The old thread is here
Gerbils Hut V5, I wont bite you, I wont stink either!

General Information of Mongolian Gerbils:

The Mongolian Gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus) is widely kept as pets. They come in a variety of colours, which makes them stand out from their close cousin, the common brown rat. Gerbils are very friendly, sociable, intelligent, entertaining, lively, and curious animals. They rarely bite and are almost odourless. Mongolian gerbils make excellent pets for they are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day, taking short naps and snoozes in between play.

One important fact to know,
You CANNOT pull their tails or it will come off. No, gerbils are not lizards, they come off coz their tails have very sensitive nerves and skin, pulling hard can detached the bone and tear the skin, resulting in the lost of a tail.

Gerbils in captivity make great beginner pets. They rarely bite at all, have little to no odour and are economical to keep in the long run. Once a while, gerbils can get curious so they do tend to nip and test their surroundings. Nipping is normally not painful, only bites are painful and sometimes bloody but there is no need to be scared of gerbils for they rarely bite.

Single or a Pair?
By nature, gerbils are social creatures, meaning the should never be kept as single animals. Gerbils that live alone have nothing to do, no aim in life and they will just go on eating and sleeping, becoming overweight and depressed, and will be destructive by chewing on everything they find, dig at the tank's corners the whole day without stop, show nervousness and other unhealthy activities. This is why WE RECOMMEND to get gerbils in pairs. Gerbils are colony animals. They need to feel safe and secure in a family. It is delightful to see gerbils in a pair or a small clan. They will groom each other, play wrestling, sleep together and eat together. When in a bigger group say more than 2 gerbils, they will set their own Hierarchy, having a dominant gerbil doing most of the activities first, then followed by the rest. The dominant gerbil will then put everyone in place and make sure that every gerbil knows his or her place in the clan.

How to keep gerbils?
There are many caresheets available on the Internet for research, so do read up as this is just a basic guide.

Gerbils do not do well in cages; therefore the best housing for gerbils is an aquarium or tank. The housing needs are quite different from hamsters and other rodent pets.

Important stuff to have before getting a gerbil:

1.5ft Aquarium with lid- you can get plastic or glass, plastic is easier to clean. The bigger, the better. (rm30 to rm40 for plastic) DO NOT CAGE THEM! Examples:

Hamster staple food- A good basic staple would be Habitrail Staple, but the best in the market that gives very good results would be Prestige and Harry Hamster. Only these 2 brands will give the best nutrition and variety to a gerbil's diet.

Treats- Wooden chews, peanuts, dog biscuits and dried stale bread are great treats.

Water bottle- They need a bottle but if you don't want them to tear the bottle up, searh the internet for tips on making a bottle guard or cage. Gerbils do not need much water if you feed them fruits and vege often but it is still very important to attach a bottle with fresh water for the gerbils.

Vege and fruits- Important to have in their diet. Give mustard greens(Sawi/Choy Sum), apple, carrots, pear, french beans, lettuce. PUMPKIN makes an excellent treat!!! It deworms the intestines as well.

Toys- Gerbils love wooden stuff to chew, cardboard box to chew and glass cups and small clay flower pots to play in. Do not buy plastic toys coz they will chew them and you will waste your money. Plastic can also be dangerous when eaten.

Hide Box- Gerbils like to sleep in hide boxes. You can DIY one from an old coconut shell, buy a wooden one or plainly make one out from wooden ice cream sticks and PVA glue. Clay or glass Aroma burners work very well but make sure you buy 1 that can fit a gerbil inside.

Wood Shavings and Wood Chips- No pine or cedar, please use aspen shavings or chipsi wood shavings. Pine and Cedar will cause breathing problems and watery eyes. Wood Chips are a good substitute if you can't find proper wood shavings.

Timothy Hay- Gerbils love hay. They chew it, build nest with it and sleep in it.

Alfalfa Hay- High in protein and is still good for gerbils to nibble and chew and make their nest.

