Recently i noticed some flees or ticks on my gerbils. Cause when i move them into the carrier tank so that i can change the bedding, i saw some small jumping bugs inside the carrier tank which is small and yellowish.

Then i decided to sun their hay.

Does sand bathing help in removing the ticks?

Or do i need some medication to remove them?

Thanks

What you can do is buy a bottle of mite spray for birds and use it on gerbils. That's the safest. You sure jumping? Fleas are brown and got long back legs and looks like a bean shape.... ticks are like tear drop shape and also brown coloured and much bigger to see.

I think it is the bedding. Sun it. That's the bedding mites, kinda common in wood shavings. It is quite harmless, it only eats up rotten food... lives in soil so if you put the bedding near an entrance that is near grass or outdoors or even flower pot with soil, then the mites may have traveled from there.
Just go petshop buy lah. None of us make coconut homes for our gerbils unless you got a tool that can drill a nice round hole.
Yea, I'm kinda sure they are jumping cause when i try to put my hand near them, they jump away.

So i can spray the mite spray on the body expect the face right?

I'll try to buy it from Pet Safari this weekend when i get back biggrin.gif

I notice my DEH nose bleed last night, then i change bedding.

Is this caused by bedding only? Cause i notice the bedding is abit dusty. I didnt put anything else into their tank except for bedding and ceramic toys.

Hope that it will stop bleeding when i check him after i finish my work.

And one more question, do they get infected by flu? Cause I've been sick for the past few days.

I heard that gerbils can get flu from humans, so try to wash hands before touching them

Thanks for the advice, but does flu cause nose bleeding?

Once awhile for sure some slight bloodstains can be found on the nose.... all woodshavings are dusty and softwood sure produce some phenols.... but of course what we are using is much better than some other brands outside.... I use before Pestige wood shavings. Prestige line of small animal food is good quality but their wood shavings sucks, really dusty till your eyes tear and you sneeze non-stop.

The best way is to air out the bedding. Before you put the gerbils in their new bedding, just toss and turn the bedding outdoors till minimal dust forms....

Bedding allergies can be looked out... signs and symptoms are watery eyes that can barely open, very wet nose and paws, pinkish stains on the nose and paws and even blood stains. Lethargic and small appetite.

Will check them once i get back.... Thanks for the information.

But both of them still quite hard to handle, very rebellious biggrin.gif

Perhaps need more time.....

Hahaha... hard to handle meh? You need to handle them more lah. Let them get used to your fingers and hands.
*
Haha.... They tend to run away when i try to grab them but the do come near if i put my hand there. Explore and nip my hand a bit biggrin.gif

Just check on my boys, no more nose bleeding or blood stains but i noticed some dried mucus on the DEH's nose. Is that flu?

I read flu can be quite dangerous.... Do i need to get any antibiotics?

RIP to Buta.....

The trick to holding a gerbils is to use 2 hand biggrin.gif

I learn it through the hard way.... Make sure your hand doesn't have any soap or shampoo smell..... Or else you will get nip or bitten.

Yesterday kena nip so hard..... Will upload some pictures tonight
Finally gotten hold of a camera tongue.gif

Can anybody answer my quiestion,...? Is Gerbil bite? Becoz I plan to rear Gerbil but I"m scared that they will bite, becoz before this I rear a hamster and they always bite even I wash my hand first to make sure that dont have food smell.
*
They don't bite but they do nip if your hand smells funny (shampoo, soap or food).

Make sure to rub your hands with their bedding to get their own smell biggrin.gif

At least it works for me.....

Oh yeah.... one more question, what happens if my gerbils are picky of food?

They tend to finish all the kuaci and left all other food untouched

Or do i just leave all the food until they finished it all?

My gerbils pee a lot these few days, maybe its because of the weather, its been sunny for a few day.

Does hay help reduce their pee smell?

Cause i stop putting hay for them when i discovered one of my gerbil (DEH) nose bleed when i put it in.

hey ppl! am new to the gerbil thread. plan to adopt 2 male gerbils from crazymouse. have been pm-ing her but maybe i can get faster replies if i post here.

is delikate bedding okay for gerbils?

and how to i make holes in my plastic tank for the water bottle, if i dont have any drilling thingy?

i went to pets family in klang and i dont think they have sand bath. can i get everything that gerbils need in pet safari, ikano?

thanks a bunch!!
*
Pet Safari have most of the things you need.

I've been using Delikate bedding to, but was thinking to change to corn corb since i noticed the bedding is very very dusty. Even i can't stand the dust and keep sneezing everytime i change their bedding.

Oh yea....

Yesterday gave them some meal worms...... They are so happy eating it..... Cause after they ate, they jump here jump there lol.... rclxm9.gif

How many time can i feed meal worms to them per week?

If the home is made of non-plastics? Oh ya, can i give it sand bath? About the toys, can put hamster's wheel?
*
If the hamster wheel is not plastic and safe for them, then it is ok to put it in.

I think someone has an example pictures of the wheel posted somewhere.

Those are some "big" gerbils....

My boys prefer Prestige, doesn't even eat Harry Hamster (bought it because Prestige out of stock). But Harry Hamster does smell "funny".

He is still eating, previously loves to eat kuaci alot.... But now he seems to eat only a few. But he eats vege powder and fresh fruits.

Will monitor him for a while and keep you updated.

I will let you know if I need those because I'm going down KL next week. smile.gif

During last weekend, after some struggling and some nipping from him, i found out that the upper tooth is gone, lower tooth is overgrown. I will bring him back to KL for tooth trimming + checkup this week.

But he dislike hard food now, currently feeding him with Vege powder, bread and some fresh fruit/vege.

Any recommended vet around KL for gerbils? I will PM Hun to ask for vet recommendation.

Thanks.
