I watch the Taking of Pelham 123 last week.

Pro: A good storyline plus cool actor (Denzel Washington, John Travolta)
Con: I don't like the ending (Hero always win)

The Last House on the Left (remake)

Decent slasher. I like its structure of having two opposite halves. But then again I'm easily satisfied when it comes to gore and violence. There is one last act of revenge in the end which feels so blatantly tacked on that it ends up bringing the movie down a notch. 3.5/5

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Awesome movie! Stop trying to look for a real story here, because there isn't really one. Instead just sit back and enjoy the details and individual moments of hilarity and absurdity... that is, if you can get the humour. The love story is actually pretty good. It's not overbearing and doesnt impose itself, but in the end when they get together it feels genuine. Plus that dolphin song is awesome as hell! 4.5/5

(Btw, I've never read the book, but judging from the movie I think the book should be even better)

Adventureland

At first I thought this was an Apatow production, but I wasnt surprised to see that it wasnt because this is so much more grounded than any of the movies from the Apatow factory. It's decidedly more mature, and the comedic elements are mere side dishes and not found in abundance (though it is reminiscent of the Apatow comedies). I think its unfair to label this a comedy when I think it is more of a drama. While the pace and characters can (rarely) be a bit... languid, I very much liked it. Ending is a bit too convenient though. 4/5

Dogma

First half was wicked fun. Had the 'Good Omens' vibe going for it. But the second half, especially the climax, is a bit of an uninspired mess. The God in person in the movie is just so ineffective, and the characters suddenly seem a whole lot less interesting during the climax. Second half is still pretty good, but a letdown after the first half. Oh well... 4/5

G.I Joe.

2hr of pure nonsense shameless over-the-top fun. one liner + some cheesy CGI + razor thin plot but its fun to watch. switch off your brain befor you enter the hall and you might enjoy.

anyway, this is a movie based on action figure... should there be any discussion about plot?

I've read it too. The story is very Gaiman, but the actual writing strikes me as more Pratchett.

I've not read any of Pratchett's work, but I've read that Gaiman tried writing his segments in Pratchett's style, and Pratchett Gaiman's style. I cant discern between the two, but the more morbid inventions are probably Gaiman. In any case its such a terrific book. I've only read it once, but its the kind of book I want to read every half year or so. Only reasons I havent been able to are time constraints and the big pile of books in my shelf I've read to read.

Anyway, my next last movies watched (lol) would most probably be The Untouchables, Gomorra, and Good Will Hunting. Trying to put off watching any movies because I have a professional actuarial exam next tuesday.

Oh, Malaysian read, just NOT The Good Omen!! (we have exception like Noob13!! smile.gif )

1) Dogma - U are right the 1st half is better then the 2nd half. Surprising how they cast Alanis Morrisette as GOD!!? smile.gif

2) I love how Gaiman and Pratchett actually capture the feel of The Omen movie, but twisted everything around. I luv the fact the an Arch Angel and a demon are drinking buddy. Also to them the grass is greener on the other side??! The vicious dog is NO longer vicious because of THE BOY'S upbringing (the old nature versus nurture argument)

3) Actually my favorite Gaiman story is issue 50 of The Sandman. PURE beauty.

4) Had always wanted to read Stardust the book. Have you had the chance to read it? Any good? (If you had read it)

5) LUV The Untouchables (still think it is one of Kevin Costner best work), not seen Gomorra, Think that Good Will Hunting is okay only.

6) Did you even get around to watch Akira Kurusawa's The Seven Samurai?

I could not agree less. HGTG was an absolute mess - a trainwreck. I didn't find it funny, I didn't find it absurd, I just found it boring.

But I'm glad someone likes Adventureland. I'm quite a Kristen Stewart fan blush.gif

1) Indeed. Alanis Morrisette was simply terrible. If they wanted God to be this innocent, sweet looking girl, then she simply didnt have the chops nor looks to pull it off.

2) The book is filled with so many wondrous characters and inventions, it's hard to think of anyone who doesn like it.

3) Sadly I've never read any of the Sandman comics.

4) Never read Stardust. I've only read American Gods, Good Omens, Neverwhere, and Anansi Boys. I liked American Gods upon finishing it, but I was left slightly underwhelmed. I think to really appreciate it one has to know the vast mythology and the american geography. The book has stuck with me though. I should read it again sometime. Anansi Boys shares a few characters with the serious American Gods, but thats where the similarities end because the tone is completely different. Thoroughly fun book. Neverwhere is just fantastic, my second favourite book after Good Omens.

5) It's been a long time since I saw The Untouchables, but I remember really liking it. I think De Palma's best is either Carlito's Way or Carrie.

6) Sadly this is one of those films I'm embarrassed to say I've not seen. I will... sooner or later. But why is Seven Samurai suddenly in the picture? lol

Btw kobe, you just didnt get Hitchhiker's Guide. tongue.gif Yes it's filled with holes... wormholes. One scene leads randomly to a very different next scene, and it doesnt need to make any sense whatsoever. That's the whole charm of the universe, like the awesome Infinite Improbability Drive.

I liked it a lot, but I would recommend getting the graphic novel version. Charles Vess' art is just as gorgeous as Gaiman's writing.

I thought it was charming in parts, but nowhere near a worthy adaptation of the book.

In parts. Transformers 2 was charming in parts. The end part that is.

Screw source material - entertaining films FTW.

PS: In case anyone didn't get me, I kid I kid.

Absolutely breathtaking. I'll rate this film in the same podium as Requiem Of A Dream. It's beautifully bleak and it's just those kind of films that makes you depressed yet finding a new meaning in life. Now i need to find the book. 4/5

Okay will lookup Stardust Charles Vess graphic novel the next time I'm in Kinokuniya. Is he (Charles Vess) still around. The last I heard he was seeking treatment for cancer...

Have you every read the stand alone 50th issue of The Sandman. If yes, what did you think?

1) smile.gif

2) Yes, it is a VERY good book. I couldn't put it down the first time I read it. I finished it in one or two sitting (reading into the wee hours of the morning)

3) U should. AT least read the 50th stand alone issue. The ending is both bitter and sweet and I will NOT elaborate more, in case you... case it out?? tongue.gif

4) I know he wrote American Gods, but never had an interest in it because of the word American (sorry if you are American!! tongue.gif), Good Omens (I've read), Neverwhere and Anansi Boys I didn't know he did those. More trips to Kinokuniya... *Sigh*

5) I kinda like his Mission Impossible too. And apparently he is talking about making The Untouchables: Capone's Rising.

6) I think it is probably in this thread where you admited that you just watched your first Kurosawa movie, and I recommended The Seven Samurai... Just following up, that's all, no biggie!! nod.gif

I have the complete Sandman collection, and yes, "Ramadan" is one of the best stories.

(Although it does read a bit odd to Malaysian eyes. Harun al-Rashid willing to batal puasa during fasting month, with wine no less? laugh.gif )

Well, that's Mr Gaiman's Point of View (POV), sort of the writer's prerogative I suppose. It's like in the 13th Warrior, when Antonio Banderas' character, Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan was offered mead after a battle, and his character decline stating that his religion does not allow him to drink substance that is fermented from fruits or vegetable. The Viking offerer started to laugh, and when asked why he laughed, he replied that mead is made from fermented honey, and as a response, Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan took the drink! Michael Crichton prerogative... I do miss Mr. Michael Crichton's work though....