Sand Bath- When your gerbil's fur looks ruffled and dull, give them a sand bath. You can get this cleaning sand that is for hamsters, works well and will make a gerbil look all velvety and clean looking. Recommended brands are Sluis, Delikate Snowy bathing sand, Charlie Chinchilla bathing sand.

Bedding Hay/Straw- You can try Russel Hay or Sluis Comfort Hay. These hay are used to build nest... cheaper than Timothy and Alfalfa hay.... and smells nice too.

How about breeding?

Please see the link below... breeding is not easy as it will cost money and time and space. So think carefully before breeding. Also, it takes a lot of studying of the genetics to get the best colour quality from a pair. Some gerbils can only produce black and agouti pups.... so that is why the genetics have to be studied. Breeding needs a goal, to be a breeder one must never think of money but the goal of getting new colours or promoting the pet. If any information needed on breeding, PM Nezumitaro, jaswwp or me(crazymouse_yyh)

1. How to DIY a water bottle hanger

One of the popular problems faced by gerbil owners is the issue of how to provide a source of water for gerbils. Although a dish can be used, but most of the time the gerbil will bury the dish in shavings, making the bedding wet. It is important for a gerbil to have water especially if it is pregnant or nursing. Gerbils have been known to reabsorb fetuses or even eat a pup to get the water it needs if water is not provided.

There are many types of bottles available on the market. If you are able to find a bottle with those suckers or those that stick to the tank wall then it is good, however sometimes the gerbils will chew the suckers or the water bottle itself.
If you have the type of bottle that points downwards, you can hang it from the tank cover, however if you have the normal type of bottle, the kind without a small hole at the top for you to hang wire through..you might have to make a bottle holder yourself.

Example:

Water bottle with no hole at the top provided.

2. How to make a split cage

Why need a split cage? Note that gerbils have very short memories and can forget their friends in 3 days or even less. If you have to seperate your gerbils because of breeding but wish to reintroduce them at a later date, you should use a split cage so that they can still see and smell each other. New gerbils can also be introduced in this way for a few days, so that there is less chance of fighting when you finally put them together. Remember that gerbils can fight to the death, dont think that they look so loving and tame to their friends, once they see an unknown gerbil they can fight viciously and cause very serious wounds. I'm speaking from experience here.

user posted image

This is the simplest split cage you can make for a plastic tank. The sides are rubber hose split into half, the purpose is so that you can wedge the whole thing into the tank, and it wont move or slip. Remember that plastic tanks are wider at the top than at the bottom, so you have to take that into account when cutting and bending the wire mesh. Try to use metal wire mesh with small holes, with big holes the gerbils will keep on chewing at it, and hurt their noses. Make sure it is tall enough, gerbils can climb up the split and crawl through any small spaces at the top.
3. Alternative to tanks

Gerbils given birth and you want to seperate the dad from the mum? Or perhaps your gerbil has fallen sick and you want to seperate it from the other healthy ones temporarily. If you can't get a tank at short notice, you can use a storage box

user posted image

This is just to give a general idea. Note that the top should be securely fastened, else the gerbil will escape. Usually I put the storage box lid on top covering half the wire, and something heavy on top, but more pegs should do the trick as well.

Intro no need bigger room. Just need a split cage. The tank must have only bedding, water bottle & food bowl. Other things must be out. Change your bedding & wash your tank with detergent before intro-ing. Put the new one inside the split cage & inside the tank. Once you are free, you can start intro them by placing them on a place around 2ft wide such as table one by one. First will be the new fella, then the old fella which you feel is the less dominant one. Watch them carefully. If you see them sniffing each other & don't move, use a cloth to separate them. Once you feel they can get along after few minutes, put in another & repeat the steps till the last one in. If you see the new one like panic then must keep an eye on him/her. If others go sniff him/her & he/she runs away, others will chase him/her. So separate them with cloth.

