and it definitely paint a picture of what life is like to be hopelessly isolated and completely deprived of human communication and interaction. Will Smith's portrayal of emotional instability and desperation for human contact is just brilliant.
of course couple of explanations such as how did the supposed cancer cure related to people turning into effected and mutated being, how did Robert Neville managed to survive throughout and how did he learn that those mutated being will only roam the streets at night and is vulnerable to sunlight could have given a more in-depth understanding but I suppose all of these loopholes is best left for our imagination to connect the story. The pace was just nice and there are certain moments in the movie that got me.
on another note, this movie triggered me to think hard about how human will pay all the attention to what is remaing with him or her when all else are taken away such as sam. I guess it is when all things are taken away that we start to value them the most and will probably risk our life to make sure that nothing happens to the last thing that is yet to be taken away from us.
just a thought.

I think the anti-climax + sudden death ending isnt on everyone's mind. Most would be expecting a good fight from Sam but instead he sacrifice himself together with the darkseekers. Thats so anti climax... and I was thinking man, how is he gonna finish the fight. Aww...

Probably that'sbecause we are all so used to the usual Hollywood brand of ending. Rambo taking on the entire battalion of army and walk out the victor.

I thought the last part where

Just came back from the cinema. What I can say is it's not quite the typical "zombie" movie I was expecting where the main actor goes slashing and trashing up every undead. Instead, it was an interesting and refreshing style... I LIKE IT! rclxms.gif

I would give this movie a 9/10, good intense action at times, yet being emotional and powerful. Very good combination nod.gif

My turn for a review on this movie. Hehe, haven't really done movie reviews for almost a year now. Didn't really watch many movies this year thanks to the ever rising RM-AUD exchange rate.

Let's start with the storyline. My initial view on the concept of "the last surviving human" is that it's a really good concept to elaborate on. A bit like "Unbreakable". However when I found out that it involves zombies/vampires I sort of felt apprehensive about it due to my bad experience with movies such as Resident Evil. I was worried that it might turn out to be just another typical hollywood action flick where the hero/heroine takes on an entire army of gnarled humanoids. The poster where Will Smith carries a badass rifle didn't help either.

Nevertheless, my worries turned out to be redundant. This is by no means an full-fledged action movie, despite having loads of gun shooting and fights. I don't really know what genre it should be classified as - Drama? Not really, since there's virtually zero character interaction. Sci-fi? Not exactly, since there ain't much scientific explantions nor are there any fancy tech. If anything, I felt that this movie resembles "War Of The Worlds", where it focuses more on human characters and emotions with an action-themed/scifi setting.

Never mind, genres don't really matter.

Character-wise, meh... there's only one true character and that's Robert Neville. There's nothing new or interesting about this character anyway - Family loving guy losing his loved ones, lonely outcast hell bent on saving the world, all action hero with tons of muscles, and of course sacrificing himself to save all humanity. He does show signs of weakness such as his fears for the zombies and his apparent loneliness, but we've all seen characters like this, haven't we?

This is not to say that Robert is a poor character, in fact it's pretty decent, but compared to superb complex characters like those in The Prestige (yes, I can't stop praising this movie) it's fairly mundane.

Will Smith. Ah... the saviour of this movie. His acting is undoubtedly top notch in this movie, especially for someone who will always be associated with the words "slick", "smooth", and "cool". I haven't seen his earlier work "The Pursuit of Happyness", but previously Will has always given the impression of a tough guy. In this movie, his portrayal of a desperate yet lonely hero on the verge of losing his faith and sanity was indeed impressive. I would say his best part in this movie was when Sam ran into the dark warehouse, and Robert was forced to enter. His expression of fear gave me the sense of horror much more than the disfigured creatures did.

About his portrayal of loneliness and yearning for human contract? That was good, but I dare say that Tom Hanks did much better in "Castaway". I felt more pity and compassion for Hanks than Will when comparing both movies. Overall, the theme of "sole mankind" in "Castaway" was much better done than "I Am Legend".

Other characters were merely stand-ins. Can't say much for Sam, (hehe, she's a dog what do you expect?) while Anna and Robert's family got too little screen time to make an impact. The zombies? Apart from being annoying I don't find them giving me any psychological scares. In other words... meh... not horrifying enough. I'd love to shove a grenade down their throats for screaming so much dry.gif

Speaking of the zombies, I'd like to see more of them for example how they managed to survive, how savage they were especially when hunting etc. And I cheered when Robert got trapped by his own method - It means that they might have some intelligence after all instead of being mindless beasts. Yet as the movie unveiled they were merely dumbasses with a lot of brute strength and speed yet not having any brains.

