From a consumer perspective, this is actually a very big win.

Big loss for the economy.

They're cheaper because they wont pay any taxes here, and won't pay any taxes on China either. This becomes black money.

Also since they're only on the tourist visa they won't spend much here either, even compared to those other illegal bangladeshis/indonesians/pakistanis that do contractor work which live here.

It's also temporary. Market is tough in China, they are willing to take a cut from what they normally charge for survival. Once times are better they will go back to status quo

And what then of our local market? Wiped out by them?

I knew there were a large group of renovation contractor from Vietnam.

They can beat local contractor by 30%~50% lower in quotation.

It's not a news anymore.

I don't deny some workers never put in effort to improve their skills.
Wet cement - forever only knew how to do brick & plaster.
Tiler - forever just want to do tiling.

I came across a group of vietnamese who could sapu electrical, water piping, cement, tiling, iron works, all by themselves.
*
Yeah I happen to stumble upon their YouTube channels
Their plumbing and electrical are combined into ones, their works also looks perfectly clean almost OCD level

Pros and cons for consumers

Cons are as per what you say, and also local companies lose biz

Pros are consumers get cheaper service and might spur local companies to offer better services

Fact is even without those from China, a lot of people today are turning to Indonesians to do such work too and even if you engage local companies, the ones who actually do the work are Bangla or Indon

Renovation works are really dependent on the scale. If its condo renovation (the pic from the article looks like condo), you normally can't do much and if you buy higher end condos. you don't even need to do tiling anymore

So, 20 days to just install lights and cabinets is actually reasonable and if local companies quote 2 months, then can you blame consumers to turn to China contractors?

As for quality, local biz also not assured of quality too. So, if both also not assured of quality, most consumers would go for cheaper and faster service

won't wipe out, in the end if they wanna do business, have to register SSM, hire local staff and apply worker permit, then that time baru is level playing field. Worker permit cost the most, easily RM10k+ per year.

The way they do illegally is just ad hoc job.