small bottle design, put at the corner of tank, this one is for small tank.
user posted image

this one is i put for the habitrail cover
user posted image

this is the design for big bottle hanging on the corner of tank, a bit ugly design i think, but works for me.
see there is a like door like that in the lower part, that is to cover the lower part of the bottle from bite
coz b4 this i didnt put the cover up, then jus side cage only, end up they bite the lower part of bottles.
user posted image
user posted image >>> this design is the one that use on below picture

see the white masking tape there, is the place where my gerbs bite it, got one small hole.
so i put masking tape on it then use uhu gam to glue on the side on the masking tape.
coz i duwan put the gam on the hole direct coz sacred later the gam suck inside the bottle.
if u carefully see on top of the bottle, there still got cage protect it, that is extra one, not from the original design.
this is to prevent from biting the top of the bottle, b4 this i got put also, but then jus cover a bit, now put almost cover the whole top

Hey I have a question, can gerbils die of heart attack? Especially when old age? My siblings like to scare them by clapping and making them jump. They think it's funny.. blargh..

today I went to Superpets to see their gerbils.... err... their display gerbils kinda bad setup.

You know what bedding their use? Aquarium gravel!!!! Yes, that's right, those aquarium gravel that is like 0.5cm size.... pity, so hard and cannot dig to burrow. 2 gerbils in the display tank, with some driftwood and rocks.... kinda sad. I wonder how to absorb the pee and poo.... summore the way they clean.... bleh... I walk into the petshop, can faint.... the air is like cat litter and pee smell....

Then at the back got also a tank with agouti gerbils.... and WW, Syrians and Robos.... the Syrains are not as nice as those at Pet Shack or from Foo.... kinda thin. Their Robos look scruffy.... the WW don't look too good either.... but the price for a gerbil there is RM48!!!!

Also, beware, that petshop sure will hunt to buy gerbils from breeders.... called me and ask if I can supply or not... Dream on lah, I won't supply to petshops. I see the condition... sigh.. i won't go there anymore.

Superpets is near pet shack, sunway mentari also.... well, I think the bad thing is the ventilation lah.... coz they seal up the whole shop for air cond, with all the cats.... and i mean MANY cats, the place smells like cat litter and pee. To the staff and owner, they are used to it so won't suspect got smell but to new comer.... can pengsan lah hahahah....

The tanks for the gerbils and hamsters are spacious.... but just the display set up makes me don't like them.

*
oh, the superpets manage to find gerbils supplier adi ar..... I think they really know nothing about gerbils la, pity the gerbils.

thumping? I guess it's normal for gerbils to do that. They do it when they're excited or to alert others of danger. hahah.. so far i never see my 2 gerbils do that before though.

Recently i noticed some flees or ticks on my gerbils. Cause when i move them into the carrier tank so that i can change the bedding, i saw some small jumping bugs inside the carrier tank which is small and yellowish.

Then i decided to sun their hay.

Does sand bathing help in removing the ticks?

Or do i need some medication to remove them?

Thanks

What you can do is buy a bottle of mite spray for birds and use it on gerbils. That's the safest. You sure jumping? Fleas are brown and got long back legs and looks like a bean shape.... ticks are like tear drop shape and also brown coloured and much bigger to see.

I think it is the bedding. Sun it. That's the bedding mites, kinda common in wood shavings. It is quite harmless, it only eats up rotten food... lives in soil so if you put the bedding near an entrance that is near grass or outdoors or even flower pot with soil, then the mites may have traveled from there.

Just go petshop buy lah. None of us make coconut homes for our gerbils unless you got a tool that can drill a nice round hole.

UPDATES

I got hold of the gerbils for adoption.

How many you ask?

Hahahah.... about 30.... crazy crazy....

Anyway, they are open for adoptions.... and sorry, no colour mixing. Why? Coz got 2 colonies.... so to avoid fighting, only adoption of colony mates. They are adults so harder to pair up unless you have the patience to do split tank introduction.

There are 9 lilacs! All adults, males and females.

The other Colony consist of Blacks, Agoutis, a few Nutmegs and a few DEH, now this colony got age difference, from 2 months old to a year plus.

Anyway, will update in the adoption thread.

Dilute detol, then dip them in. Dry them with warm hair dryer loh hahaah.... I don't really bath gerbils but since the bedding was dirty, i scared got bacteria on them.... so better bath them before go to homes.