Now for cinematography. The CGIs were well done, yet nothing spectacular like Transformers (I didn't really like that movie despite it being well made but that's for another day). Action scenes weren't particularly well too. The harbour melee after Sam's death was far too messy to be enjoyable. I feel that a good brawl should be shot clearly for the viewers to enjoy the moves, the fights, and of course some bloodshed; yet when everything happens so fast that no one can see what's going on, that's not a good scene. "Transformers" suffered the same at the ending part where every robot just got together in a wrestling match and kicked the shit out of each other... Can't see anything sad.gif

Maybe I'm getting too old for fast packed action fights... The sudden, loud sound effects which tried to frighten viewers failed too. It's used far too often in horror movies nowadays, to the extent that it simply fails to excite anymore. A temporary stun maybe, due to the high decibels, but none of the fear factor.

Another thing that I disliked was the shaky camera views whenever there's some action. The shooting angle was shuffling too fast from one side to another while shaking as if an earthquake was happening at the same time. It just made my head spin more and there were times I'd just shut my eyes instead of watching at the shaky images. I'm sure it's intentional to showcase the feeling of urgency in the movie, but again it adds to the blurriness of the action parts where I just could not concentrate enough to appreciate it.

If anyone remembers, "I Am Sam" (superb movie) had the same shaky, fast shifting camera views despite NOT being an action flick. I had headaches watching that too sweat.gif

Finally, the pacing. BAD. Seriously BAD. I almost fell asleep in the first one hour of the show. It's important to highlight Robert's lonesome in the dead city, but one WHOLE hour of man-dog interaction is utterly boring. Why not show more flashbacks of the period when the KV spread around Manhattan? Showing how people dropped dead one by one, or transforming into zombies would be a much better explanation (and visual stimulation too) compared to a one paragraph verbal outbust in the ending part, where Robert shouted NO GOD! to Anna.

I got really bored until Anna appeared... I was like WOW... chun chick finally. tongue.gif The point is, now at least we'll have some character interaction. Not romance of course, I'll cringe if they kissed or make out (damn they've only just met and are fighting to survive). Too bad, as mentioned above, Anna and Ethan got too little time to be significant.

The ending was very rushed, but kinda expected for a story like this. There's no way to end it except the way it did, and I'm particularly bothered about it. Just the pacing... just that.

Conclusion? Hm.... I can't say I liked this movie, yet at the same time it wasn't that bad after all. I've wasted money on more disappointing movies before. All I can say is, my expectations were too high, hence the disappointment. There's so many aspects which can be improved on, but thankfully it didn't turn out to be a mindless kill-all-zombies flick.

GhazzerRate: 3/5... So so... Will Smith's acting saved it from the movie zombies whistling.gif

Wow nice summary there man..Agreed with u on some part of the movie..Tis movie is quite nice act cuz its a movie with a variety of genre mixed up together and making it somethin fresh and new..

The pace of the movie is quite decent to be frank..Maybe ive watched much slower movie but this one really moved in a v subtle and nice flow..IMHO ofcuz.. tongue.gif Every scene connects with each other so beautifully and its not as messy as other movies(i.e GC shakehead.gif )

I think it all comes back to one's expectation of the movie..Luckily i din really put too much expectation on the movie..(read this thread b4 hand.) biggrin.gif But still its better for those interested to watch it to rate the movie by themselves..

For a movie that tries to instill realism, the vampires look like they were ripped out from the Resident Evil 4 cutscenes. Secondly, I didn't like why Neville was legend. He was supposed to be legend for the same reason vamps are regarded legends by people and not saving humanity again. Thirdly, I took offense with the ending. Remember Independence Day when the fighter pilot when kamikaze? Will Smith took a page from that again rolleyes.gif

As I mentioned, I don't see why Smith couldn't enter the panic hole/room. I mean, surely he could throw the grenade then enter the hole and lock it? Don't tell me, you need someone to close it as if so, who opened the hole for the lady/kid? Ending seemed forced upon to make Neville die. Applaud the intelligence but thumbs down on the CG for vampires and the way he died (seemed a stupid way for him to die).