Deworm, I'm gonna ask a vet if can use puppy dewormer or not... if can't then will do what the vet do loh.

Yea, I'm kinda sure they are jumping cause when i try to put my hand near them, they jump away.

So i can spray the mite spray on the body expect the face right?

I'll try to buy it from Pet Safari this weekend when i get back biggrin.gif

Ohhh... then in could be fleas.... they jump....

Anyway, yes. Do say you want a mite spray for birds.... if you find one for rabbits also can use. Birds may take a few sprays to actually kill the mites but it is safe if eaten coz birds would preen after each spray. Yups, no direct spraying on the face area.

The hay is to let them chew on for fiber and to help wear down their teeth. Crazymouse has some gerbils for adoption, why not a adopt a few? But probably got a bit of screening. biggrin.gif

Hahaa... Not yet sleep. Yea, you can get the hay from petshop. There are different types of hay. Got alfalfa, timothy, bermuda grass and barley & oats. Most common and inexpensive ones are timothy and alfalfa.

Personally I don't recommend pine shavings. A budget choice will be delikate shavings. Though we don't really know what wood is it, it doesn't smell strongly of pine.

Delikate is the brand. Pine is toxic because of the chemical that gives it the pine smell. So if the shavings smell less of pine, means got less of these chemicals.

Wuwuwuwu.... just counted..... 31 gerbils!!!!

Anyway, got 2 DEH, I'm gonna keep 1 heheheh... so one is a baby, just about 4 weeks old. So zoejehuty, you need to wait another 2 weeks before can take lah.

I don't even know which is the mom LOL.... So I will adopt out all the males.
There is 2 nutmegs.... then the rest all agouti and blacks.

The agoutis are really good looking.... the blacks.... got this black girl kinda cute. When I pick her up, she will put her 2 paws in her mouth... I dunno why. I'll get a pic once I get my camera. Funny but cute. She is not deform or anything, just would put her 2 paws in her mouth.

Both tanks not 2ft tank loh.... 1 is 1.5ft y 1.5ft and another is 1ft by 1ft.... so.... LOL.... population boom. Anyway, I have shifted them into 2ft tanks.... now at least got some space for them to go around but still, I would like them to go to new homes ASAP so they can enjoy better lives.

No... they do not fight because.... all siblings.

Ah, this is uncontrolled breeding loh.... you know what we always say, get single sex pair... if breed, do breed with care and also responsibility and get ready 3 tanks....

DEH baby boy.... so is ok for you.

Hun, good luck with the adoptions. Just now I was playing with my gerbil Anya. checking to see all her nails still there or not. She's a bit gila one, can jump to the top of the tank and hang on the roof. Las time she rip out 2 nails doing her crazy stunts. Partially grown back only now. She is my tamest gerbil lo, see my hand coming into the tank she will reach out her paws and climb on, then she purrs when i stroke her. But very hyper la, after a while will be running all over me, like a glider, haha.

Some pics of Anya. Trapeze gerbil...can join circus liao

yes la she is the one that cause a lot of trouble. Cannot give her toys that are too tall, she will use them to reach the roof and chew on it. She already destroyed one of my tank lids last time. Last week also climb out and jump into other gerbils cage and fight with them. Luckily I saw it before anything serious happen.

Maybe you can use wires.... or worst come to worst, melt the metal and mesh together if that can be done.

yup ... he did ... but i can see its because he was nervous ... i washed the tank then put in new bedding then put the new boy in a cage with the rest outside the cage ... that ok? so far i dont see any aggresive behaviour from others lor ...

am thinking let them be like that for few days then only take him out for 'true' intro

me took about nearly two month to intro the new gerbil to my previous two girl..
i began the intro with putting the saperated cage in the tank..and it is before puasa month..
then i only can release the new gerbil from that cage in end-middle of raya month..huhu

Yea.. Intro needs to be done in slow pace. Cannot rush else you'll regret. After the intro even it is success, please do put him back in the new cage like what you did in the first place. Then wait for another intro. It might takes month to intro him to new clan depends on your boys behavior.

Just wanted to share with you guys, did you all know that the villain in Lilo & Stitch namely "Hamsterviel" is actually a gerbil?

Haha, although in the movie/series he does not agree to that and always say that he is "hamster-like", he is still a gerbil and his character was created and based on a gerbil wink.gif

Haha, when creating a cartoon character based on a real life animal, they will normally alter or change certain parts. In the end they will have the resemblance, but the whole movement and character is totally like the real life animal smile.gif

See Stitch is based on a sugar glider, all movements and such, big eyes, ears, but he has really short tail compared to the real life one wink.gif

I notice my DEH nose bleed last night, then i change bedding.

Is this caused by bedding only? Cause i notice the bedding is abit dusty. I didnt put anything else into their tank except for bedding and ceramic toys.

Hope that it will stop bleeding when i check him after i finish my work.

And one more question, do they get infected by flu? Cause I've been sick for the past few days.

Eyes, ears, fingers, movement on four feet on the ground or up a wall, even barking are all sugar glider like wink.gif

if only stain then its like more or less... if their nose is more sensetive will be like that.. but not bleed until bedding also got or the blood is more that stain.

Once awhile for sure some slight bloodstains can be found on the nose.... all woodshavings are dusty and softwood sure produce some phenols.... but of course what we are using is much better than some other brands outside.... I use before Pestige wood shavings. Prestige line of small animal food is good quality but their wood shavings sucks, really dusty till your eyes tear and you sneeze non-stop.

The best way is to air out the bedding. Before you put the gerbils in their new bedding, just toss and turn the bedding outdoors till minimal dust forms....

Bedding allergies can be looked out... signs and symptoms are watery eyes that can barely open, very wet nose and paws, pinkish stains on the nose and paws and even blood stains. Lethargic and small appetite.

Just check on my boys, no more nose bleeding or blood stains but i noticed some dried mucus on the DEH's nose. Is that flu?

I read flu can be quite dangerous.... Do i need to get any antibiotics?

Clean the dried mucus with a wet tissue. Normally flu, you will see them rub their nose often, always having a wet face and tend to sleep more.... just hike up their vitamin C intake by giving them some kiwi fruit or apple.

taking from:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stitch_%28Lilo_%26_Stitch%29

appearance

Stitch is a mixture of several miniature animals. He uses a mixture of rabbit, chimpanzee, dog, cat, tasmanian devil, and koala, for the appearance of Stitch. He also seems to have blue fur, big black eyes, huge ears, sharp claws, two antennae, three spines from his back and can change to have 4 arms to 2 arms. He stands 3 feet 6 inches tall.

history

....626 is then sentenced by the Grand Councilwoman to life in exile on a desert asteroid and Captain Gantu escorts him. Stitch escapes and crash-lands in Kaua'i, Hawaii. Disguising himself as a dog (although he actually looks like a koala), 626 was adopted by a little girl named Lilo, who names him "Stitch".

But the creators didn't realize this.... their animal mixture could have been lessen if they had known what is a sugar glider LOL..... it resembles so much but the nose and the ears and tail.

rabbit - his ears and tail
chimpanzee - his ability to climb
dog - well, his behaviour on Earth with Lilo and also his disguise
cat - afraid of water and maybe something else which I can't see hahaha.
tasmanian devil - his attitude and anger
koala - his face and round shape.

But glider also similar a bit.... the eyes, behaviour, claws, ability to climb, vocal noises a bit similar....

Just grab and hold lo. After a while they get used to you. Some of mine even purr when I stroke them. Takes time though, some of themonly get tame after months.

RIP to Buta.....

The trick to holding a gerbils is to use 2 hand biggrin.gif

I learn it through the hard way.... Make sure your hand doesn't have any soap or shampoo smell..... Or else you will get nip or bitten.

Yesterday kena nip so hard..... Will upload some pictures tonight
Finally gotten hold of a camera tongue.gif

Hehe.. Havent been here in a while. Busy with my life...

Anyway, one of my boys (Sam) starts having this tiny red thingy sprouting on his balls. It started small, and now its getting bigger. He doesnt seem to be hurt by it, but I dont like it. Is it a possible tumor?