And for a FIVE million scene at the bridge, it surely seem like it didn't create that much carnage tongue.gif Anyway, decent movie. 3/5 as well. And for the record, I ain't saying I'd watch RE or 28 Days/Weeks Later, it's just I had a couple of problems with the movie.

Well, as a lot of people mentioned before, Robert was considered a legend because he was the one that found a cure, and the remainders of mankind owe their lives to him. I'd say that the events that happened after Anna reached the sanctuary place was that the authorities gained a method to cure the zombies and used it to reverse the effects of the KV hence saving all humanity.

That's why Anna claimed that humans (those who survived and got cured) are the legacy of Robert Neville, and he is considered as their "legend" or "saviour".

As for the ending... well, that's heroic effect for you. A hero's death brings a stronger emotion than him surviving the ordeal. It also glorifies the sacrifice he made in order to save mankind. Stupid, you might say, but Hollywood emphasises more on glory than reality.

If a reason is to be made, we could say that :
1. Robert was already on the verge of insanity, hence he did not value his life anymore.
2. He wanted revenge so badly due to the deaths of his family and Samantha to the extent that his rage clouded his rational judgement.
3. He did not believe in the so-called sanctuary in Vermont despite Anna's insistence, hence he did not even think that he'll survive to reach there. He probably wouldn't want to go there as well since he didn't believe in God and he refused to leave Ground Zero.

Meh... don't think too much into it. The hero just had to die. He must.

Despite our own conclusions as to why Neville went harakiri, I think the one reason showed by the director was that Neville wanted the lady/kid to survive and not end up like his wife and kid and not insanity or anything. He did it to preserve their lives. Since his objective was so, a person who could create the cure sure is dumb enough not to realize that he could have survived tongue.gif

And as for the zombies, okay not RE4 but you get what I mean. The CG for the vamps just weren't impressive.

overall this is not an action movie, it potrays more on the mentality of the man in isolation - Neville, the despair, the anguish, and seemingly hopeless situation. but he could still go on... which is admirable.

For me, I Am Legend = Cast Away's loneliness and isolation + 28 Days Later's Am I the last man on earth? + Resident Evil's zombies

Still a good movie thou... but it's a little bit too short for me and the ending is kinda anti-climatic. But if it's too long then we'll see lots of people falling asleep in cinema, since I already saw a few fall asleep at a 12noon show.

It's hard not to compare it with Cast Away, since both share the similarity of isolation and loneliness. Well, both has their imaginary friends like Fred the mannequin and Wilson the volleyball. But in terms of acting, Will Smith did it pretty well, but still not good enough, still miles away from Hanks acting in Cast Away. wink.gif

I still like Sam the dog the best thumbup.gif

Btw, do you notice Neville put the lady mannequin (the one he's interested at) browsing at the Adult section? brows.gif

One thing I'm not happy about it's the CGI of the zombies (which suppose to be vampires like anyway), seems like the production have spend too much money on clearing the NY streets, and spend less on the CGI and the effects of the explosions. Sorry to say those "zombie" CGIs are just like a ripped off from the resident evil game. They are just too fake and not realistic enought! sad.gif I'll be more convince if they could just use real human actor for the "zombies" instead of being lazy and use only CGIs. doh.gif

Also I wish they could skip the part where

Even if he stayed inside the hatch, the Darkseekers will definately come looking for them if he is still alive. That is the reason why he sacrificed himself. They want him.
*
besides this reason, i think he no longer has the will to live. his wife dead, daughter dead. life companion, 'you know who', also dead. what's the point of living?! he has already lost faith in life, he just want Anna who has a son to try and live if there is a possible 'sanctuary'.

Why did he need to sacrifice himself at the end? He's found the cure and there's enough room in the emergency hatch. Why not hide in the hatch, throw the grenade as the glass is about to break, close it and come out the next day?

the room is underground... even if its day .... the room should be still dark wont it?

I went through the audiobook version of the original book before watching the movie -> BIG mistake!

Ended up all I could think of when watching the movie was how different and weak (storywise) the movie was compared to the book version, they only have like 1% in common!

I whole heartedly recommend you go check out original book (or audiobook version, the narrator was good) AFTER you watched the movie because you don't have to worry that it'll spoil the story for you since you'd notice they are practically two different stories anyway.

In the end, I still have to be biased and say that the book version definitely rules!

By that logic, Anna and child would not have survived the next day if they exited the hatch since darkseekers are still around, which clearly wasn't the case.

While the "lost his will to live" reason kind of works, why he chose to sacrifice himself still doesn't quite click for me.
I guess that's the typical Hollywood Tragic hero scenario.

I thought so too that there will be discussion on his choice to sacrifice his life in the end of the movie. While all of us are thinking hard and deep as to what made him to choose such path, perhaps we should look back on how determined he is in finding the cure and not letting the infection to take supremacy.

When the first flash back to the past was shown, his wife was persuading him to join his family and work out the cure from a safer distance and secured ground but his response was "This is ground zero. This is my site. I'm not letting this to happen". Clearly this shows that he chose not to leave because he had set the objective to find the cure to restore human population as the paramount priority and only to be followed by the second priority of returning to his family at the aunt Sarah's place and lastly, both these decisions were made before his wife and kid were killed in the helicopter accident. There is no reason for him to travel to the aunt's place since his wife and kid are gone and therefore, his second priority is no longer valid, which leaves him with only one primary purpose and that is to find the cure for the human race.

His purpose to live on is fulfilled when he found the cure and there is no more reason for him to continue his life.

Other reasons that pushes him to the edge of sacrificing himself is his state of mentality and emotional instability. I'm sure you guys know how strongly he believe that there is no survival colony. Remember the scene where he comes up with all the statistic of the world head count of 6 billion hit by the KV that extermintate 90% of the human population and with the remaining of them turning into darkseekers and leaving a 1% of population who are not affected by the KV and bla bla bla... [I can't remember anymore la]. I doubt he will change his mind about the survival colony since he had been trying to find life for 3 years but never seems to found any.

This is my point of view and what I believe personally of how he came to the decision of sacrificing himself. I find that other reasons posted such as his family is all gone and there is no will to live on is valid too and seriously, I think its just way difficult when all of your love ones are no longer around and with his state of mind and emotional instability, I think its just going to be "mission impossible" for him to start life all over again lo.

On another note, one of the scene in the movie that really got to me was when he walked up to the mannequin in the DVD shop to say hello. sedih gila wei. Also it was just right to cast Will Smith in as he can make something as simple as a relationship with Sam(his dog) to be so powerful. Respect!

If you like end of the world type of movie but without the monsters, try watching "The Stand" by Stephen King. It's a 6 hour TV mini-series.

Well, at least to me, it's the best of the 3 adaptation. The other 2 I wasn't even tempted to watch. But truly, I watched this vampire movie due to Will Smith. Love that guy. Most of the quetions here are answered in Matheson's book.

It's not bad but don't put too much hope in it. It has an anti-climax ending, but one of the best effort by Will Smith. Oh, and remember, it's VAMPIRES...not zombies. i hope you did not read the book though. It is very different. The studio tried to "contemporarized" it.

The book version...had Neville became the "monster", of which, is not generally acceptable by the majority, that will include children and teenagers. They can't appreciate they thought processes behind the whole plot (of the original book)... I think this movie is like The Lost World. Lost in adaptation but still a Box Office success.

he did...didn't he? There are a lot of reasons why he can't turn it on 24h. First off, the whole idea is to hide from the darkseekers...not make more attention for them to find him. Secondly, if its used & 1 breaks or spoils...its over...they'll overrun his house for sure. Lastly...those lights can't cover everywhere. Darkseekers could just use something to throw at the lamp and overrun his house after that.

QUOTE(clayclws @ Dec 23 2007, 02:51 AM)

well, the monsters in the original classic were vampires...but in this show its not confirmed. They surely don't have the vampire teeth. You can assume its a vampire coz it can infect with a bite...but I think its the same for all kinds of virus.

The book says it is similar to vampirism...and Matheson was inspired by Dracula - King of Vampires.

Quite a good movie for the year,

It is very different from the Book, weird Hollywood, but the movies still rocks, quite slow pace, have some suspense, not car chase, but got some bang-bang-boom

top notch performance from Smith smile.gif , quite a good director, although , I expecting part 2.

nah. its so that in the end they can narrate how will smith is the legend and anna with the kid are his legacy. will smith death gives more ohm to the word "legend". not a typical good ending heroes movie but if he is still alive, i guess it would not be filled with emotion and the crowds would leave the theater and forget about the movie existence in like one night?

Overall great zombie movie .... much better than 28 days/weeks later and others in the past year or so.

But this still has an unsatisfying ending.... feels rushed.