Too bad I cant show pictures for the time being, since I'm at work and will go to Port Dickson on a business trip for a few days directly after this sad.gif.

I hope its nothing dangerous, since Sam is one of my tamest gerbils and hes my favourite sad.gif.

Hmm my oldest gerbil has a few of those red things on his balls, it grew when he developed an allergic reaction to wood shavings, now swtiched to Breeder Celect. Not affecting him in any way now though, just that its ugly. Watch for any scratching or fur loss, if got then you might have to change your bedding.

Some gerbils are dominant so they show aggression by fighting. Sometimes small fights like wrestling is ok.... but bites with bloody injuries are bad and should never be encourage. You keep a close eye on them lah.

Normally DTW got a dark tail... but due to our climate, the colour won't come out unless we keep them in an air cond room. We can only know a DTW from gene breeding, if you dunno what you are breeding.... then you won't know DTW or PEW coz they look very similar in a way.

Ohhh.... I don't have DTW so can't tell hahahah.... some gerbils are skinny ones... in a clan sure got 1 large size gerb and 1 small size gerb....

Today I tried introducing a new female DEH with my DEH breeding pair.... damn funny. Normally males are ok with new females.... but nooooo.... my male DEH attack the new girl while my older female DEH actually liked the new girl. So..... need to do split cage liao. Need to produce more DEH, I love this colour hehehehe.

Oh, that's good. Get some pics as well. At least now got a better home.

I have to cram 20 gerbils in a 2ft tank at first coz I didn't have any extra 2ft.... but after 8 adopted... now the tank is much better. More adoptions to go!

Yah, the pups are quite stable already. They are just small size. Smaller than their age loh but now quite strong and growing better. Slow growth is part of multiple inbreeding.... 1st generation of inbreeding won't show such slow growth... but 2nd generation will.

Sorry for your lost. RIP to the old girl.

I think i also have some fighting season. Dunno why, just all of the sudden fights start to turn up in this 1 particular tank.... 2 nutmegs and 1 sp Black died from the fights without me knowing. They did a gruesome fight while I was asleep at night. Just overnight I find 3 bodies badly wounded. Pity..... declanning.... sigh, we can never tell when it might happen.

Ah..... I tell you why.... coz it happened to before to me too. It is when the bedding becomes damp. It can be from a leaking water bottle, it makes the bedding wet.... then the pee and poo also become wet, and small flies are attracted to the smell, coz it smells of rotten wood.

You do not need to be so worried about it. The maggots will not harm your gerbils and they are from the fruit fly species, not those big dirty flies.... so you just wash the tank normally, it would be alright. No need to buy anti-bacteria spray... those contain aerosol, which can actually harm your gerbils' breathing.

Main difference is gerbils are better at climbing, chewing, destroying anything chewable. They pee less than hamsters but dig more.

They don't bite but they do nip if your hand smells funny (shampoo, soap or food).

Make sure to rub your hands with their bedding to get their own smell biggrin.gif

At least it works for me.....

Oh yeah.... one more question, what happens if my gerbils are picky of food?

They tend to finish all the kuaci and left all other food untouched

Or do i just leave all the food until they finished it all?

generally, gerbils do not bite..
only in certain situation.. as yuying said..

for me, i just give them three scops of food for them in one time..
and i feed them twice a day.. one in morning, and another in the night..
although they are picky of food (of course they attend to eat kuaci first), but before i give another meal in the night all of food in their bowl were finished..

just give them an enough-enough food to eat.. tak la membezir.. smile.gif

Well it depends la. After all syrian hamsters are solitary, so keeping 1 is easier than maintaining a gerbil clan. Then hamsters do not chew and destroy the water bottles as much as gerbils. Cost is about the same unless you go and buy those expensive cage for hamsters, then gerbil is cheaper because they just need a plastic tank. However cleaning wise gerbil is easier because they dont pee so much as hamsters and stink less.