And what the hell is Will doing with so little weapons?!!! Only a machine gun and a pistol? Tat's all?

i've always wondered...
the rats were given the antidote, and one of them became normal.
Robert used the same antidote on his dog,and (IINM) on the woman.
i he had caged the dog,and waited a few hours/days,could the dog have been turned back to normal? hmm.gif

Yea, its good...but its hard for me to think of a really good reason to watch it again several times. None are too memorable....but overall its all a good movie.

P/S: The dog didn't really die. Neville the one who actually killed it. wink.gif

there's a high possibility that the dog can turn back to normal, but i think he dont want his dog to turn into one of them. imagine if he cant save his dog but kill her for the 'second' time. sad.gif

the darkseekers have better strength i think, their respiration rate is higher than normal person as the heart rate is 200+ for the darkseeker... so i dun think will is able to fight them and dun forget that he is injured...

Those darkseeker are physically strong, faster speed than normal human. And also aggressive! But they cannot see the light, just like vampire.

What the hell are you doing out here Fred?!!

Yeah so I just watched it. I didn't really have any high expectations for it since even the trailer didn't hyped me up.
But after watching the whole thing I have to say its one of the better movies I've watched. Will Smith portrayed the last man on earth really well and you can feel for him. The ending was also acceptable. Wouldn't want it any other way. The only problem is those dark seekers. They were just too funny looking. Especially the one that looks like the leader. He grins too much until you just don't feel any sense of panic. Instead you feel like laughing. I was like.."wtf?" when he kept head butting.
The dogs were scary though.

U guys should realize one thing during the movie, there is a movie blooper. During the time when Will Smith wash his dog in the bathtub, how come the water is still running and still CLEAN? especially after the water treatment facility has been abandoned for 3 years lol. When I saw that during the movie I was like HUH? still got water? who takes care of it?

the story is mainly at the peak in the very ending. the script writer should cut out the crappy middle stuff and put a longer ending explaining how will smith fight for his life till the very end. overall, its quiet okay

all in all, its a nice movie (i do like tom hanks' Castaway and the idea of how isolation/being alone affects human psychology)...in this film, the "last man on earth" feel is there...for me, the only set back is the darkseeker characters...its too computer generated...they should do it like 28 days later (i mean the zombies are fast and rage fueled)...nice touch on the scene where will smith has to kill "sam the dog"...and no complaint on the ending...

i think that's one of the mutation caused by the virus once people got infected...muscle tissues expanded and they became stronger (and can jump higher)...other than sensitivity to uv ray, extreme aggression, lost of human senses, hunger for fresh blood/meat, etc...

You guys need to understand why he called "LEGEND"

It is not because he didnt get infected by the virus or being the last man on earth, but he found the cure for the virus...thats why "HE IS LEGEND" in the stories.

i dont think it's a blooper. i believe the the huge tank behind him (u can see it in the "washing the dog" scene) is a water purifier. city water supply is designed to be self replenishing, does not need much maintenance and more importantly, does not depend on electricity to work.

watched this movie today.
it's kinda interesting movie. what i like most from this movie is the fact that will smith is basically alone and after 3 years of solitude, he is showing it (mentally) about why certain things behave like this and stuffs.

i thought him being alone is scariest... and i dont think those darkseekers need any more touch up. i think they are good enough. true, they look like some cheap CGI but this movie is unlike resident evil where we go in without our brain and enjoy the shooting scene only... this movie has more depth than that.

Movie was ok. I didnt even knew this movie was coming out and I was like "huh, what is this i am legend". Wanted to watch it at first sight but saw Will Smith as the main character and thought hurm this is probably some funny alien movie with a few cartoon jokes. I was wrong.

But the CGI was really crap. To think Smith starred in million dollar CGI movies like MIB and Independence Day, you'd think they would at least splash a few more millions to make up those creatures. Or why didnt they just used live models it would look more scarier. That was the point of the movie right? to make it look scary. Because there was no sense of humour at all. I dont know what the directors were thinking. btw for a forty year old Will SMith has an incredible body lol. Bottom line, its an ok movie but its not the type of movie that will will be remembered as a classic. Plus, I wish they would have picked some unknown guy to play the movie even tho Smith did a 5 star job but I couldnt help but think of him making silly jokes and cheesy alien killer lines at every scene. It was like I was waiting for him to say "oh now you've done it macarone boy I'm gonna blow you off back to space!!!"

Added on January 4, 2008, 4:57 ammy bad just knew that the budget for this film was 150m! but still, why is the CGI so crappy? Looks like Cicakman's CGI lol

i believe it's will smith who spearheaded making this movie, as he's the one who chose the director, not the other way around. i believe this is the latest will smith's run to show that he's not just some crappy actor who could only do shallow characters, but a serious actor who could do some serious stuff. this started off after he did "in pursuit of happyness".

i think even if they're going to make a sequel, it won't be about will smith bcoz he's dead...maybe they'll do it like 28 days later & 28 weeks later...i mean it's a whole new storyline (maybe 10 years later) where the virus mutated and immune to the antidote...it's a new virus and deadlier...and the infected have no weaknesses...

if they gonna keep will smith in the sequel, it would be in video form. remember that he documented his entire 3 year ordeal. will smith might still be in the movie, just not as an interacting character laugh.gif

i hated this movie because this is just another movie that injects hysteria and fear into people
it demonises Biotechnology and also medical testing. i mean the first bullshit is that before human testing there was animal testing and the animal testing might last a couple of years before eve considered safe for human trials.
and testing 10005 humans on an antidote for cancer is bull crap. there are 3 stages of human testing and the first stage only allows about 5 live human subjects.

if the drug causes any problem in the first 2 years the whole thing is aborted.

and there is no virus capable to change a complex organism into something like a dark seeker. it doesnot have enough space to store enough info to cause such drastic changes

the only virus capable to cure cancer now is an STD called the CMV which targets hepatic cancer. not curing it bur slowing its growth.

u're imposing that these things are occurring now. the drug may have not caused any problem in the first 2 years or in the initial 10005 human tests. it did not mention about the duration taken from initial animal testing and the "apocalypse", but if it started now, it would actually have a full two years before the thing could happen.

there's no known virus capable to change a complex organism, but we're not talking about a normal virus, but a mutated form of rabies. rabies not only affects physical body, but also mental health, causing delirium, agitation, aggressive behaviours etc. if normal rabies can do that, imagine a mutated genetically engineered strain. there's a lot of what if here, and that's the fun part of such films.

suspension of disbelief, my friend. if we only show things that can only happen, we will be stuck with documentaries.

got documented cases where CMV actually shrunk liver cancers.

neways for a drug to reach clinical trials that is for actual humans there is a minimum period of 6 yrs. and safe for distribution a minimum of 10 yrs.

neways the I Am LEGEND virus is a little far fetched and i know it because i have been dealing with these idiots since Day 1.

Save the trees deforestation is killing the planet
FACT: deforestation results in growing of new trees and also reduction in illegal logging.
Protest againts dihydro monoxide.
a group of 500 green peace idiots are asked to sign a petition to ban Dihydrogen monoxide. and 500 signed.
so you gonna ban Water~?
and the reason why the forest are dissappearing is because of poor people cutting down forest to plant crops for their families which would not be needed if they would have just accepted the GM crops.

not too sure where you got that first quote.

but the second quote (which he screams out) is said when those zombies were head bumping the pyrex and will smith was tryin to convince them to stop because he can cure all of them.

Haha.. Cloverfield monster WTF man... sweat.gif

I'm not sure whether I like this new ending more than the old one. Yes, I did mention about my dissatisfaction about the original ending due to its abruptness, yet this alternative one didn't seem to add much into the show.

Most importantly, it was even more subtle regarding the possibility of a cure. In the original one, at least we know that Robert succeeded in his quest thanks to the final comments, but this one wasn't as clear cut as it should be.

What happens if the female zombie manage to be cured while she was with the zombie gang? Will they eat her then? tongue.gif Will she freak out when she hears those annoying AAAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH?

er.. i dont get the alternative ending, what was the syringe that Robert injected into her, i thought the previous ending shows that the female was cured already? and they managed to create a serum from her? hence 'the legend'...

remember when he first captured that female subject and attempted a cure? The cure didn't work and she almost died. He injected that serum...probably to negate the cure to keep the subject alive. Get the dvd and watch again if you forget.

Either way, this ending isn't that good. The female subject left and the cure went away with her. He didn't get the cure from her in the clip... sweat.gif

this ending made more sense to me. as i was watching the movie i already thought it would end like this, instead will smith blew himself up.
i went "lol wtf o_O?!"

also it showed that the infected arent just mindless evil monsters, they have feelings and are smart too. just like the book if im not mistaken.