Anything with a mouth would bite if they feel uncomfortable or threaten lah....

kuro-oni
Do you not control breeding? Do you breed according to colour or you simply breed coz you have 1 male and 1 female? A female gerbil should never have more than 3 litters in a year.... terrible health later.

Hahah... thanks for the explanation Kembara...

The 3 litters a year, that is also a rule for hamsters as well. For my females.... after 3 litters, they retire but some only 2 litters then retire.... that's how we must breed lah... breed with responsibility and also ethical.... never just put 1 male and 1 female together and expect them to know when to stop coz animals never know, they breed on instinct for survival.

consecutive litter ar? if it is then seperate the male after the 2nd batch is born, else the mum may get pregnant again a 3rd time immediately, bad for health lo.

its not suit for gerbils..
they able to chew and destroy it easily..
plus the size is quite small for gerbils..

better keep gerbils in tank..
kindly refer to this page..

The OVO is too small.... and it will get destroyed by gerbils in less than a week. If the OVO is used to house a hamster without the connections of the other accessories, then it is too small....

Gerbils strive better in plastic aquariums or glass aquariums with lids...

Tomorrow have to go to vet. One of my gerbils has overgrown teeth and another is bleeding at the private parts. I think she chipped off part of her upper teeth thats y the lower teeth grew really long until the top. No wonder losing weight lately. I only feed them soft foods like oats, vege n bread every other day, most of the time its the hard hamster food. I guess she hasnt been eating well.

The other gerbil, I hope she doesnt have cancer or anything. Almost 2 years old after all. Hope the vet has some idea.

hey!, some storage box is almost as clear as aquarium. Just need to burn many holes at the top & some at the side (top part only). Ideal for keeping gerbils.

I also heard from someone(maybe from you Hun wink.gif, but I could be wrong), that singapore got gerbils because someone just breeds and breeds.

Singapore do have gerbils, more than Malaysia.... but I heard many hobbyist breeders are going slow or quitting.... the gerbil market is not so good because... well, you guess it lah, over breeding and price unstable, then of course hamsters are way more popular there. I did see alot of hamsters in the petshops..... and I really want a white faced robo now hahaahh....

My gerbils pee a lot these few days, maybe its because of the weather, its been sunny for a few day.

Does hay help reduce their pee smell?

Cause i stop putting hay for them when i discovered one of my gerbil (DEH) nose bleed when i put it in.

you might put some fresh carrot or sengkuang as a food and water supply for them..
as usual i do when i intro my gerbils..
who ever stays in the split cage, i'll supply them carrot or sengkuang..

The bottle for 10 minutes twice a day is ok. Gerbils are still desert animals, they can tolerate long hours without water. But do provide some leafy veggies too.

Aiyoh, sorry to hear that.

Sometimes small animals can die for no reason.... It could be heart attack, stroke, some internal organ failed..... at least Bengy had a good home. RIP to him.

yes most of us use delikate. erm.. no drill? use hot nail/screwdriver. Heat the nail or screwdriver over the stove until it's hot enough and burn a hole.

Pets family you mean at taman megah? The other day ( a week ago) I just saw the delikate snowy sand bath there. You can use that. Pet safari can get almost anything.. however imo, the price there a bit high. Hahah.. since I stay near the pets family i buy most of my stuff from there. Get membership card can get more dc.

Pet Safari have most of the things you need.

I've been using Delikate bedding to, but was thinking to change to corn corb since i noticed the bedding is very very dusty. Even i can't stand the dust and keep sneezing everytime i change their bedding.

Oh yea....

Yesterday gave them some meal worms...... They are so happy eating it..... Cause after they ate, they jump here jump there lol.... rclxm9.gif

i just realised... after putting 2 inches of bedding.. the hole for my water bottle is too low and might wet the hay. or the gerbils are too tall to drink from it. HOW???????? help!

and nezu also told me that i should feed them with an aroma burner. is this an aroma burner? if no, can someone show me what an aroma burner is?

For me the aroma burner is more like a play toy than a feeder. Hahaha... but your pic is of an aroma burner but not so proper. Find a lower one without anything attached on top.

Maybe you should just burn another hole that is higher up. Its best to put them higher, after all the gerbils could awlays stand on their toys to access the water. Mine is like 5 inches above the floor level

yahoo! finally got my 2 cute boys! been playing around with them the whole day. tried to hand feed them some kuaci.. they still a bit shy.. but already started to crawl around my hand.. hope to be able to pick them up soon! after i went out for a few hours and when i came home, the whole tank was renovated! they made their own tunnels and rearranged the toys! they're still happily digging now.

nezu, thank u so much for the both of them! and taro's a good boy too! nezu, you should go watch game plan if u have the time and check out spike, the bulldog in the show smile.gif

hehe been playing with them alot. but they still quite shy. and the food.. i don't know if they are eating or not. cause when i leave the tank and come back after a while, the food would be less, but i think they just buried them or something. is it normal for them to not really eat in a new environment?

my friend say taro's color is nicer den spike in the movie haha

hmm.. you can give them toilet paper roll as toys. i put a driftwood, aroma burner, porcelain bowls, and a coconut inside for them to hide and play around with. as for bedding, 5 inches would be nice because gerbils are diggers smile.gif alfalfa hays, the gerbils sometimes play with them and eat them. so.. i guess you can put as much as you like.

and no, you cannot use a hamster home for them because they will chew themselves out, or even injure themselves. use a 1.5ft or 2ft plastic aquarium tank instead. hope that helps.

If the hamster wheel is not plastic and safe for them, then it is ok to put it in.

I think someone has an example pictures of the wheel posted somewhere.

You can give toilet paper rolls, mug, jar, & other non-plastic toys for them. If you can give them thick bedding then would be great since gerbils are diggers. As for alfafa, you want or don't want also up to you. But would like to let you know that alfafa can cause the light color gerbils' fur to become yellow. If you don't mind on that, then you can give them.

Yes, you can give them sand bath. They like it so much but make sure is sand bath not dust bath. If the sand is too fine can cause respiratory problem to them. As for wheel, at least 8" non-plastic wheel. If too small can injured them.

if u want to put wheel u will need to get at least 21cm wheel, gerbils have back bone, they r not like hamster. small wheel will injurt their backbone. also make sure the wheel do not have anything that poosible to clog their tail.

You can put in another tank only for sand bath or if you have container and put inside their tank. As for the color sand, I'm not sure whether it is suitable or not. But if the sand is too fine, please don't give them. It may cause respiratory problem to them.

hun, i just ensured that this fella actually is a female one..
because she is female, then i decided to give this fella to new home.. since i only have male gerbils..
*
You sure? I checked male coz I can't see it's "hole" hahaha.... Unless I made a mistake.... but I'm pretty sure male wor.....

I had 1 gerbil, that actually didn't grow it's balls till it was close to 1 year old. He looked like a female.

It's ok. Pretty normal. Some gerbils have more grease on their fur, the sand bath is not as fine as a dust bath, so the grease do not 100% come off. Dust baths are bad for their lungs.

It should be ok. Give them some sand bath to roll in and change your bedding at least once in 2 weeks. If you want to further reduce the smell you can use breeder celect.

There's a technique to take gerbils pics. I learned it from Nezu. Due to their curiousity, it's best to let them out to play around for around 20 - 30 minutes before taking their pics. If you find them start getting slow down means camera time.... laugh.gif wink.gif

Edited: NeaRDeatH, they are new to your environment. So they will take less than usual. Let them be familiar with the new environment first. Don't worry too much.

Even male will also hump the other male to show dominance. I always see my Sp Nutmeg humps the others. sweat.gif
But do check it properly.

Yea... If you want to take nice pictures, you have to take them out. You can let them play on top of the tank which i normally do. As long you're there supervising them, no problem unless yours are as notty as my boys who dare to jump from top of the tank. sweat.gif rclxub.gif

the food is still ok, they will dig and find their food even it is buries under the bedding...
if u want to u can dig and take the food out from the bedding and put back in the food plate...
or else u can put both food plate and the sand bath bowl in more higher place...
erm... can hang them or put on top of a stand or something like that...
